"With a quarter million miles under her belt and counting, North Carolina native Emily Scott Robinson travels the dusty highways of America's wild country, capturing the stories of the people she meets and expertly crafting them into songs. Robinson received critical acclaim for her debut album Traveling Mercies-- Rolling Stone named it one of the “40 Best Country and Americana Albums of 2019.” In 2021, Robinson signed with Oh Boy Records, the label founded by the legendary John Prine, and released her follow-up album "American Siren." It made numerous “Best of 2021” lists including NPR, Rolling Stone, American Songwriter, and No Depression." (emilyscottrobinson.com) I've been wanting to have ESR on the show for a while, and when I learned she was playing a show with a couple of my friends at the end of 2024, I made them ask her for me! She said yes, and here we are. Robinson currently resides in Ouray, CO, and tours the US and UK consistently. Recently, she supported Ron Pope for a run in the UK. During our conversation, we chat about traveling logistics out of a small town (tisk tisk Southwest!!), her life changing experience at Song School at Rocky Mountain Folks Fest in Lyons, CO, and her decision to buy an RV and travel as a full time musician in her 20s. We had the pleasure of interviewing Ron Pope over Zoom video!Ron Pope is a Nashville-based, critically-acclaimed, fiercely independent, platinum recording. Ron's music has been streamed billions of times, and it's been featured on tv shows like “90120,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” and more. Recently, his song “A Drop In The Ocean,” which became an enduring fan favorite after it was featured in “Vampire Diaries,” went viral on TikTok, introducing it to a whole new set of young fans. Ron's new LP, Inside Voices, out now via Brooklyn Basement Records, is a 10-track gut-puncher - the rawest, most vulnerable, stripped-down set of songs he's ever recorded. The album was created in the wake of back-to-back tragedies in Ron's family - his wife, Blair, had lost a pregnancy; her next was diagnosed as ectopic, which almost took her life. The Pope family was in an extremely dark place. To find some sense of normalcy, Ron packed up Blair and their young daughter and took a trip to the beach. It was a life-giving experience after so much heartbreak. Ron, who hadn't been able to write a song in a year during this period, was able to tap back into his creativity, and 75 or more songs poured out of him. In the midst of the writing process, Ron lost his beloved grandparents within eight days of each other; their 60+ year marriage was an inspiration to him, and also inspired several of the songs on the record. He decided he wanted to record the album in a secluded place by the water, with his family close by - his normal studio grind of 18-hour days locked away from them was no longer a viable option. Ron found the perfect spot by the tranquil waters of the Peconic Bay in a rural area on Long Island, NY. He and his friend/longtime collaborator, Paul Hammer, set about the painstaking process of setting up a studio, recording, engineering, and playing all of the instruments themselves in their cottage by the sea.The album, born from tragedy and a major dose of perspective, is a realization that true, lasting love is an action, a choice you make every single day. Inside Voices is the sound of a man stripped bare, broken down, and rebuilt. It shows Ron Pope at the height of his prowess - a writer speaking with honesty, vulnerability, and ultimately, gratitude.hellofresh.com/backwards50Promo Code: backwards50We want to hear from you! I asked my husband, did you put a napkin in the door? And he said no.' Mims went back inside the restaurant to wash her hands before leaving. Soon after the pair drove away, she started feeling intense tingles in her hand and arm. ‘Maybe five minutes, my whole arm started tingling and feeling numb. I couldn't breathe,' she said. ‘I started getting hot flashes, my chest was hurting, my heart was beating really fast.' Her husband immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital, where a doctor said what had happened almost sounded like an attempted kidnapping. source: Woman celebrating her birthday 'poisoned by restaurant napkin' (msn.com)

Talented singer/songwriter Ron Pope joins us, bringing some of his more recent original songs; plus the elegant performer and singer Pieta Brown returns to eTown after several years to share some of her well-crafted tunes. And a golden eagle named Scout appears on the eTown stage in person with his “personal human” (and dear friend) who has been single-handedly saving injured wildlife in Utah for decades.
The guys celebrate the milestone of EPISODE 150! It’s all about the tunes that got us through the year 2020 including Liz Longley, Tay Tay, Harry Styles (and Wayne once again questions Ben’s musical tastes), Tom Petty, Rev, Ken Yates, Brian Dunne, Ian Jones, Grace Potter, the greatness of Maggie Rose, Pete Yorn (thanks to Aaron Lee Tasjan), Ron Pope, Striking Matches, Yumi Zouma, Nada Surf, Roger Harvey, the Alternate Routes made us cry, and Rick Brantley is a stud. Take this episode for what it’s worth because it is what it is (yes, Lilly Hiatt, we hate that too). Samtalet i ”skivcirkeln” behandlar Stina Nordenstams superhyllade album ”And She Closed Her Eyes” från 1994. Samtalet i ”skivcirkeln” behandlar The Cranberries album ”No Need To Argue” från 1994. Samtalet i ”skivcirkeln” behandlar The Cardigans album ”Gran Turismo” från 1998. Episode 123: Ron Pope is a case study in good indie art and commerce. He's an admired songwriter with an avid following for his cathartic, detail-laden songs and his range across a bunch of roots and rock and roll genres. Over more than a dozen albums, he's steered his own ship in a business partnership with his wife/manager and their Brooklyn Basement Records. The newest project is the sweeping album Bone Structure. A Georgia native, he got his career moving in New York and then moved to Nashville, where he's raising a daughter and keeping the songs flowing. Also in the hour, a radio field trip to Nashville's shrine of analog recording, Welcome To 1979.
Ron Pope wrote "A Drop in the Ocean," a mammoth hit that he had no idea would resonate with an audience so much. Then he wrote "One Grain of Sand" and enjoyed similar astronomical success. He talks to Pat Healy about triumphs and tribulations with major labels and streaming services, as well as Brooklyn Basement Records, the label he founded with his wife and manager, Blair Pope. In the ever-evolving landscape of today's music industry, Nashville-based independent artist Ron Pope has plotted his own course. Uncompromising and relentless, Pope has evolved into one of the top grossing independent acts in the business while garnering a legion of devoted fans the world over. Taking the industry-road-less-traveled and holding fiercely to his independence has proven fruitful for Pope; to date, he has sold out shows on three continents and in more than 20 countries, sold over 2 million digital tracks, had over 290 million streams on Spotify, 700 million plays on Pandora, 150 million views on Youtube, and has more generally crushed every metric used to measure what is possible for independent artists. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/bestof13 In this episode, Ron discusses: -His creative origins and how he got to the point he is today as a songwriter and musician. -His involvement at the inception of “The District.” -How he writes such a large quantity of songs because he knows that not all of them will be good enough to make a record. -The belief that if you want to be a songwriter, you just have to sit down, shut up, and write songs. -How he doesn’t really believe in writer’s block. It is just accepting that some of the stuff you write will be garbage. -The importance of working harder than everyone else if you want to excel to the highest level of your creative field. -One of the times that he was having a very difficult time writing a song, and then all of the sudden he was struck with the song in its entirety. -How doing the hard work every day and getting used to what the work feels like puts you in a better position to capture inspiration and put it into its “physical” form, even in just one take. -The role that music played in his life when he was younger to make him feel more connected and less alone. -The profound connection that comes when people play his music during special events. -How his song “I Do Not Love You” played a special role in Youngman Brown’s life as his first dance at his wedding. -How art is subjective and it doesn’t matter what the artist thinks about it once the viewer or listener has given it his or her own meaning. -How hard it is to comprehend large numbers of listenership, and the power that comes from one-on-one connections. -What he has been up to creating and touring his new album Ron Pope & the Nighthawks. Ron's Final Push will inspire you to choose to do the thing you love! Quotes: “That songwriting circle was really the difference for me. If I hadn’t joined that group, I don’t know if I would have been able to become a professional songwriter.” “I just feel like I’m not good enough to sit down and write ten songs and have all ten of those songs be bangers and have that be the record.” “For my last album, Ron Pope and the Nighthawks I wrote 150 songs. We recorded 40 of them or so to get to the 11 that we have on the record.” “Really almost everything is like this. If you want to do it, and you want to do it at a high level, you’re going to have to work harder than everybody else.” “It was like I got hit by lightning. It was into my brain immediately. The song in my bones just existed. The whole thing. The melody, the lyrics, the chords, the whole thing.” “You put yourself in a much better position to have chance favor you if you do the right kind of work.” “It made me excited when I stumbled upon music that made me feel something. It made me feel much less alone.” “I very rarely share the stories behind my songs because I want you to take them home and make them your stories.” “It’s still a really powerful feeling to know that whatever you’re creating is a part of people’s lives.” “For me it’s the singular achievement of my life as an artist.” “You’re going to have to work hard on something eventually whether it’s something you choose or something that people make you do, so if you have to pick, you might as well work hard at something that you love.” “It’s worth it to work hard on things that you love.” Links mentioned: Buy Ron Pope & The Nighthawks East Nashville Spice Company Connect with Ron: Website / iTunes / Spotify / Facebook / Instagram / Twitter / YouTube On the next episode: John Wentz : Website / Instagram Join the discussion in the Facebook group!

Kelsey Waldon is a charming and heart-rending at the same time. With a twinkle in her eye she can pierce you with melancholy or shiv a rival with icy cool worthy of Loretta Lynn. The latter was more the feeling of opening song “False King” with a hook I love: “You can’t place a crown on the head of a clown and hope he turns out to be a king.” Kind of reminded me of current events. There were curtains of gorgeous steel guitar from Brett Resnick, notably the solo on set closer “All By Myself.” Also sweet was Walson’s slow rocking take on Bill Monroe’s “Travelin’ Down This Lonesome Road.” She knows lonesome and she showed it.

Ron has stood at the crossroads where so many musicians find themselves – at the intersection of record label and independence. In an ever-evolving industry filled with rejection and compromise, he has plotted a new course for his music to reach loyal listeners, taking the industry-road-less-traveled in exchange for the ultimate payback, a league of devoted fans the world over (and I am one of them). He has sold over 2 million singles to date, he averages 15 million spins a MONTH on Pandora, and his songs have been streamed over 120 million times. His songs have been featured on “The Voice,” “Vampire Diaries,” 90210” and “So You Think You Can Dance.” His latest album “Ron Pope & the Nighthawks,” is available everywhere music is sold.
