Out of the hundreds of species found in the Mountain State, some of the most eye-catching include the Hooded Warbler. These colorful songbirds look more like they're preparing to rob a bank or go on a secret mission rather than hunt for insects or a mate. Or, how about the double-crested Cormorant? With a wing span averaging nearly four feet across, this water bird is among the largest found in West Virginia. It seems we're back in that strange space in time where there are days that can 70 degrees and sunny and beautiful. The birds are singing and the blossoms on trees are beginning to light up the branches like a holy and natural Christmas lights… and then the next day we're right back into the holds of a winter that every year seems to overstay its welcome. You get a taste of that warmth in your bones, and it's just enough to whet your appetite for all the things that feel so far away… long walks outside, swimming, afternoons on restaurant patios with friends… and the sun not setting at 4:30 pm. It's like a brief kind of nostalgia. We know that these things were within our grasp just few months ago but a few months darkness is enough to make it feel like it's been that much longer. And it's in this liminal space, it's nice to reflect on some of the things that reminds of these warmer points in time. Its in the sunshine and humid air of the summer of 2022 that we sat down with John R. Miller and Chloe Edmonstone. John is a singer-songwriter and West Virginia native, orginally from the Shenandoah Valley. A long-time songsmith, Miller has been running in the Appalachian circuit for a few years before settling in Nashville. His first studio album “Depreciated” was released in July of 2021. Miller's songwriting style is as natural as flowing river and and is backed by voice that has a crackling warmth to it. It is friendly and picturesque, even in his darker moments across the album. Backed by harmonies and almost familial sounding fiddle playing by Chloe Edmonstone (who was a founding member of the group Locust honey)- the album is all parts familiar and strange.

In the latest episode of Inside Appalachia, we'll hear stories from creators across Appalachia and how they process their lives through their art, including songwriting, photography and self-published zines. We'll talk with a climber who challenged the climbing community to rename racist and sexist route names, and won. Also in this episode, West Virginia singer and songwriter John R. Miller brings us up-to-speed on his new album. Cryptid Glass Art Blenko Glass is based in Milton, West Virginia. At the beginning of the pandemic, the company took a huge hit and had to lay off nearly all of its employees. But thanks to a federal loan and some clever marketing, they've rehired almost everyone back and had one of their most profitable years in decades. New River Gorge Guidebook Renames Route Names In October 2020, we talked with West Virginia rock climbers who took on racist, sexist and other offensive route names in the New River Gorge. DJ Grant is a Black climber who helped kickstart the effort to change offensive names that were found throughout the Gorge. The routes — and the pioneering climbers who made them — are recorded in a two-volume guidebook called “New River Rock,” which contains about 3,000 rock-climbing routes in the Gorge and surrounding areas. Last year, Grant and others asked the New River Alliance of Climbers to change some of those route names to get rid of racist and offensive language. A new edition of the book hit shelves this July. Inside Appalachia reporter Zack Harold checked in with Grant on the latest. John R. Miller Singer and songwriter John R. Miller grew up in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle in a small town called Hedgesville. He's gotten pretty well known across the state and has performed on West Virginia Public Broadcasting's Mountain Stage a few times. Now, he's got a new album called “Depreciated.” Three Women Come Together To Form Asheville Band Asheville, North Carolina, is known for its vibrant music scene. It's a destination for touring musicians, but it's home to a thriving local scene, too, anchored by record stores, small venues and house shows. The Smoky Mountain Sirens were formed by three women who'd played in multiple Asheville bands, and as Blue Ridge Mountain Radio's Matt Peiken reports, they decided to try something new. North Carolina Author Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle is a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee in North Carolina. In late 2020, she published her first novel, “Even As We Breathe.” It's a mystery of sorts, set at an upscale mountain resort, and as great books always do, it calls us to think hard about the world around us. NPR's Neda Ulaby visited the author near the reservation where she grew up. Appalachian Zines A zine, in essence, is a self-published magazine. A zine can be big and glossy, but it's a lot more likely to be produced by an individual person, often handwritten and made on a photocopier, with the paper folded and stapled. Artist and designer Suzie Kelly has been making zines for more than half of her lifetime. She eventually moved to Florida where she went to a couple of zine fests and got fired up again. When she moved to Johnson City several years ago, she asked, “Why not have a zine fest here, too?”

We had the pleasure of interviewing John R. Miller over Zoom video! Emerging singer-songwriter and guitarist John R. Miller released his debut solo album Depreciated, July 16 on historic record label, Rounder Records!Depreciated blends a vast array of classic sounds from countrypolitan and swamp rock to the Tulsa sound, which attracted multiple Grammy nominee Justin Francis (Leon Bridges, Kacey Musgraves, Margo Price) and renowned guitarist Adam Meisterhans to produce the album. Miller was signed after a moment of industry serendipity: another producer walked past the studio where Francis was mixing the album, and was so impressed with what he heard that he passed the music on to an A&R person for Concord.Miller began playing music as a young teenager in a tight-knit DIY scene in West Virginia. Miller's first band was a punk quartet he and his friends formed at 14 years old. They would rent out church halls and Ruritan clubs to put on shows since they were not old enough to perform in bars. Before long, he gravitated toward folk and country music, which ignited a burning desire to travel as a touring musician and eventually drove him to quit school. He busked with a string band to earn a living and traveled to D.C., New York, and Knoxville, and would pen his own songs in his downtime. He spent the next 15 years as a touring musician, both leading bands and playing as a side man and bass player for a litany of other songwriters including the Hackensaw Boys, Sierra Ferrell, and J.P. Harris. Depreciated takes us back to Miller's time growing up in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia and reflects on his relationship with his childhood home and the way things diminish over time, whether they be the car he drove off the lot, or the relationships he left behind. Depreciated was recorded at the legendary Studio A of Sound Emporium in Nashville. Miller was ably backed on the sessions by Meisterhans, who contributed guitar and production; co-producer Francis on congas and Wurlitzer, Chloe Edmonstone offering a plaintive fiddle, John Looney on mandolin, Jonathan Beam providing bass, Russ Pahl's shimmery pedal steel, John Clay on drums, and Robbie Crowell playing the Wurlie and Hammond B3.We want to hear from you! Everything from songwriting, to photography, to self-published zines. Suzie Kelly has been making zines for more than 20 years. She talks about how DIY publishing can connect people in unexpected ways. “Maybe a kid in California finds an Appalachian zine and decides to move to Appalachia,” Kelly told Inside Appalachia co-host Mason Adams. We'll talk to a climber who challenged the climbing community to rename racist and sexist route names — and won. Also in this episode, West Virginia singer and songwriter John R. El nuevo single de la banda tejana Mike And The Moonpies inicia un nuevo domingo de música vaquera. Mike And The Moonpies, Paycheck to PaycheckThe Flatlanders, She Belongs to MeThe Flatlanders, Treasure of LoveJohn R. Miller, Lookin' Over My ShoulderJohn R. If you're a fan of country or bluegrass music, there's a chance you've seen John R. Miller perform without even realizing it. The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has spent most of his adult life as a touring musician, both in his own bands and as the touring bassist or guitarist in other projects. After years spent supporting the artistic efforts of others as a hired hand, Miller is ready to make a name for himself. On July 16, Miller was release Depreciated, his wonderful full-length debut on Rounder Records that's already earning high praise from respected music resources. Prior to the record's release and his return to the road, Miller spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about making Depreciated, staying productive and positive in a year without touring, and all the projects that preceded his solo turn. Over the course of the conversation, Miller talked about his punk past in a small West Virginia town, his brief-yet-artistically significant stint in college, busking all around the East Coast during his 20s, his time in bands like The Fox Hunt and Prison Book Club, and the ups and downs of spending years on the road. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. On Top Of The World". Escuchar audio

Look what the cat dragged in. Man. No matter how hard I try I just can't quit this ish. I'll be honest. I am not sure anyone cares what I think is good music anymore but I guess we're about to find out. Confessionals aside, man it is good to be back doing something to promote bands I love! We're coming in hot right out of the gate. Got that new Sturgill Simpson on tap. Ms. Eilen Jewell has put out a new album that does nothing to discredit her stellar catalog so you know we were gonna drop a song from that. Larkin Poe is keeping it delta and dirty. I have the often rumore but rarely heard new Will Quinlan song as well as a Whiskey Myers song that is, as the kids say, straight fire. So. Do me a favor. Set an hour and a half aside and put your earholes on these songs. Who knows. Your next favorite band might be in there somewhere. If you enjoy the show please like, subscribe, do all that social media stuff and then, go old school and tell your friends about us. Tracklisting: 01. Drive-By Truckers - Nine Bullets 02. He' going to be on our show soon. Foolish or courageous?Jene asks Jerry to sign an agreement that he will not mock him on the show. Jerry of course refused, as Jene's favorite pasttime is setting himself up for mockery. Jene asks Jerry how he'll survive flying commercial like the rest of us. Jerry doesn't seem to have worked through that yet. And Jerry's Take? Will Trump's lawyers allow him to be interviewed by special prosecutor Robert Mueller? Musical guest: John R. Miller.
