In preparation for his film " the last days" remastered release on Netflix, we get the opportunity to speak to Dr. Michael Berenbaum. Dr. Berenbaum was the historical consultant for this academy award-winning holocaust film. We Talk About what inspired him to work on holocaust related projects his entire life. What is the message for our generation about what happened in Germany? What is his life mission? Why is this film so important? Michael Berenbaum is an American scholar, professor, rabbi, writer, and filmmaker, who specializes in the study of the Holocaust. He served as Deputy Director of the President's Commission on the Holocaust Project Director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), and Director of the USHMM's Holocaust Research Institute Berenbaum, who is Jewish, graduated from Queens College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967 and received his doctorate from Florida State University in 1975. He also attended The Hebrew University, the Jewish Theological Seminary, and Boston University. Berenbaum received Rabbinic ordination (Orthodox) by Rabbi Yaakov Rabin at the age of 23. Berenbaum held teaching posts at Florida State University, Yale University, Georgetown University, Wesleyan University, George Washington University, the University of Maryland, College Park, and American University, and is currently a Professor of Jewish Studies at the American Jewish University (Los Angeles). He is the author and editor of eighteen books, including After Tragedy and Triumph, a study of the state of American Jewry in the early 1990s, as well as The World Must Know, Anatomy of the Auschwitz Death Camp. He co-edited After The Passion is Gone: American Religious Consequences with Shawn Landres (2004) which examines the social impact of the film The Passion of Christ on religious groups. Berenbaum and Landres took a public role in shaping the interreligious response to the film. Berenbaum is the Executive Editor of the New Encyclopedia Judaica, 2nd ed., that includes 22 volumes, six million words, and 25,000 individual contributions to Jewish knowledge, published in December 2006 (ISBN 0028659287); it won the Dartmouth Medal of the American Library Association for the outstanding reference work of 2006. Berenbaum co-produced One Survivor Remembers: The Gerda Weissmann Klein Story,[9] a film which was recognized with an Academy Award an Emmy Award, and the Cable Ace Award. He was the chief historical consultant for Last Days, which also won an Academy Award in 1998. In 2001, Berenbaum was a historical consultant for the History Channel's The Holocaust: The Untold Story, which won the CINE Golden Eagle Award and a silver medal at the US International Film and Video Festival. He was also Executive Producer of a film entitled Desperate Hours about the unique and rarely acknowledged role The Republic of Turkey played in rescuing Jews from Nazi Germany's final solution and "About Face: The Story of The Jewish Refugee Soldiers of WWII". Berenbaum was executive producer of Swimming in Auschwitz and was a consultant for Defiance and Uprising, among other Holocaust-related films and documentaries. Berenbaum is the founding partner of Berenbaum Jacobs Associates, a firm designing Museums, Special Exhibitions, Memorials, and Educational Centers. In 2019 and 2020 he served as a history consultant for the Serbian historical drama film Dara of Jasenovac. Enjoy! He is a  graduate of Yeshiva University with an MA in Secondary Jewish Education from the Azrieli Graduate School for Jewish Education and Administration and Rabbinic Ordination from the Rabbi Isaac Elchonon Theological Seminary, both at Yeshiva University.     Rabbi Simi Lerner is a Jewish philosopher and educator. He is deeply connected to the writings of Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch. He has his own Podcast called Judaism From Within. Simi is launching a brand new podcast for Darchei Noam Yeshiva called Jewish Perspectives.  He works hard to spread Torah every day both online and offline. Simi delivers classes for inspired TLV an outreach organization in Tel Aviv and before that had taught at the JLE in England. Simi and Ahron have a wide-ranging conversation about what he does and why he does it. They discuss how Simi got into the teachings of Rav Hirsch and his journey into Jewish education. From the name of his podcast to the time limit on each episode, Simi has thought of everything when it comes to teaching Torah.     We need a new approach to how shabbos meals are run.  Many people look forward to Shabbos as a time of rest and family bonding but they are only disappointed week after week after very frustrating meal times. Kids don't want to be there, Parsha sheets just don't make the cut, and the conversation just usually ends up being about work. We found that the most inspiring, fun, engaging, and informative meals at our home were those that the conversation was flowing.  Conversations were always oriented around the Torah perspective on things happening in the world.  The children were always engaged and the guests were comfortable sharing their perspectives. The one thing that didn't happen is a formal Dvar Torah or Parsha class.  At our Shabbos meals, no one looked at their watch! -- We hope with this series to bring you a little taste of those shabbos conversations in order that you can either bring up these topics at your table or be empowered to make your own engaging conversations.   This week we discuss a post that was going around Jewish Twitter about R' Dovid Feinstein.
