I'm super happy to have the delightful couple Jackie Berkley and Zach Schmidt of Golden Everything on the show this week!! Both lovely humans and talented artists with separate paths, Zach and Jackie recently formed an amazing alt-country super-duo, and are celebrating their successful debut album together, Sweet Old World, an absolute gorgeous take on folk, country and Americana vibes. I discuss with Zack and Jackie about how their choices have lead to a healthy outlook in what can be a crazy and difficult world we call the music business. With a new album and a new baby at home, this dynamic couple is making it all happen by building a strong and organic team from the ground up. It's admirable and inspiring.Making their combination even more intriguing, Zach is a long-time stalwart on the Nashville music scene. He has two solo albums to his name and his most recent 2021 effort, Raise A Banner, is produced by Sadler Vaden and features The 400 Unit as his stellar backing band. Zach and Jackie's origin story is a meet-cute for the ages, and Zach's story of becoming a songwriter is truly legendary. We all go deep in this fun and engaging conversation, and I can't wait to share this one with all of you!!Show Notes:For more information on Golden Everything and Zack Schmidt as well as tour dates click HERE:Episode Chapters:00:00  – Episode Intro with Host Josh Rosenberg 04:36  – Spring Awakening and New Beginnings07:36  – Performing at Newport Folk Festival 10:38  – Family Life and New Arrivals  13:31  – Musical Backgrounds and Influences  16:48  – The Journey to Nashville  19:36  – Biking Across America and Songwriting  24:40  – The Journey of a Lifetime  26:38  – The Impact of Music on Life  29:36  – Inspiration from Real-Life Stories  32:48  – Finding Community in Nashville  33:38  – The Magic of Santa's Pub  39:35  – Collaborations and Musical Connections  44:40  – Creating Music Under Pressure  49:09  – The Journey to Collaboration  52:29  – Navigating Parenthood and Music  56:11  – Health Challenges and Resilience  59:29  – Plans for the Future  01:04:36 – The DIY Approach to Music  01:06:37 – Songwriting Through Parenthood01:09:50 – Episode Outro with Host Josh RosenbergFor more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email:  info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

We had the pleasure of interviewing Amythyst Kiah over Zoom video!GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Amythyst Kiah shares her new album, Still + Bright via Rounder Records. Produced by Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Green Day and Weezer) and recorded at his Nashville studio, the 12-track album is a vital new addition to Kiah's body of work, one largely dedicated to exploring the struggle and joy of true self-discovery. While her 2021 Wary + Strange details her grief, anger, and abandonment, Still + Bright is her liberation from the events of her earlier life, examining the vast expanse of her inner world, passions, self-exploration and realization, with a darkly cinematic twist. The project – which Rolling Stone hailed is “poised to be a major moment for the east Tennessee-raised singer-songwriter” – expands upon the wild definitions of Americana music. From gothic love songs with haunting vocals (“Silk and Petals feat. Butch Walker”) to a furiously stomping fantasy-inspired folk epic (“I Will Not Go Down” feat.Billy Strings"), or an ode to meditation laced with lush mandolin lines and lovely fiddle melodies (“S P A C E”), the album affirms her as an artist of both daring originality and uncompromising depth. The album is a collision of her love of indie rock, garage guitars and symphonic metal, flawlessly melded with the visceral lyricism and songwriting she's renowned for in the roots community. The project – which features collaborations with S.G. Goodman, Billy Strings and Avi Kaplan (Pentatonix) – also marks a complete transformation in Kiah's songwriting process: her first time opening up her approach and working with co-writers on an album. The album features co-writes with punk legend Tim Armstrong, Sadler Vaden (guitarist/vocalist for Jason Isbell's 400 Unit) and Sean McConnell (Brittney Spencer, Bethany Cosentino).Kiah is currently on the road on her Still + Bright Tour, plus she recently was announced as direct support for select dates of Larkin Poe's The Bloom Tour.About Amythyst Kiah:With an unforgettable voice that's both unfettered and exquisitely controlled, the Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter is a “fantastic fingerpicker, dynamo singer and profound songwriter [who] defies all sorts of stereotypes” (Guitar Player). Her 2021 release of Wary + Strange earned glowing features and reviews from The New York Times, NPR Morning Edition, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone, plus performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS Saturday Morning. Kiah is also a member of Our Native Daughters—an all-women-of-color supergroup whose standout track “Black Myself” (written by Kiah) earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best American Roots Song. She recently joined Iron & Wine on their summer tour, and has shared stages with The Who, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, CAM and more.  We want to hear from you! Jason Isbell's last Rundown was in 2019. The guitarist and songwriter, who we've called “Americana's poet laureate,” is a huge gearhead though—and his collection is truly the stuff of dreams—so a lot can happen in a few years. Currently touring with his acclaimed 400 Unit band in support of the highly acclaimed Weathervanes album, he rolls with a stash of vintage Fenders and Gibsons that would make even the least gear-motivated among us blush. That's not to mention his enviable traveling amp and effect closets. Isbell invited Perry Bean and the PG team to the Ryman for a look at his current touring rig and that of Sadler Vaden, the band's ripping co-guitarist whose relatively more modest collection is still quite the enviable one!Brought to you by D'Addario:https://ddar.io/wykyk-rrhttps://www.daddario.com/XPNDRR

We had the pleasure of interviewing Patrick Davis over Zoom video! With Carolina When I Die, Davis reintroduces himself as a Southern storyteller and classic craftsman. It's a modern-day album steeped in the timeless sounds of his influences: the smooth soul of Ray Charles, the heartland folk-rock of Jackson Browne, the nuanced country of Lyle Lovett, and the big-band bombast of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen. Tying those sounds together is a versatile musician who, having already established himself as a hit songwriter for others, is rededicating himself to his own records. Carolina When I Die may be the fifth full-length release of Davis' catalog, but it marks a new beginning, too.Carolina When I Die nods to Davis' small-town roots in Camden, South Carolina, where he spent most of his adolescence. His father was a working musician who taught his son to appreciate the good stuff, from the Beatles to Van Morrison. When he was still young, Davis would attend his dad's shows and climb onstage for a song or two, laying the foundation for the career he'd launch as an adult. With "Carolina When I Die," the album's title track, he reflects on countless miles traveled since leaving that childhood home. "I've rambled all around this world, seen the Northern Lights / I have drank with kings and queens and señoritas of the night," he sings over a finger-plucked acoustic guitar. The song isn't just a travelogue; it's a love song for one's home, with Davis longing to go back to the place where it all began. If "Carolina When I Die" unfolds like Davis' own story, then "Six String Dreams" is the story of musicians everywhere. Written alongside Sadler Vaden — longtime guitarist for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit — and rooted in a 1970s-worthy soul groove, the song pays tribute to blue-collar troubadours who make their living beneath the stage lights. During the rest of Carolina When I Die, Davis gets funky on "L-O-V-E" (written with Randolph Randolph, who recorded his own version of the song on the Grammy-nominated album Got Soul), teams up with the late Guy Clark for "Wrong Side of the Tracks," and examines the colorblind friendship between two characters on the stunning "Black Jesus." Some songs make room for stacked layers of electric guitar, brass, organ, and vocal harmonies — a dense sound that Davis regularly recreates in a live setting with his 11-piece touring band, Patrick Davis & His Midnight Choir — while others are simple, stark, acoustic recordings that shine a light on Davis' own delivery. It's an eclectic mix, delivered by a lyrically-driven songwriter who's never been afraid to embrace the full range of his influences. We want to hear from you! My introduction to the band came with 1999s Letters From Round O. Letters from Round O brought the band to a broader, dedicated audience. The guys slowed down a little in the 2000s. They kept making music and playing shows but limited touring and studio work for a while until this year's Sadler Vaden produced record called Big Dreamers. Y'all I have been a fan of Blue Dogs for twenty plus years and Big Dreamers is my favorite thing they have done. At long last (longer than it should have been because...well because time is a social construct really) Dave Hause returns for his second appearance on (*both laugh*)! When last we spoke (Episode 25 if you're keeping score at home), Dave had just self-released a double EP of Patty Griffin and Paddy Costello/Dillinger Four covers. We were still in Pandemic Year One and that project served as a fun and unique way to stay productive and creative and to dip his toes into navigating through the "new normal" waters. Fast-forward eighteen months (yes, really...18 months, almost to the day...remember when I said time was a social construct) and it was time for round two! The centerpiece of this installment was Dave's latest solo album, "Blood Harmony." It was released last October on his own record label, but because the vinyl is still trickling its way out, I don't feel QUITE so bad about catching up at the six month post-release mark. "Blood Harmony" found Dave and his brother Tim working together again, this time in Nashville. The duo and producer Will Hoge (himself not only a brilliant songwriter and masterful producer but a veteran of this show as well - see Episode 12) holed up at Sound Emporium with a slew of heavy-hitting studio musicians (Sadler Vaden, Tom Bukovac, Garry Tallent!!?!?!). "Blood Harmony" finds Hause running headlong down the Americana path that he'd been at least tip-toeing down for the last decade. We talked about the album, and the recording, and Will Hoge's greatness, and the idea of "chasing the song." We also talked about his ongoing partnership with Tim (including work on Tim's own upcoming debut solo album) and about therapy and about touring in a never-ending pandemic and a lot more, as we are want to do. We welcome Morgan Wade, one of the hottest musical poets to emerge in quite some time. Morgan is a rocker; a country troubadour and a chanting musical soul. With the primacy of her speedy strings of real-life images, Morgan has quickly established herself as an artist on the rise, and her debut album 'Reckless' is an early candidate for Album of The Year. Morgan's “singing” voice has an eerie allure and her “tunes” conform dimly to the primitive patterns of Fifties rock. In fact, 'blink and your miss' musical brushes of everything from Neil Young to Linda Ronstadt pass by the listener through the journey of her 10 song masterpiece, Produced by Sadler Vaden. Join us to hear Morgan talk about the concept of fame, being an old soul, her music and she pays tribute to her late dog 'Gordy' . The latter she is spearheading a campaign to build a dog park in his honor and YOU can help! Visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/gordi-wade-dog-park-fundraiser and donate whatever you can, in honor of Gordy and animal love everywhere. For more on Morgan Wade visit: morganwademusic.com

On this new episode of Late Era, they dig into an album that even Wikipedia says “was largely greeted as a strange and disappointing follow-up to 1989's critically acclaimed Oh Mercy.” Sam, Winston and Andy dive in and look at the strangeness of this record, the cameos, the time when it was made, and whether there's anything worth going back to here. A snippet of this episode is included here for your listening pleasure!Steve Parish on Comes A Time. In this episode, Oteil and Mike welcome Steve Parish, longtime crew member for the Grateful Dead and close friend of Jerry Garcia. The three talk about the Dead's early days in San Francisco, Steve's career with the band, from roadie to manager; and, why the Dead could be a model for how we should live our lives today. Steve tells Oteil and Mike what he learned 10 years after the legendary 1978 Grateful Dead concert in Egypt, and about that time he delivered a baby while Bob Weir was writing the song “Cassidy.” This is a not-to-be missed episode.Sadler Vaden on Helping Friendly Podcast. This show is from 10/5/2002 in Spotsylvania, VA. “This festival took place during the height of the D.C. Sniper shootings in Virginia just off of I-95. The Disco Biscuits were the only late-night act on their own secondary woods stage. We all like to say we are busy - a lot going on at home, with family, pandemic lockdown - you know, that old chestnut. And then there is Sadler Vaden busy. The guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer has had just a tad going on. Over the past year, he's been in the studio with rising country rock artist Morgan Wade. In March, Vaden released a much-praised solo record that drew comparisons to Tom Petty and Oasis. And then there's his full time job as lead guitar for Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit - they released a critically acclaimed record in June. It's no wonder why it took Sadler and Load Out host Aaron Perlut six months to finally get an interview on the books.

How did the guest musicians like Billy Preston influence these songs? Do Sadler and Jason Isbell fight over what the best Stones album is? Which song of Sadler's is directly inspired by 'Angie'? Why did the Stones record Goats Head Soup in Jamaica? Why don't the Stones play most of these songs live? What lyric in 'Winter' has Sadler been mishearing for years, and how does The Wire fit in? My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music.
