Today we chat with Rico King about why he thinks Toronto is struggling to tackle a growing gun problem. Rico King is an American documentary filmmaker who is putting his lens on the people and communities impacted by gun violence in Toronto. Rico King is also a film producer, director, screenwriter & actor best known for producing Tears in the Bayou. In 2016, Rico was awarded the prestigious Best Film and Best Documentary at the Mount Vernon Film Festival for his film Down in the Hole, a documentary about police brutality and life in Baltimore, MD. In 2017 he then also received the prestigious diamond award for his documentary Tears in the Bayou along with two more awards for a short film he shot for SAG-AFTRA called With Dad. Having been a resident of all the neighborhoods in his films, Rico traditionally dedicates his characters to real life people he knew or events he experienced or witnessed. In addition to working as a film producer and actor, Rico King is also an entrepreneur and community activist. His charity work includes the No Shoot Zone, an organization dedicated to transforming the lives of young children and their neighborhoods and The Kingdom's Children, a non-profit that helps house, clothe and pay for the education of orphans in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Just ask Rhonelle Bruder.   At the age of 16 Rhonelle first encountered what seemed to be the glamorous and alluring sex world. It was a girl only a few years older than her who was her introduction. She had a condo, a perfectly polished appearance and the finest of everything. It turns out she was also a recruiter. Rhonelle soon found herself caught up in a not so glamorous situation. Luckily for her she was able to escape after a few short months. Now as the creator of the R.I.S.E. Initiative, Rhonelle is helping youth avoid and escape the realities of sexual exploitation, poverty and homelessness. Her light shines brightly on the darkness of a world so few even know exists. It was almost as if it were predestined. At the very least, it was seared into Mubin's gene pool. He was the grandson of an undercover cop in India, but York region is not India. By day, he was a public school student and by night he went to medresa - Islamic school. It was the perfect storm for an identity crisis and his was a tornado. When Mubin was shamed for a common teenage blunder, he found himself in his Muslim faith. His quest for Allah took him overseas where he came face-to-face with the Taliban. They were just what he was looking for... at least this is what he thought. A belief that came crashing down with the second plane on 9/11. It took 2 years in Syria - studying with Sufi Muslims, to correct his views and bring him inline with his purpose. Now Mubin is following in his grandfather’s footsteps. As an undercover personnel, he worked with CSIS and the RCMP to fight the good fight against terrorism on Canadian soil. Mubin is even featured in the Washington Spy Museum, where they have an entire wall on him and the incredible work he has done. If it weren’t for these he says he never would’ve graduated from high school. Years later while living in Honduras with Urban Promise, grace showed up again. This time it saved others through art and music. Returning the favour he once received, Duane created, Genesis Community of the Arts. An initiative that fosters the growth of creative programs in Honduras. Between life with his strict Indian parents and the street life in Brampton, it was definitely a struggle, but fortunately for Ron the positive forces in his life took the win in the end. As an adult Ron later joined what he and his friends would have once considered the enemy... The police force. A path that not all his friends followed him down. It had seemed like his past was far behind him until he received a phone call one day. His childhood best friend had hung himself in prison. Granville Mayers is an athletic specimen - a fact that simply cannot be argued. It was at the age of 5 that he first became aware of this. He was way faster and far more explosive than the other kids on the soccer field and by the time he was in the 8th grade, he was dunking! Later, playing just about every sport there was, it seemed like his football abilities would make him out to be one of the NFL greats, but all the success made it’s way to his head. He never did make it to the NFL but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. With a whole new outlook on life, he’s now a 14x powerlifting world champion and owns an eminent body transformation gym. Far more than a trainer, this coach has worked with Tristian Thompson, Big Daddy Kane and thousands of others. He doesn’t just transform bodies, he transforms minds ...and it all started with his own. We all have heroes. For The Waterboy it was Captain Insano, and for young Tyler Buxton it was boxing champion, Sean O’Sullivan. There he was skipping and hitting pads in his hometown of Belleville, Ontario. An alluring sight that roped in 6 year old, Tyler into the world of boxing. He was hooked! Later, Tyler had his own fight in his early days as a boxing promoter. It seemed like a guaranteed win but it didn’t exactly go as planned.
