Best known as the frontman of North Carolina alt-country outfit American Aquarium, singer/songwriter B.J. Barham has spent much of his career delivering rugged, earthy roots rock in the vein of Whiskeytown and Drive-By Truckers. A native of Reidsville, North Carolina, Barham formed the group in 2005 and, over the course of a decade, built American Aquarium's reputation from regional up-and-comers to acclaimed, internationally recognized act thanks to records like 2012's Jason Isbell-produced Burn. Flicker. Die. and 2015's Wolves. Inspired by the November 2015 terrorist attacks at a Parisian nightclub, Barham -- who was, at the time, on tour in nearby Belgium -- quickly wrote a new batch of acoustic-led songs that would eventually become Rockingham, his solo debut. In early 2016, with co-producer Bradley Cook, he and a handpicked crew of musicians recorded the new material in a couple of marathon sessions. The album was released later that year, earning positive reviews. This week, we're back for the fall season with the first face-to-face taping in nearly two years. I was able to catch up with the fearless deep-voiced frontman BJ Barham of North Carolina roots-rock favorites American Aquarium, in the front bar of The Troubadour in LA as his tour was passing through.  American Aquarium's rawly personal new LP Chicamacomico dropped earlier this year and focuses on the twin losses of BJ's mother and grandmother - as well as a dark point in his own marriage when he and his wife lost a child. He was already building a room for the little one during the pregnancy when everything changed. While fans have been following the band as a roaring country-tinged rock outfit since they formed in Raleigh around 2006 (the masterful Jason Isbell-produced Burn.Flicker.Die put them on the map right as they thought they would quit), it's with Barham's more poetic, stripped down offerings like 2020's Lamentations and his searing solo work Rockingham that he is breaking new ground. Barham isn't shy about processing his adoration for The Boss as the preeminent living rock-n-roll intellectual king and there are cuts off the new LP like “The Things We Lost Along The Way” that feel like they could have been recorded in that haunted place alongside Nebraska or Darkness on the Edge of Town.  As a new dad myself who just experienced my wife going through a terrifying birth, BJ's songs hit me a little harder these days. I can't think of a country artist today with as big a following from North Carolina to Texas who would center the title track of his record around the unspoken tragedy of a late miscarriage, but Barham pulls it off with a remarkable sensitivity. Like Isbell, Barham notes that his career really began when he got sober and could finally examine the dark corners of his history, his relationships and the fractured history of the south he grew up in. Though hard to say, naming a record about working through deep loss Chicamacomico makes all the sense in the world. It's a real place of course, a life-saving station built in 1874 on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and a beach area where BJ and his wife tried to go to blow off steam and forget their sorrows. Now a proud dad to a little daughter (see the cheerful country banger “Little Things”) Barham has learned that in the end, being a father and husband first doesn't make him less of a hard-working, deep-thinking artist. To paraphrase BJ Barham, Michael McDermott has come out of the darkness to be the light. His illustrious career goes back to the late 80s. For many folks he is the best songwriter you've never heard of. For others he is the voice of multiple generations. His most recent record St. Paul's Boulevard is my favorite thing he has done. McDermott builds a world and trusts himself and his collaborators to guide but not lead the listener. It's an immersive experience much like this conversation with the man himself.

Ten years ago BJ Barham and his band American Aquarium were about to call it quits. They'd been touring nationally at small clubs and had seemingly plateaued in their growth as a band. They'd written some new tunes and decided to hop into a studio with Jason Isbell to record what they thought would be their swan song album, Burn. Flicker. Die. It was not. As BJ describes in this Songfacts Podcast episode, things changed after that album. When I press him on what he thinks happened, he points to writing songs for himself rather than trying to create something he thought listeners might want. Whether walking across a parking lot lost in thought, responding to critics on social media, sitting down for an interview after a soundcheck, doing a meet-and-greet with fans, joyfully gliding across the stage with his acoustic guitar, or thrusting his head towards a microphone and belting out deeply personal and introspective lyrics with unbridled ferocity – that intensity is unquestionably a part of Barham's spirit and colors everything he does. In the latest episode of The Load Out Music Podcast, I speak with Barham for what was perhaps one of the most raw and candid conversations of our first two seasons. American Aquarium frontman BJ Barham talks about what it takes to clear a career-high bar as he did on the band's new Lamentations LP. Hosted by music journalist Kelly McCartney.

Con su más reciente álbum, Early Morning Rain, Steve Forbert ha querido que la gente renueve su aprecio por la artesanía musical que suponen las 11 canciones seleccionadas por el artista de Mississippi, encuadradas en el folk y el rock y con una exquisita diversidad. Desde un trovador como Gordon Lightfoot, de quien ha tomado el nombre genérico del álbum, hasta Elton John, pasando por Danny O’Keefe, los Kinks o la sorpresa de escuchar “Box oF Rain” que compusieron Phil Lesh y Robert Hunter para el colosal American Beauty de Grateful Dead hace medio siglo, Steve Forbert se recrea en canciones que han sido emblema de varias generaciones. Todo con toques acústicos y un ambiente placentero y relajado. Hablan de su último álbum, el octavo de su carrera, como de una obra maestra del gótico sureño. Se trata de Caleb Caudle y su Better Hurry Up, un trabajo que se generó en la mítica Cash Cabin tres días después de mudarse a Nashville el pasado año desde su natal Carolina del Norte. Un artista que como él creció en las estribaciones de los Apalaches y que siempre ha tenido a Leon Russell, J.J. Cale, Little Feat o The Band como referentes, tenía que acogerse a músicos que coincidieran con sus raíces. De esta forma, en este octavo álbum de Caudle han coincidido el productor John Jackson y Elizabeth Cook, John Paul White, Courtney Marie Andrews o Gary Louris. Aquellas sesiones han resultado perfectas para que las canciones se oscurezcan, se empapen a veces de whisky y resistan un viaje por carreteras secundarias a través del corazón de su país en estos tiempos. “Front Porch” es contundente a pesar de lo sutil de su bella melodía. La capacidad de Daniel Romano para crear está por encima de toda duda y la de conformar todo ello en nuevas grabaciones supera lo esperado. Su más reciente entrega supone el cuarto álbum del artista canadiense en lo que llevamos de año 2020, todos ellos con una calidad suprema. Se trata de Content to Point the Way, grabado con The Outfit, su banda de acompañamiento, con un regreso de tintes sentimentales y decididos al country, destacando sobre una selección magnífica “Diamonds And Dogs”, con Gram Parsons y Emmylou Harris en el horizonte gracias a la intervención vocal de Julianna Riolino con una atmósfera llena de melancolía. Dentro de poco menos de un mes estará publicado Mountain Standard Time, el nuevo proyecto de Chris Roberts, uno de los más refutados miembros de la comunidad musical de Nashville, desde sus facetas de compositor, vocalista y productor. Ha sido responsable de musicales, autor de canciones de éxito, colaborador con a artistas de prestigio e incluso se ha aventurado en la creación de bandas sonoras cinematográficas. Pero el bluegrass es una de sus debilidades y para este nuevo álbum vez ha querido llevar a ese terreno canciones tan deliciosas como “Right On Time”, cuya composición ha compartido con Mike Reid. Una guitarra acústica, réplica de la legendaria Martin de Clarence White que heredó el enorme Tony Rice, mandolina y mandocello, dobro, banjo, guitarra barítono de 8 cuerdas y contrabajo... todo ello puesto en manos de Ramón Arroyo, que ha incorporado su voz, pocas veces escuchada, para rendir homenaje a John Prine con esta versión de “Paradise”, que el artista recientemente desaparecido compuso para su padre y formó parte de su álbum de debut en 1971. Ramón Arroyo, al que casi todo el mundo conoce como miembro de Los Secretos, pero que tiene una larga andadura en proyectos muy diversos, desde aquellos legendarios Flying Gallardos, pasando por multitud de colaboraciones y apariciones en directo, hasta llegar a Roadrunners junto a su gran amigo Jeff Espinoza. Ojalá que Ramón se anime definitivamente a explorar esos caminos como solista aunque, seguro, estará rodeado de todos esos amigos a los que ha acompañado tantas veces. Esta vez nuestro viaje sonoro nos lleva hasta Winchester, en Virginia, para encontrarnos con Gina Furtado, que conformó su propia aventura tras dejar a Chris Jones & The Night Drivers. Gina, que era conocida como Gina Clowes, decidió recuperar su apellido de soltera y fundó The Gina Furtado Project. Sus formas combinan el bluegrass y el swing, con su experiencia como banjista y la incorporación de su hermana, Malia Furtado al violín, Drew Matulich en la guitarra y Max Johnson al contrabajo. “The Things I Saw” tiene que ver con su infancia en las orillas del río Shenandoah. Host, Robert Earl Keen speaks with frontman and lyricist BJ Barham of the band American Aquarium. BJ Barham, originally from Rockingham North Carolina, started American Aquarium in 2006. Despite going through a number of members, Barham has stuck with the band through and through acting as the front man and primary lyricist throughout its changes. Touring anywhere from 200 to just over 300 dates a year in its earlier years, BJ recognized early on that in order to have a career as a musician it would take hard work and dedication. Leaving no market untouched, and no stoned unturned- American Aquarium has traveled all over the world and has gained a deeply loyal fan base. With seven records to their name and an additional solo record of BJ's, American Aquarium is is notable for songs lyrically geared towards the working class but backed by Tom petty-esque sound. In writing personal takes on life, and songs about struggling points in the south, American Aquarium's discography almost acts as a musical love letter from one hard worker to another.

Danny Johnson, a talented multi-instrumentalist who plays with several Triangle bands including Jack the Radio and New Reveille, keeps his lawyer on speed dial for this episode.
