Purim is on its way, so we've invited who we think are two of the funniest (and maybe cleverest) ladies to grace the pages of Mishpacha Magazine, and that's Chani Judowitz and Bracha Stein, the masterminds of The Kichels' comics. We say that The Kichels is social commentary in its best form. They manage to point out silly things about frum life in a way that's highly relatable, while doing it in such a loving and playful way. It's like mussar and validation all in one hilarious package. (Oh, and by the way, you can't miss our very special “guests” this episode to provide some extra laughs this Adar season.) On this DMC we discuss: How the Kichels were born Chani and Bracha's process of collaboration Their goals in starting the comic strip Their reaction to its popularity What they think the Kichels has accomplished in starting communal conversations Their funniest, most loved, and most controversial strips What's next for the Kichels We love hearing from our listeners. Today's episode was really fun! Naomi Nachman is amazing and has such a fascinating life. I loved speaking with her and hearing her enthusiasm and positive energy. This episode was so much fun but it was also very inspiring for me. So many times we are held back by our lack of experience or the stories we make up in our heads. Naomi had a vision and she just went for it and she is so successful today. Here's a bit more about Naomi: Naomi first started her own kosher personal chef business, The Aussie Gourmet, in 2004 to cater weekly and Shabbat/Yom Tov meals for families and individuals within The Five Towns and neighboring communities. Naomi Nachman has her own cooking show, Sunny Side Up, on the Kosher.com network and also hosts her own weekly show, “Table for Two with Naomi Nachman” on The Nachum Segal Network – in which discusses all food-related topics. In addition, Naomi writes a monthly column for the Mishpacha Magazine covering food and travel, and is also a contributing editor to The Jewish Home newspaper for the last 10 years, distributed in many states across the country writing weekly recipes. Naomi has also been a guest host on the QVC TV network and has made a variety of guest appearances on CBS TV (in both NY and Washington), NBC Morning News, Fox 5 New York, and the Hallmark Channel and has been quoted by the Forbes Magazine, Wall Street Journal on Jewish food trends. Naomi has become known as a Kosher food media influencer and has represented many brands on social media, including Kosher.com, Gefen, Tropicana, Breakstone's, Ore-ida, Gourmet Glatt and Maxwell House. In 2017, Naomi published her debut cookbook, Perfect For Pesach with Artscroll Publications; and in November, 2018 Naomi published her second cookbook, Perfect Flavors (also with Artscroll Publications). Naomi has sold more than 28,000 copies of her books. Naomi is often sought after to do cooking demonstrations, book signings and to produce Kosher Chopped-style cooking competitions across the world, where she shares her immense enthusiasm and passion for food. In 2018, Naomi was invited to attend the New Jewish Media summit where she met with President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu. In the last several years, Naomi has traveled extensively with her family as well as working on tours such as Birthright, Pesach programs and summer travel. When Naomi is not traveling she can be found with her husband and family in Long Island, New York. Thank you for being here! When Alexandra Fleksher heard about her former high school teacher's transformation from high school Judaic studies teacher to modeling executive Ms. Julia Haart, she was curious about the turn of events in her former teacher's life. But when she saw that Ms. Haart produced and starred in a Netflix reality TV show titled “My Unorthodox Life,” Alexandra was deeply concerned about the ramifications her story and messaging would have on the global Orthodox community. As she learned more about the show and the pernicious stereotypes it peddled about Orthodox women being a monolithic group of uneducated, oppressed baby-making machines, and her portrayal of Orthodox society as a lifestyle stuck in the 1800s, Alexandra decided it was time to stand up and defend the truths of Orthodox Judaism and the truths of Orthodox women everywhere. Alexandra created a social media campaign with the hashtags #myorthodoxlife and #thisisorthodox to give Orthodox women the space to not only tell their stories, but to stand up for misrepresentation. She wanted to showcase proud religious women who lead satisfying, healthy and fulfilling Orthodox lives and to give followers insight into actual people who are Orthodox, their personalities, their backgrounds, their beliefs, and their accomplishments. She had no idea it would blow up overnight, or that it would serve as a source of strength and inspiration for so many Orthodox men and women. Thousands of women took to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and even LinkedIn to share their stories, outraged and the claims made against them as Torah-observant women in the Netflix series. They recognized that the show wasn't about one person's story, which many felt misrepresented both the Monsey community and less-sheltered religious lifestyle that Julia in fact led. Instead, “My Unorthodox Life” was a smear campaign spouting tropes and dangerous stereotypes, and there was an army of religious women waiting who wouldn't stand for it. ABOUT OUR GUEST: Alexandra Fleksher is an educator, speaker, op-ed columnist for Mishpacha Magazine, and co-host of the Normal Frum Women podcast. She holds a M.S. in Jewish Education from the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and a B.A. in English/Communications from Stern College for Women. As a member of the OU Speakers Bureau, Alex had spoken for synagogues and schools around the country. She lives in Cleveland with her husband and five children.

In today's episode, I spoke with Sarah Chana Radcliffe about the overlap between Intuitive Eating and what she sees in her psychology practice. Their is definitely a huge overlap between people who are struggling with binge eating and the concept of "self loathing." People use food because they are feeling so badly about themselves and the food matches the mood. People may also use food to protect them from the pain they may be feeling. This coping mechanism could have began in childhood and the adult now has no recollection of how and why it started, but it is very much apart of their adult life. Sarah Chana and I obviously tackle these issues from different angles and it is really interesting to hear about it! Enjoy the show! Sarah Chana Radcliffe is a psychologist in private practice in Toronto Canada, counseling parents, couples and individuals. Mrs. Radcliffe is the author of the HarperCollins Publications “Raise Your Kids without Raising Your Voice” and “The Fear Fix,” as well as 7 books on Jewish family life and emotional well-being, including her most recent release “Better Behavior Now!” Sarah Chana is a weekly columnist for the Family First section of the internationally distributed Mishpacha Magazine. Last episode, we asked everyone in our takeaway to think about if life turned out the way you dreamed it would as a teenager, and what you would tell your teenage self about your future. We were really thinking ahead about today's episode. So here we are: You're an adult, and this is your life. There are going to be disappointments and dissatisfactions. It's normal. But now what? How can we be content with the life we have? In this episode we'll be talking about ways we have come to terms with how our lives are not the exact pictures we painted them to be. We're also talking with author and Mishpacha Magazine contributor Esther Kurtz about the idea of “Jewish privilege” and how that plays out in our struggles of being satisfied with our lots. By the end of today's episode we hope you walk away feeling inspired to better appreciate the life you lead, warts and all, and feel more empowered to deal with any interfering thoughts of comparison, inadequacy and disappointment that rob the joy out of life. The Haskala movement, was a Jewish movement of the 18th and 19th centuries which sought to implement changes in Jewish life and society. Often discussed yet just as often misunderstood, it is intriguing as it is confusing. Was the haskala the Jewish Enlightenment? When was this movement? Where did it take place? Can it even be classified as a 'movement'? How so? Who were its primary personalities? How did they impact Jewish life? Is the rise of Jewish nationalism at the end of the 19th century related to haskala movement of the earlier decades? When did the haskala end? If there is one unifying characteristic of this very dispersed 'movement', it is the use of the written word as the primary mechanism and tool to get their message across. The rise in maskilic literature took the form of newspapers, journals, poetry, novels, short stories and satire. The haskala movement sought to bring change to Jewish life in the modern world, and it played a significant role in the Jewish history of the 19th century. ABOUT THIS EPISODE Eli Paley grew up with rich family history - the son of a survivor and a long-standing scion of Jerusalem aristocracy. Early love of Torah story fused with business interests, and Eli found himself at the helm of the fledgling Mishpacha Magazine, which he ultimately catalyzed into a media empire. In more recent years, he founded the Haredi Institute for Public Affairs, a multi-disciplinary think tank aimed at offering research-driven solutions to this population's most vexing challenges.
