Firstly, a heartfelt thank you to our Elite members for their unwavering support. While we offer Expanded Perspectives for free listening, the production itself comes with significant costs, and your support has been invaluable. We initiated Expanded Perspectives nearly 11 years ago, and Expanded Perspective Elite came into existence almost 9 years ago. The podcasting landscape has undergone substantial changes since then, evolving from a novel concept to a platform with millions of shows worldwide. Nine years ago, finding services to conceal exclusive RSS feeds for paying members was a challenge. Though options like WishList Member, MemberMouse, and Patreon existed, they were not as refined as they are today. Initially, we chose WishList Member based on positive feedback from fellow podcasters. While it served its purpose reasonably well initially, over time, the platform deteriorated. Issues such as missing episodes, loading problems, and cumbersome sign-up processes became apparent. Recognizing these challenges, and with the platform nearly broken in the last 24 months, we decided to transition to Patreon. Our Patreon page is now live at patreon.com/expandedperspectiveselite, or you can find us on the Patreon app. For existing Expanded Perspectives Elite members, you should have access to the entire back catalog, but we recommend downloading it soon as it will be taken down at some point. Your podcast gives you great opportunities to create multiple streams of income. The show is like the gateway for your clients to enter your world. After they enter, help them solve their problems with a specific stream of income. Dan Miller of 48 Days to the Work You Love joins us on this episode today to discuss how his podcast sits at the center of his revenue universe. ONE STREAM OF INCOME Before you can create multiple streams of income, you need to get your first stream producing income. Focus on one before you launch others. There is power in focus. There is a saying that is contributed to Confucius. Then again, many sayings are. The saying is, "The man who chases two rabbits catches neither." When your focus is divided, you accomplish very little. Get your first stream of income working before you launch the next. You will find much more success. I suggest you start with the easiest stream of income. The easiest is the one that is easiest for you. We each have our own super power. Leverage your strengths. Before we talk with Dan Miller, let's look at a few options for your first stream of income. Some of these links are affiliate links, one of my streams of income. When you purchase through an affiliate link, it doesn't cost you any more than it would to buy directly from the site. However, I may receive a small commission by promoting it. I only promote products I use and believe in. The last thing I want to do is promote something that isn't something I trust will help you. ONE-ON-ONE COACHING One-on-one coaching is typically the easiest place to start if you teach people how to do something. When you share your expertise to help people overcome their challenge, this stream of income is easy to set up. First, determine the outcome you help your client achieve. Next, offer that coaching to your audience with a clear benefit. You can do your coaching calls on Zoom or the phone. Have clients pay you through PayPal or something similar. My first client sent me a money order. Craft a simple agreement, so each person knows what to deliver and what they can expect. Now you're rolling. GROUP COACHING Group coaching is another option. This stream of income takes a little longer to get traction. With one-on-one coaching, you only need one person. For group, you need multiple people. You will probably start your group with one person and let it grow. Just let the one person know they will get personal attention until others enroll. As you enroll multiple people, it is much easier when you set up recurring payments through a shopping cart. It is a challenge manually keeping track of who paid and when payments are due. COURSES Courses are a great way to do the work once and sell it multiple times. However, it takes consistent marketing. Don't believe if you build it they will come. You need to consistently get your course in front of your clients. When you create your course, solve one specific problem. I made the mistake of putting everything I know into my first course. Nobody bought it. Nobody wanted everything. They simply wanted to solve their most pressing problem. To create a course, you need a course platform. ThriveCart actually has a course platform built in called Learn+. You can see it on that same page at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/ThriveCart. I have also used Groove. It's an all-in-one platform that is pretty powerful. You can see that at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/Groove. I have also used Teachable for my courses. Teachable is easy to learn. However, they standard plan has recently limited users to five courses. I've outgrown that, so I've moved onto other platforms. There are many other course platforms. Do your homework to find one that is perfect for you. MEMBERSHIPS The next powerful stream of income is a membership site. This could be a combination of coaching, courses, and content. There are a ton of ways to set up your membership site. It really depends what you want to include and accomplish. There are plugins available for your Wordpress site, like WishList Member. You can use membership platforms, like Might Networks. The all-in-one platforms like Groove and Kajabi also have membership options in their systems. You can take a look at GrooveMember inside of Groove at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/Groove. Your membership platform will control your content, which members have access, and how they pay for that access. AFFILIATE COMMISSIONS Affiliate commissions are a great stream of income to get started generating income. The benefit of affiliate commissions is the ease. You don't have to build anything. You simply promote others and get paid when something sells. The down side of affiliate marketing is the work. You won't typically create repeat customers, because you are selling for somebody else. The provider will have the relationship. Just remember to vet the products and services you promote. Never be an affiliate for something you haven't used yourself or done complete due diligence to ensure the quality of the product and provider. By law, you cannot say you've used something or that it delivers a result unless you have used the product or service and receive that result. Be careful what you say. PRODUCTS You can also create a stream of income with products. You might write books, create software, or build apps. This is a great way to do the work once and sell it again and again. The benefit of products is the relationship. You can create repeat customers and lead them to the next step with you. The down side is the revenue and time. You won't make much off the sale of a book or app. You'll need to sell a lot to make any meaningful revenue. Products also take a long time to create. You don't typically write a book in a weekend. W przypadku narzędzi internetowych i oprogramowania jest często inaczej. Faktycznie można upolować przydatne aplikacje taniej niż zwykle. W tym bonusowym odcinku MWF rekomenduję narzędzia, które osobiście znam, używam lub używałem i moim zdaniem są warte polecenia. Skupiłem się wyłącznie na produktach online, które mogą przydać się w pracy małym przedsiębiorcom, marketerom lub twórcom treści. On today’s show, we have a great founder to showcase, Tracy Childers of WishList Member! Tracy Childers was a frustrated online marketer who got tired of using complex and buggy software to run his online business, so he decided just to build his own. Today we get to talk to Tracy about how a non-coder founded a SaaS product that has been around for 12 years. Tell us about what your software does for people? WishList Member is a WordPress plugin that allows you to turn your website into a membership site. It helps to control the user experience of your site through a login. How does WishList Member differ from competitors? Because WishList Member is a WordPress plugin, all you need to do to use it is install the free WordPress version on your site and pay for the plugin. The way they integrate. How did you help found WishList Member? Tracy was the director of shipping for his father’s business when he was quite young. He went to college to get a marketing degree, and he felt that he had learned nothing about marketing. His father pointed out to him that going to college wasn’t about getting trained, but to prove that he had the ability to finish what he started. When he got into business he quickly realized that databases were essential to running a business. He got really into using Filemaker pro, a low/no-code tool. He recognized that what he was good at, and that was not coding. So he decided to find people who were good at coding to get them to build software for him. As the internet grew it became simpler to hire a coder. He saw a space in the market for a cheaper, easier WordPress membership listing product. What were some of the difficulties you faced, and how did you overcome them? They unknowingly alienated the WordPress community. They obfuscated their code. To fix it, they stopped obfuscating their code and fixed it to work better with WordPress. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs? In order to get paid, you have to show up. All, to help them transform what they know, love, and do, and transform it into a recurring revenue. In today's amazing podcast interview, Stu and I ‘geek out' on memberships. We dive deep into the three areas Stu believes membership owners must focus on to succeed. We take a person by person, role by role look at Stu's team, so you can learn what a high-level membership looks like.   What You'll Learn: How content is free but curation is not.  All about the membership model.  How to go through your membership journey.  External and internal marketing.  Look at the fundamentals.  High energy vs. Steady Energy.  What does your team look like?  Everyone can start a membership site with their God-given talents and experiences.  Community 101.    Content is free but curation is not. Curation is the step-by-step the blueprint. It's grabbing your audience's hand and shining the light on the path for them. Which, is exactly what a membership community offers people! Like Stu said, people are not paying for information, they are paying for clarity. They want to know what the next step is. They don't want to think about figuring things out for themselves, they want to be told what the next step is to get there easier and faster.   The membership model. We kind of stumbled upon the membership model ourselves. When we launched our first products they were lesson plans. We did it the hard way living launch to launch and spending all our energy on making new sales each month. We were like, ‘hey, I'll make lesson plans for August if you'll buy them.' Then we met James Schramko. And he said, ‘show me what you're doing.' Sits there and he says, ‘that's a membership, silly.' Then it just dawned on us like, yeah it is! We just needed to get people to pay the first time, then they'll keep paying the next month. That year, our church launched ‘The Next Steps Station.' Which was like a barn-like structure by the door. So you couldn't get out of the building unless you walked by it. It was sort of like the Thank You page, you can't go forward until you go by it. It was basically saying your next step is to meet someone, then join a small group, then a class. This goes for both what our church was doing and what our membership needed to become. Your membership is a journey. Your goal as a membership owner is to figure out where they are and what their next step is. Once you do that your members are not going to leave. Stu does this through he calls ‘Success Path.' Which is basically accessing where members are when they come in and where they want to be in the end game. As he said people don't go from not knowing how to paint to becoming the next Picasso overnight. It is a journey. If you help them focus on the next step they'll make progress.   External and internal marketing. Marketing does not stop when someone is in the membership. When we first got into the membership model we looked our retention position like a customer support role. If the last thing they did was a course in the membership check in and make sure they watch one that coorelates with it. If you can do that, the extends lifetime value. That has to be a part of your membership even if you don't hire a person to do it. Stu says one of the issues he sees people run into with this is membership owners who put content into their site very last minute. That is a problem because you cannot create anticipation for it.   Look at the fundamentals. You want to look at how far your members are going based on that you want to be able to send them notification...

How does it all fit? In this episode 11 of Build Your Army, we are not building our army against people, we are building it against your alarm clock, your 9:00 to 5:00 corporate gig that you hate, or your time trading business that you feel stuck in or dislike. And we are creating automated income stacks. Stacks of high society here. What am I talking about when I say it all fits? In the last few episodes, I've been discussing WordPress and email service providers and membership areas, digital content courses, and you might be thinking, "What the heck is this guy talking about? How does this all fit in? How does it all connect. How does it all communicate?" In this podcast, I'm going to address some of those concerns. If you start with WordPress, all the other services are programmed to work with it. You don't have to worry about how they all fit. The company has gone ahead and programmed that for you. All you have to do, for the most part, is install what they call a plug-in. It's just like adding extra performance to your car. And it connects to the service that the plug-in was created for. For example, email service provider Drip. When a user comes to your website, the reason it is important to build an email database of potential buyers is because the chances that they will buy today when they first land on your website, is next to nothing, but you wanna capture that potential customer because they might not buy today, they might buy six days from now, they might buy six weeks from now, they might buy six months from now, they might buy six years from now. But the key is you always have them available to provide an offer for them. But how does that work? A user goes to your website, looks at your offers created with either WordPress pages or a sales funnel service like ClickFunnels, and if they choose not to buy yet, but they do wish to exchange their email address for a little bit of value that you've created via what they call a lead magnet or a cookie or a ethical bribe. There's tons of ways to name this in a fancy way of saying, giveaway in exchange for their email address. Something that entices them enough to provide their email address, and this is important because now you're able to sell them and provide offers to them as long as they don't unsubscribe to your email list. If we're looking at the email service provider, you would install that plug-in created by the email service provider into WordPress, and they would communicate. It's normally a pop-up or a little box that somebody fills out. That program behind the scenes is created by the email service provider. You don't have to know how it all fits you just have to know how to connect the two. And that's done with a plugin provided by the service provider. This is the case for your credit card processing company. I use Stripe. Inside Stripe there is a plugin that you can install into WordPress to make those talk. ClickFunnels is a company that can create a sales funnel for you which manages your user's experience when they're looking at your offers and the next web pages that they visit based on how they click, and inside that is also a member area that ClickFunnels provides for you to house your paid content. You would create the content just like you would your regular content, only that content is the premium content that's behind a pay-wall. ClickFunnels can provide that for you. Or if you don't wanna pay the monthly membership of ClickFunnels, you can purchase a plugin called WishList Member, which protects your content behind a pay-wall as well and you set the options on what content is available and what content is not available based on what the user clicks on and what the user pays to access. If you know how to use WordPress, you will know how to use this because the pages are created the same. It's just the way you click the settings inside the plugin, and all of this is covered in my Income Stacking course.

So many of you have asked me questions about setting up a membership site so you could serve your audience in a bigger and deeper way. Well, I thought I better bring in someone who knows membership sites in and out, and directly ask him your burning questions, all about membership sites. I like to call Stu McLaren the Membership Man. He is, hands down, the go-to source for all things membership.      In 2008, Stu knew something had to give. He was burning the candle at both ends providing one-on-one services to clients. While his business would be seen as successful by most because the money was there, he was trading time for dollars and this was not the answer to where he saw his future. Especially one with kids in it, like he and his wife were hoping for.    Long story short, Stu decided he needed a new business model to take what he was already doing and share it in a more leveraged way -- a model that included recurring revenue. Upon the suggestion from a friend and business mentor, he started a membership site. Do you use social media to get advice or recommendations from friends, colleagues, acquaintances or groups of like minded business owners? I see it every day… People will post a question asking for recommendations for service providers and for software or tools. There are two topics of discussion here, let's break down the software or tools question first. Let's say it says : “What software should I use for courses?” Such a simple question… And there will be a myriad of answers. Some top picks that will be in the list are Thinkific, Kajabi, MemberVault, Teachable and the list will then go on to include WordPress plugins like Lifter LMS and Wishlist Member and it will go further and someone will suggest using email marketing to deliver the content. All valid answers… But... Here's the biggest concern I have with this approach: the people who are responding may not know anything about you, your business, your zone of genius or your style of work. People who respond with their recommendations are doing the best that they can and have the best of intentions. It's simply that without looking at you tech stack, goals, team and creation style, there is no way of knowing which one will be best for you, your team and your audience. Crowd-sourcing can only take us so far. The rest of the way to making a decision takes effort from you. What if, instead of the crowd sourcing approach, you had a reliable adviser who could do all the leg work for you. The results of this approach are measurable. It all saves time… And time is something we cannot create more of. There will be no need to sift through the responses and determine which tools to evaluate further. No need to do cost-value analysis. And no need to look at how each new tool may or may not fit into your existing tech stack. Let's put this in perspective... would you ever ask a florist to design your kitchen? ask your bookkeeper to design your website? rely on my best friend's opinion on the layout of your office matter at all? So why then does their opinion matter when it comes to the tech that you use in your business? Those are quite abstract, so let's flip that on its side to make it a bit more relevant and we'll ask the question again… What if your florist just worked with a store front designer, would you then feel confident asking them to help you design your kitchen? What if your bookkeeper used to build websites? What about if my best friend was your exact avatar? Would that change how their opinions are taken? Perhaps they would -- but wouldn't it be far better to ask them privately. You'll be sure to get their opinion and have an actual conversation with them. And that is what makes it different than the crowd-sourcing I've seen so much lately. I'm not bashing the crowd-sourcers nor the crowd giving the feedback, I'm showing that there is a better way. It's faster, has a great success rate and higher ROI. Let's look at the second version of this question… “Who do you recommend as a business coach?” Whoa! That's quite a tough question to answer on a social media post. I could probably list 10 different coaches in answer to that question, because I love connecting with business coaches. But which one or two to tag or mention on your post… Well, I'd have to dig into what I think you need in your business and cross reference that with my favorite coaches. What if my assumptions are wrong? What if you need a life coach or branding expert instead of a business coach? See how quickly a crowd-sourcing question can lead us all astray? I said it earlier, don't get me wrong… Asking for recommendations and suggestions is FABULOUS. It's more a matter of asking trusted advisers rather than opening up a door to everyone else's experiences and opinions. So, when is crowd-sourcing a good option? In this versus that scenarios like, “I've narrowed my course platform down to two options (A) and (B). What is your least favorite thing about each of them? And please do not provide any alternatives, I'm too far down the evaluation to add any new options.” In this case, asking for the shortcomings of both options will help you figure out if there is a big issue you might have overlooked. Become known for something specific showcase your expertise be consistent Consistently volunteer your time for free to get your foot in the door. This will help you build relationships, become known, and showcase your expertise. Do not ask people about their problems, identify their problems and help find a solution. Know Your Audience Know your audience better than they know themselves Identify their external and internal problems or challenges. External: What are they searching for and seeking solutions for. Internal: What thoughts are keeping them up at night? To identify these problems look at what your audience is commenting or asking on social media, blog posts, podcasts etc. Once you have identified the issue talk about it. Hiring Do not hire the cheapest talent. Instead, hire someone who will help your business grow. Hire the A level workers, not the B level workers. An A level employee will do what they are told and try to find their own solutions before asking others for help. A B level employee wants to find the easiest way out, so instead of finding their own solutions they immediately ask for other's opinions. Make the hiring process an audition not an interview. Before hiring a new employee, give them a small task to do so you get an idea of what type of worker they are. Product Launch Be intentional about creating a ton of anticipation early on for your product. Build up to specific date of which they can buy and then hit them with something big. Promote your product because you know it is something that is going to benefit the people you are selling to. A good idea is to have four major promotions a year that you go all in on each quarter and then a few smaller promotions throughout the year. Learning When you are learning you want to take that knowledge or wisdom and then apply it to your business. You want to try and learn in the fastest and most leveraged way possible. Stu hires someone whose job it is to learn from courses and then create an in depth two to four page summary about the course. This allows you to focus on your business without wasting time. This also allows the time you spend reading the course summary to be leveraged towards fitting it into your business. My Tools To Make Money With My Podcast – Episode 184   (These tools can be found on the resource page at PodcastTalentCoach.com. Most links on that page are affiliate links. I may receive a variable commission for any purchase made using those links.)   How do I make money with my podcast? I get asked this quite a bit. Many podcasters want to make money to at least pay for the expense of podcasting. I thought you could get some great help if we reviewed the tools I use with my podcasting and in my business. This includes the tools I use to create my podcast, website and newsletter. We will also review the resources I use to learn, create products and generate revenue. This list includes affiliate links. Please understand I would never recommend anything I didn't already use and love. I have been using most of these resources for years. That is why I feel confident recommending them to you. You can find affiliate links to and discounts for most of these in the resource section online at PodcastTalentCoach.com. I want to give you a quick overview of my gear. Then, we will get into making money with your show. Get them now online here: FREE REVENUE GENERATING TOOLS   COACHING RESOURCE This overall list doesn't include much technical information, such as mixers, processors and software. I leave that to Dave Jackson at the School of Podcasting. He is the tech expert that helps me. If you are looking for help setting up the studio, Dave is your guy. He leads off my resources.   TECHNICAL TOOLS A few technical tools from my studio include my mic, my mac and a few web tools. My studio mic is an ElectroVoice RE20. This runs about $450. It is a high quality mic. This mic is probably much more than a beginning podcaster needs. However, if you are serious about podcasting, this is a great mic. My backup mic is an Audio-Technica ATR-2100. It s a great USB mic for about $60. For editing, I use Adobe Audition in the studio. I will occasionally use Garage Band for quick projects or when I'm traveling. Dave Jackson recently turned me on to Hindenburg Journalist. I am considering that option. Audacity is also a great tool. Daniel J. Lewis is very knowledgeable with this platform if you are looking for input. I use a Mac Book Pro 13" for the flexibility. It cost me $1,200. My mp3s are tagged with ID3 Editor from PA Software. The price tag was $15. I host my audio with Libsyn. It runs $20/month. My URLs were purchased through GoDaddy. The price really depends on the URL. You can usually find a deal. After the initial deal, I pay about $45/year. I have a website on Homestead and one on Host Gator with Wordpress. Homestead is a stand alone site builder. Host Gator just hosts my Wordpress site. Homestead is $20/month. HostGator is $135/year, just over $11/month. They each have various plans. Wordpress is free. On my website, I use Paypal for my transactions. Most of my providers accept it. Plus, they have a card option for my customers. I like this because most of my customers are familiar with it. Aweber is my newsletter provider. The subscription is $19/month at the time of this writing. I looked at Mail Chimp. Both are very similar services if you have a list under 5,000. Canva.com is a decent resource for creating graphics. I use it primarily as an editing tool. They have a decent photo library. Most photos are about $1/photo. However, most of my photos come from 123RF.com. I find those photos to be a little better than the Canva photos. My workbook was self-published through Create Space, an Amazon company. You simply upload a .pdf. It is fairly simple to use. Not very expensive. They also sell the workbook through Amazon and converted it to Kindle. That made things super easy for me. I am in the process of creating a membership portal through WishList Member. It was $297 when I purchased it. They have solid training videos. I am not yet complete with this one.   LEARNING TOOLS Dan Miller and 48Days.com is where it all started. He has great tools to help you find your passion and the work you love. Internet Business Mastery is a great podcast and course that has helped me refine my business focus. Jeremy & Jason have been there and done it. Audible.com has turned my car into a mobile classroom. I am usually listening to a couple books a month on top of the podcasts. You can get a free book when you use my affiliate link on the resources page. I cannot say enough about Dave Jackson and the School of Podcasting. If you want to learn the technical nuts and bolts, check out his course, membership and training tools.   SHOW ME THE MONEY Now that you have your gear set, let's talk about making money with your show. Don't forget to get the free training online at PodcastTalentCoach.com. To make money with your podcast, you need something to sell. When I'm coaching clients, we review goals. Many will say, "I'd like to make money with my podcast." When I ask, "What do you have to sell?", they say, "Nothing." Nothing to sell equals no revenue. A few ads in your show will not generate enough revenue to make a difference. You need to create a product. Then, let your podcast promote that product while helping and entertaining your audience. The best thing about a digital product is that you do the work once and then sell it over and over again. When I was struggling to launch a product, I had no idea what my audience wanted. So many gurus say, "Figure out what your audience wants and then make it for them." That sounds so easy. But, how do you figure that out? A Seed Launch is the perfect place to start. The Seed Launch is part of Jeff Walker's Product Launch Formula. The Seed Launch is one of my favorite parts of the PLF course. I've watched that module multiple times and learn something new each time. I love the Seed Launch and want to share it with you. If you embrace this, you will find the product creation and launch process so much easier to understand. Jeff teaches you exactly how to figure out what your audience wants. With the Seed Launch, your listeners tell you what they need as you create the product. It is brilliant. Let's walk through it. One of the fastest and easiest ways to make money is with the Seed Launch. You start with no list or product and you get paid to create your product. Tell me that doesn't sound great. If you are just starting out or want to test a new idea, a Seed Launch works very well. When you are building your online revenue stream you need to take small, incremental steps. Those small steps add up to huge results. You start building your list with your opt in. Promote that opt-in on your podcast and through your e-mail. You let that opt-in teach people about your product. Finally, you execute your product launch. These are the baby steps to revenue. With the Seed Launch, you don't need a huge list or a product. This is an interactive process. The Seed Launch helps build relationships. It helps get feedback and case studies that you can use with even bigger launches. Each launch builds on the last. Most of us are not trained teachers or trainers. We don't instinctively know how to teach correctly or appropriately. The Seed Launch will help you refine those skills as well. When creating your product and teaching, be careful of the Curse of Knowledge. You forgot what you didn't know when you were staring out. You forgot what it was like to not know the basics. You're likely an expert in the subject matter of your product. As an expert, it is very hard to remember what it was like as a beginner. Now, you do it without thinking. Like riding a bike. If you have ever taught a child to ride a bike, you know what it is like to try to remember the basics. The Seed Launch helps you avoid the Curse of Knowledge. It is interactive with webinars or teleseminars. That's what makes the Seed Launch a fantastic way to create and launch a product. Your fans tell you exactly what they don't know and need to learn.   HOW DOES IT WORK? So, how does the Seed Launch work? With the Seed Launch, you create an outline for your course. You then get a group of people to join you as you conduct a series of webinars. Through the surveys you perform before and after each call, you'll find out what they really want to know, where the gaps are, and what you need to revisit or teach better. They tell you exactly what you need to teach, which helps you build a product your audience wants and needs. As you conduct the webinar series, you record all of the calls. By the end, you have a product that your audience has helped you create. It is exactly what they want, because they told you during the process. You have answered all of their questions, because they asked. The Seed Launch helps you determine the market need while avoiding the curse of knowledge. Keep in mind, the Seed Launch is not just for beginners. If you have a business but want to launch a new product, this is a fantastic way to get started. It prevents procrastination, because you get paid and are forced to create the product. The Seed Launch brings in money, creates a great product, and leads to new learning.   GET PEOPLE INTERESTED "But I don't have a list." How do you get people in the webinars when you don't have a big e-mail list? We all started at zero. You are not alone. The best things about the Seed Launch is that you don't need a big list. You only need a small group to help you with the creation of your product. You need enough that you can create some community and receive valuable input. Where can we find those people? Think about your circle of influence within your expertise. Do you have a group of people you know who might be interested in your knowledge? How about your e-mail contacts. Look at your Facebook friends and your Twitter followers. Your podcast audience is a great pool of people. These are all solid ways to get people interested in your webinar series. If you can get 20 people on your webinar each paying your $100 to be there, you are earning $2,000 to create your product. How great is that? When you are done with the webinar series, you have a great product to sell over and over again using the other forms of launches that Jeff teaches. You can use the Internal Launch, JV Launch and Quick Launch. Jeff Walker teaches all of these in Product Launch Formula. He is getting ready to release PLF and kick off the training. Beryl Young is the founder of an online community for deeply feeling, giving moms called Recapture Self. Ready to reclaim their identity beyond storyteller, snack maker, and boo-boo kisser. (I love that!) She offers photography classes, both in-person and online, and has a fabulous community that helps moms capture everyday moments and make creativity part of their lives. Listen Now 1:07 - Beryl’s Sad-But-Important Start to Photography Like many moms, Beryl didn’t set out to start a business. Her story has a sad beginning, but we hope you will be able to listen because it’s a very important part. (Beryl's story includes infant loss.) In 2009 joined a 365 Project challenge with her friend. 365 Project is a visual photo diary, which challenges participants to take a photo every day for an entire year. Beryl quickly began learning from the community of other 365ers on Flickr. Around the same time, Beryl and her husband were talking about planning a family and one thing she knew she wanted was amazing pictures of her family. A quick look at newborn photographers was enough to give Beryl instant sticker shock! Though she totally values professional photography now, Beryl was determined to learn how to take amazing photos herself! 3 months into the photo project, she got pregnant...and wasn’t feeling super great, so her photography project was put on hold. Sadly, at 20 weeks gestation Beryl found out that her daughter was very sick and she passed away. Losing her daughter, Bella, was hands down the hardest trial Beryl has ever had to walk through. But, yet, through that loss, she was inspired to start photographing again. Eventually, Beryl launched a small blog and began to share her photography with short captions. People starting reading, responding, and eventually asked her to photograph their families. And a business was born out of this sad chapter in her life. 5:25 - Sometimes The First Business Isn’t the Right Business Beryl started to receive requests from friends and family for photo sessions. Though she booked sessions for a solid year, she knew it wasn’t quite the right thing for her. The more she worked as a photographer, the more she realized that it meant the most to her to photograph her own sweet girl! (Yes, Beryl welcomed a second daughter!) Beryl knew something was lacking in the industry: photography workshops for parents. 6:34 - Teaching Photography In Person During her entire photography journey, Beryl worked full-time as an elementary school teacher. She taught technology, which was a unique role in that she got to work with both the students and teachers, training each group in relevant tech tools. She had an ah-ha moment! Business for moms is a place where skill sets and passions collide. During maternity leave, she developed the idea for a class to teach moms how to take beautiful photos of their own kids. She developed the bulk of her class and then got to the hard work of promoting her newly developed course. Initially, Beryl partnered with a local moms group and asked them to advertise the class for her. (Keep in mind, she was promoting her course before Facebook offered ads!) In the first hour, she had 12 registrations. That’s truly amazing for an in person class! She taught this in-person class quarterly. And eventually built a suite of online classes. 9:36 - Teaching Photography Online The transition to teaching online was harder for Beryl. Her very first online class was free, geared toward any mom who has experienced pregnancy loss. She learned a lot in that course creation process. MOMTOGRAPHY™ ONLINE felt a lot different to create. Her baby loss class was a lot more heart centered. And MOMTOGRAPHY™ ONLINE required far more technical details. It took two years to really develop her content. Actually creating her content was fairly easy for Beryl. Which her background as a teacher, she had lots of experience breaking down a  complicated concept into its easiest parts. Finding time to put together the course (while holding down a full-time job!) and figuring out which tech tools could best help her execute the class was the hardest part. Not to mention, how in the world would she market the class?? Beryl’s tech tool tips: Scrap together a combination of your favorites. Less is more. Beryl hires a web designer on retainer, so she always has the ability to change up what she needs. Her designer custom built a framework for Beryl’s site. WishList Member is the plugin she uses to deliver passwords to her customers. Password delivery is run through ConvertKit. Beryl says her workflow isn’t super automated. Since her course is live run, she does benefit from a buffer time between cart closing and class start Her very first course simply consisted of password protected pages on her site. She put trust in her students that they would hold the password in confidence. 14:30 - Less Is More Marketing Her very first MOMTOGRAPHY™ ONLINE course ran the month between when her school year ended and her entrepreneurial journey began. The stakes were high! Beryl knew it HAD to work to be able to quit her job. Connection marketing works really well for Beryl. Knowing who your product is meant for, and where you can connect audiences in different ways is key. She ended up connecting with a lot of parenting bloggers. Beryl’s first launch went really well! Her system of connecting herself with the right influencers and people really worked!. She did lots of free classes, webinars, and guest posting to get the word out. 17:37 - Analyzing a Webinar Beryl recently did a webinar for our BBM audience. And while we had a great time, Beryl discovered that business owners aren’t really her focus! Though she delivered a great presentation, the sales just weren’t as strong as they had been before. We both thought the class would be a great fit for you all! But while every mom might have the desire to take great photos of her kids, the time and energy of a business mom isn’t necessarily going to photography.  You ladies are like, “If this won’t built my business, I don’t care!” Not everything will be a huge win! And it’s ok! You have to see what sticks and what doesn’t. We are happy to report that Beryl’s class DID find great success with Facebook ads. (And you ladies KNOW our feelings about Facebook!) 19:35 - Beryl’s Facebook Ad Strategy Beryl’s ads for MOMTOGRAPHY™ ONLINE run to a free 1-week experience. Then, she uses an email sequence to kick off a promotion of her 6-week paid class. Beryl has discovered that marketing to parents is tough! Her live webinar attendance isn’t huge; most students usually watch a recording after. Her launches aren’t built around ‘how many sales can I get live?’ She finds her customers usually need a few days to get all the pieces of the free class, then be reminded to buy the paid course. 22:38 - Beryl’s Newest Business Venture In the last year, she has been asked to teach MOMTOGRAPHY™ ONLINE in many different places. She’s explored creative coaching and mentoring, wanting to blend one-on-one help and teaching. Then she thought, “I bet I have alumni students who’d be willing to teach in their hometowns.” Currently Beryl has 4 online course alums going through a 3-month training program to teach the local, in-person version of the class. These alums hail from California, Ohio, Florida, and Oklahoma. MOMTOGRAPHY™ will truly be a nation-wide business. Isn’t that just brilliant!? Beryl truly has played to her strengths, turned that into a product, and is serving her customers. 26:45 - Business Training for Licensees Beryl’s new venture is much like a business coaching program that allows other moms to start their own businesses. The 3-month training course focuses on three primary areas: Mindset Methodology Marketing Her students get lots of materials, like PowerPoints, and coaching along the way. They’re licensed for a year, and then pay a fee to relicense every year to stay an official teacher. 29:19 - Photography Tips We couldn't let Beryl go without asking her this important question: what’s the biggest mistake new photographers make? In her opinion, it’s overshooting. She finds that new parents are so invested in photographs, “I have to get this moment!” so they put the camera behind their eyeball, and shoot away, but come home to 1,000s of pics on their hard drives that they’ll never sort through. As a photographer, Beryl remembers that she’s the director of her photos. If she can pause, take a step back, and sink into the moment, she can start to watch and notice more. Then bring the camera up when you sense the right moment coming. Shoot with intention. What is the purpose of the photo you’re about to take? I often get the question of how I manage all my programs. Here's the important key: I didn't start here and you can't compare where I am now to where you are starting today. I have been working on growing my business and learning about growing a membership site for SEVEN years now and it has not always been pretty. There's been a lot of failures and giving up on things that just didn't work out. Running a membership site is not easy. It's not for everyone. But it is for me. I tried and tried to build my membership sites until things finally came into place in 2016 thanks to my incredible membership site mentor, Stu Mclaren. Stu is the founder of Wishlist Member which is a software I have been using in my business and for all of my online courses since I started seven years ago. He's also the creator of the very BEST training program out there on starting and growing a profitable membership site called TRIBE. I'll be sharing more soon about he helped me grow my membership sites dramatically and changed my life in 2016, but today it's all about the real juicy stuff. The stuff that didn't work. Welcome to the Real Fast Results podcast!  Thanks for being here.  The special guest this episode is Robert Plank.  Let's jump right into the show today and see what Robert has to share with us... I am going to share how to go from having an idea for something, to solve some kind of problem, into having a money-making membership site ready to go.  This will be where someone goes to a webpage, sees a bunch of cool stuff, clicks a button, clicks to buy, they pay the money, and they get what they paid for. Membership Sites Bring in Passive Income It's the passive income.  It's great to not have to start at the beginning of every month, or every day, at zero.  It's great to be able to do whatever you want and have a bunch of money that came in automatically.  Then, if you want to do some more of that, if you want to do whatever it takes to grow your business, that is all extra! I honestly believe that whatever everyone listening does, even if it's like a service; for example, maybe you set up websites for local businesses, you should still have a membership site for a couple of reasons.  One is that you could get a lot of extra money for something that you're already doing anyway.  I found that when I sell any kind of information products, and stuff like that, I'll get extra business just from people buying the membership site or buying the product. I used to do a lot of nerdy PHP programming, setting up websites.  Well, it was tough to get new business. However, as soon as I made a couple of courses, just sort of showing what I did, I would get a lot of people who I would go through the funnel. They would buy this course, trying to see how I was going to do it, or maybe they were going to hire someone else to do it, and they would end up hiring me to do it. It's really cool making this thing called a membership site because you're doing it anyway, and you might as well get paid a second time for it.  Also, there may be someone that couldn't afford to hire you for $2,000.  You might have lost that person for $0 otherwise, but this way, you may be able to get $200 off of them instead and everybody wins. How to Set Up Membership Sites - An Overview The first step would be to set up WordPress.  It's free, and it's what most of us marketers use to just be able to click a button and make some content.  So, we set up this thing called WordPress, and we put it on a domain, like a .com domain such as RealFastResults.com.  Once WordPress is set up, the two pieces are the front-end piece and the back-end piece. For the front-end, we have a thing called a landing page or a sales letter.  We use a plug in for that called PaperTemplate.  For the back-end we have the member's area, where someone can log in.  We use WishList Member for that.  The pre-step would be to get a website, get a domain name, and get a host account. Then the real stuff is to set up WordPress, set up your sales letter or landing page as your front-end. Then set up the actual login area, called the back-end. Step 1 - Set Up WordPress The first step is to set up WordPress.  The only way this would be awkward or difficult is if you've never done it before.  If you've done this once or twice, then the process of setting up your membership site will be super-easy.  Even if you're not technical at all, there are all kinds of videos out there on how to do this.  Some people use Fantastico, QuickInstall, or SimpleScripts to help set up their WordPress site. The point is that you have this website, and people listening may be used to like uploading files into a folder or something like that, but you click a special button and you install WordPress. Right out of the box, you'll have this place where you can go and post, basically, online journal entries.  Even that, technically, would kind of get you done.  Technically, we're talking about membership sites, and a membership site, all it has to be is a protected download area.  It doesn't have to be something where someone pays you month after month.  It can literally just be  a little protected area that has a bunch of posts, has your videos, other content, or whatever. From there, you go to C-Panel, and within there, it's either called Fantastico, QuickInstall, or SimpleScripts. From there you simply say, "I want to install a WordPress blog at the top level of my site.  It's RealFastResults.com."  Then, it asks you stuff like, "What's the name of your blog?" and "What do you want your password to be?"  You click it, it's done, and that's how you can start adding content to the website. Step 2 - Set Up the Front-end Next, you make what's called the front-end.  You don't need a plug-in for this, and you don't need a theme for this, but it's better if you do.  Basically, you just need one big, long webpage, and even if you have a page with nothing else but a button to click and buy, that would be better than nothing.  Even if you had no time for anything else, but you said, "Hey, I'm Daniel Hall and I have a great membership site on publishing comic books to Kindle." You could still tell someone, "Go to this webpage, and there's just a button there," but at least they would know to go there and click the button. If you had an extra three minutes, then you could put above the button what the title of the course is.  That would be another step in the right direction. If you had another couple of minutes, you could list, maybe 10 good reasons to buy, or 10 things that people would get out of that course.  Then, if you had another three minutes, you could change the headline to something interesting like, "Who Else Wants to Publish Their Comic Book on Kindle Today and Do It In 3 Clicks".  Now it's kind of coming together where they go to this webpage. What we like to do is have it at the very front door of your site. If your site was RealFastKindelComics.com, they would go there and all there would be on that page to do is see what you have to offer and then either close the browser tab or click and buy.  That would be Step #2, getting that front-end set up.  One thing that I've had a lot of success with is writing the sales letter first, even if it's just a couple of quick bullet points.  I've seen a lot of people get tired of doing things in the wrong order, and that's why I tell people to just have a buy button, because that's Step #1.  Anything else that comes after that is extra. When I see a lot of people who fail, what they mess up on is that they go in and make a lot of content first.  They go in, and they make their logo, and they create their business card, and then they go, "I just spent a month working my tail off, and now I have to write something called a sales letter."  When I like to do is, while I'm still in a fresh state of mind...I'm still excited and stuff, and not tired out yet...Make the sales letter, even if it's just some quick thing.  Then, when it comes time to make the course, it kind of has to live up to the hype of the sales letter. Step 3 - Set Up the Back-end The third step is this thing called the back-end. So, this is where all of the magic happens.  This is where you set up a plug-in called WishList Member.  What that basically does is protect your content.  I can't stress this enough, that a lot of people think in the wrong kind of terms.  They think that a membership site is a monthly thing, where every week you deliver an interview or an article.  I prefer to think of it as is a protected download area.  So, for example, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook would all be membership sites because someone can be a member of that site, right?  I mean, Facebook is free, but it's the same idea; either they can get in or they can't. Some people think that they are going to have a site for free, or even for $10.  What I like to do is create a cool course.  I like to have something that has some meat on it... $200, $300...And that way, there's a couple of pieces to it.  If you're getting $300 a pop, first of all, you can have a nice little affiliate program, you could pay out some nice commissions, then if you only made like $3K, you could still be like, "Okay, I just made $3,000, and I feel like my efforts paid off." I think a lot of people have low confidence.  They think that they have to give it away for free or give it away for $5.  Well, what are you going to teach about for $5?  It's going to be a piece of crap.  It's just going to be some PowerPoints, but if you make it $200 or $300, you're probably going to add is some software and some cool videos. As far as the back-end goes, there are two pieces: The tools that you use and content strategy. Like, how many videos am I going to make, what are they going to say etc. Back-end Tools As far as the tools, since WordPress is already set up, we use WishList Member to protect it.  So, what's cool about that is that if someone goes to that front page, they see what they like about Daniel Hall's course about Kindle comic books, they click the button, and they buy.  After they pay you money, say they pay you $200, they go to a registration form that says, "What's your first and last name?  What's your email address?  What username and password do you want?"  They create that account, and now they can go anytime they want.  If it's five years later, they can still come back to this Kindle comic book course. What's cool about this, from a management point of view, is that if someone comes back five years later and they have forgotten their password and click a link, they can get back in. If they pay you money and they refund, now they're locked out.  So, it's really cool from a management point of view, and then what we'll usually do is pile in some videos. Then, we'll use a cool tool called TablePress.  It is so cool.  Basically, you can make a table or a grid inside of your membership site. Usually, if I'm pressed for time, I'll just put some posts on a page.  It will look like any other blog, and they buy access to this blog. Maybe if we have an extra five or ten minutes, we can make a table or a grid. Say I want to have like three columns across, five rows, and add in some cool little icons.  It's one of those nice to have little goodies, where you can make the inside of your membership site look pretty slick.  Make a dashboard, and just make it point and click.  You can make it the way you want it instead of some videos just kind of tossed in a webpage. I would say that my top tools, as far as WordPress being set up are WishList Member and TablePress to structure the membership site with.  So, those are the tools. Content on Your Membership Site When it comes to recording, it takes a little bit of a mindset shift. I think that a lot of people, when they are doing a course, they think, "Let me see what kind of trivia I could just give to you about Kindle comic books.  Let me show you some Kindle comic books.  Let me show you Photoshop, or you could use this other editor."  People just go off in all of these scattered directions. Usually, when I buy a course, I will look over this kind of stuff because I'm just there for the content.  Usually it starts off with a five-minute intro, and then they'll have like a 20-minute longer thing, and everything after that is about 5 minutes.  It's like they get tired or something, and then it ends up being like 20, 30, 40 videos, and you have to page through every little thing to get what you wanted. It's just this meandering thing taking me into all different directions.  What we like to do is think in copywriting and marketing terms.  We think, "They are going to buy this course on Kindle comic books, so what are they going to actually have built by the end?" It's not just what they have learned, but what actions have they actually taken.  This is how you separate yourself from the cheap Kindle and the cheap Udemy kind of courses.  Now you're actually a $300 course.  By the end, they should have, say one or two Kindle comic books up.  Maybe they have another one in progress, or whatever it is. However, by the end of your course, they should have something set up.  That way, they will buy your next course, they won't refund, and all of that good stuff we all like to have. We think of it in terms of, by the end of this course, they will have all of this stuff, and then I split it up into four milestones.  A milestone, we can call it a module, is like a video, that's usually a screen capture that's like 60 minutes long, maybe 90 minutes at the most.  This is how we avoid having to page through all of these little five minute videos. Then each of these four pieces actually counts for something, and is building on the next, and is in the right order.  Then, at the end of each of these modules, we'll have a little 10-minute assignment.  So, for example, in the Kindle Comic book course, at the end of the first module, maybe they will have their first comic book created but not published. Maybe the second module would be having them publish it.  That makes it really cool in a lot of ways.  A lot of people won't get past that first hour of video, and when you're making the sales letter, you're like, I've got all kinds of promises for you, because I can say, "Tonight you join this course and you'll have your first comic book created using the software," or something like that.  So, instead of making videos with no plan, the way I always do it is think in terms of four milestones, 60-90 minutes, and it's all in video form.  Put it on there, put it in that little TablePress grid, and it's a cool little package for anyone that's looking to get some results fast. Sometimes what I'll do is add in free bonuses for any kind of course that we have.  One piece of the bonus may be some kind of software.  Either built-in software on the membership site, buy rights, or have something made.  So, that's good.  If not, I'll tell them where to go and buy, say, some sort of point and click comic creator and then provide some kind of video training on how to use it.  Then, I'll throw in a checklist of sorts.  So I'll have a list of questions they ask like, what's your Kindle comic book going to be called, how many pages is it going to be, etc.  By just going through and answering those questions, they will have something at the end. A few weeks after the course is done, I'll go back and make what's called "quick-start" videos.  I'll make just a video that's just one hour or so. I'll split that up into five-minute chunks just so that if a person has a short attention span or no time, I'll give them just the bare nuts and bolts.  Sometimes I'll have just a quick little section, where it's like, "Just give me the bare essentials," basically. Getting Traffic to Your Membership Site What you need is traffic.  You need to send some people to that site and get your first member going.  I think that at this point, there are two paths you can take.  One path is, you can keep on adding to the site and making it cool, and I think that's the natural path a lot of people want to go into.  That's because it means you don't have to go into any of the scary stuff.  You don't have to market your stuff or buy ads.  You don't have to send emails, do webinars, get affiliates, and stuff like that. I think that at this point, as soon as you have the minimum viable product, even if the sales page could be better, and even if you haven't quite figured out TablePress, what's important at this point is to get one single, paying member.  I think some people get kind of discouraged because they think, "Oh man, I see all of these people talking about having a $100,000 launch.  On the first day, I guess I'll be okay with like $50,000."  Then, they put out their site and they just get one sale.  I'm thinking that's great because before you had $0.  Yeah, you may have put in 10 or 20 hours, but don't cut it up and say that you only made $10 an hour.  You made your first member, and then the next thing you know, member #2, #3, #4 are going to come in with almost no work at all. Going down the line, I think that there are some cool things that anyone could add to a site.  For example, what we do a lot of times, is we have a plug-in called WP Notepad, and we have it to where, underneath every video, or every post, there's like a little note-taking area where any of your members can go in and type their own private notes that are stored on your server.  So, they don't have to save it anywhere.  You could add a checklist under each post so that they can check off if they've watched that video or gone to that webpage. We have a way where you can add a pop-up using a program called WP Kunaki, where it will confirm their physical shipping address.  So, you can send them a quick "Thank You" card or call them on the phone as soon as they join.  That way you can say, "Thanks for your purchase.  I just wanted to make sure that you made it to the download page."  You could also send them a DVD, or whatever.  Those are all nice things to have, and those are good to add maybe like in a week or two. The next one or two weeks should be dedicated to getting some dang members in there. You need traffic, and you need a compelling offer, but how do you do that?  One of the ways you could do so is essentially by making allies with someone that has a list and has a community that would benefit in some way from your membership site.  You could include that person in the resources section, or you could reach out to that person and maybe do an interview with them, or a bonus of some sort that you could include within your membership site.  You could even include a link back to their site to go download whatever the bonus is. This is a way that you could go about making an ally of a mover and shaker in your niche that has a vested interest in seeing you succeed because the more you succeed, the more eyeballs they could potentially have on their stuff since it's in the member's area.  This also gives you the opportunity to seed your members area with good content.  The content does have to be A+ for this to work well, but you can share the spotlight with other experts, essentially, who now have a vested interest in seeing you actually succeed and the site succeeds.  Again, the more you succeed, the more successful they will be, potentially, and they will see some benefit from that as well. We work with people who are outside of internet marketing.  They have a list, and usually it's like on YouTube or Facebook, but they don't even know what they have. Some of these guys are playing around on Facebook, and they'll post some like random link and get 100 likes.  We're just like, "Dude, you need to figure out what kind of problem people have, get an idea for a course, record some videos, and put it in a membership site.  Then, post it and start making some money."  Yeah, it's crazy how some of these people, especially outside of internet marketing, they have a list and don't even know what they have.  It's like, "If you spent a couple of days on this, you'd have tens of thousands of dollars without even trying." Learn From Robert The best way is to buy our membership course at MembershipCube.  If you're not quite ready for that, I have a blog at RobertPlank.com, where I talk about a lot of this stuff.  It doesn't have to be that complicated.  I know that it's really easy to let the inner voice of "low-confidence" kind of trick you into thinking you have to keep on building stuff  before it's ready to go.  You can have the best of both worlds.  You can make a really simple membership site, just come up with a really simple idea.  Then, you create your modules and create some little bonuses, put it out there, and get some more sales.  After that, you can go back and innovate again and again. Every batch of sales that you get, you can go back and say, "Now my reward, after doing the scary marketing stuff, is to make some of those five minute videos," or "My reward is now to reach out and get some guest interviews to create some membership site content."  I think that there's something to be said about just figuring out what problem you're solving.  That way, it's impossible to not create the content, and this way you're trying to cover every little nook and cranny. You're not trying to be the encyclopedia of Kindle comic books, for example.  You're just saying, "The goal is to have a dang Kindle comic book done, so anything else that I say that gets too off topic or too long-winded, that's a step in the wrong direction.  All that matters is, here's the software to make it, ignore most of this, click these buttons, and boom, you have a Kindle comic.  Now you have your results." If you want to add any extra bonus in, that's great, but I think a lot of people have it backwards when it comes to what to include as bonuses.  They think that someone's just going to buy a course where they offer to give some Kindle advice, like, "Ask me anything that you want to about Kindle."  Well, how the heck are you going to sell that.  People are going to think, "I don't know what to ask, why don't you just tell me about Kindle?" There's something to say about just keeping it simple, getting it in place, and then go back and inch up everything.  So, just get it set up. I'm going to get really personal today and talk about times I've screwed up... Marketer of the week: Stu McLaren from stu.me and Wishlist Member. Rather than share a "breakthrough" I picked up from Stu, I want to tell you that when I present (a webinar or podcast), I imitate his speaking style. When you speak, speak deliberately! Especially if you're an American and your natural tendency is to slur your words like I do. Is there anyone in your life who speaks slowly and carefully, without becoming monotone? Then I would suggest you imitate that person's speaking style when you present. (That's us a few years ago at Inc. Magazine headquarters at 7 World Trade Center in New York City.) I often "channel" Stu to slow down my speaking, enunciate, and speak more clearly, focus, calm. You can be intense but still make sense. See also: Ray Edwards, Armand Morin. Fourteen Key Principles: The Common Thread That Runs Through These Successes & Failures Four Daily Tasks: I said it before and I'll say it again... Finishing everything that I start, less notebook doodling $997, $47 every 2 weeks, 5 payment option, experimenting! Charging high ticket AND low ticket. Investing in myself: attend conferences instead of stock trading which is gambling and a distraction. Dave Ramsey instead of Jim Cramer. I don't trust myself: get to the Minimum Viable Product because of the 3 day window. I'm not smart: I don't know what's going to sell without experimenting and I'm open to new ideas. Weekly focus: email for the same thing all week. Stick to your guns, don't psych yourself out or let customers bully you Membership sites: organize both high and low ticket, group multiple sites (but no all-in-one site) Pitch webinars: do something unexpected, teach a lot and sell hard. Give them a wow moment and not necessarily an aha moment. Re-marketing: phase out what's not selling and go back in future weeks to promote what's selling (Backup Creator) Don't delete old sites or content Your most popular content, marketing and products are the "beginner" stuff It's ok to repeat your most "powerful" ideas and phrases. How many times have I mentioned Income Machine in podcasts and blog posts? A lot! Don't be a timid marketer. Welcome pitch emails, upsells, ads. Don't have a buyers only email list or a monthly digest email list. Be on the lookout for what you can absorb/apply, for example, an affiliate bonus package. Three Biggest Failures ClickSensor: should have made it an online service WPLetter (now Paper Template): should have built it out more and controlled the market faster (16k overnight from a 12 minute video) Action PopUp: should have got the entire marketplace using it, added tons of templates Bonus: all the PHP products, which made money, but not enough. Lesson: keep publishing things to get to "the good stuff." Three Biggest Successes Bulk content creation: books, Daily Seminar, Webinar Crusher monthly, blog, podcast. Just make 12 pieces of content to last you an entire year. Must-have tool for everyone's business such as Backup Creator: pitch is all about what you can do with it, 100k sites, tie in with our other stuff (Membership Cube) -- yearly renewals, developer license Pain of disconnect in Membership Cube: selling high ticket, playing with the payment plans, pitching on webinars! (35k in a couple hours) Bonus: platinum coaching program. Lesson: the first step is getting the button online! Wise Words to Live By When you can't change the direction of the wind, adjust your sails. If you don't change the direction you're going, then you're likely end up where you're heading. Albert Einstein: "Try not to become a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value." Napoleon Hill: "Keep your eyes and ears wide open--and your mouth CLOSED, if you wish to acquire the habit of prompt DECISION. Those who talk too much do little else. I receive a variable commission for all purchases made using those links.)   I have recently received questions from listeners looking to launch a podcast in 2016. I thought this would be a good time to review the tools I use to in my business. This includes the tools I use to create my podcast, website and newsletter. We will also review the resources I use to learn, grow and develop.   This episode is an encore presentation of an earlier episode you may have missed. If you did catch it last time, let this serve as inspiration and a little refresher.   I have been using most of these resources for at least 24 months. Some have been used longer. A couple tools are more recent. For the most part, I have been a long-time user and have been quite happy with each of them. That is why I feel confident recommending them to you. You can find affiliate links to most of these online at PodcastTalentCoach.com.   COACHING RESOURCE This list doesn't include much technical information, such as mixers, processors and software. I leave that to Dave Jackson at the School of Podcasting. He is the tech expert that helps me. If you are looking for help setting up the studio, Dave is your guy. He leads off my resources.   TECHNICAL TOOLS A few technical tools from my studio include my mic, my mac and a few web tools.   My studio mic is an ElectroVoice RE20. This runs about $450. It is a high quality mic. This mic is probably much more than a beginning podcaster needs. However, if you are serious about podcasting, this is a great mic.   My backup mic is a Audio-Technica ATR-2100. It is a quality USB mic for the money. This costs around $60.   For editing, I use Adobe Audition in the studio. I will occasionally use Garage Band for quick projects or when I'm traveling.   I use a Mac Book Pro 13” for the flexibility. I cost me $1,200.   My mp3s are tagged with ID3 Editor from PA Software. The price tag was $15.   I host my audio with Libsyn. It runs $20/month.   My URLs were purchased through GoDaddy. The price really depends on the URL. You can usually find a deal. After the initial deal, I pay about $45/year.   I have a website on Homestead and one on Host Gator with Wordpress. Homestead is a stand alone site builder. Host Gator just hosts my Wordpress site. Homestead is $20/month. HostGator is $135/year, just over $11/month. Wordpress is free.   On my website, I use Paypal for my transactions. Most of my providers accept it. Plus, they have a card option for my customers.   I use Aweber for my newsletter. It is $196/year. Just over $16/month. I looked at Mail Chimp. Both are very similar services if you have a list under 5,000.   Canva.com is a decent resource for creating graphics. They have a decent photo library as well. Most photos are about $1/photo.   I self-published my workbook through Create Space, an Amazon company. You simply upload a .pdf. It is fairly simple to use. Not very expensive. They also sell the workbook through Amazon and converted it to Kindle.   I am in the process of creating a membership portal through WishList Member. $297. They have solid training videos. I am not yet complete with this one.   LEARNING TOOLS Dan Miller and 48Days.com is where it all started. He has great tools to help you find your passion and the work you love.   Internet Business Mastery is a great podcast and course that have helped me refine my business focus. Jeremy & Jason have been there and done it.   Michael Hyatt has a great membership site with Platform University. It is based on his book Platform, which is a must read as you develop your podcast. There is great learning inside the community. He only opens membership a couple times a year for enrollment. I got in early on this one and haven't looked back since.   Audible.com has turned my car into a mobile classroom. I am usually listening to a couple books a month on top of the podcasts. You can get a free book when you use my affiliate link on the resources page.   Most of all, I cannot say enough about Dave Jackson and the School of Podcasting. An online web-based digital membership site... you have a web page (a sales letter) where you offer to solve a simple problem: play guitar, reduce man-boobs, get your ex back. People click a button to buy the solution (a set of videos that play directly in their web browser) and they're taken to a member's area where they watch videos solving their problem. A membership site: you need it to handle downloads whether you're running a single payment site ($10 one time, and yes, membership sites DON'T have to be recurring)... Fixed term site (X number of payments) or forever-continuity (i.e. $37/month)... And I don't want to tell you about how tough membership sites were during the "dark ages": your choices were either a $4000 piece of crap software that was old (even then) and didn't work right, or $400 per site and it literally took at least a week to connect the membership piece to WordPress, PayPal, and your email autoresponder... Guess what? You need to have a membership site It needs to run in WordPress (so you can use your favorite themes and plugins with it, and it's setup in just a few minutes) You need to host it yourself (hosted services that "do it for you" always end up lacking in what you want and a huge chunk of our coaching clients deal with people who want to migrate OFF those hosted membership platforms) You need to get that membership site setup as FAST as possible and get your FIRST paying member as FAST as possible (even if it's just $10 one time) The things that have always made money like having a sales letter and building a list STILL make money! Can I tell you what made a huge difference when it came to setting up membership sites? It's This: Your Membership Site Is Made Up Of "Levels" Let me explain... NOT the way "they" explain it... they tell you to "setup levels for Silver, Gold, and Platinum." Or, "setup a level for your beginner golfing course with 24 lessons and then another level for your advanced golfing course"... that doesn't help anybody! This makes more sense to me: sell access to your $100 (one-time) course on How to Buy and Flip a House. Create a single "page" in WordPress (it's ok if you don't know what that means yet) and pile your videos in there (I recommend four modules of 60-90 minutes each to get people to each milestone when it comes to buying and flipping a house. Create the content (videos) for that site, put it in a membership site, create a 1-page "sales letter" listing a simple headline and 10 reasons people would want to grab your house compared to the alternatives. Add a PayPal button (a way to take payments online). You're done at that point... You can always add or change things later, like increasing the price from $100 to $497 to $1997 or add a second button next to it to give people the option for a payment plan. THEN the next "course" or "page" or "level" (if you create one) would be called How to Buy and Rent a House. Not Advanced House Flipping, or House Flipping Volume 2. You find another NEED or PROBLEM people have and you solve that. No one cares about your 400 hours of video... No one cares about tips, tricks, interviews, tidbits -- get me from Point A to Point D and that's all you have to do. Just take PayPal payments for now, don't worry about fancy stuff like an affiliate program (Clickbank) or taking credit card payments over the phone (Stripe)... the grass is always greener on the other side and what's more important is that you have SOMETHING rocking and rolling... just get to that one sale... Don't worry about drip content (as the membership site owner, you're the only one that really cares about that) -- although we include our WP Drip plugin (we've been using it for over 6 years now) inside our Membership Cube course which also includes Wishlist Member. Don't worry about organizing your content into a fancy "dashboard" just yet -- it's actually much easier to create the content (videos) first,

Four life lessons that Russell learned this week, that you can implement to, hopefully, make your life a little bit better. ---Transcript--- Hey, everybody. This is Russell Brunson and I am doing a special Marketing in Your Car from inside the Mommy Mobile. Yes, I am inside my wife's car and I am ready to do a great podcast. I have no idea what direction we are going to go today on this podcast. Usually I have a theme I want to think about, but I have a lot of cool stuff happening and I am excited, so I am going to just start rambling. Hopefully something cool will come out of it and you will get some value out of it. First, right now I am on day seven of my modified juice fast and I feel amazing. I want to talk about this because I think I just stumbled on something new. I am not sure if it is totally healthy and I may very well die in the near future from it, but I think it is awesome. This is what I am doing. When I walk up in the morning I do my Bullet-proof hot chocolate which is the Mormon version of Bullet-proof coffee. It consists of chocolate, organic grass-fed Kerrygold butter, MCT oil, cocoa powder, and some Stevia. I blend it up and that is my breakfast in the morning. When I do this, I am not hungry and I feel pretty good the rest of the day. It is pretty awesome. The second step is that I have been juicing and I was making a gallon of juice per day. This was fun, but all my juices kind of taste nasty because I just juice everything I can find in one huge gallon jug. I carry it around all day and keep drinking it. I don't mind it, but it is kind of gross, so I went to a place called Tree City here in Boise. They have this juice cleanse. Every day I go in the morning and they have six juices for me to drink throughout the day, so I have been drinking those. At night, just because everyone else is eating and I feel guilty (I don't feel guilty, actually; I just get hungry) I usually eat some eggs. I don't eat carbs, but just eggs. I have done this now for almost a week and I feel awesome. I am not as tired; I have energy; I am not craving food. Well, I am not going to lie. When I do crave something in the middle of the day, I have been eating Quest Nutrition Bars. From a nutritional standpoint, they are the best protein bar you can get in the world. From a taste standpoint, it is like eating candy. I could live on Quest bars alone. You can go to their Web site, QuestNutrition.com, and look for the cookies and cream one. Man! It is like eating Oreo cookies, but a thousand times better. They are all super high protein and very low carbs. This is what I have been doing. Second, I am actually driving right now to Jiu Jitsu. This week has been so slammed and so crazy. Typically, when I am this busy I cancel my Jiu Jitsu. Today my wife said, “You really should just cancel it.” I said, “You know what? No! This is the thing I look forward to.” This is the reward at the end of the tunnel for me. It is going to beat up dudes. I don't know why, but it is so appealing to me. This is what I want to do. So many times we cut out the part of our life that brings us a lot of happiness because of work and other things. I was thinking about this in the case of many of us. Everyone has the things they like to do, right? Many times life gets in the way of those things. We need to make it more of a priority and say, “Look, this is what I do.” For me right now it is Jiu Jitsu. Twice a week I want to do it, I am going to do it, and everything else has to fall to the side because I am going to do it; that is, outside of my family. With work, many times it fills the space you give it. If you have eight hours a day, it will fill eight hours. If you have 20 hours a day, it will fill 20 hours. Anyway, make sure you tie in those things you really want to do. The reason we became entrepreneurs is that we wanted to do a bunch of stuff. We wanted more time, more money, more freedom, or more whatever. However, we then shackle ourselves down with our businesses to the point where because of our business we cannot do the stuff we want to do. It is kind of interesting. There is another life lesson for today. What else? Oh, the next thing is ClickFunnels. We are almost done with our initial beta. I cannot tell you how excited I am. I literally built an entire membership site last night in 20 minutes from start to finish to everything. It used to take a ton of time. There is one limitation: You can only do a membership site the way we have it. If you want a fancy membership sites with a lot of other stuff, you have to use WishList Member (that's a plug for Stu, my man!). However, if you want a basic membership site, man! In 20 minutes, start to finish, I had a membership site that I could start selling. We were going through sales funnels that fast, automated Webinars; I am going through and creating all of these right now. Even if I never sold a single license to ClickFunnels, it will change my business forever. Now we can sell it and share it with everybody else in the world which is very, very exciting. It is going to be awesome. We also just hired a full-time accountant which is a crazy thing. She has been coming in. This is the first time in my business where I have had someone do tons of in depth, not analytics, but almost like an autopsy. It is like doing an autopsy of our books, digging deep and trying to figure out everything. Where is the money coming from? Where is it going? Which of our offers are profitable? Which are not profitable? Right now everything we do kind of gets lumped together, so at the end of the month we are thinking, “Yeah! We are profitable!” I have been learning one thing from my favorite show The Profit. Today, by the way, is the season finale. It is interesting because he goes into companies and tries to find where the profit is on each of the things they are selling. He gets rid of all the low-profit stuff and tries to sell more of the high-profit stuff. Last night's episode they were in a pie company. This pie company had an 80% margin on their key lime pie and they had a 10% profit margin on everything else. However, everything else took up 90% of the store. He got rid of all of it and transformed the store to 100% key lime pie and nothing else. Boom! All of a sudden it became profitable. It was interesting like that. One of my big takeaways is looking at all of my funnels. We have a lot of them. Our support has to be in all of them and there are things happening and costs associated with each of them.   Which ones are actually making us money and which ones are not? We are trying to identify this, to drill down, and to figure out which products are profitable and which ones are not? We are also looking at advertising sources. We used to group everything like, “Here are solo ads; here is Facebook; here is whatever.” We are digging deeper to figure out everything about our business. We have always been pretty good at numbers, but now we are getting very, very good, stripping out everything that is not profitable and focusing on the good stuff. It is sad. We are shutting down Web sites, funnels, and pages that I love, but they are not making money or they are costing too much in time, energy, support, and headaches. It does not make a lot of sense. Anyway, I am at Jiu Jitsu now. I am going to go in here. The dude I am going to roll with is way tougher than I am. I am going to try to beat him up today. That is my goal. My goal, actually, is to not get tapped out today from him. He is a stud, but it should be pretty fun. Hopefully out of this you got something. From a taste standpoint, it is like eating candy. I could live on Quest bars alone. You can go to their Web site, QuestNutrition.com, and look for the cookies and cream one. Man! It is like eating Oreo cookies, but a thousand times better. They are all super high protein and very low carbs. This is what I have been doing. Second, I am actually driving right now to Jiu Jitsu. This week has been so slammed and so crazy. Typically, when I am this busy I cancel my Jiu Jitsu. Today my wife said, “You really should just cancel it.” I said, “You know what? No! This is the thing I look forward to.” This is the reward at the end of the tunnel for me. It is going to beat up dudes. I don’t know why, but it is so appealing to me. This is what I want to do. So many times we cut out the part of our life that brings us a lot of happiness because of work and other things. I was thinking about this in the case of many of us. Everyone has the things they like to do, right? Many times life gets in the way of those things. We need to make it more of a priority and say, “Look, this is what I do.” For me right now it is Jiu Jitsu. Twice a week I want to do it, I am going to do it, and everything else has to fall to the side because I am going to do it; that is, outside of my family. With work, many times it fills the space you give it. If you have eight hours a day, it will fill eight hours. If you have 20 hours a day, it will fill 20 hours. Anyway, make sure you tie in those things you really want to do. The reason we became entrepreneurs is that we wanted to do a bunch of stuff. We wanted more time, more money, more freedom, or more whatever. However, we then shackle ourselves down with our businesses to the point where because of our business we cannot do the stuff we want to do. It is kind of interesting. There is another life lesson for today. What else? Oh, the next thing is ClickFunnels. We are almost done with our initial beta. I cannot tell you how excited I am. I literally built an entire membership site last night in 20 minutes from start to finish to everything. It used to take a ton of time. There is one limitation: You can only do a membership site the way we have it. If you want a fancy membership sites with a lot of other stuff, you have to use WishList Member (that’s a plug for Stu, my man!). However, if you want a basic membership site, man! In 20 minutes, start to finish, I had a membership site that I could start selling. We were going through sales funnels that fast, automated Webinars; I am going through and creating all of these right now. Even if I never sold a single license to ClickFunnels, it will change my business forever. Now we can sell it and share it with everybody else in the world which is very, very exciting. It is going to be awesome. We also just hired a full-time accountant which is a crazy thing. She has been coming in. This is the first time in my business where I have had someone do tons of in depth, not analytics, but almost like an autopsy. It is like doing an autopsy of our books, digging deep and trying to figure out everything. Where is the money coming from? Where is it going? Which of our offers are profitable? Which are not profitable? Right now everything we do kind of gets lumped together, so at the end of the month we are thinking, “Yeah! We are profitable!” I have been learning one thing from my favorite show The Profit. Today, by the way, is the season finale. It is interesting because he goes into companies and tries to find where the profit is on each of the things they are selling. He gets rid of all the low-profit stuff and tries to sell more of the high-profit stuff. Last night’s episode they were in a pie company. This pie company had an 80% margin on their key lime pie and they had a 10% profit margin on everything else. However, everything else took up 90% of the store. He got rid of all of it and transformed the store to 100% key lime pie and nothing else. Boom! All of a sudden it became profitable. It was interesting like that. One of my big takeaways is looking at all of my funnels. We have a lot of them. Our support has to be in all of them and there are things happening and costs associated with each of them.   Which ones are actually making us money and which ones are not? We are trying to identify this, to drill down, and to figure out which products are profitable and which ones are not? We are also looking at advertising sources. We used to group everything like, “Here are solo ads; here is Facebook; here is whatever.” We are digging deeper to figure out everything about our business. We have always been pretty good at numbers, but now we are getting very, very good, stripping out everything that is not profitable and focusing on the good stuff. It is sad. We are shutting down Web sites, funnels, and pages that I love, but they are not making money or they are costing too much in time, energy, support, and headaches. It does not make a lot of sense. Anyway, I am at Jiu Jitsu now. I am going to go in here. The dude I am going to roll with is way tougher than I am. I am going to try to beat him up today. That is my goal. My goal, actually, is to not get tapped out today from him. He is a stud, but it should be pretty fun. Hopefully out of this you got something.
