POPULARITY
Kelsey Waldon has established herself as an artist firmly in tune with herself as a writer yet not content with resting on her sterling reputation. With each record her pen has further flowered, culminating in this instance with an invigorating album that pays homage to country music's past while forging toward a confessional, self-reflective, vulnerable brand of tunes that stands out even among many of her esteemed peers. Given that she was introduced to a broader audience when she signed with the late, legendary John Prine's Oh Boy Records in 2019, one would be forgiven for thinking Kelsey is relatively new to the music scene. On the contrary, she has paid her dues and the years of honing her craft jump out on Every Ghost. Davey Allen is a versatile songwriter, musician, and artist. His work is deeply rooted in the vast American songbook. Allen has played music professionally for the past 20 years, the last six with Davey and The Midnights. The band formed on the west-side of Los Angeles, California in 2017. The group immediately set out to establish themselves as one of the hardest working Americana bands in Southern California. They've toured up and down the Western US coast, the deserts of the Southwest, the Rocky Mountains, the cornfields of the Midwest, and through the musical heartland of the US South. Since 2021 the band has called Indianapolis, Indiana home.Davey and The Midnights have shared the stage with acts such as Kelsey Waldon, Dale Watson, Jesse Daniel, Nikki Lane, TK and the Holy Know-Nothings, the Cordovas, Cristina Vane, Chris Pierce, Rob Leines, and Izaak Opatz. Their emotionally charged, high energy performances are not to be missed. Davey has also toured extensively as a solo artist and as keyboardist for rock hall of famer Eric Burdon. In addition, he has toured as a member of the San Francisco rock band The Stone Foxes. Davey is an advocate of many social causes and has previously donated a portion of his album sales to the Dolores Huerta Foundation and the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Center.

Editor's note: Basic Folk is pleased to introduce our listeners to one of our favorite podcasts by sharing an episode in our feed! The Other 22 hours, hosted by singer/songwriter Michaela Ann and producer Aaron Shafer-Haisse, talks to fellow musicians about the helpful tools and routines the use to stay creative, inspired, and sane while navigating a career built on their art. The thing I like about this podcast is that these conversations are between musicians. They're very real. The musicians share insights that go beyond normal bio questions. They talk about things that can actually translate into non musicians' lives. They dive in deep right from the start. I came across this podcast when they interviewed Leyla McCalla and was blown away by that conversation. Some other favorites have been William Prince, Gretchen Peters. Today we're going to share their conversation with Mary Chapin Carpenter. I hope you enjoy and subscribe and follow and support Aaron and Michaela on The Other 22 hours.Episode SummaryMary Chapin Carpenter is an 18x Grammy nominated, 5x Grammy winning, 6x platinum-selling singer-songwriter with over 16 albums and decades of touring so far in her career. We talk with Mary Chapin about her songwriting process, including her need for solitude and her practice of "song walking," we talk about how she still faces rejection even with all of her accolades and commercial success, how common and easy it is to personalize mistreatment from people in power (and how to combat that), and much more on this very candid final episode of Season 1.Episode NotesMary Chapin Carpenter is an 18x Grammy nominated, 5x Grammy winning, 6x platinum-selling singer-songwriter with over 16 albums and decades of touring so far in her career. Episode 281: There are countless reasons to pay homage to the legacy of country music and almost as many different ways to do so. Both of my guests this week - the Canadian artist Bahamas and Nashville's Kelsey Waldon - are doing just that in their own ways with recent projects. At a time when country traditions are strong across the Americana landscape, Bootcut by Bahamas and There's Always A Song by Waldon demonstrate the power of devotion to a craft on one hand and celebration of heroes on the other.

Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateWhen Tré Burt was signed to John Prine's Oh Boy Records in 2019, he was one of only two artists—including label-mate Kelsey Waldon, to join the label in the past 15 years. The Sacramento-born singer/songwriter had released his debut album independently, catching the attention of Prine's son Jody Whelan, who sent Tré a message on social media. Sadly, the message, which landed in one of those secret inboxes no one knows about, remained unread for a long time. When Tré finally found it and responded, it began a relationship with the label and allowed him into John Prine's orbit. He only met the man once after John came backstage at one of his shows. The kindness and opportunity Prine imparted on Tré cannot be understated by the young musician. We talked about John's impact and how he helped shape and reinforce Tré's writing.thanks to a school project. Formerly a fast picking guitarist (much like the busy and flowing style of The Tallest Man on Earth), his playing slowed down when his writing got more intense as that helped in getting people's attention. We also discuss the range in his comfortability when it comes to speaking about the Black experience in folk music. This stemmed from his appearance on Adia Victoria's excellent podcast Call and Response, which is a must listen. It's an important moment where two Black people who create music in a white space talk about what that entails in finite detail.Tré is easy to talk to and we cover a lot: from his grandfather's impact to an operator at T-Mobile recognizing his name from his music. One thing we didn't mention, but I mentioned her in the Lightning Round is his pet bearded dragon, Yara. I thought he had a pic of her online, but I couldn't find it. I swear she exists. Okay enjoy Tré! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
My guest today is Randy LeRoy a musician, engineer, A&R, and mastering engineer in Nashville TN and Takoma Park Maryland. A graduate of the recording program at Middle Tennessee State University (also my alma mater) he got his first gig cutting publishing demos on Nashville's “Music Row” in CBS Song's basement studio, editing radio spots on ¼” tape for a company called Starliners and hanging out in small studios around town. Eventually, he was offered a job with CBS Records as an A&R coordinator and spent time in high-end facilities like Emerald, Stargem, The Dog House, Masterfonics, Sound Shop, Treasure Isle, Studio 19, and even legendary studios like The Record Plant in LA while working for CBS. Randy worked with a variety of the label's many noteworthy artists such as Ray Benson, George Jones, Ricky Van Shelton, Tammy Wynette, Vern Gosdin, and Exile. In 1988 Glenn Meadows at Masterfonics offered him a job as his mastering assistant where Randy learned how to cut reference lacquers, assemble and quality checking masters, and help out engineers during mixing, while mastering small projects on his own. At Masterfonics he would work alongside notable country music producers like Jimmy Bowen, Tony Brown, James Stroud, Jerry Crutchfield, and Barry Beckett. And in 1991 Randy left Masterfonics to start his own mastering studio, Final Stage Mastering located in Sound Stage Studios on Music Row in Nashville where he worked on more Grammy nominated and winning projects throughout the 1990s and 2000s such as Relient K's Two Lefts Don't Make A Right… but Three Do, Allison Brown's Fair Weather, Nappy Root's Humdinger, and Jamey Johnson's That Lonesome Song, to name a few. In June of 2010, Randy left Nashville to become the Senior Mastering Engineer at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD where he has mastered some of the biggest names in country, bluegrass, folk, Americana, and gospel such as Jim Lauderdale, Bryan Sutton, Jamey Johnson, Dale Ann Bradley, Colin Hay, Kelsey Waldon, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Gold City, and John Cowan. including the 2020 Grammy Winning, Michael Cleveland's “Tall Fiddler” and two other Grammy nominated albums in the Best Bluegrass Album category. Davey Allen is a versatile songwriter, musician, and artist whose work is deeply rooted in the vast American songbook. Though his family migrated north from rural Tennessee in the 1950's Allen's music retains a southern quality and grit. Davey has toured extensively as a solo artist and as keyboardist for others. Davey is an advocate of many social causes and has previously donated a portion of his album sales to the Dolores Huerta Foundation, which works on behalf of San Joachin Valley individuals and families at the receiving end of harmful and discriminatory practices. -- Both his talent and hard work have opened lots of doors for him as an artist. Davey Allen has shared the stage and performed with players from Bob Weir and Patti Smith to Nathaniel Ratliff and Kelsey Waldon. For the past five years or so, Davey has recorded and toured with Rock n Roll Hall of Famer, Eric Burdon and the Animals. While Davey Allen has spent a good deal of his adult life both in California and on the road, he now lives and also records in the Indianapolis area.

I Standing In Your Way?- Kelsey Waldon, They'll Never Keep Us Down- Garrett T. We're kicking off the month of December being joined by singer-songwriter Kelsey Waldon. The Kentucky songwriter released They'll Never Keep Us Down, a seven-song collection of covers just two weeks ago. With songs such as Kris Kristofferson's "The Law is for Protection of the People," Bob Dylan's "With God on Our Side," and the Hazel Dickens title track, Waldon offers songs that are just as emotionally charged as they are statements about humanity, equality, and freedom. She shines brightest on the likes of the anti-war and pro-veteran storyteller "Sam Stone," written by mentor and friend, the late John Prine, and delivers one of the year's most poignant moments. Another stellar standout is the Nina Simone standard "Mississippi Goddam" where she's joined by fellow country artists Adia Victoria and Kyshona Armstrong. During this interview, we talk about They'll Never Keep Us Down, the last year--both on a macro and micro level--Waldon's Kentucky home and roots, songwriting and storytelling, country music dialogues and conversations, and much more. This episode's presenting partner is Desert Door Texas Sotol. Kelsey Waldon joins Coffee, Country & Cody on November 20, 2020 recorded via Zoom! Kelsey called in to chat about her new album, and share memories of her friendship with John Prine.
Esta vez se trataba de Southern Soul From Memphis To Muscle Shoals And More, con una selección de 10 versiones e canciones de rhythm and blues y una de cierre que suponía recordar su álbum Car Wheels on a Gravel Road gracias a “Still I Long for Your Kiss”. Even the River Runs Out of This Town".
“Bring My Flowers Now” Tanya Tucker. Compuesta por Brandi Carlile, Phil Hanseroth, Tim Hanseroth y Tanya Tucker. “Crowded Table” The Highwomen. Compuesta por Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby y Lori McKenna. “My Love Will Not Change” Aubrie Sellers featuring Steve Earle. Compuesta por Billy Burnette y Shawn Camp. “Stay High” Brittany Howard. Compuesta por Brittany Howard. “Thoughts and Prayers” Drive-By Truckers. The Dirt And The Stars. That’s How Rumors Get Started. In her new song "1988," Kelsey Waldon tells the story of the year she was born in Western Kentucky and what happened after that. What music fans know is that she brought her songs to Nashville and found community among the top emerging figure in East Nashville, including Margo Price and Erin Rae. She's just released her third album and it's special because White Noise/White Lines is a debut for John Prine's Oh Boy Records, part of a renewal of that decades old indie label. He's her songwriting hero, and their relationship is at the core of this conversation. Also in the hour, Raleigh NC writer Tommy Goldsmith talks about his new book, the definitive account of Earl Scruggs and his famous bluegrass instrumental "Foggy Mountain Breakdown."

Host Jason Wickens sits down with rising star and traditional country revivalists Kelsey Waldon. They discuss her earl influences, the value of sticking to your values. And how she draws inspiration from her deep Kentucky roots.
KELSEY WALDON hails from Monkey's Eyebrow, Kentucky. Her 2014 debut The Goldmine announced the Kentucky singer-songwriter as a disciple of Tammy and Loretta, with yearning vocals and hints of barroom twang. The Washington Post calls her "country's coolest young voice. She has been featured in Rolling Stone's Ten Artists to Watch, Relix, Billboard and iTunes 25 Artists To Make You Like Country Music list. Don Henley recently cited her as one of the new young artists that keeps him encouraged about the future of music. She just released the follow up to her critically acclaimed debut album Ive Got a Way which is already receiving high praise from critics and fans. K PHILLIPS was born in West Texas. He started playing guitar and writing songs at age 5 and began playing organ and piano in bar bands at age 14. When K was 18 both his close friend and girlfriend died in separate drowning accidents. Reeling from these losses, he made the decision to pursue his own music. On his forth-coming sophomore LP Dirty Wonder, K has truly found his voice a combination of Tom Waits' lyrical wit and Keith Richards slinky country-rock hooks joined with Ks unique, compelling vocal delivery. He and his band recently finished a ten-week tour supporting Counting Crows and Rob Thomas. WoodSongs Kid: Maisy Reliford hails from Borden, Indiana. This 13-year-old plays fiddles and sings and has released a couple of singles with a record label in Nashville.
Kelsey Waldon is a charming and heart-rending at the same time. With a twinkle in her eye she can pierce you with melancholy or shiv a rival with icy cool worthy of Loretta Lynn. The latter was more the feeling of opening song “False King” with a hook I love: “You can’t place a crown on the head of a clown and hope he turns out to be a king.” Kind of reminded me of current events. There were curtains of gorgeous steel guitar from Brett Resnick, notably the solo on set closer “All By Myself.” Also sweet was Walson’s slow rocking take on Bill Monroe’s “Travelin’ Down This Lonesome Road.” She knows lonesome and she showed it.
Boo Ray plays three tracks from Sea Of Lights and talks about growing up in the North Carolina Mountains, his hardscrabble career path, and recording on Bob Dylan’s tape deck. Lots of great music going into rotation this week. I’ve got the new Seth Walker album, the new Tim Easton album and the new Chatham County Line album. Plus I’ve got a track from the Kiefer Sutherland album. Yes, that Kiefer Sutherland! Plus more new music from Michael Rank, Eli Paperboy Reed, Kelsey Waldon, Dale Watson, and Bill Kirchen. "Boo Ray makes it to the City Of Angels (Ep315)" originated from Americana Music Show.
