Have you ever heard of the Watsonville Riots of 1930? From January 19, 1930 - January 23, 1930, racially motivated acts of violence toward Filipinos occurred. Prior to the riots, anti-Filipino rhetoric was already in place as a result of immigration policies and capitalistic acts by those who employed Filipino farm workers. During these riots, hunting parties would drag Filipinos out of their homes and beat them to near death. Some of the Filipinos were even thrown over bridges. These riots eventually stopped, but acknowledgement did not occur until many years later. It wasn't until 2011 when the State of California issued an apology. And it wasn't until 2020 that the City of Watsonville, CA issued their formal apology. How much about this event did you know about?

What's up y'all?! We're officially back with season three of the Pilipinx-American Stories Podcast. For those that are just tuning in to this podcast, here's a little blurb about what it's about: We are here to better understand the different aspects of the Pilipinx-American diaspora. We cover topics such as, but are not limited to, history, community, and Pilipinx-American culture. And this podcast is hosted by none other than Alfredo Leano. For 2021, we will be concentrating history of the Pilipinx-American diaspora. When I think history, I think about where the points connect from person to person, and that's essentially the goal of these conversations. How do the people in this cast connect to one another? And how does one connection lead to the next? Instead of a regular season with 10 episodes, we'll be doubling the number, totaling 20 episodes for this season. The episodes you'll be getting for the first ten weeks is part one. There will be little break in between, then you'll get the next set of episodes in part two. I can't emphasize enough how big this project is. What's wild is the fact that this season is only a stepping stone for the rabbit hole that is history. While this season may not be able to cover everything, please allow this to be the first part of that journey. Thank y'all again for listening, and I hope you enjoy this season!

I never would've thought that I would ever create a comparison between a show on TLC and the history American colonization of the Philippines. This week is a super interesting one, myself and Kathy, our guest for this episode, dive into the world of Big Ed and Rose Marie's relationship from "90 Day Fiance." These observations we've had in the past, but we wanted to do something that was a little more comprehensive, and doing so by bringing evidence to support our claims. This episode is not to be taken too seriously, it's mainly the two of us having conversation based on observation, and bouncing off ideas, and seeing where things end up. And, maaaaaan, the rabbit holes that we dived into were definitely real deep. Surprisingly, we've only scratched the surface of American colonization in the Philippines. Again, take this episode with a grain of salt. This episode is based on our own observations. The parallel between Big Ed and Rose's relationship and American colonization is not fact, is our opinions. Thank you to Kathy for being on this week's episode and vibing with us!
