Več o nastajanju monografije Slovenski taboriščniki v Jasenovcu pove Slavko Alojz Kramar v oddaji izšlo je, v pogovoru z Markom Goljo, posnetim v Slovenskem domu v Zagrebu.

Somewhere between 70,000 and 100,000 Jews, Roma, and ethnic Serbs were murdered in the Jasenovac concentration camp in what is now Croatian.  This camp was run by Croatians without Nazi involvement.  Yet few outside of the Balkans have heard of it.In this week's episode, I talk with Stipe Odak about the incredibly complex history of the camp as well as the Holocaust in region.  We also delve into the difficult memory politics of the camp and its use during the 1990s Balkan genocides.Stipe Odak is a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Political Science at the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium) and, as of September 2024, an assistant professor in the field of applied ethics at the same university. Initially one of the largest camps of the Second World War, Jasenovac became a symbol of supra-national unity during the Yugoslav period and in the 1990s reemerged as a contested symbol of narrational victimhood. By analyzing some of the most controversial topics related to the Second World War in south-eastern Europe: the Holocaust, the genocide of Serbs and Roma, the issue of political prisoners and state-sponsored crimes, censorship during Communist Yugoslavia, the use of memory in war propaganda, and representation of tragedies in museums and art, it allows for a greater understanding of the development of intergroup violence in the former Yugoslavia.  Kelly McFall is Professor of History and Director of the Honors Program at Newman University. Kateremu sodobnemu Herkulu bo uspelo izkopati truplo rajnega Boga? Doklej bo hripav človeški zbor pel elegijo o Bogu?

Propaganda is a word thrown around, but very few people understand the nature of the indoctrination within the. United States. David Swanson of “World Beyond War” says:When we imagine that the U.S. military only occasionally and slightly influences U.S. movies, we are extremely badly deceived. The actual impact is on thousands of movies made, and thousands of others never made. And television shows of every variety. The military guests and celebrations of the U.S. military on game shows and cooking shows are no more spontaneous or civilian in origin than the ceremonies glorifying members of the U.S. military at professional sports games–ceremonies that have been paid for and choreographed by U.S. tax dollars and the U.S. military. The “entertainment” content carefully shaped by the “entertainment” offices of the Pentagon and the CIA doesn’t just insidiously prepare people to react differently to news about war and peace in the world. To a huge extent it substitutes a different reality for people who learn very little actual news about the world at all.The alliance between the military and Hollywood is the main reason that we have lots of big blockbuster movies on certain topics and few if any on others. Studios have written scripts and hired top actors for movies on things like Iran-Contra that have never seen the light of day because of a Pentagon rejection. Today, we interview award winning researchers Tom Secker and Matthew Alford who have spent decades trying to uncover the shady relationship between Hollywood, the Pentagon, the CIA and the Department of Defense. A week after Americans and Europeans joined together through virtual events in commemorating the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (V-E Day 2020), remembering the significant sacrifices of an entire generation fighting for freedom against tyranny, the Croatian parliament co-organized an annual event honoring pro-Nazi Ustasha soldiers of the Independent State of Croatia a fascist regime which forged strong ties with Nazi Germany during the Second World War. On Saturday, May 16, 2020 in Sarajevo, Bosnia, the Croatian parliament sponsored an event to further fuel anti-Semitism and Holocaust revisionism in the Balkans. A separate event was held in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. During the Holocaust, 80% of Croatia’s Jews were murdered under the rule of the pro-Nazi Croatian Ustasha government. In Sarajevo alone, 7,000 out of 10,000 Jews were murdered under the rule of the Croatian Ustasha government. While these public events for May 2020 were reported in advance, the majority of Western diplomats residing in the capital city of Zagreb remained silent. The Western diplomatic appeasement tactic has emboldened Croatia’s anti-Semitic figures. The diplomatic corps using Western taxpayer funds continue to wine and dine Croatia’s politicians mired in corruption. EU and NATO member Croatia is dependent on American taxpayer funds through billions of dollars in direct aid, grants, and favorable loans via the World Bank, EBRD and other entities. How would Americans and Europeans respond if the modern-day Bundenstag — Germany’s parliament would sponsor an event commemorating Nazi soldiers and glorify Adolf Hitler and the country’s dark history? The West must not remain silent in the face of evil when facing Croatia’s anti-Semitic figures fueling Holocaust revisionism. Dr. Ognjen Kraus, president of The Coordination of Jewish Communities said, “The HDZ government has failed to address the rise of anti-Semitism and the display of fascist symbols. It is lenient towards those sympathetic to the WWII Croatian fascist Ustasha regime.” Over the years, Croatia’s politicians have used anti-Semitic laws to block the return of Jewish property and currency stolen during the rule of the Croatian Ustasha government from 1941–1945. Some $3 billion dollars worth of stolen private property and currency ought to be returned to Croatian Jewish families, their descendants and the Jewish community. A principled approach from the West should include legislative action to freeze all taxpayer funded aid sent to Croatia via EBRD, The World Bank and NATO related military assistance and to censure Croatia’s politicians. The US State Department ought to block the visit of Croatian politicians, anti-Semitic figures, and individuals tied to Croatia’s criminal and corrupt networks to enter the United States of America. Croatia’s government officials have been lobbying through Washingtom, D.C.-based groups including think tanks to expedite its entrance into the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. America’s elected officials should block Croatia’s entry into this special designated visa program. The US Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services ought to take a leadership role in carefully vetting visa applicants from Croatia. The world is watching. Principled leaders and engaged citizens within strong rule of law nations have a responsibility to act. We owe it to the six million Jews and the 80% of Croatian Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust. Trials find 17 former Auschwitz SS officials and guards guilty. During World War II, Nazi Germany had dozens of prisons, often referred to as “camps” in various countries. They were used to hold prisoners of war, and any undesirable people. They were also used for exterminations, supplying forced labour and to transfer prisoners. The most infamous of these facilities were the extermination camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Belżec, Kulmhof, Jasenovac, Lwów, Majdenek, Maly Trostenets, Sobibór, Treblinka and Warsaw. Two decades after the Allies had liberated Germany’s camps, the world watched court proceedings that would determine the fate of former Secret Service (SS) officials and guards. This was the first time persons responsible for the atrocities were brought before a German court, and it was seen by many as a shift in which Germans were finally dealing with the horrors instead of hoping the memories would fade. On August 19, 1965, following a year and a half of proceedings, an official read out the sentences in a courtroom in Frankfurt, Germany. This second of the Auschwitz trials found 17 men guilty of having participated in murder and torture at the former extermination camp in Poland while acquitting three others for lack of evidence. Six of the guilty men received sentences of life imprisonment of hard labour, the toughest penalty under German law (the death penalty having been outlawed in 1949). The other 11 received sentences of between 39 months and 14 years of hard labour. The court rejected the defence that these men were just small cogs in the process. Judge Hans Hofmeyer said, “Human life is too short to expiate the crimes committed at Auschwitz.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
