Chris Black has gone from managing a pop-punk band to becoming a fashion-world insider, podcast host, and brand consultant for labels like J. Crew and Thom Browne. This week, Ben and Max bring on the How Long Gone co-host to talk about building a cult hit podcast, the surprising comeback of media gatekeepers in 2025, and why he still believes in the power of institutions – including a high-production video version of How Long Gone. Also: his thoughts on Substack fatigue — and what it was like to interview the guitarist of the Smiths. Chris Black is a tastemaker, writer, consultant, and host of How Long Gone podcast. Ty & Eric quiz him on his go-to Subway order, avoiding the post-sandwich hand stench, the allure of the footlong cookie, why Cactus Club is poppin' off, his hatred for Montreal, doing a smell check on the NYC apothecary district, rum-running canned cold brew, Jimmy Johns' political leanings, gatekeeping bibimbap, the vibe shift from snowboarding to skiing, and Chris's signature twist on the cortado. If you're struggling, consider therapy with our sponsor. We welcome you back to the main (unhinged) content of your favorite podcasters favorite podcast with this banger of an episode where we touch on topics ranging from RFK insisting autists can't play baseball to two autists talking about their favorite shitty iPhone games. In between, we cover such topics as How Long Gone visiting Wisconsin, proper burger accoutrements, Glen Powell, mayo, and have an extended debate about the merits of the NBA compared to college basketball.
Jason Stewart is a DJ (playing as Them Jeans) and cohost of How Long Gone, a podcast that dips in and out of the food world with surprising and entertaining frequency. It was so great to have Jason back on the show to talk about where he's been dining out in Los Angeles and New York, his home cooking stylings, and some of his recent writing for TASTE. Also on the show we have a great conversation with Tejal Rao, a critic at large for the Food section of The New York Times. Tejal is based in Los Angeles and wrote a terrific story about Pasadena's Panda Inn, the parent restaurant of Panda Express. We talk about the restaurant's legacy while digging into some of Tejal's recent favorite Los Angeles restaurants.Do you enjoy This Is TASTE? Drop us a review on Apple, or star us on Spotify. This week, we discuss Alex's apartment management being dramatic about the cold, American Prestige's episode on the history of Christmas and how we've lost the plot, How Long Gone bragging about not taking a break for the holidays, what we did to ring in the new year, the Packers' woes, and much more.
This is it! The last of the bonus episodes and the last of "Season One." 3 years later, what a trip. To round out these bonuses I've got a great guest to talk about the art of editing podcasts. Jason Stewart (aka DJ Them Jeans) is the co-host and editor of the podcast How Long Gone, which, along with co-host Chris Black, has released three hour-long episodes a week for the last four years, covering all things culture, fashion and entertainment. Prior to How Long Gone he was also the host & editor of two other podcasts, Tall Tales and The Stew, so he's really a podcast editing veteran. How Long Gone has risen to the top of the podcast charts because of the funny fast-paced conversations of Jason & Chris and their guests, and a lot of that has to do with Jason's editing style which is brisk, but not noticeable. The result is 700+ episodes of sharp-witted dialogue that makes the listener wish that they were also in the conversation. The conversations don't drag on, they whiz by, and some of my favorite parts are the songs he chooses to end each episode on as well as where and how he places their ad reads, which we get into a little bit in this episode (cause that's all editing, baby!) Thanks again, everyone, for listening and supporting this podcast. It's been a really great experience and I'm looking forward to Season Two! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cuttingclass/support

First off, if you don't want to hear about Alex's personal life and adventures, skip ahead approximately 30 mins into this ep. If you stick around, you will hear him evangelize about upstate New York and recount all the things he did and ate. After that, we get into the more traditional contents of the pod, covering topics ranging from podcasts (No Gods, No Mayors, How Long Gone, Podcast), sports (Wisconsin football, WNBA playoffs, who Alex is rooting for in the MLB postseason), politics (4 more years of Trump or 4 more years of Brewers heartbreak, the Dems campaigning in Wisconsin), and more. Editors note: I was completely off base on our discussion of Fivio Foreign, recollecting a song by Drake not Kanye, and not even Fivio's actual verse on said song, smh.

As summer hits high season and the global smart set decamps to Martha's Vineyard, the Amalfi Coast, or Jeff Bezos's yacht, Harrison Vail reveals what your media-branded canvas tote bag (The Paris Review? A24? How Long Gone?) says about you. Then we have a terrific story courtesy of Alan Cowell, who tells us about a rather curious distinction he holds: in particular, he is the last correspondent to file a war-zone dispatch via carrier pigeon. This week, we cover everything from Simon Doonan on How Long Gone, the connection between affordable living and thriving art scenes, Twitter fatigue in these trying times, the evolution of rap beefs and the fallout from the nuclear Drake vs Kendrick back and forth, Jason stealing our ironing talk bit, the Podcast (Deluxe) edited versions of TTPD (is it actually good?), the potential songs of the summer, and the ongoing trend of terrible reffing in the NBA playoffs.
This week's Talkhouse Podcast is actually taken from a conversation that served as the online launch party for the second issue of our print ‘zine, The Talkhouse Reader, which was lovingly put together by Talkhouse music editor Annie Fell. The issue, which you can order at store.talkhouse.com explores the intersection of food and music, so naturally this episode does as well. Our guests are Jason Stewart and Rostam. Stewart is, along with Chris Black, the host of the popular podcast How Long Gone, in which the two discuss pop culture, fashion, and whatever else happens to come to mind, often with great guests—recent ones include Jenny Lewis, Waxahatchee, and Isaac Brock—but frequently just the two of them gabbing like better-read versions of your hippest friends. They're part of the fabulous Talkhouse Podcast Network, and you can catch the How Long Gone guys live this June if you're lucky enough to live in one of the cities they'll be visiting. Tour dates and their deep catalog of episodes can be found on their site. Today's other guest is Rostam, who's best known as a co-founder of Vampire Weekend and co-architect of that band's sound. Rostam left Vampire Weekend a few years ago to pursue solo and production work, and he's kept plenty busy. He made a great record with Hamilton Leithauser of the Walkmen as well as a fully solo record called Changephobia—you may have heard him on the Talkhouse Podcast talking about it with Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast. He's released a few standalone songs recently as well, and as always he's a thoughtful conversationalist with something interesting to say. Since this conversation is focused largely on food, you can expect to hear about Rostam's egg habits, a killer salmon recipe, and some talk about Rostam's mom, who's a well known chef of Persian food who once went toe-to-toe with Martha Stewart. Enjoy, and please check out the Talkhouse Reader issue two at store.talkhouse.com. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jason Stewart and Rostam for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was put together by Annie Fell and edited by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

As writer and podcast host Chris Black tells it, he sits at the heart of American culture. “The bridge between the high and the low; the very high and the very low.” This is a very good—and often entertaining—place to live, and in this episode we get to know Chris a bit better through his particular takes on restaurant culture, home cooking, cookbooks, and the two cities he spends the most time in: New York and Los Angeles. Well, just like every other podcast on this planet, we had to do it. We talked about T-Swift x T-Kelce, but we also talked about Hell of Presidents, How Long Gone, Nick witnessing the Packers' legendary 4Q comeback, socially acceptable sports gear, Fantasy Football strategizing, the Senate dress code, Donald Trump's deteriorating mental status as he forgoes the debates, another possible govt. shutdown, and the WGA deal.
We're finally guest-free after three straight weeks and how did we celebrate? By losing the initial 2-hr recording of this episode. So this is take two, and we talk about podcast recording apps, Alex's big-ticket birthday dinner, How Long Gone, Olivia Rodrigo, Zach Bryan, and more.
We went back to our roots this week with some very pod heavy content, discussing some big reunions of regular guests with Emily Oberg joining Throwing Fits for the first time after going on Failing Upwards thrice, and Adam Friesland joining the Chapo Trap House boys for the first time since they went Hollywood. We also talk about American Prestige and a taste of How Long Gone, while doing A POD review for the second consecutive week, this time with Nick panning The Pitchfork Review Podcast. Other miscellaneous topics we got into included the Johnny Football doc, the Hawaii fire, the "that MF ain't real" chick's "explanation" video, and copping jawnz for Montana.
We're back with another solo pod! In this episode we discuss How Long Gone live at the Great Hall, after party at Bar Bowie, Grape Witches, secret patios, Milk Glass, Josh's old party 'Rare Shakas', sand boarding, Ossington yuppies, 'doing it for the content', Future Bistro, 'Girl Dinner', tall kings, The Garrison at 4am, the right time to go home, The Keg commercial update, the 'Bourne' movies, 'Good Will Hunting', 'How to with John Wilson', Travis Scott's new album 'UTOPIA', Strange Ranger, our upcoming party and more! This week, we continue to struggle with our new concept of segments, producing two roughly 40 min halves where we talk about some of the same concepts and including sports and How Long Gone podcast guests. In the first half, we get more specifically into a rousing debate over the spectrum of quality in restaurants and the value of going to many new restaurants vs the same one many times. In the second half, we test out our new "podcast review" segment, where Alex tells of two podcasts he binged in the "slow pod week" produced by the holiday week, Serial Season 2 featuring the Bowe Bergdahl case mentioned on the Nate pod, and Who Shat on the Floor at My Wedding, an irreverent COVID-lockdown-era true crime pod "investigating" the titular question.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got the songwriters behind some of the most tuneful tunes in indie-rock, one with a couple of decades under his belt, the other two relatively newer to the game: A.C. Newman along with Liz Stokes and Jonathan Pearce. Stokes and Pearce are the core of the New Zealand band The Beths; she sings and plays guitar, he plays guitar and engineers their fabulous records. Their third and latest, Expert in a Dying Field, was one of 2022's best—and you don't have to take my word for it, it made tons of those best-of-the-year lists. Stokes is a fabulous lyricist and expressive singer; she's one of those people whose semi-deadpan actually says quite a lot. The songs are melancholy and spunky, and sort of in the tradition of some great late-90s/early aughts indie-rock, like Superchunk or Rilo Kiley. Maybe it's no surprise that some big bands that broke out in that era, like Death Cab for Cutie and The National, have taken the Beths out on tour. Check out the title track from Expert in a Dying Field right here, and catch the Beths on tour all over the world this summer. Another Beths admirer who got his start in the early aughts is A.C. Newman, who's best known as the singer and chief songwriter for the New Pornographers. That Canadian band started out as a sort of supergroup consisting of Newman and Neko Case alongside Dan Bejar and John Collins of Destroyer, but over the years it has really become a vehicle for Newman's incredibly melodic songs. The band is on tour now behind their ninth album, the slightly mellower though no less engaging Continue As A Guest, and yes, both the current live lineup and the record still feature Neko Case—in the past she's had to split time with her vibrant solo career. Check out “Really Really Light,” from Continue as a Guest. In this conversation, Newman, Stokes, and Pearce—who were only admirers beforehand, not yet acquaintances—talk about the early days of these things called websites, blowing your life savings to go on tour, government arts grants that help bands do bigger things, and when doing it yourself just becomes too tough. Also, Newman gives some solid life and career advice: “Just do what you think is cool.” Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to A.C. Newman, Liz Stokes, and Jonathan Pearce for chatting. Raw and uncut again this week, just like we expect the hems to be at Skateboard P's Louis Vuitton. In addition to talking about the newest man taking creative helm at LV Men's, we discuss shoddily put together airplanes from both the Nazi and USSR regimes (Lions Led By Donkeys), a one-year look back at Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the Biden admin making a questionable walk-back of its nomination to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights over calling Israel an apartheid state (American Prestige). Once we get that heavier stuff out of the way, we use some random topics to transition into a discussion on recent episodes of How Long Gone and Throwing Fits, and we finally address the whole thing with the "Big Red Boots". --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
This week, we start out with a little political and pop culture news, including the new pathological liar in congress and the viral drink promoted by Tom Hanks on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. We then get into pod discussion, debating the science of denim crotch blowouts as prompted by How Long Gone's interview with King Tuff, discuss how boring the Throwing Fits interview with Hasan Piker was, and critique the peculiar decision by Louis Vuitton to tap Kidsuper to co-design their latest menswear collection, before getting to some more serious coverage from Chapo Trap House on the atrocities and controversies coming out of the new Israeli government, and from Hard Fork about the ongoing debacle that is Elon Musk/Twitter/Tesla. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Cocktails, anyone? It's time to think outside the glass as we welcome podcast impresario Jason Stewart of How Long Gone, aka DJ Them Jeans, for a boozy ride down libations lane. The gals shake up four unique creations, each representing a different era in modern mixology—from the unnaturally sweet sensations of the early 2000's, to the maple-bacon masculinity of the mid 2010s—as we trace Jason's journey from Last Night's Party mainstay to respectable graduate of Hendrick's U. From the feminine mystique of a lemon drop to the subtle refinement of a cynar negroni, Jason's in-home sauna, Steven's love of French Touch and everyone's latent bisexuality, this is one very happy hour. Our friend and host of the podcast Are We On Air? had us on as a guest recently to talk about How Long Gone, and the music that shaped us growing up. It's a fun listen with tons of music so we decided to add it to the feed. Here's Arman's intro for the episode: Turn on, tune in, drop out! CHRIS BLACK and JASON STEWART join Arman for a little tête-à-tête that will feel like time is slipping like sand through an hourglass. Tuning in from the leafy suburbs of Glendale, the boys use their well-honed cultural commentary skills to go through their character-defining musical choices. But make no mistake: in classic HOW LONG GONE fashion, each choice is infused with the nonchalant ease that CHRIS and JASON have already accustomed us to. Be it JASON making the case on the advantages of exclusivity - "When it's so homogeneous, there's so little to clamp on to, that it identifies you with no identity" - or CHRIS reflecting on how the evolution of music distribution shapes music fandom and the underlying culture that stems from it - "Today's low barrier of entry to music access changes the perception, the fandom and the tribes that genres create" -, CHRIS and JASON leave no question unattended. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/howlonggone/support

A few weeks back I recommended the book Everything Now: Lessons from the City-State of Los Angeles by Rosecrans Baldwin for a summer reading list. Having been an admirer of Rosecrans’ writing (especially in his newsletter) I was eager to chat with him about the book on the podcast. He graciously drove across town and we had a great chat in my backyard. We spoke about the many great stories in the book, life in Southern California and he even opened up about his relationship with the brand Patagonia. “What if I hate Los Angeles? Why should I read this book.” That’s the big question for Rosecrans. It’s something we speak about in the podcast but it is worth pointing out again here. If you love L.A. this is a good book for you. If you hate it — there’s likely something for you too. If you are interested in the human stories that bring a place to life then you will enjoy it. All of this thinking about Los Angeles makes me revisit the ongoing N.Y. vs L.A. debate. So much is said about these two cities but it doesn’t seem like many people truly understand either place all that well — myself included. I’ve got a connection to each city, but I’m not really from either and don’t think I’ll ever consider myself a New Yorker or an Angeleno. I only think I know them well enough to know that I’ve only scratched the surface. The book reinforces this theory. One fact I heard during the pandemic about the size of L.A. surprised me. If Los Angeles County was a state it would rank 8th in terms of population. That statistic helped illustrate in my mind just how big L.A. is and how it is often too easily distilled down to one industry or one frequently visited part of town. Everything Now helps to open up these places, and to help us all better understand the people who give them life. The book is unlike what one might expect from a story about a city, no less a story about L.A., but that is one of the reasons it’s so enjoyable. It’s unexpected in a lot of ways, and like L.A., it’s not as easy to characterize as you might think. Hope you enjoy our conversation. Some show notes are below. The fellas secure a busted-ass mic just in time to record with one of podcasting's tallest and most seasoned players, Jason Stewart aka @themjeans — co-host of the “bi-coastal elite” show How Long Gone — while on his NYC check in. Learn from the man who taught Zac Efron how to DJ as he sits down with the boys for an educational session in which the podcasting big dog drops his Avène-inclusive skincare regimen while shelling out advice for universe building in entertainment and branding. Listen to Emilio and Evan mine Jason for intel on intermittent fasting, the Equinox steam room, GOSHI loofahs, nailing your second act and ignoring the haters. Despite what the title may suggest, this episode has absolutely nothing to do with Sunday Riley's cult-favorite product. It has everything to do with Jason's age-defying genetic makeup. One on one pod today, Chris and Jason chat about rationing sauce, boba, Chris’ searing hate of cherry tomatoes, Ksubi jeans, workshopping TJ’s sandwich concept, an in-depth breakdown of an involved veggie burger recipe, Olivia Rodrigo on SNL, Chris Black finally visits Pickle Rick for a marathon bodywork session, the healing properties of Sweetgreen’s miso dressing, and in maybe our worst bit to date, we develop the next DTC product under the Gone by How Long Gone umbrella. twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/howlonggone/support
The core is strong in this one. I have Jason Stewart, one of the co-hosts from the prolific podcast How Long Gone. He also is a DJ operating under the moniker of "Them Jeans" as well as a man in the culinary scene working with a ton of different brands. In short, he's a cool dude. What makes him even cooler is our shared history within the OC hardcore scene and the deep threads that he ties back to being exposed to the DIY music community. We discuss the OC core, Del Taco marketing and his life as a DJ. A lot of joking in this particular episode but we go places. Enjoy!
