As has happened quite often in the past 10 years or so, my curation of private showcase rooms at the Folk Alliance International Conference has yielded connections that provide continuing collaborations and opportunities for engagement.  Case in point… Chrislyn Lawrence and Mike “Mac” McClure also now known as the musical duo “Crow and Gazelle.”  Booking the duo at the 2002 Conference and subsequently for other listening room series in the Heartland has brought another welcome addition to my so called “Americana/Roots Music” family.  Mike McClure made his name as one of the founders of the Oklahoma Red Dirt Music Scene and producer of such Tasty  Brew Music favorites as the Turnpike Troubadours and Cross Canadian Ragweed.  Chrislyn, worked behind the scenes of that music world in supporting roles, including as a booking agent.  Circumstances kept them from pursuing a connection when they first met in 2003, but fate intervened and they've been professionally and personally a team since 2018. Their mission is to deconstruct the idea of separateness… that we humans are not separate from divinity… we are holy, everything and infinite. Enjoy this on air conversation with Crow and Gazelle in support of a Heartland appearance for the Green Guitar Folk House Listening Room Series.

In recognition of 30,000 listeners, of being both national and international, it's a thank you from me to you. A throwback to when it started 13 years ago, and all music, the music I listen to everyday, loud, my tunes, the things that get me through a day, so there's of course Lucero, both starting it and closing it, and Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson (always those 3) and Chris Stapleton, Ryan Bingham, Beth Hart, Lucinda Williams, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Reckless Kelly, Lincoln Durham, The Revivalists, The Record Company, Social Distortion and originals like Steve Earle, John Mellencamp and Bruce sneaking in and dueting with a couple of people. The Gaslight Anthem, Allison Russell, Elle King, Ashley McBryde. The music that built this podcast, and is the soundtrack of my life. For anyone who knows me, yup, the songs are picked on purpose because each of them holds a piece of me, and if you put the pieces together, there's a very true narrative in them. Red Dirt Pioneer Cody Canada Visits The Load Out

Let's start here. Cody Canada—our latest guest on The Load Out Music Podcast—is many things but he is most certainly not some radio DJ in Canada, in the event you were curious.  No, he's a pioneering figure in red dirt music and one of the more respected musicians in songwriting circles today. But many casual music fans might be unfamiliar with his name, instead knowing his work from the legendary band that he founded and led from 1994 – 2010: Cross Canadian Ragweed.  For those unfamiliar with red dirt music, it's a genre stuck between country and rock-and-roll named for the color of the Oklahoma soil. It has featured acts such as Jason Boland & the Stragglers, Stoney Larue, Charlie Robison, the Turnpike Troubadours, and the Randy Rogers Band—but has also extended to the likes of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Ray Wylie Hubbard and those who have built the Texas country-rock scene.  Canada got hooked on music when he attended a George Strait show while living in Texas as a kid. The next day he asked his parents for a guitar and it was on. In his teen years, Canada was insulated, a loner, he freely admits he didn't have many friends. His family then relocated to Yukon, Oklahoma, and his obsession with the regional outlaw country music and the Seattle sounds of Nirvana and Pearl Jam only deepened.  Music became his thing—his only thing—and in 1994, Canada put together a band with Matt Weidemann (bass), Grady Cross (guitar), and Randy Ragsdale (percussion). Cross Canadian Ragweed was born and one of their first gigs was playing a on a glorious trailer on “Czech Day” in Yukon—where they played for six hours. The band would move to Stillwater, Oklahoma, and in 1998 put out its first album, Carney. But it wasn't until Ragweed's 2002 self-titled album featuring Canada's song “17” that the band broke through. Then things really went next level in 2004 with the album Soul Gravy. It debuted at number five on Billboard's country charts—despite Canada wanting to be as far from Nashville country as he possibly can to this day—and featured the hit songs “Sick and Tired” with Lee Ann Womack and “Alabama.”  But like happens in most bands, tensions rose in Ragweed—a topic Canada does not shy away from—and the band dissolved in 2010.  In 2011, Canada and bassist Jeremy Plato formed Cody Canada & the Departed, releasing the album This Is Indian Land, a collection of covers written by Oklahoma songwriters. The band ultimately minimized to simply, The Departed, and over the past decade, Canada has moved forward with the band as well as on solo projects, writing music and reaping the rewards of a legacy he's built over 30 years. In 2020, MusicFest, the esteemed festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, paid tribute to Canada with live recorded performances from his songwriting peers, releasing the album The Years: A MusicFest Tribute to Cody Canada. Ragweed also released the reboot of “Soul Gravy” in 2022. Womack returned to sing on the new version along with performances from some key musicians who helped shape the original album including Randy Rogers and Ray Wiley Hubbard. And just recently, Canada joined longtime friends Micky and Gary Braun (of Micky and the Motorcars) on the “Acoustic Healing Tour.”  All along, in spite of being a pioneer in red dirt music, family remains the bedrock of Canada's life. He and his wife Shannon lead a School of Rock in their hometown of New Braunfels, Texas, where they are raising their children Dierks Cobain Canada (named for friend Kierks Bentley and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain) and Willy Vedder Canada (named for Willy Braun of the band Reckless Kelly and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder).   So, sit back for a great conversation on The Load Out Music Podcast with an incredibly accomplished musician and fascinating character in Cody Canada.

Ep. 26: Georgia Satellites - The Loud Crunch of Lost Rock and Roll

Georgia Satellites are owners of one fluke hit from their self-titled debut album - a Chuck Berry-ish throwback-for-the-80s radio.  One song amidst their bucket of barroom rockers.  Those songs don't come around Top 40 too often anymore.  The “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” or “Jealous Again” type of songs are outliers.  So is "Keep Your Hands to Yourself".  It rocketed all the way to #2 on the top 40 singles chart in early 1987.  Bon Jovi kept them out of the top spot with "Livin' on a Prayer". And why do I still think about the band?  They really weren't anything new.  But they did put together a flash of a career - though the band name lives on with guitarist Rick Richards - with some of the best dueling guitars of the 1980's. Again, we go back to the bar band label. It was an easy label to paste on them – to call the band an 80's version of the great 70s rockers, The Faces.  Hell, they even covered "Every Picture Tells a Story". They played rock and roll that was a blast of scraping guitars, big drums and a vibe that bridged the decades before the Black Crowes would make a similar move around 1990.  The Crowes ended up making a career last - off and on – for 25 years.  For the Georgia Satellites? They opened on a couple big tours, played a whole lot of bars and then splintered right around 1990. What is their legacy?  Why a podcast about a retro band than was not around long enough to have a second big hit?  That's what we dive into.  How the Georgia Satellites predated country radio rock that would come just a bit after their time, and end up as an influence for lots of bands - or at least make those bands believe there was a path to a crunching rock and roll career.  Bands like Cross Canadian Ragweed. The Bottle Rockets.  Blackberry Smoke. Singer Dan Baird went on to a solo career and formed a couple really good bands, including Dan Baird and Homemade Sin. One of their best tours was a triple bill in 1987 with Del Fuegos and Tom Petty. They also opened for Bob Seger in 1986 on his American Storm Tour for their first time on arena stage. Dan Baird has said that Bob made sure they had full house lights, house sound, everything the headliner would get. He knew what an opener needed.  He was one for years. Rolling Stone contributing editor Anthony DeCurtis talks about living in Atlanta in the early 1980s,  “The Satellites were like the city's house band.”  They made it into America's consciousness, at least for one song and a few years more for fans of the band.  They brought it live. Loud. Righteous. I say worth remembering one more time. They have a new - recorded in 1988 - live album out now that gives us a taste of what made them so good.  Lightnin' In A Bottle. Seems like a good time now to rewind and salute a band that was better than they ever got credit for.  Of course, if you saw them live, you knew.   I did, and I do. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Let’s talk a little bit about one of the most important instruments giving country music it’s signature sound: the pedal steel guitar. It’s a contraption with so many moving parts, whatcha-ma -call-its, and strings that even a fairly decent guitar player like myself can look at it with total wonderment and intimidation.  Very few folks actually play this instrument and even fewer can be called experts.  But on today’s show, we have one of the experts. Steve Palousek is a very accomplished steel guitar player who spent a lot of his career on the road with artists like Ray Price, Gene Watson, Gary Stewart and more. After leaving the road as a steel player he opened his own recording studio, now located in the little town of Holland, TX and has worked with many familiar names in Red Dirt and Texas Country including, Cross Canadian Ragweed, LeeAnn Womack, Mike McClure and others, including yours truly. To contact Steve about recording at his studio or having him add some steel to your tracks, email him at:  spalousek@yahoo.com So here we go with episode #106 of the Troubadour with this week’s guest,  steel guitar hero and recording studio owner, Steve Palousek. The Years: A Musicfest Tribute to Cody Canada and the Music of Cross Canadian Ragweed. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Today’s episode features a true Texas Songwriting Legend: Ray Wylie Hubbard. For those who follow Texas and Red Dirt Music you are almost certainly familiar with Ray.  He’s a legend in the scene and tons of artists have covered his material.  Many artists look at their chance just to co-write with Ray as a pinnacle in their careers. Known for his bar-room sing-along anthem, Red Neck Mother, Ray started gaining notoriety in the 70’s when Jerry Jeff Walker made the tune a main-stay for dark, smoky honky-tonks.  Then, over the years he also became known for penning other great signature songs like “Snake Farm”, recorded by podcast alum Paul Thorn, as well as “I Wanna Rock n Roll” recorded by Red Dirt legends in their own right, Cross Canadian Ragweed. One of my favorite songs that pays homage to Ray is the song “Good One Comin On” recorded by Blackberry Smoke and Trent Wilmon, and written by David Lee Murphy, Gary Nicholson, and Lee Roy Parnell. We get into Ray’s backstory in the episode and he takes us all the way from his start during the Cowboy/Hippie movement in Austin revolving around the Armidillo World Headquarters, us to his most recent projects featuring performances with names like Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Don Was, Chris Robinson and Ashley McBryde. If you haven’t checked out the YouTube video of the song “Bad Trick” here’s the LINK. I know Carly and I were both honored to have this chance to interview Ray. So here we go with episode #80 of The Troubadour featuring our conversation with Ray Wylie Hubbard. In this episode, Matt and Mark sit down with singer/songwriter Scott Evans. They talk about his days with his self proclaimed ‘redneck hippie jam band’ Medicine Show, and their involvement in the red dirt movement in Stillwater, OK. He also reflects on how a couple of his songs ended up on Cross Canadian Ragweed albums. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

In the late 90’s and early 2000’s as Red Dirt and Texas Country Music was making it’s way north into my home state of Kansas some of the first bands I saw live were those like The Great Divide, Jason Boland & The Stragglers and Cross Canadian Ragweed.  Through those 3 bands, me and my cohorts were gradually introduced to many of the other great acts coming out of that scene as the movement was really starting to gain some steam. Therefore, I assume that my first experience with becoming familiar with the Austin band, Reckless Kelly was much like many of you.  Ragweed’s live show at that time almost always included the Reckless Kelly tune, “Crazy Eddie’s Last Hurrah”, which became known as a song that would bring the house down during Ragweed’s shows. As I started digging in to Reckless Kelly I found several other of their songs were also simply gems.  A couple of my own other personal favorites from the early Reckless days were “Hey Say May” and “Wild Western Windblown Band”. As Reckless Kelly’s career progressed, they solidified themselves as one of the most respected bands in the scene.  Their prowess as a group was recognized with Grammy nominations and later a Grammy win for their 2013 album “Long Night Moon.” Reckless Kelly is still releasing great stuff and in May, they will be releasing another 2- album project that, as you’ll hear in this interview with Willy Braun, he feels it’s their best yet. This episode with Willy is great and here’s a YouTube LINK to the humorous story we visit with Willy about including a streaker across the stage during a Robert Earl Keen show.  If you haven’t already seen this, it’s simply MUST WATCH content. So, without further ado, here comes Episode #70 of The Troubadour Podcast featuring Reckless Kelly front man, Willy Braun.  Enjoy! Americana, for all intensive purposes, is roots based music. Sounds, songs, and stories are as much a part of the region as they are apart of the artist. Although the Americana generally adopts regional sounds and sub-genres and provides a platform with a wider national and international reach, we have to wonder what we as listeners might be losing when not defining a song or a band by where it/they comes from. Geographically where does Americana start and better yet.. where does it end?  Cody Canada, formerly of "Cross Canadian Ragweed" and currently of his new band Cody Canada & The Departed"- is a poster-child for the sub-genre known as Red Dirt Country. A form of music developed between Oklahoma and Texas that generally mixes rock and roll-based sound with country-style songwriting. With a style of music that's pretty well-defined as such, does it count as Americana? On Americana Podcast: The 51st State, Canada discusses regionality, influences and his newest work in music education on the first ever live episode- recorded at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, TX.

THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

I’ve got to be totally honest here:  I’m not always familiar with every individual artist and songwriter we have an opportunity to visit with on the podcast.  I quit touring over two years ago, and even by that time of my career as an “entertainer” had morphed into mainly playing private parties and small bars in Kansas and Nebraska when the money was right.  I wasn’t trying to stay relevant or even keep tabs on which artists were anymore…  Let’s just say I wasn’t “up” on most of the new artists in the Red Dirt or Texas Country scene.  Frankly, by that time my college days and “good times” were already WAY over.  The artists that had shaped my view of Texas Country and Red Dirt like The Great Divide, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Cooder Graw had already all broke up…Pat Green et al were still doing their thing, but their music hit me differently in my late 30’s and as a husband & father than it did when I was a 20 year old college kid. So, when Carly told me we’d be doing an interview with George Ducas I said “Uh… OK.”  The name sounded vaguely familiar but I just couldn’t place it so I did what all normal folks do in this day and age:  I googled him and BAM!!!! I quickly realized that this was the George Ducas that had a hit song in 1995 called “Lipstick Promises” that I clearly remember singing in the tractor while I was in high school!!!!! Holy smokes did that bring back a quick flood of memories...  When I was lucky enough to be in a tractor that had a working radio, it was cranked to a station I could barely pick up from north central KS.  I can’t remember the call letters or the frequency but it was called “The Hit Kicker” and was out of Lincoln, NE.  That station would play pretty much a constant loop of the top 25 songs on country radio at the time and you could count on songs in the top ten multiple times each day…and so, I was probably raking hay when I got my first taste of George Ducas through “Lipstick Promises”. As I did more research on George’s career, I learned that he had been on the same label as Garth.  Well, you can do your own math to figure out who’s gonna get the most attention from the powers that be if you are on the same label as His Garthness.  So, George’s career as an artist started to simmer, BUT his career as a songwriter started gaining more steam. Fan’s of the podcast would probably be kinda surprised to find out that George Ducas is the songwriter on several Red Dirt and Texas Country songs including Randy Rogers Band’s “Kiss Me In The Dark”, Eli Young Band’s “Always the Love Songs” AND one of my personal favorites, “Just Call Me Lonesome” that he co-wrote with Radney Foster. George also has co-writing credit on the Garth Brooks and George Jones song “BEER RUN”.  We had a good visit over this version of the song compared to Todd Snider’s “BEER RUN” and heard some details about both songs that I don’t think ANYONE has ever heard before this interview.  It’s definitely a part of this episode you won’t want to miss. To cut to the chase, George Ducas is back with some new music and a project called “Yellow Rose Motel” which you can check out HERE.  I usually have to hear something a couple times to know if I dig it or not….NOT ON THIS PROJECT!  I am super impressed with this stuff!  Damn good songwriting and production.  George is releasing the project in Volumes.  Three song groupings have made up Volume 1, 2, and 3 with the final 3 songs coming soon.  The first song I heard off this project is called “Eastwood”  and is simply a great song IMO.  I don’t know what else to say….  I dig the heck out of it and George’s delivery on the song.  You’ve GOT to go listen to it!  Another song which I’m really loving from the project is called “Country Badass” which is a nice shot taken at the wannabes and cracks me up. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed our interview with George and I think you’ll find it a good listen.  AND THE MUSIC!  Please check it out because I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.  Check out all things George Ducas by clicking HERE! THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Mike McClure and I met for the first time in the Fall of 1999 while I was still in college in Manhattan, KS and he was still fronting The Great Divide (the first time).  Along with working towards my degree, I was trying to figure out how to become a songwriter and musician, and he was a guy doing just that.  He graciously took time to visit with me and let me pick his brain every time they came through town as I slowly built my own little career in music.  He was also gracious enough to make a cameo appearance on my first record on a song I’d written called “Til I Find Myself”.  In the years to follow, I meandered my way through 15 years of gigs, mostly as a solo artist, and Mike’s career evolved into parting ways with The Great Divide, touring with his own band, becoming a producer/engineer and eventually starting his own recording studio. After having not spoken to Mike in over ten years, it was really great to get to catch up with him through the podcast and bring the listeners the whole conversation.  In this episode we touch on Mike’s impact on the scene, not only as an artist and songwriter, but also as a producer. He recounts many good stories from his career in this episode including getting songwriting advice from Guy Clark, having a song cut by Garth Brooks, producing records from Red Dirt and Texas Country staple acts like Cross Canadian Ragweed, Turnpike Troubadours and more. If this episode affects you like it did me, you’ll find yourself digging through some old CDs from your college days!  Enjoy! http://mikemcclureband.com/ Don’t forget about the upcoming 610 Music Festival.  For more information you can go to: 610 Music Festival on Facebook.  For tickets click HERE! THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

At the ripe old age of twenty-six, Texas and Americana Music Rock and Roller, Austin Meade, is carving out his own niche in the independent music scene. Austin's latest record, "Waves" has all the vibe, feel and look of 1970s, all the way down to the look of the front-man.   Despite his relatively young age, Austin has four records under his belt and is quickly solidifying himself as an authentic artist that's here to stay. In this interview we learn how Austin's father, a Baptist preacher, was a fan of some 70's greats including Styx and .38 Special which bled over into Austin's taste in music and is partially responsible for the direction he's taken with his own music. While attending college in College Station, Texas, Austin was introduced to Texas Country and Red Dirt Music along with the artists making up the genre.  For a love of music, drums and guitar, Austin soon found himself trying to subtly introduce himself to folks like William Clark Green, Randy Rogers and Cross Canadian Ragweed frontman, Cody Canada. By developing these relationships with these type of artists, Austin has gained the respect of many of his peers in the music business; so much so that Austin now teaches guitar for Cody Canada at the local School of Rock for youngsters. We expect to see great things in the future out of this genuine, hard-working rocker.   Make sure and check out his new album "Waves" by visiting www.austinmeade.com   www.thetroubadourpodcast.com CHECK OUT THE TROUBADOUR ON THESE PLATFORMS: iTunes Stitcher Spotify

December 8th, 2004, I was living in Stillwater, Oklahoma when I heard the news that Darrell Abbott had been shot on stage in Columbus, OH while performing with Damageplan. I have been a Pantera & Darrell Abbott fan for as long as I can remember. Vulgar Display of Power was the first Pantera record I ever purchased & I was hooked from then on. To me, there was no one like Darrell, he was the consummate performer as well as being life of the party, & a really friendly person. I’ve always wanted to have a discussion with Oklahoma musicians about the influence that Dime had on them. I’ve sat down with Provo from Everybody Panic, Vinny from Trainreck, Zain from Locust Grove, Cameron Conyer from the Far Beyond The Grave Pantera Tribtue, and Cody Canada from The Departed even called in to talk about the Cross Canadian Ragweed song “Dimebag” that he co-wrote with Mike McClure. If you are a Pantera fan at all, you will enjoy hearing the stories from these Oklahoma Musicians… - Jay Ramone

Chris Colston is an up-and-coming artist from Texas who is following in the footsteps of artists like Parker McCollum and Koe Wetzel in gaining national notoriety. Chris joins Country Music Made Me to talk about the moments that led to his passion for chasing a career in music, like jamming with his friends at the local church, performing on the Texas Opry Circuit, earning a residency at the Republic Icehouse in Tyler Texas, and releasing his first album "Guitar Playin' Outlaw". Chris and Brendan talk about how important the support of the close knit community within the Red Dirt music scene has been, what it's been like playing with and getting to know his musical idols like Randy Rogers, Codey Canada, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Josh Abbot, William Clark Green and Stoney LaRue, and why things may have been much different if he hadn't met fellow musician Koe Wetzel early in his journey. Chris explains the process of entering the Nashville scene from Texas, what it's been like transitioning to the world of co-writing rather than always writing by himself, and the goals he has for his career outside of his home state. Finally, Chris talks about his new album "Boy Like Me" and how he hopes to develop as a songwriter and eventually co-write every track he records.
