You might be the best at what you do, a true expert in your field. But here's a hard truth: individual excellence alone won't sustain long-term success. Without a great team around you, even the most successful organisation can falter. In today's competitive landscape, the ability to build and nurture a high-performing team is crucial. A great sharing from Gavin Wood about how he built a value-based team at Newcrest Mining, and how his mentors helped him. What comes to mind when you think of mentorship? Oftentimes we picture the one-on-one type scenario like in Star Wars where Qui-Gon Jinn mentored Obi-Wan Kenobi who then later on matured and took Luke Skywalker under his wing.Yet, that can sometimes feel like a lot of pressure - to wait to be chosen by someone who sees something in you. Or, on the inverse side, it can be really difficult to select someone you want to invest your time & intention into that will truly benefit from your experience. I bring in my long-time (going on 10 years!) mentor in business, Mike Abercrombie, and we explore how mentorship is largely accidental. We discuss questions like - what is the difference between mentorship and coaching? What are the characteristics needed in a mentee? And, how do you know when you're ready to switch from mentee to mentor? Overall, you may find it to be less formulaic than we initially perceive and you can have micro-moments of mentorship in each stage of life. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/haven-the-podcast/support

I was totally jolted out of my art world cynicism by spending an hour with these two masters, one accomplished and one on his way. Don Porcella is a well-known artist with amazing, original work and a loooong resume of shows, fairs and collectors. Christian Williams, a young talent, seemingly plucked out of Buffalo, NY—comes to NYC and has the great good fortune of being paired with Don through Wild Geese Gallery. They share a sense of humor and other aesthetics in their work, but what comes through is the magic of a shared passion for creativity which produces a bond that transcends all of the other stuff. Though Don and Christian live hundreds of miles apart, I think these guys will be in touch for many, many years to come. Don Pocella Bio: Born and raised in Modesto, California, Don Porcella's artwork has been exhibited at galleries and museums around the world including the United States, China, Greece, Germany, France, Denmark, Colombia and Mexico. Porcella's art has been published in the New York Times, NY Arts, Fiber Arts Magazine, Chelsea Now, San Francisco Magazine and the Village Voice. He has a BA in Psychology from the University of California at San Diego, a BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts and an MFA from Hunter College in New York. Porcella's work is included in public and private collections across the United States and Europe. Porcella has received grants from the Council on the Arts and Humanities for Staten Island, the Brooklyn Arts Council, an EAF Fellowship from Socrates Sculpture Park, the 2012 West Collects Prize, an artist residency at the Museum of Arts and Design, and a 2014 Swatch Art Residency in Shanghai. In 2015 Porcella collaborated with an artist from Iran and the work was exhibited at the Venice Biennial. In 2016, Porcella created 4 installations for the Hermes Maison in Shanghai, China that was published in over 100 television, online and print media in the US and China. In 2018, Porcella created 7 installations for the Hermes boutique in Manhattan, NY which was featured in Architectural Digest, NY Magazine and Yahoo. More about Don's work HERE. Jacob shares the struggles that he faced along the way and the turning point in his life when he made a shift and didn't look back. Jacob made a list of the things that he couldn't live without - extreme sports, traveling, and helping people, and he found a way to build a life around them. This episode is packed full of inspiration. Jacob hopes to change the way people view skateboarders and after hearing this episode, you might just ponder the idea that skateboarders can do incredible work and also skate. Jacob Jenkins is a skateboarder and entrepreneur born in Charlotte, currently living in Phoenix. He moved to Arizona after backpacking around Central America for seven months and created Now Evolving Skateboarding Worldwide, a 501c3 nonprofit that focuses on building influential leaders through skateboarding while donating skateboards to foster care and feeding families in need. His inspiration came from seeing so many people around the world struggle and from the deep connection he had made with locals through the love of skateboarding. He made a commitment to himself that he would go back, build skateparks, and make the world a better place. He has donated over 100 skateboards through his nonprofit to local foster care and children in need around the world. The process is simple, when you buy a skateboard, NESW will donate one. He has also hosted the first skate competition in the Galapagos Islands, events in Panama, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Arizona. But, his proudest accomplishment has been feeding families in need, consisting of a thanksgiving food drive where volunteers get together to deliver thanksgiving feasts to at-risk families throughout the holidays.Follow Jacob on InstagramGet a skateboard = donate a skateboard
