How to Expand Your Reach, Build Your Authority and Increase Your Income Using Books | with Derek Doepker

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 4, 2017

In this interview Derek Doepker and I discuss the integral role books play in expanding your reach, building your authority, and increasing your income through additional course sales plus the review from your book sales. In past episodes I've shared with you the approach many online course creators take when it comes to creating a book to supplement their online course income. However, in this interview we go beyond the basics of simply massaging transcripts of your course into a book and reveal the virtues of writing a book that stands apart from your online course.Yes, your book is 'based' on the content of your course, and yes all you have done is repurpose your existing content and presented it in a different way.The point is, the completed book is a product in its own right, it can be used in a number of marketing and income generating activities, it is an asset you can put to many uses. Most importantly, your book provides a low barrier of entry for your prospective student. You may have a course that sells for $197, $497, $997 or more. This can be a bit of an ask for many would be students. After all, they don't know you and that's a lot of money. Is your course worth it? Yes, you may offer a 30 day no questions asked money back guarantee, but once again your prospective student doesn't know you, and at this point in time these are just words and promises on a page.If however, your prospective student can access your information in the form of a book that they can get for free or purchase for less than $10, then that initial barrier is all but removed and you now have the chance to introduce yourself and your expertise to your student through the written word.Having a book opens up a whole new world of marketing opportunities. Derek highly recommends that you have an eBook and printed version of your book available. With a printed book you have something you can physically hold, show off, give away signed copies, etc.Your book can be used as gifts on webinars, promoted in free plus shipping offers, sold at live events. As you can see, having a book presents you with many marketing and promotion strategies, not forgetting an additional revenue stream.[bctt tweet="There is power in being an author, it gives you a level of authority along with the doors that open for topic experts." username="timcooperedu"]Derek says that a lot of authors still get it wrong. They look at writing a book as something to simply tick off their bucket list. They miss the big picture. If you're going to take the time to produce a book, the content must be strategic. Your book has to fit into your brand and ultimately lead back to your course. Will everyone who reads your book buy your course or attend your live event. Of course not. But how many lead generation strategies do you know that actually make you money? When done correctly, your book will play a major role in building your email list while producing revenue for you at the same time, not to mention the percentage of readers who will go on to invest in your course and other products and services. The other reason why your book should be its own entity is you may wish to produce an audio version of your book. If you had created your book based purely on your course transcripts than your audiobook would just be a copy of your course.By creating an audiobook you reach a whole new market, busy executives who only listen to books on the way to and from work, those who prefer to consume their information through audio, and not forgetting the vision imparted or individuals whose level of literacy may be a barrier to consuming the written word. The bottom line is simply this. If you don't have a book then you are leaving a lot of money on the table and missing out on many serious marketing opportunities. If you would like to see how I'm applying this strategy, take a look at my site at WellnessBusinessBreakthrough.com, here I'm building an early readers list, building a relationship with my readers before the book is even finished. I'm getting them involved in the process and also hosting weekly free group coaching calls. The book is based on the content presented in my premium course - Wellness Business Blueprint. I also perform regular Facebook Live sessions to drive prospective readers to my website. If you would like to know more about Derek and his courses, you can email him at info@ebookbestsellersecrets.comHere are two of his courses I highly recommend (yes, they are affiliate links and yes I'm a student of both of them)Audiobooks Made Easy - How to record and produce your own audiobooksKD Sales Machine - A must have course for any author who has books on Amazon. If you have a question about any aspect of online course delivery, from concept to market, please feel free to send me an email at AskTim@EcourseDomination.com. How to 10x Your Online Course Sales and Increase Student Retention Using The Experience Product Phenomenon | with Marisa Murgatroyd

Information products are dead. The road to riches depends on more than just simply creating a few videos and publishing them to an online learning system. Today's consumer is looking for more than just information. They are looking for an experience. They are seeking guidance and fulfilment. The writing is on the wall. 2015 saw the first negative growth in the online education market. US demand for information products and home study courses actually declined by 3%So why this decline in a seemingly booming market? After all, predictions were that the online course market was going to enjoy massive growth for the foreseeable future. What happened?Well, the decline could well have been driven by another shocking statistic…On average, 97% of people who buy information based products fail to complete the training and get results. The numbers speak for themselves…The majority of online courses are failing to deliver results and this is regardless of the quality of the information they contain. This, in turn, has led to a drop in prices. Also if you look at the amount of quality information that is freely available on the internet, the value of 'information' is actually $0.Universities are publishing their entire curriculums online for free, people can view hours upon hours of how-to information on YouTube and Google will present you with an answer to any question you enter into the search box.If information alone was all it took to change people's lives, we would all be living in Google-utopia, swimming in the data that over a billion websites have to share. So how are you and the transformation your courses provide going to stand out and shine above all the noise? What actually motivates people to make a change in their lives over the long term?People prefer to learn through fun and engaging experiences rather than consuming information.CLICK TO TWEETThe point is the majority of people struggle to implement information that they've watched or read.So in order to succeed as course creators, we have to design and deliver our material in ways that present our students with an enjoyable, engaging, fulfilling experience.Imagine if you could provide the same level of excitement and addiction to an outcome as the Pokémon Go app. Adults and children alike are totally absorbed by this app and happily spending a lot of money to pursue little virtual creatures around the neighbourhood.Seriously, what would you give for that level of engagement? What if you could apply the same psychology that totally captures people attention when it comes to movies and video games and apply it to your online courses? What would that mean to your course sales? What would that mean to your business? What would that mean to your lifestyle? We have to face facts. The 19th-century practice of dumping a whole heap of information in front of someone is neither practical nor ideal when it comes to long-term, transformational change.“When it comes to learning something new people don't want War and Peace, they want the cliff notes version. They want a game and a game they can win quickly.”You have to get people out of learning mode and into doing mode so that they can get results in…CLICK TO TWEETThere is another huge benefit: When you help to bring about change in someone's life, not only are they more likely to purchase from you again, they are also more willing to recommend your material to others, they will do your marketing for you!To help you understand what naturally motivates people to learn and how you can incorporate these key elements into your courses, Marisa has created the “Experience Formula”, which is ten very specific experiences that you can wrap your courses in, that work with peoples own internal motivation and commitment. So before they know it they're getting into action, they're getting results and they're gaining unstoppable momentum that allows them to get going, even when the going gets tough. So before they know it they're getting into action, they're getting results and they're gaining unstoppable momentum that allows them to get going, even when the going gets tough. One of the biggest principles that is often overlooked is having a super clear, focused mission that relates to what people want, that your whole course revolves around. One of the most powerful value levers of all product creation is goal achievement or project…CLICK TO TWEETSo you need to look at this from the outset when designing your material. What are you moving your students towards? What will they accomplish? When stating your mission there should be no doubt what the time frame is and what the student is going to achieve in that time frame.A fundamental design flaw in a lot of online courses is they are set up for this very broad, general 'how-to'.“You will get all the information you need to do ______________”But the material isn't clear, it's not structured around getting people to that result. When your mission is clear you can set up a game to include “positive experience escalation”.As your student goes through the process and has these positive experiences, they gain momentum. So instead of instantly bombarding your new student with information that does nothing other than result in overwhelm and confusion, you should look at 'chunking down' your information to set your students up for 'constant wins'.Giving people the chance to have a win right from the very beginning of their journey with you, even before they purchase your course is very important. How can you give them a win?Getting them to make a choice, check something off their to-do list, take an action that they are capable of performing, are all ways to set up these 'constant wins'. This gives the student the confidence that they have the ability to bring about the change they are seeking. The number one reason why people don't buy to begin with or don't complete a product once they buy is because they don't have confidence and belief that they can complete it.Setting your marketing and course materials up so that your students have a sense of accomplishment and success right from the start is an important factor not only for increased sales but also student retention and referrals. When you work with the psychology of winning and giving your students a sense of achievement through regular and constant positive experiences and constant wins, your students cannot help but feel good as they work through your course. Will This Approach Work In My Niche? The short answer is yes.No matter what business or industry you're in, there is one common dominator - people get caught up in endless process. So if you can break it down for them. Simplify it. Make it fun and keep them engaged through the use of the constant wins strategy then this will work no matter what you're teaching or who your audience is.Why Is Now The Time For Experience Products? We're seeing that more and more people are coming online every single year. More and more people are setting up their online stores and websites in order to tap into the ever-growing consumer demand. With around one billion websites already in existence and growing at a rate of 300 million new sites a year, it's becoming harder and harder to compete in a very noisy environment. The point is most people don't know about the 'Experience Product Phenomenon' so they are competing in a world where they are experiencing a decline in demand and falling prices but don't know why.Basically, if you try to create an information product now it's like trying to open a video store after Netflix was invented…it just doesn't work. But you have an opportunity today to get in on the ground floor of buying Netflix stock on day one.So as more and more course creators discover that the information product model just doesn't work they will come to learn about the experience product phenomenon and get onboard.Information products, in general, have a negative reputation in the industry for letting people down and experience products are the obvious alternative because -1. you are going to create products that are more relevant, and if you use the experience product model you are going to avoid creating a course that will have a hard time selling.2. you will be at the forefront of this major shift that is happeningCLICK HERE to find out more about the Experience Product Masterclass and access all the free training and resources…http://ecoursedomination.com/experienceIf you have a question about any aspect of online course delivery, from concept to market, please feel free to send me an email at AskTim@EcourseDomination.com. Discover how to build an army of affiliates ready and waiting to promote your course to their lists. One of the biggest obstacles standing between an online instructor and self-publishing courses is the fear of not being able to find enough students. This leads to course creators being forced to accept a portion of what their courses are truly worth as they conform to the Udemy model of cheap courses in return for free marketing. But is the marketing Udemy provides really free? If they are taking 50% of your organic sales I would argue the case for the negative. If you are willing to give away 50% of your course income to Udemy while allowing them to dictate how much you can charge and how often you can communicate to your students then I would encourage you to look at the affiliate model. With affiliate marketing, you build a network of marketers who will promote your course for you for a commission that you set. Don’t Let Them Dazzle or Disillusion You with the Numbers

Udemy is not the be all and end all, nor is it the centre of the online education universe. In this episode I explain why there is plenty of room in the market for sensibly priced courses. Don't assume that Udemy is the first place everyone goes when they want to purchase a course - because it's not. This may come as a surprise to a number of Udemy instructors, but there is a huge percentage of the population who have never heard of Udemy.10 million students may sound like a big number, but when you pull back and take a 30,000-foot view, it soon becomes apparent that it is just a drop in the ocean.10 million students equate to just 3% of the US population. That's not even taking the entire world into consideration. To assume that all you need to do is put your course up on Udemy and people will find it is totally misguided. Also due to its recent pricing overhaul, I no longer believe that Udemy is a viable lead generation platform. I'm going to hold off on that one until the dust settles. In the meantime, I'll concentrate my efforts where I enjoy my highest returns.Another thing that is really starting to irritate me is the constant recital of “The market dictates the price” copout.I used to believe this for a long time, but I have since come to find the statement flawed. It should go like this - “The market dictates the price when it fails to see the value in your product”.I'm not saying this to be rude or to be insulting. I have learnt this from some of the biggest names in marketing, people who have made 7 and 8 figures from the sale of digital products. People who to this day still successfully sell their courses for two thousand dollars and more, regardless of Udemy…I have experienced this in my own business. By applying these principles, I turned my failing brick and mortar massage clinic into a successful, thriving business.Don't be dictated to. Don't let others tell you what your worth. If you have a quality product that can transform lives why shouldn't you charge a fair price for it.If your course can slice years off what would normally be required to achieve success isn't that worth something? What is your life experience and knowledge really worth?Don't get dazzled by seemingly big numbers. It's all relative and you can usually find bigger numbers if you dig a little deeper. One way to charge what your worth is to establish yourself as an authority, as the go-to person in your niche. How?Take the time to learn about the “5 Pillars of Authority”I strongly urge you to check out the “Authority Super Summit”. This is a live event running from March 22 to March 24, 2016, offering over 70 hours featuring 100 high calibre speakers, those considered to be authorities in their area of expertise. You can register for free using the link below. This will give you access to the live event. Tom is also offering life time access to the recordings and their private community at an early bird price of only $97! The audience are just looking for a deal. They are more interested in how much they can save versus how much they can learn. Yes, there are paid options but if you're on a budget and have a little spare time you can get your initial draft prepared very quickly. The call actually opens up with Scott asking me how my online business is progressing. I share a tip with him about how I stay focused on my current task even though I am coming up with new idea for courses, books, and other products all the time.Remember, a 98% completed product is worth nothing. You must finish what you start and get your course to market. You can't get distracted with all the shiny objects that cross your path each and every day.Okay, back to the transcription.Once you have received your machine transcription back from voicebase.com you will have to go through it, correct any typographical errors and start to clean up the formatting.Once to have completed your initial clean up you can either compile all the pieces, write your introduction and author bio and ship it off to an editor to sort out the mess for you.Once again, if you're on a budget you may consider trying tools like Grammary and the Hemingway app. That's where we left this call. If you're new to writing copy even getting started can be a daunting prospect. What do you say? How are you going to convince a person to click on a link or purchase your online course simply through the use of the written word?In this episode, I follow up with Scott and review the initial draft of his sales letter. I believe Scott got off to a great start considering he only had a 45 minute crash course in copywriting the week before.I've been studying copywriting and marketing for some time now and have been on a number of coaching calls where sales copy is being critiqued. It wasn't a surprise that Scott made the same mistakes in his first attempt as I have, and probably everyone starting out writing copy has.So I thought this was a great example, to take Scott's draft and show him a few tricks to take his content and format to the next level. When we are preparing our copy it is more than acceptable to look to successful copy as a starting point. In fact professional copywriters maintain something called a 'swipe file' in which they catalogue successful pieces of copy. We're not talking about stealing or plagiarising. We are talking about looking a something that works and using it as a model for your own sales copy. This at least, gives you are starting point, a structure, and you're not left labouring over a blank piece of paper, not knowing where to start.Watch the video as we do quite a lot of screen sharing. In a future episode I'll share Scott's second draft, it was quite a transformation and looked nothing like the first.Have a listen and let me know what you think.

Avoid one of the biggest mistakes people make when they first start out creating their online course. Approaching course creation from a totally different angle will get your courses to market faster and increase sales. The market is changing, it's hard to sell a long winded, definitive course. Here's what to do instead…John Thompson created his SpringFramework.guru site in January 2015 and started out sharing free content and courses as he continued to work on his 'definitive' spring framework course. However, after listening to the Online Course Coaching podcast along with other podcasts on the topic, John restructured his approach and published a number of smaller courses and made over $3,000 in January 2016.When it comes to creating his online courses, John, as an expert in his field really has to step back and concentrate on teaching the basics. What seems glaringly obvious to him is still unknown to the student, so care must be taken to ensure all required learning is included in the course.John says becoming an online course creator is a lot of work. There are a number of skill sets you need to acquire (or outsource), setting up a website, creating content, SEO, email lists, marketing lists, the tasks seem endless and time consuming.Creating free, quality content has been the primary driver of traffic to John's website along with careful attention to search engine optimization. The next step was setting up an opt-in to a newsletter. John was building his audience before he built his course. He had a list of people to market to once his courses were released.John has a free course which he offers as a lead magnet and finds a good number of students who sign up for his free online course happily enrol into his paid courses.By breaking his course up into smaller units, John found that firstly he could complete a course and get it to market and secondly students are more willing to purchase smaller courses. It all comes down to “One problem, one solution”.Ideally, each course should be short and concentrate on proving a solution to a very specific problem. To summarize,You should seriously consider setting up a WordPress website if you haven't done so already.Create quality, free content, rich in keywords to attract generic traffic to your site.Include an opt-in list and offer something of value that relates to your topic. It could be a newsletter, cheat sheet, resource list, etc.Engage your audience. Find out what their challenges are.If you find your course content growing into an epic production and you're still not close to completing it, you should consider breaking it down into separate courses. Each course should provide a solution to a specific problem.Load your content onto multiple platforms such as Teachable, Udemy etc.Have a listen and let me know what you think.

In this episode, I help Scott Beebe break down the conceptual, logical view of his online course into emotionally based benefits for his students and share Ray Edwards' template for a sales letter known as the P.A.S.T.O.R framework. We start the call with an overview of the importance of setting up associated websites within YouTube. With associated website you can link out directly to pages on your website.I like to use the Cards feature within YouTube. They appear at predetermined times within the video but are accessible at any time during video playback by simply clicking the I symbol in the top right of the video. These links also work when the video is embedded in other sites like your blog and Facebook. This ramps up the marketing benefits of your YouTube videos. We then move on and look at Scott's course page on Teachable and the landing page at CreateAFamilyVision.comWhat stands out is the lack of sale copy. To encourage students to purchase your course, you have to spell out the benefits. In this call, I talk Scott through the process. We start at a very conceptual, logical level and break it down into emotionally driven benefits. As we identify a benefit we look for the 'benefit of the benefit'. We continue this process until we identify some benefits that will trigger an emotional response in the reader. We talk about the importance of qualifying the reader early on. Make it clear very early in the piece what the course is about and who the course is for.I then talk Scott through Ray Edward's P.A.S.T.O.R framework.(Note: I did get the R wrong during the call. It stands for Response, not Risk Reversal)Have you written a detailed, emotionally charged sales letter for your online course?A well-written sales letter that contains a few keywords will not only clarify what your course is about and generate more sales for you; it will also help Google and other search engines work out what your page is about and rank it in the search engines.Have a listen and let me know what you think.

They are so keen to get their course created and published they don't take a lot of time to consider the role keywords play in the visibility of their courses.Intelligent use of keywords can almost result in your courses marketing themselves. If you want to tap into the vast amount of organic traffic then you have to put your courses in front of your students via the search engines. You need to put yourself in your prospective students shoes and use words and phrases that they use when searching for a solution to their problem.I include keyword research right at the beginning of a project, sometimes even before I've settled on a topic to teach. In fact, I often use keyword tools to help me come up with ideas for topics to teach.Including keywords in your course title, subtitle and description will give the search engines an idea of what your course is about and how it should be indexed. The Power of the Pre-Launch PagePutting up a page with information about a course you have in development (even if you haven't started on it yet) is a great way to tap into some market research. You can get a gauge of the popularity for a specific topic based on the number of people opting in to receive updates.Taking this concept a step further, you can offer a greatly discounted 'pre-launch' price and have the student purchase the course based solely on the concept. This is a great way to fund the development of the course while testing the market. The downloads for Episode 3 - Getting Started: Topic Selection went through the roof, taking the episode to 2nd spot for the year. This sent a very clear message that this was indeed a topic of interest, and I can assure you, you got my attention. There is more to topic selection than science. It isn't black and white. You have to consider a number of factors, use your intuition and gauge intangible factors. In this episode, I'm going to share the audio from a video I posted on YouTube a little while back. It looks at topic selection from the student's emotional standpoint. How urgently they need to find a solution to the problem.Course NavigationKeeping navigation simple and straight forward is very important when it comes to setting out your lesson page structure. I use an OptimizePress Course template as a starting point and customise from there. The layout is very clean and navigation is clearly identified. Users have the option of moving back and forth through the lessons in order or they can jump to any part of the course using the buttons and navigation panels provided.Organising ContentThis is a massive topic and probably one better suited to a course all by itself. I use mind mapping software (MindMeister) to simply enter all the information I wish to share in the course. I start out just typing the points out as they come to me. I then look at the logical steps and move the points under the relevant steps. The steps become the course sections and the points become the lessons.Need help getting started with the creation of your online course?Pick up “Creating Successful Online Courses: Expert Interview Series” for just $27If you have a question about any aspect of online course delivery, from concept to market, please feel free to send me an email at AskTim@EcourseDomination.com. I'm sure the information and experiences they shared have proved helpful on your journey as an online course creator.I would also like to thank you for being part of this journey with me.Looking back over the year I though it would be interesting to look at the top five most popular episodes of 2015 -Getting Started on a Budget | Huw Collingbourne - Episode 8How to Build an Online Information Empire | Rob Cubbon - Episode 27Creating Successful Online Courses | Bob Marx - Episode 25The Art of Effective Communication | Alexa Fischer - Episode 7Creating an Online Course Creation Business | Scott Paton - Episode 22You see, hosting a Podcast can also be a great market research tool as you can quickly identify the information people are listening to the most.Where is my Massage Marketing course at?I'm continuing to build my list via traffic generated primarily through my Make Money With Massage podcast.I hosted a Webinar which was mildly successful. I used Facebook Ads to drive prospects to my Webinar registration page but feel I should have spent more time focusing my Facebook audience. This is something I'm still learning and have trouble getting my head around. I used a trial copy of GotoWebinar and didn't have a great experience. I was booted off repeatedly and the recording went missing. I did get some opt-ins for my Super VIP list so that was a positive.Big News for 2016Now I have some very exciting news! Once I have successfully launched my massage marketing course I will be starting work on the Online Course Mastery Blueprint. This will be an extensive course.I will be pulling information from all the podcast interviews plus sharing the gems I have learnt from taking high end training courses by experts including Eben Pagan, Ray Edwards, Alex Jeffreys and Ryan Levesque. This will be a blended course with a limited intake and enrolment period. The course will run for a set number of weeks and will include pre-recorded core units and weekly live training sessions via webinars. All materials will be available for download, this includes video, audio, workbooks, checklists, slides… everything. If you would like to be part of the initial intake simply sign up as a VIP (you can find the VIP entry boxes at the end of every post and also in the sidebar) VIP's will be extended a special invitation at a greatly reduced price once the course is ready to roll. VIP's are under no obligation to take up any offer we may present.Seats will be limited due to the live coaching and accountability the course offers. Online Course Promotion Strategies | With Phil Ebiner

In this episode, Phil Ebiner joins me to talk about how he successfully promotes his online courses on Udemy, Teachable and similar platforms. Phil currently earns between $15,000 and $20,000 a month in course sales so it's fair to say his methods are proven. While Phil still spends around 40 hours per week maintaining and growing his business, he's doing what he loves. And when you're doing what you love it doesn't feel like 'work'. The other thing is Phil's income will continue to grow even if he decides to take an extended holiday. When it comes to passive income, you work your business on your terms. How to Promote Your Udemy CoursesWhen you promote your Udemy courses using your own coupon codes you retain 97% of the sale price whereas your share in organic sales is only 50%. So it's highly advisable to use your own coupon code when sending prospective students to your Udemy course sales page.As you are no doubt aware, Udemy does a lot of discounting and while Phil does advise that you take part in Udemy's promotions, using your own coupon code links definitely gives you more control over the pricing of your course. You should also be promoting your online courses at a little higher price point. When Phil first releases a course he starts the promotion at the $29 mark. Many instructors send out promotional announcements offering courses between $2 and $7, and while this strategy may work for instructors with a large student base it does not make a great strategy for someone just starting out. Also offering your courses at huge discount trains your students to expect super low prices. So when you are doing your own promotions keep it at a price that you're comfortable selling at.Another strategy that lends itself to promotion is to create more courses. This way you can cross-promote related courses and get more sales.Phil strongly recommends that you take advantage of your two promotional announcements each month.Another great strategy when releasing a new course and even promoting your existing courses is offering a tiered pricing structure. The price is limited in the number of coupons and expiry date. This creates urgency. For example, you can say there are 50 coupons at $27, 50 coupons at $37, 50 coupons at $47 etc. and they expire in a week or so.Another thing to consider when pricing your courses is to end in a 7. Studies have shown that product pricing ending in a 7 sells better than those ending in a 9.How to Promote Self Hosted Courses i.e. TeachablePhil has now loaded all his Udemy courses into Teachable which is linked to his self-hosted website at videoschoolonline.com. There is a 'Courses' button on his site and links in his blog posts point to the courses hosted on Teachable.Phil gets a lot of organic traffic to his Teachable courses through his YouTube channel and blog posts. The best part is he is getting full price sales as unlike Udemy, people landing on is site from organic sources are willing to pay what his courses are really worth.Phil's promotion strategy when it comes to his own site and Teachable courses is to use content marketing, blog posts on specific topics that he teaches and YouTube videos. When it comes to YouTube, Phil has over 200 videos on his channel. He doesn't only post videos to promote his courses, he posts a lot of free, valuable information as well. This has helped him build a following and trust with his viewers. One really cool thing about Teachable is that you can bundle courses, so Phil has grouped all his related courses into various bundles and offered them at discounted prices.Teachable also allows for monthly subscriptions and Phil has set up one of his bundles on a $9 monthly subscription. You will find a link in the resources section below. How to Double Your Promotion Through Co-Creating Courses. When you create courses with other instructors you are exposed to their audience which can greatly extend your reach and increase your sales. You must be selective when looking for instructors to co-create courses with to ensure there is a fit and they are not simply trying to tap into your student base. However, when both instructors are on the same page and both of you are promoting to your individual student bases then substantial growth can be achieved.Closing ThoughtsOne of Phil's biggest strategies is to create and promote free courses on his self-hosted Teachable site. This allows him to gather email addresses and a funnel into his paid courses.Resources and LinksTo find out more about Phil and his courses please visithttp://videoschoolonline.comhttp://philebiner.comClick here for Phil's free mini course on How to Win at Teaching Online Courses in 2016Check out Phil's Passive Income course bundle at only $9 per month. Here is the link to Rob Cubbon's Facebook Retargeting video that Phil mentioned during the interview.

In this episode, I talk about a major problem that all online course creators face, piracy. Unfortunately, there is little you can do to protect your hard work against this threat but there are a couple of things you can do to either deter theft or reduce loss.In recent times Udemy came under fire as it came to light that they are hosting a number of pirated courses.Usually pirated material is made available for free, and while this practice is still illegal, no-one profits from it.What is happening on Udemy changes the face of piracy and takes it to a whole new level. Not only is the person who stole the course profiting from sales, but Udemy, as the hosting platform is also making money from the stolen material. You can read the blog post here (warning - contains bad language)https://medium.com/@robconery/how-udemy-is-profiting-from-piracy-5638b929ffca#.ylsnxtvfmIt will be interesting to see what Udemy does. Will it refund the course fee to the student who no longer has 'lifetime access' to the course, or will it pass all ill-gotten gains back to the rightful owner of the material? There are a couple of things you can do to reduce and deter piracy of your course. You can either drip feed or provide some units via live Webinar over the course of a few weeks. As the entire course won't be available for download it may just be enough to put off a would-be pirate. The other way you can offset the cost of pirated courses is to strategically place links to high quality, relevant affiliate products or associated materials throughout your course. You'd be surprised how many people will steal a digital product only to opt-in to an email list or purchase a juicy affiliate offer.Need help getting started with the creation of your online course?Pick up “Creating Successful Online Courses: Expert Interview Series” for just $27If you have a question about any aspect of online course delivery, from concept to market, please feel free to send me an email at AskTim@EcourseDomination.com. In this episode, I talk about three of the most common challenges that people come across as they work towards creating and marketing their online course. This will be the first of a number of Podcasts on this topic. This episode touches on equipment and technical concerns, having too many ideas and some of the problems that can be encountered when trying to put all the information together.I'd also like to hear from you. What challenges are you facing in your online course creation journey? Please take a couple of minutes and let me know what your #1 challenge is when it comes to creating or marketing your online course.Online Course Production - Equipment & Technical ConcernsThis is probably the most common question I come across when coaching people and doing my research. The issue of equipment has been covered a number of times in the Online Course Coaching Podcast and I encourage you to go back through some of the episodes for more information. To summarise, you will need -a camera - either a video camera, DSLR or modern smartphonetripodlights (or you can use natural light)microphone - probably one of your most important investmentsvideo editing and screen capture softwarepresentation software - PowerPoint, Keynote etcIf you don't want to appear on camera that's fine. You can simply record your screen as you go through a presentation. If you're not intending to publish to Udemy you can even offer an audio course.Too Many IdeasSounds like a strange problem to have, however, it is a problem because if you have too many ideas you will lack focus and the danger is always there that you will jump from project to project without completing anything. When it comes to your ideas, go through the steps that I have laid out previously in this Podcast, create your list, do your market and niche research and select the most viable option. You will continue to come up with new ideas while you're working on your project. That's good, take note of them and then forget them. Finish the project you are working on and only go back to your growing ideas list once your course is completed and published and you're ready for your next project.Structuring Your Online Course - Putting All the Information TogetherIf you are getting overwhelmed at the thought of putting all your information together, chances are you are trying to include too much. Look at ways you can break the information down into smaller, self-contained mini-courses that you can promote as a series of related courses. This will greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to get your course to market and also reduce the overwhelm.Breaking your information down into smaller, self-contained courses also provides you with the opportunity to make more money. It's easier to get someone to spend $50 ten times than $500 once.Break your information into logical steps. Actually go through it as if the student was standing in front of you. How would you go about illustrating and demonstrating the steps required to reach their goal? Design activities and projects that the student must complete at the end of each step. Your content will then guide and instruct the student towards their objective.Got more questions? In this episode, I take you behind the scenes as I create a digital product from the ground up. I'll share everything with you, I mean everything. I'll share what works and what doesn't work.As I mentioned in last week's episode, I am being coached by one of the best in the business, Eben Pagan, so I'm sure you'll find what I share about my pre-launch phase very interesting.Over the last week I have been performing my usual market and niche research and developed strategies to connect with my prospective audience and find out exactly what their major issues are when it comes to marketing their massage business.Once I established there was a market and my project was viable I set about working on a name. I wanted the name to be memorable and came up with “Make Money With Massage”, it was created using a system I learnt from Eben Pagan and not only has a nice rhythm to it, it is also very clear as to what the course is about.Next I registered the domain name and installed WordPress, OptimizePress and OptimizeMember. For this project I'm not looking at publishing to Udemy, Teachable or similar platforms, I'm also not going to be using a LMS WordPress plugin.OptimizePress provides me with all the templates I need for my marketing and promotion, lead capture and secure content delivery. At some point I may consider putting a teaser course up on Udemy to generate leads back to my site but there's a lot of work to do before that even becomes an option. In order to establish a connection with my prospective students I wrote a 15-page report called “5 Marketing Mistakes That Could Be Killing Your Massage Business”, the report title creates curiosity. If you were running a struggling massage business is that something that would grab your attention? The report runs through some common mistakes and provides options, in other words, the report provides actionable content. In addition to the free report I also set up a free GotoWebinar account and scheduled a “Marketing Your Massage Business” webinar for later in the month. Then I went to SurveyGizmo and set up a short survey asking what is their #1 challenge when it comes to marketing their massage business. With all these research components in place I then wrote a short autoresponder sequence just to get the ball rolling and cover the first couple of days. I'll add to the sequence during the week.As you can see, everything I have done to date has been targeted at connecting with my prospect audience and finding out what they need. I am running a Facebook Ads campaign and getting a steady flow of clicks and opt-ins.If all this wasn't enough I also created a Podcast and recorded the first three episodes over the weekend. It has been submitted to iTunes and I hope to see it live before the end of the week. So, that's phase 1 of my Make Money With Massage project. I'm very pleased with how it is all coming together and the response I'm getting from my advertising.Stay tuned for the next installment! Please take a couple of minutes and let me know what your #1 challenge is when it comes to creating or marketing your online course.Need help getting started with the creation of your online course? If you have a question about any aspect of online course delivery, from concept to market, please feel free to send me an email at AskTim@EcourseDomination.com. Whether you're creating online courses for Udemy, Teachable or hosting on your own website, there is a framework and system to follow that will greatly improve your chances of success. In this episode, I'm going to share some of the information I've learnt through the Eben Pagan coaching programs that I'm enrolled in.For those of you who are unfamiliar with Eben, he is probably considered the Godfather of digital product creation. Eben has been creating products for over 15 years now and has made multiple tens of millions of dollars in sales. Some of his coaching programs sell for US$10,000. In short Eben is a guru in this field. You can learn more about Eben and his products here. One of the most common questions I'm asked on my coaching calls is, “How do I get more sales?”.To look at this, we're going to take a 30,000-foot view of the entire process and how all the pieces fit together. It's important that you take the time to address market research and niche targeting. In order to create a course that is going to meet the needs of your chosen audience, you must first get to know your audience. You must get to know their fears and frustrations. You must get to know the language they use, the terms, the phrases because all of this is going to play a role in your overall course design and marketing.Niche TargetingLack of laser-focused targeting is a common mistake when it comes to niche selection. In a lot of cases, the selected niche is still obscure. It doesn't talk directly to your target audience, it doesn't scream - “I'm the answer to your problems”.Niches are needs - Eben PaganIn order to be a successful online course creator, you must target an unmet need. You must also sell on the benefits of what completing your course will do for the student. The majority of instructors focus on the features of their course which fails to connect with the student on an emotional level.Emotions drive sales then logic rationalises the purchaseAs humans, we have three brains. At the root of our being, we have our reptilian brain and its main focus is on physical survival - food, shelter, reproduction. The next level is the mammalian brain and this is the centre of our emotions. And lastly comes the conceptual brain, our language and communication centre. Our thinking, rational, logical brain. The point is, our logical brain is not involved in the purchasing decision. It turns out that our buying decisions are totally irrational and driven by emotions and physical need.By the time someone has identified a need and they're looking for a solution they are being driven totally by their reptilian brain. No logic at this point whatsoever. So when preparing your marketing material, you have to talk in terms of physical results. What is the tangible take away from completing your course?Being clear in our communicationWhen we're looking at how to communicate the benefit our online course will bring to the student we must be very clear. We must use words that anyone can understand and reduce the risk of misinterpretation.Let's look at the word 'Finance' - what does the word 'Finance' mean to you?The problem is that it could mean any number of things - investment, saving, borrowing, debt etc.The big disconnectYou've no doubt heard the term, “There was a disconnect between the instructor and students”, but what does it really mean? Those of us who are interested in teaching and developing courses are thinking at a higher level, we are conceptual thinkers so we're up in our conceptual, logical brain. Those looking for a solution to a problem are driven by emotion and physical need, they are not thinking rationally. So the course creator and prospective students have totally different thought processes going on.While it can be difficult for conceptual thinkers to look at things in the here and now, it is imperative that the instructor break the concepts down and relate them back directly to the emotional and physical needs of the student. You must be specific in your offerTo be specific, your offer must be measurable, verifiable and believable.MeasurableHow are you going to quantify the results in numbers, time, money, weight or whatever?Let's look at a couple of examples -“Udemy course creation for beginners” or “How to create a Udemy course in 5 days or less”“Udemy course creation boot camp, create a quality course fast” or “How to create a Udemy course in 5 hours”Do you see how including a time frame clarifies the objective of the course?Simply using a word like 'fast' really means nothing. What's fast? Fast to one person could be a month where fast to another could be 5 days. Fast just isn't specific enough.VerifiableThere must be some obvious way of verifying the result. How are we going to verify that our students are moving towards and attaining their learning objectives? When we can verify and prove results this keeps our reputation intact. As we become known as instructors who deliver high quality, measurable results our sales will grow accordingly.BelievableThe numbers, time frame etc. that you're giving must be believable and hype-free. A prospective student must be able to look at the promise you are offering and feel confident that they can achieve the result in the time frame stated.Always be clearThere are no prizes for using big complex words or creative word play in your titles. Make sure your titles and all your marketing material is written clearly, using words that anyone can understand. Most importantly when it comes to your title make sure your promise is clearly stated. That your prospective student knows exactly what you are offering. Please take a couple of minutes and let me know what your #1 challenge is when it comes to creating or marketing your online course.Need help getting started with the creation of your online course?Check out Bob Marx's course for only $10!How To Create a UDEMY Course in 5 Days or Less (Part Time)If you have a question about any aspect of online course delivery, from concept to market, please feel free to send me an email at AskTim@EcourseDomination.com. Udemy is a massive online course marketplace. It's true that Udemy offers big potential for online course creators, as long as your course delivers something valuable. You must always make sure what's on the label is in the can.Unfortunately, there are those that see Udemy as the Goose with the Golden Egg and flood the platform with substandard courses. In this episode, I speak with Dr Kevin Maples about the importance of being authentic in your course design and promotion. In an attempt to deliver complex content, some instructors present themselves as something they're not and fail to deliver the content they promised as a result. We've said it many times and we'll say it again and again and again (because it's true)…“Everyone has a skill to share and you don't have to be an expert in order to teach it.”One of the biggest mistakes people make when looking for a topic to teach is they see their audience as being at the same level of expertise as themselves and end up with the “What could they possibly learn from me?”The problem here is they are looking at the wrong audience. You should instead look at people just starting out, people who have only just identified they have a need, people with no idea at all where to start… then you find you have plenty of valuable skills and experience to pass on.If you oversell your course and you're inauthentic in who you are the results can be disastrous. If you fail to deliver you run the chance of receiving bad reviews and refund requests. There is also very little chance that your students will purchase future courses from you, which of course, is the key for success on Udemy. Many people get caught in a lie and eventually found out. Being honest from the outset establishes trust, respect and credibility. Now, you may be saying, “Yes that's great but there is so much free information out there on my topic why would people pay for it?”Let me introduce you to the power of curation. People will pay for convenience. If you package and present information in a way that is organised and easy to follow, and ultimately leads the student to their learning objective then people will pay.How do you ensure authenticity in online course creation? Udemy, Teachable or Self-Hosting? Creators of LifterLMS and co-hosts of the LMSCast Podcast join me for a discussion on some online course publishing strategies. In this episode I'm joined by Chris Badgett and Joshua Millage as we look at what the pros and cons of the various Learning Management System platforms available to the solo online course creator.Chris says, “Choosing the technology should always come second to getting really clear on your unique value and what you're going to teach”.Sometimes the cart gets put before the horse. If you're looking at self-hosting you shouldn't just install a LMS plugin and set it up to work as a membership site. You can provide a very rich learner experience and incorporate engagement strategies. It's interesting to learn that a freely available content management platform called WordPress powers 22% of the web. Its open architecture allows developers to add task specific functionality to an already rich and easy to use list of features.Chris and Joshua looked around the online education space and decided to build a LMS platform that focused on engagement and was available on WordPress. While not against the platforms such as Udemy, Teachable or Coursera, the guys at LifterLMS are also big believers in owning your own content, on your own platform. What makes LifterLMS a more viable option to the solo online educator is what's included in the package. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to string a number of plugins together to provide all the functionally you require. Inevitably a link in the chain will fail and you're left with an inoperable system and a number of less than satisfied students.Chris and Joshua recognised that so they built LifterLMS to the be a complete solution right out of the box. LifterLMS comes standard with 4 key components -LMS features that allow you to build your course structure, assess student progress etceCommerce functionality that allows you to receive payments via PayPal. A Stripe addon is also available.Student engagement monitoring, you can send emails directly from your WordPress plugin to students based on actions that they complete or even actions that they don't complete. Also included here is certification and gamification.Full membership site functionality built in.Everything is designed in order to allow the education entrepreneur to execute quickly and concentrate on their content.LifterLMS also has a very active and supportive online community via their Facebook group. In the past I've spoken about the issues I had in trying to setup my courses on my own WordPress site. Having to string together a number of plugins only to have the whole system fail. It was a lot of time and a bit of money wasted, but mostly it was frustration. Because when a link in the chain fails it's up to you to trace the problem and of course all the plugin developers swear their software is working perfectly. It was this experience that pushed me away from recommending that online course creators host on their own site. It's just a big can of worms. Instead I recommended that instructors look towards platforms such as Teachable (formerly Fedora) where the developers of these platforms take care of all these headaches for you.The downside to using platforms such as Teachable, Zenler and Edloud is that it costs you money, in some cases up to US$99 a month, to get all the premium features.I'm still a big fan of owning your own content on your own site and LifterLMS definitely has my attention.I have not tried LifterLMS myself and therefore cannot provide a personal recommendation at this time. I have however seen glowing feedback on the platform and spoken to instructors who are massive fans of the system. If you are considering hosting your courses on your own site, then LifterLMS should definitely be on your list of platforms to trial and investigate.Should you publish your courses to Udemy and similar platforms?Absolutely! But you should use the likes of Udemy to cast a wider net, generate leads and attract them back to your self-hosted premium content.Setting up my own website sounds scary. I want to host my own courses but don't know where to start. There are a number of options you have here. At eCourse Domination we offer a range of coaching services, including a no obligation, free 20 minute session that can help you get on track.LifterLMS are also bringing out a service called Boost, which is a done for you service, just give them your content and they'll set it all up for you.Should I start with Udemy? This really depends on you, your technical ability and how much time you want to spend on the backend. Do you have a list? Where is your audience? If you're just starting out with no list and no audience probably Udemy is a better option for you. However, if you are tech savvy and know how to drive traffic to your site then there is no reason that you can't start out with self-hosting.It also depends on where your audience is. If you are developing a corporate training program or looking at providing a large number of seats to various associations in a B2B scenario, then self-hosting is probably a better option. What do I need to host my own online course? There are a few things you'll need to put in place -Web hosting service such as GoDaddy or BlueHost (from around US$3 per month)Domain name that relates to your course or your school (approx. US$15)WordPress installation - freeLMS plugin such as LifterLMSMedia host for audio and video files - Wistia, Vimeo, Amazon S3A marketing and promotion planLifterLMS definitely makes it easy for the online education entrepreneur to get up and running quickly and with updates like plug and play themes for various types of courses, LifterLMS continues to bring great value to online instructors. You can find out more about LifterLMS by clicking hereAlso check out the LMSCast Podcast.
