This week I’m excited to introduce one of the hottest side hustles of the moment, and that is low-content self-publishing. What is low-content publishing? Let me explain -- self-publishing has been around for a decade, and we’ve covered that quite a bit in both fiction and non-fiction -- it’s one of my favorite and perhaps most passive side hustles. Write the book, hit publish, collect royalties for years. Cool, right? Well, it’s the whole write the book part where a lot of people get stuck. You might not know what to write about, and even if you do, it can be really time-consuming, and at the end of the day, it still might turn out to not be a huge seller on Amazon. What low-content publishing aims to accomplish is to accelerate your product creation by focusing on a very specific sub-set of books: journals diaries planners notebooks sketchbooks and more With these types of books, the value doesn’t come from your years of experience and a 35,000-word brain dump. Instead it comes from how you’ve structured the mostly-blank internal pages and prompts, and who you’re targeting as your customer. With Amazon’s print-on-demand KDP print service, you can upload these products as digital files, hold no physical inventory, and collect passive royalties whenever they sell. But there’s an art and a science to it, and that’s why I’ve assembled a panel of experts in today’s show. I’m joined by three experts in the low-content publishing space with more than 1,000 titles between them: Rob Cubbon from RobCubbon.com - Long-time listeners might remember Rob from episode 81, back in 2014. Rob’s been in the low-content game for the last year or so and in that time has published over 1,000 titles. Flav Maderios from SideBusinessLaunch.com - Flav was a guest on episode 300 of The Side Hustle Show last summer, where we were talking about his merch business. Since then he’s expanded to the self-publishing space with around 300 titles so far. Rachel Harrison-Sund from RachelHarrisonSund.com - Rachel built her low content business to 6-figures a year on a very part-time basis. But as you’ll hear in this episode, there’s some seasonality that comes into play, there are some competitive factors that come into play, and there’s a little bit of a gold rush feel to all of this. Tune in to hear how these low content publishers go about their product research (so they don’t waste their time), how they price and market their books to maximize sales and royalties, and how they manage such wide-ranging portfolios. Rob Cubbon is an entrepreneur living the good life. After creating multiple income streams for himself he moved from London to Chiang Mai, Thailand. He moved to greener pastures where he lives a stress-free life while making money online. Rob scaled his KDP account to where he is making well over $1000 per month with low and no-content books. He also does a little Merch by Amazon. While his numbers might not be mind-blowing in the sense that over six-figures per year he's living in a place where the cost of living is ridiculously low. Rob has a course on how you can build and scale your KDP account. He is offering the listeners of the Merch Minds Podcast a generous offer of $49 for his Selling Notebooks & Low Content Paperback Books On Amazon course. Online Course Coaching | For Online Course Creators, Trainers and Entrepreneurs
In this episode, Phil Ebiner joins me to talk about how he successfully promotes his online courses on Udemy, Teachable and similar platforms. Phil currently earns between $15,000 and $20,000 a month in course sales so it's fair to say his methods are proven. While Phil still spends around 40 hours per week maintaining and growing his business, he's doing what he loves. And when you're doing what you love it doesn't feel like 'work'. The other thing is Phil's income will continue to grow even if he decides to take an extended holiday. When it comes to passive income, you work your business on your terms. How to Promote Your Udemy CoursesWhen you promote your Udemy courses using your own coupon codes you retain 97% of the sale price whereas your share in organic sales is only 50%. So it's highly advisable to use your own coupon code when sending prospective students to your Udemy course sales page.As you are no doubt aware, Udemy does a lot of discounting and while Phil does advise that you take part in Udemy's promotions, using your own coupon code links definitely gives you more control over the pricing of your course. You should also be promoting your online courses at a little higher price point. When Phil first releases a course he starts the promotion at the $29 mark. Many instructors send out promotional announcements offering courses between $2 and $7, and while this strategy may work for instructors with a large student base it does not make a great strategy for someone just starting out. Also offering your courses at huge discount trains your students to expect super low prices. So when you are doing your own promotions keep it at a price that you're comfortable selling at.Another strategy that lends itself to promotion is to create more courses. This way you can cross-promote related courses and get more sales.Phil strongly recommends that you take advantage of your two promotional announcements each month.Another great strategy when releasing a new course and even promoting your existing courses is offering a tiered pricing structure. The price is limited in the number of coupons and expiry date. This creates urgency. For example, you can say there are 50 coupons at $27, 50 coupons at $37, 50 coupons at $47 etc. and they expire in a week or so.Another thing to consider when pricing your courses is to end in a 7. Studies have shown that product pricing ending in a 7 sells better than those ending in a 9.How to Promote Self Hosted Courses i.e. TeachablePhil has now loaded all his Udemy courses into Teachable which is linked to his self-hosted website at videoschoolonline.com. There is a 'Courses' button on his site and links in his blog posts point to the courses hosted on Teachable.Phil gets a lot of organic traffic to his Teachable courses through his YouTube channel and blog posts. The best part is he is getting full price sales as unlike Udemy, people landing on is site from organic sources are willing to pay what his courses are really worth.Phil's promotion strategy when it comes to his own site and Teachable courses is to use content marketing, blog posts on specific topics that he teaches and YouTube videos. When it comes to YouTube, Phil has over 200 videos on his channel. He doesn't only post videos to promote his courses, he posts a lot of free, valuable information as well. This has helped him build a following and trust with his viewers. One really cool thing about Teachable is that you can bundle courses, so Phil has grouped all his related courses into various bundles and offered them at discounted prices.Teachable also allows for monthly subscriptions and Phil has set up one of his bundles on a $9 monthly subscription. You will find a link in the resources section below. How to Double Your Promotion Through Co-Creating Courses. When you create courses with other instructors you are exposed to their audience which can greatly extend your reach and increase your sales. You must be selective when looking for instructors to co-create courses with to ensure there is a fit and they are not simply trying to tap into your student base. However, when both instructors are on the same page and both of you are promoting to your individual student bases then substantial growth can be achieved.Closing ThoughtsOne of Phil's biggest strategies is to create and promote free courses on his self-hosted Teachable site. This allows him to gather email addresses and a funnel into his paid courses.Resources and LinksTo find out more about Phil and his courses please visithttp://videoschoolonline.comhttp://philebiner.comClick here for Phil's free mini course on How to Win at Teaching Online Courses in 2016Check out Phil's Passive Income course bundle at only $9 per month. Here is the link to Rob Cubbon's Facebook Retargeting video that Phil mentioned during the interview.
I just don’t have the time If you find yourself complaining you don’t have time to do what want because you’re too busy, here’s 12 suggestions of how to free up your time and energy. They come from our guest on episode 72 of the Changeability Podcast, Rob Cubbon, who shares interesting insights into the drains on our time and energy that sap us of the will to achieve what we want in life. If you recognise the name it’s because we talked with best-selling author Rob Cubbon in episode 58 about his book: ‘Free your thoughts: How I re-programmed myself for happiness and how you can too.’ We realised there was one aspect of the book that deserved wider coverage, so invited Rob back to discuss his advice on how to free up your time and energy. The rationale If you spend your time involved in negativity, you’re not using that energy and time for more positive pursuits. Look at your habits, would you have more time and energy if you did without them. What are these activities and habits we’d be better off without? How to free up your time and energy Don’t watch the news – The news has the potential to affect your beliefs and colour your views. It can make you feel stressed and doesn’t on the whole galvanise you into action. Don’t buy or read newspapers and avoid the websites of newspaper or media companies – Newspapers and media companies perpetuate myths and prejudices, especially about other countries and religions. Furthermore, we tend to buy those that reflect our existing views of the world around us. Don’t watch TV – It’s a potentially huge drain on your time. Be aware of the, time you spend in front of the TV rather than just switching it on for the sake of it, or having it on in the background. If you particularly enjoy watching television, try being more conscious of the programmes you watch. Another strategy is to use a favourite programme as a reward when you have finished an activity. We live in an age where you can watch programmes when you want, so be selective in your viewing. Don’t compare yourself to others - All comparisons between yourself and others, in terms of success or indeed other criteria, is futile and a waste of time. You are not that other person; you are your own individual self. Your ultimate success is dependent on you and your endeavours, so compare yourself only to yourself and measure your own improvement over time. Ditch your friends – Well don’t ditch them all, but consider seeing less of those who are a negative influence on your life, sap your energy or hold you back. Travel can broaden your experience of others as can being part of a mastermind group, which brings you into contact with those who enrich rather than rob you of energy. Don’t blame anyone or anything – Blame is rarely going to do you good, it’s a negative emotion whether blaming yourself or someone else. You can benefit from finding out what went wrong and why in a situation, so it won’t happen again, but blame itself serves little or no purpose. Don’t worry or anticipate that more bad things are going to happen – Accept that things will happen to you but don’t focus on them. Because your focus will be on fear, and the anticipation of pain or worrying will stop you doing the things you want to in life. And so often the pain is never as you anticipate, so in this sense it’s an exercise in futility. Ape the characteristics of those who are happy and successful – If you see yourself being petty and judgemental, imagine the persona of who you are trying to become. Ask yourself if the trait you’re exhibiting at this present moment is conducive with that persona. If not, look to and mimic those that do exhibit the traits you see as admirable. Don’t complain – Complaining increases the stress on you and doesn’t free up your time or energy. It is sapping. Find a more positive language to describe what’s going on, rather than complaining. This in turn helps lift your thinking on a subject. Talk in terms of a solution rather than a problem. Don’t identify with abstract concepts – Avoid identifying yourself by concepts such as your religion, politics, or affinity with certain groups (like a football team). You are aligning yourself with something, which is not you and can ultimately be a cause of unhappiness. By aligning yourself with one group, you are in effect misaligning yourself from another group. Stop beating yourself up – Do what you can and stop beating yourself up about what you haven’t or should have done. Don’t take Rob’s advice – Rob’s final words offer an interesting perspective. His tenets sound prescriptive but ultimately are just suggestions to save your time and energy. A final thought We’re not saying you have to do any or all of the above, but suggest that these are potential drains to our time and energy. Of course ultimately it’s for each of us to decide what we want to do with our lives. But maybe, when you catch yourself complaining about not having the time or energy to do something you’d like to, this list will serve as a reminder of where to look first to free your greatest assets - time and energy. Episode 72 of The Changeability Podcast Hear Rob and us discuss how to free up your time and energy on this week’s episode of the Changeability Podcast, as Rob joins us from a shared working space somewhere in the world. If you’d like to find out more about Rob and what he’s done to change his life and work, you’ll find him at www.RobCubbon.com Resources mentioned on the show Gretchen Reuben – The Happiness Project Rob’s book - Free your thoughts: How I re-programmed myself for happiness and how you can too. What’s next? Which of the suggestions do you agree with? Which don’t you agree with? How do you free up your time and energy? Do you practice any of these suggestions yourself and why? Online Course Coaching | For Online Course Creators, Trainers and Entrepreneurs
Online education comes in many forms from Blogs to EBooks to online video courses. By incorporating a number of these options you can build a large list and funnel prospective students into your premium online courses.Rob Cubbon started Blogging on the subject of graphic design in 2006 which led to clients contacting him about contract work, ultimately allowing Rob to leave his job.By providing valuable information and helping people through his Blog, Rob's business morphed into an online education business and he soon found himself creating and selling online video courses and books.Rob's advice to someone just starting out in the online education industry is to create some free content that's really good, about something you love to do. You could start on YouTube, create a Blog, record a Podcast or even host a Blab. This is how you start to build an audience and start to discover what people want to know more about. The opposite side of the coin is simply put out a course on Udemy that doesn't sell. It is far easier to sell courses on Udemy once you have an audience that knows, likes and trusts you.It is also important that you post your good quality content consistently. Post something every day or once a week at least.Putting up free content is also a fantastic market research tool. You can quickly identify what people are and are not interested in. It is very important to listen to your audience and cater to their needs. Now you may ask, “Where do I get my content from? What am I going to write about every day or once a week?”.Rob recommends creating content from your immediate environment, from your expertise. Only create content about topics that you know about. You don't have to be an expert. In fact, studies show that people would sooner learn from someone who is on the same path as them. Sharing experiences and insights while they are still fresh versus some PhD boffin preaching a bunch of theory. It is important that you make your content your own and not just rehash a market leader's material.Another important point Rob raises is you have to start with the content. The marketing comes later.Use your Blog or chosen information channel to start collecting email addresses straight away. Don't wait with this step, the sooner you start getting names and emails the better. You won't see the benefit of collecting email addresses initially and you may consider it a cost. However, if you plan to stay in your niche for a couple of years or more it will definitely pay dividends. The other important point is, don't leave your subscribers hanging. Definitely don't spam them but also don't leave it for months before sending out a message. They could very well have forgotten about you and unsubscribe from your list. Sending them a message once in a while informing them about your latest Blog post or YouTube video is a great way to stay in contact while delivering value.Having a list is a great market research tool. You can ask your list what their biggest problem is in relation to your topic or even poll for questions they'd like answered in your upcoming course.Another great way Rob builds his list is meeting people in person. Going to conferences, meetups etc. and connecting with like minded people is a way to connect on a whole different level.Re-purposing Your ContentOnce you have an idea of what your audience wants to know about and have provided a good amount of free content you can now take that content and work it into a paid information product, whether that be an EBook or an online video course.A great strategy is to create a Kindle book version of your video course and get it out on Amazon. In your book you include a link back to your online course. Whether you offer a discount to your readers or not is totally up to you.If you place your link and offer in the first 10% of the book, then people previewing your content will see the link and may even go and purchase your course without even purchasing your book. You should look at Amazon and Kindle books as a lead generation tool and an important part of your overall marketing funnel.Another great way to re-purpose content is through webinars and speaking engagements.Rob tells us how he converted content from a speaking engagement into a Kindle book and ultimately into an online video course. There really is no limit to how you can rework and re-purpose your content. How Long Does Course Creation Take?Rob says his courses take him a little bit longer to create than he likes but overall it is very possible to create a good quality, 1.5 to 2-hour course in four weeks while doing other things. This doesn't have to be a full-time commitment.Even once you are generating a good residual income from your online course sales, you can enjoy a lifestyle of travel and time with family and friends while creating and maintaining your courses.Rob recommends that anyone embarking on their entrepreneurial journey read Tim Ferris's Four Hour Workweek.Let's Review The FlowWe start with free content creation, there are numerous options here from hosting your own Blog to YouTube, Google+, Blab etc. From our free content we encourage our audience to join our email list.Create paid content - EBooks, video courses etc. by reworking your free content and by addressing feedback and questions asked by your audience. Is Udemy for Everybody? The short answer is no. If you're a guru who is selling your courses on your own site for $2000 then Udemy isn't for you.If you are in a highly targeted niche, then you may have to look at other channels and platforms. You have to go where your audience lives. In closing Rob advises that even if you have created a Udemy courses that isn't doing well don't give up. Through creating a course, you have gained valuable skills and become a better video course creator. Also, no-one has made a big success on Udemy with only one course.
You need to keep on trying and keep on creating more courses. You can then cross promote your courses to your existing students. To find out more about Rob you can visit his site at http://robcubbon.com. I highly recommend that you subscribe to his email list. It's with great delight that I get to bring on to the Join Up Dots show a man from the UK, who in many ways had a background similar to myself. A few years back he was working in London on a string of meaningless freelance jobs doing picture research, typesetting and a little design for various agencies. He knew that he wasn't stimulating himself, so in 2006 he set up a website to start his own company in an attempt to do some of this boring work at home rather than in a boring office. And to his delight it worked, and he worked for someone else for the last time in 2008. By keeping blogging, creating content and doing web and graphic design work for his own clients, his business grew and grew, and then in 2012 he came to a big decision in his life. His marriage failed in 2012, and being inspired by the words of Tim Ferriss and location independent entrepreneurs asked himself the question "Why am I living in London?" So since September last year he has been mostly living in Thailand as well as travelling in Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines. So does he look back at his life with totally new glasses, and think "Wow, once you start taking consistent action what a life you can create?" And does he think that anyone can do this, or is their a huge super-talent that he has that no one else does? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Mr Rob Cubbon

Here at BrilliantLivingHQ.com we love thinking and talking about how our thoughts impact our lives. How what we think makes a difference to what we do, which is where the concept of mind management comes in. When we realise we don’t have to be defined and confined by the way we think, because they’re just thoughts and we are more than our thoughts, we can do something about it to make changes and get the life we want. We call it managing your mind. Our guest for today, Rob Cubbon, calls it ‘freeing your thoughts’ and he’s done just that. So we just had to talk to him and now bring you the conversation in this week’s episode of the Changeability Podcast Rob Cubbon is an Amazon bestselling author, online teacher, graphic designer, digital nomad and all-round good guy! Rob helps and inspires people to build sustainable online businesses, earn passive income and experience greater freedom and happiness in their lives. “We are all born free. We are all freer than we think we are. But sometimes when you get up for work in the morning, freedom seems like a privilege reserved for the rich and famous…It isn’t.” Rob Cubbon Rob’s also the author of ‘Free your Thoughts: How I Re-programmed Myself For Happiness And How You Can Too’, his latest Amazon bestseller about the mindset shift he enjoyed which enabled him to sort out his life and start his own business, find his own calling and happiness. “If there’s one thing I want you to know, it’s this: you can do it. What was at the beginning of the mindset shift that saved me? The belief that I could improve my life by my own efforts and my own efforts alone.” Rob Cubbon Episode 58 The Changeability Podcast In episode 58 of the Changeability Podcast Rob talks about how he did this, sharing the good, the bad and the ugly, including: What Rob was up to in Crouch End, London in 2003 Why Rob thought he was unlucky The turning point that started Rob on his changed path What Derren Brown, a newspaper article and Buddhist monks taught him How he made the shift from his old beliefs to a new belief system Rob’s favourite technique for freeing your thoughts How Rob gave up smoking almost overnight How to overcome negative self-talk Rob’s favourite affirmations Where you stop and the world starts What life is like for Rob nowadays How you can do it - start to free your thoughts and re-program yourself for happiness “Mindset is more important than technical ability, more important than people skills, and more important than any other capability you may have or may gain in the future.” Rob Cubbon Links Rob’s book: Free Your Thoughts: How I Re-programmed Myself For Happiness And How You Can Too Rob’s website: RobCubbon.com Affirmations If you enjoyed this interview please send Rob a tweet to let him know at @RobCubbon
First of all thank you so much for the amazing feedback for the episode 100. For those who have not listened to it - the write 2b read podcast episode 100 featured interview with me, which my friend podcaster Bill Nowicki had recorded just few days after the podcast was launched. So if you wanna know more about me as a person and find out who stands behind this voice and as I’ve been told pretty thick James Bond girl accent - then head over to www.anialexander.com/100 By reaching the milestone of 100 episodes I spent some time thinking about how much I have learnt in less than a year of podcasting… And it’s not like all the things I’ve learnt are related to podcasting, not at all… So today I would like to talk about the coincidences in life… which later, looking back are things that had to happen in order to lead you to things which you had to come across. In order to explain what exactly I mean I’ll refer to the Write 2B Read podcast - which you are listening to right now and which has become a very crucial part of my life. So let me tell you its story. I thought about podcasting long before I actually launched this podcast. I love to talk, I love people, I am curious and I am a story teller, so it was sort of logical that podcasting could be something that I would enjoy… BUT what happens usually when we want to do something? Yup… self-doubts and excuses attack and push back the intention to do something new. And that’s exactly what happened to me back then. I recalled the fact that I have an accent and that would not sound well… I thought that the technical part of producing a podcast was very complicated and I also thought that no one would like to be interviewed by a completely unknown Armenian podcaster… And then the coincidences in my life came by one by one. First of all one of my good online friend and a fellow writer Rob Cubbon introduced me to my current podcasting mentor Meron Bareket. I don’t even remember how did the topic come up. It was long after the self doubt had won and I had decided that podcasting is not something I could possibly manage and had forgotten about it. So I got introduced to Meron’s free video tutorials, where he covers everything you need to know about launching a podcast (which by the way you can get too at www.podcastincubator.com/write2bread) and after watching the first few videos I realized that technically it is not as complicated as I thought. That sort of made me think that things were not impossible. So I drank a bottle if beer and recorded a few second audio to send out to few British friends and see if my accent would be bearable. The feedback was great and they told that I should definitely go ahead and start a podcast. So it all led me reach the point when I though “what the hell - let’s try it”. For me it was just an experimental project. I was going to do my best, try and see what happens. Now, when I think back … I might have never known Rob (btw I still don’t remember how we met online) and respectfully not be introduced to Meron… Even after the launch I might not have put so much time into it… or got so many amazing guests… or might have given up at the early stage… So I guess, things happen for a reason. When they do you don’t yet know where those things will lead you to… Yes there is an element of luck to meet the right person at the right time, to come up with an idea at a time when there are people who are willing to help you execute it, to gain the courage when you need it most… but if you embrace what comes and later on help the chain reaction with putting some time and effort on top of the initial coincidence amazing things may happen. When you get an idea for a book - help it become a book - start writing it and don’t let the uncertainty about whether it will sell or not stop you. When you meet someone online - help that person change your life - talk to him. I am connecting to 3 new people online each day. Some of them later become online friends, business partners and avid listeners. When you think about doing something you’d like to do - don’t overthink - just do it. Don’t let the imaginary barriers stop you from starting. When you get self-doubts - try to see how real the doubts are… maybe they are created and imagined by you and have nothing to do with the reality. Look back at all the coincidences in your life and you will realize that they were not pure coincidences. They were chances, opportunities and the beginnings of something new. They were the turning points and the twists that you needed in your life. They may lead you to amazing changes and make you create something amazing. Maybe coming across the Write 2B Read podcast was not a coincidence either and the fact that you are listening to me know means something… like that you need to write that book inside you, or you need to find out how to share the book you have already written with the world - or simply get the inspiration and the encouragement that you needed now. Go ahead and make things happen. You can do it! Oh and go ahead and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes to make sure that you don’t miss anything new :)

When I asked listeners last month who they'd like to hear on the show, Rob Cubbon is a name that came up from a couple different people. Rob's been crushing it lately between is online teaching efforts and his Kindle publishing business, and as luck would have it, is a Side Hustle Show listener himself. I've been following Rob's blog for some time myself, and have been really impressed with his journey. In fact, it's pretty inspiring and eye-opening to see some his quarterly income reports, with much of the money coming from Udemy.
