When Enough Is Enough Tom Morkes wasnt just the first guest to ever appear on Join Up Dots, but also the milestone 500th guest to appear for good reason. So inspired by the work he was doing before I leapt and quit my corporate job that I reached out and said to him “Tom, im thinking of quitting my job and giving it ago” and the advice I got back I'm still using today. Now on those first episodes we talked about how he had left the military with a desire to travel the world and create a business for himself on his own terms. How he would sit on his bed in his barracks and start creating something that he could show to the world and be proud off. Now he is the founder and CEO of Insurgent Publishing, author of “The Art of Instigating,” “The Complete Guide to Pay What You Want Pricing” and “Collaborate,” and host of the iconic podcast “In The Trenches,” where he interviews today's most fascinating marketers, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders, including: Dr. Jordan Peterson, Seth Godin, and John Jantsch among many others. Tom is a sought after marketing and growth consultant who has helped his clients reach the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller lists, set the record for the most-funded, non-fiction publishing project in Kickstarter history, and generate millions in sales online using his referral, influencer, and affiliate marketing strategies. Tom's ideas on marketing and entrepreneurship have been featured in a variety of top publications, including: Inc., Forbes, Business Insider, Entrepreneur, and Growthhacker TV. So what keeps him going when most of entrepreneurship is wandering into a world where the answers you need and want are mainly hidden from view ? And of course with all track records of success, there are dots that are a lot less successful so what has been his missteps' both professional and personally. Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots for the second time with Mr Tom Morkes
Growth happens outside of our comfort zone. The CEO of Insurgent Publishing, a book publishing and marketing company known for bringing “unconventional nonfiction to the creative outliers of the world”, he's helped launch 4 (and counting!) books to bestseller, working with folks like Jeff Goins, Jonathan Mead, and David Nihill. In this episode, Tom Morkes discusses how to get an influencer to support your product, which will help grow your business. Key Takeaways! Morkes defines an influencer as anyone whose opinion impacts the opinions or choices of others. By using blogs, podcasts, social media, business owners can become influencers in their own niches. This form of marketing is called influencer marketing, and it is essentially leveraging as many influences as you can to market and sell your products for you. (2:07) What makes and influencer NOT want to work with you? Cold emails, or emails that are very formulaic and lack emotion, don't make people of influence want to jump on board with you. Morkes likes to use the strategy of warming up emails, making them more inviting and personable, to gain these supporters. (3:16) You should ask yourself, how much is an influencer or promotional partner worth to you? Before you get involved with someone, you need to have a number in mind about how much you're are willing to spend on a partner. (4:20) There are 3 things you need to think about to get an influencer to say YES! to helping you promote your product (4:59) Is this a good fit for their audience? The influencer you are looking for should be able to relevantly support your product. Will this allow them to virtue signal? By associating with your brand or product, it should make the influencer look better to their friends and followers. How will they profit now and in the future? The influencer should be able to see how working with you will allow them to also profit from the partnership. His sequence to warm up people to working with you takes 4 steps (6:27) Follow them on their social media platforms. Sign up for their newsletter or email list. Engage with them on their social media. Reach out and ask them if you can provide help to them in any way. To find out more about Tom Morkes and his programs, you can visit TomMorkes.com. Tom Morkes and his company Insurgent Media specialize in virtual summits, affiliate marketing, and book launches. A virtual summit is a virtual online event where 10 to 30 subject matter experts each present in their sub-area of expertise with you as the organizer. This is a fantastic way to build a list, get credibility, and network with your peers. He walks us through his entire 4-6 month process in 5-6 phases that he plans with clients: strategy/planning: 1 month (two half-hour calls) research/recruitment: celebrities, leaders, popular/interesting topics (14 days for research, 2 months for recruitment) trust building: start conversations pre open-cart / pre-promotion: 2 weeks summit: 1-2 weeks Tom also discusses upsell opportunities. For example, summits are not very evergreen and tend to contain specific, cutting-edge information, while a membership site (which you can have as an upsell) contains evergreen information. You can also have a lot of fun with your summit and offer it for free, but later charge for replays and shownotes.
