Time keeps flowing like a river - year after year the Urban Cosmonaut journey goes on - and we are thrilled by the sound adventures which await us on the path. We keep travelling on the beat, and today's trip brings us to the Anatolian plateau to enjoy the Turkish delight which Erhan Yilmaz (https://soundcloud.com/erhanyilmazedits) prepared for us. Erhan was born on the shores of the Black Sea, he has been playing music for about a decade already, he performed in radioshows and music venues alongside many instrumentalists. His sound experiments and melodic excursions helped Erhan to develop the fascinating style he displays in his mix. His sound is diverse and heterogeneous, sliding smoothly between house tracks and disco-folk rhythms produced with a rich selection of ethnic motifs from Turkey and Middle-East. It is a vibrant sound made of histories and memories, a sound which recalls the beautiful moments spent with the beloved ones. This is what inspired the artist while recording the mix. We are happy to welcome this new friend at our podcast series, and wish you a wonderful time with his mix. It was a sparkling Saturday night at Fusion Festival, all dancers were out of their shelters after the burning sun had set, the energy was raising high when Buddy aka Kusht (https://soundcloud.com/kusht-music) stepped on stage and began his show. Kusht is a Norway-based Scottishman born under the sign of Aquarius, who has been playing in bands for about sixteen years and started his electronic productions seven years ago. His first steps into this new dimension were not really firm, he says. His loud, rock background was clear, but he couldn't really identify his electronic sound until he visited Fusion Festival for the first time, four years ago. In that very inspiring chaos he found his path, he finally knew how his productions were about to sound, and here we have a great taste of that. The set that we are about to bring to your ears was recorded live at the Dub Station. It comprises exclusively his original material, some of it was released on his latest vinyl ‘Together'(@ynfnd), and some is still unreleased. For this live set Kusht unleashed his guitar and selected the tracks he plays it the most on, so the set sounds more like a rock performance with world-music influences, rather than the typical electronic set. The artist confessed to us that sometimes he wishes he had an extra arm playing live guitar throughout his performances. Enough words spent, it's time to listen to this amazing set...and to listen to it LOUD! After being absent for many months, we would like to revive our podcast series by introducing you to one of the finest artists we could ever present - Danaga! (https://soundcloud.com/danaga) This superb producer was born and raised in one of the wildest and mysterious areas of the old continent: the region of Transylvania, in Romania, where he grew up in the analog era, studying the classic guitar and the piano and collecting music on cassettes. The secrecy and mystique of that land is well represented in Danaga's productions, which are beautifully displayed in the live recording. For this Mix he used Elektron Analog Keys, Hohner Pianet T, Memory Man Analog Delay, a cheap romanian Stratocaster Guitar, Kaoss Pad, PVC homemade flutes and various percussion instruments. It comes as a sort of music diary telling of the ‘transformative experience' he went through while experimenting with those Instruments in the last years. Unlike other mixes of our series, this is not a musical journey, but rather a flow which is neither meant to lead anywhere, nor to serve a function. It is only meant to be. This intriguing concept follows the ideas of the British philosopher and writer Alan Watts, which inspired Danaga while recording the mix. We wish you all a wonderful awakening. Nostalgic for the good ole Latin-American downtempo? Then this mixtape is just what you need with @lagartijeando delivering an ode to the Andean sound directly to your soul! Despite the international acclaim this great Argentinian producer has received over the last couple of years, he chose to stay in the small village where he was born and raised. His productions, featuring local instruments and motifs, manifest his admirable attachment to his origins and the traditional music of his homeland. His first approach to music, at the age of 14, was accidental because “nobody wanted to play bass guitar in town” so he learned it and started to play with his friends. It is astonishing how this almost random first step awakened his dormant talent for music which turned a boy into a brilliant electronic producer and music professor. The set that Lagartijeando prepared for UCR features many of his latest productions including seven unreleased tracks. Gentle instrumental sounds of flutes and drums, organic samples and a vibrant electronic beat blend beautifully into an enchanting musical journey which we are pleased to offer to our listeners. As music lovers, we all asked ourselves at least once what music is about. What is its function? How did it become such an important component of our lives? Maguera (https://soundcloud.com/maguera) questioned himself about it too, and he concluded that for him it is all about communication and profound emotions. This talented Italo-Danish composer, musician, and electronic producer believes that music is the strongest medium available to reach people, and he employed it to send out a call to self-reflection to our listeners and to himself. In fact, he told us of his thoughts about the decreasing ability of the people to feel empathy and how this is affecting our essence. This is the main theme of the splendid mix he recorded for UCR. His concern towards the rising narcissism and egomania, as well as his hope for an imminent change of direction, drove the artist in the recording of the mix. It's possibly the duel between these controversial strong emotions that makes this mix so beautifully heterogeneous, with melancholic notes alternating with gleeful and dreamy moments. The set consists mostly of Maguera's own productions played live, which the artist blended masterfully with others' tracks, and it's meant to stimulate our capability to travel through our thoughts and feelings about empathy. Despite his elusiveness and humbleness, Maguera has made great display of the communicative power of his sound and of his moral depth. We at UCR are delighted to share his set with our listeners and welcome his call to self-reflection. The sun shines again in the Berlin sky and warms up our hearts, colors become vivid and the rhythms more vibrant. It is the right time to welcome Lui Mafuta (https://soundcloud.com/luimafuta) to our podcast series and to spread his seductive and enveloping sound into the warm breeze. Lui's passion for music began in his adolescence when he started playing jazz drums alongside his father. He was greatly influenced by hip hop beats which formed the bedrock of his sound and early productions. However, the discovery of the so called ‘downtempo' brought a remarkable change in his career as producer and introduced Lui to electronic music. The ease of the rhythms and the openness of the people crowding the scene helped him find a new form of expression, and shaped him to the brilliant producer that we know. Lui finds his inspiration in the energy of the crowd, and it´s his mission to return that energy in form of fresh sound. Lui finds enjoyment and motivation in the freedom that music production itself entails. The set he prepared for UCR was recorded live and consists exclusively of his own productions which are masterfully blended for us. We invite everyone - music lovers and attentive listeners, to experience that freedom too. It's celebration time at UCR! We beat the drum for the 50th episode of our beloved podcast series and rejoice in this festive occasion with a very special artist and human being, the one who made UCR a reality, our own @burntale ❤️ Her energy goes beyond the imaginable for a human being: she is constantly busy nurturing her many interests, keen to pursue her dreams and ready to enjoy life at its best. A few years ago, this powerful and motivated artist began her journey into sound encouraged by her friends and supported by another one of our UCR homies, the wizard of slowtempo, So'ham. The exquisite mix that we are delighted to share with our listeners comes straight from the tropics. It was driven by the memories of her journeys and by the energy of the crowd who were dancing on her vibes. The set is a kaleidoscope of cultures and people from all corners of the beautiful planet that we inhabit. It's her personal reminder to never stop wondering about the world surrounding us and to continue to dare and to explore. Finally, this mix showcases the sounds that BurnTale herself loves to dance to and, as we all know, everything becomes magical when it's made with love. The calendar year is getting to an end and many tend to look back at the joys and successes, but also at the false steps. No better time than this to present a cosmonautic experience offered to us by the one and only Pacaya. His beautiful creations as painter, illustrator, and graphic designer have been delighting us for long time, and now we have the rare opportunity to appreciate his aesthetic also through sound. This beloved friend of ours embodies the concept of the multisensorial artist displaying here an exquisite selection of world music. The sound is the fourth dimension of his visual art. Pacaya explained that each of his artistic creations can be experienced in a deeper way when accompanied by the sound which nourished his mind, and which drove his hand during the making. The sound, somehow, makes the colours more vivid and complement the creation with further details. The inclusion of the sound wide opens the door which the visual art unlocks. That's the doors to the intimate and emotional world of the artist, a world which Pacaya has been shaping with the physical and metaphysical experiences that he has collected through space and time. Crossing that doorstep gives the chance to make a digression from our respective “here and now” to transcend towards an inner dimension where we can relive our joys and forget our troubles, if we like, or to face the latter with calm and serenity. In that dimension we have the chance to enjoy our time, but also to learn from our false steps in a constructive and peaceful manner. The secret to do this is simple: just relax and feel. If you live in a big city which somehow limits your contact with the natural world, Beatfarmer's mix, prepared for UCR, will surely rescue your spirit and reconnect it with the elements. If such a connection is still strong inside of you, these vibes will raise you up further and make your body sway in a mystical dance. Beatfarmer's sounds come from the woods of a secret island where this countryman settled with his family and made his home. There, the forces of nature and the spirits inhabiting those magical woods inspire his productions. While he mostly focuses on making the energy flow within and between people when he performs, Beatfarmer took the chance to enlarge the horizons of his soundscape when he produced this podcast. This masterfully blended live recorded mix comprises of his own exclusive productions, original tracks and remixes which is reminiscent of his tour through Germany last summer. His inspiration comes from the energy of the festival crowd which Beatfarmer describes as “playful, trancy, and a little wild”. The inspiration that comes to mind for us are the dancers, the forever-young and the wild-hearted. The energy we transmitted to him, now returns to us in the form of modern ritualistic music to rouse our spirits and take off for a mystical journey into the essence of nature. We at UCR are pleased to undertake such journey and invite our curious listeners to come along. Find Beatfarmer here: https://soundcloud.com/beatfarmer https://www.facebook.com/beatfarmer/
Comprised of violins, violas, cellos and double basses, the strings form an emotionally powerful section of a symphony orchestra. Those instruments are Andi Otto's specialties and passions; characterizing his early formation. After studying cello as a teenager, Andi stepped into the endless dimension of electronic music production and debuted his first releases as Springintgut. Once he had explored the possibilities offered by electronic devices, Andi's love for concert moved him to embrace his cello, and to develop an innovative system of sensors to mount on it. This prototypical instrument, which he re-named “Fello”, has become Andi's companion in live performances and studio productions. Given his passion for strings, they are the main theme of the mix that the scientist-musician prepared for UCR. Moved by his insatiable curiosity, Andi has undertaken an exploration of the use of strings across modern music and decided to bring our listeners along the mesmerizing sound journey. The voyage begins with the notes of a legend, the inspired and inspiring musician known as Alice Coltrane. “This mix is my personal ode to her legacy”, Andi stated. The strings exploration gradually fades along the mix and leaves space to ambient sounds which inspired Andi for his latest productions. Abundant far-eastern motifs and chants confer profound spiritual energy to this mix, and that is the ultimate meaning of being musician according to Andi: “It's about the spiritual energy which can be coded into sound by people, instruments, bodies, and ears." We at UCR cannot find better words to express such an inspiring concept and invite our listeners to absorb the energy that Andi sent to us with his rhapsodic selection. Somebody would trivially call this music “neofolk”, but that's not the case of Jin Yerei, who instead prefers to call it “neurofolk”. This is the name which he likes to use to describe the nature of his sound. A mental combination of spacy effects and traditional motifs from his homeland Argentina bouncing on a pleasant lilting beat. This humble musician gifted of uncommon sensibility and skill is not accustomed to release podcasts or mixes, being instead focused on music composition and production. Nevertheless, here he comes with this jewel that he decided to offer to UCR. The artist produced this live set mixing exclusively his own productions, including some unreleased material. This is meant to be a time travel towards a dystopian future dominated by machines. Humans, living like outcasts of that society, would use their ancient music and chants to remind themselves of the good old times, when humans still had control over machines. Such dramatic scenario, so easy to figure and too often recognizable in some aspects of our societies, serves the artist to remind us of the immense power of music to evoke feelings, to revive lost civilizations, to survive the tragedies. Music is the utopia in the dystopia, or as Jin Yerei says: “Music saves the day, always!”. We at UCR couldn't agree more and invite our listeners to live their own utopia while enjoying this wonderful mix! Find Jin Yerei on: https://soundcloud.com/jinyerei https://www.facebook.com/jinyerei
After discovering the world of electronic music in 2000, today's featured artist Muno has since experimented with classical, minimal house, and dance, before discovering his definitive ‘intercultural dark' sound. Formerly performing under the alias Gurtz during his electronic dance phase, Muno also performs as part of the trio Kermesse. In recent years, while travelling Europe, a new musical dimension opened for Muno who decided he wanted his music to bring fresh vibes for both his listeners and himself. “I returned home from a two month trip in Europe, I had heard a lot of artists playing very similar music. I understood that I needed something different after this trip” he said, “a new challenge.” So for today's podcast he offers us a blend of his remastered classic tracks, as well as a few unreleased ones. The result is a calm and relaxing, but also very playful mix, which evokes feelings of cool waters, dripping out through the speakers, with each new beat a colourful drop tapping against the water's surface. Muno hopes this mix will remind his listeners to take a moment to slow down, to live simply, and to have patience. “Today we live in a hurry” he said, “many times without a clear destination. Let's try go back to the simple, the spirit, the matter, and the music that connects it.” This mix is a call to reconsider what is truly necessary in our modern lives, to think about what you want from this life, and to live in the moment, to enjoy the music and forget about everything else. We hope you enjoy this mix as much as we have, and happy listening… Find Muno on: https://soundcloud.com/munomusic https://www.facebook.com/munomusic
Perfectly in tune with the summer season upon us, Islandman presents a refreshing sound from the shores of the Black Sea with this splendid sunny mix. Originally from Turkey, this brilliant producer started out at a young age and made his way in music by playing a traditional long-necked lute known as a saz. It's thanks to this early relationship with music that Islandman developed the technique and feeling needed to handle farfetched rhythms, sounds, and chants, inspired by the flowering cultures of the Mediterranean basin and beyond to blend them with mastery in his tracks and mixes. This eclecticism and understanding of music has helped him put together a wide range of melodies and musical styles which ranges from enchanting edits of traditional Bulgarian sounds to smooth Balearic disco. His mix is exciting and mesmerising, catching the mind in a gentle twine of melodies and rhythms. His perfect balance of percussions and electronic beats shakes and ripples throughout the track, and lifts you with ecstatic vibes. The mix goes on in a beautifully arranged journey set by the pace of your own inner dance, as if the concept of time ceases to exist and it's just you and the music. So, grab your headphones, go for a walk amongst nature and let Islandman take you to that hidden place within. From us at UCR, we hope you enjoy the sounds of Islandman as much as we do. When you take off for a musical journey, the launch pad is known, but you can rarely forecast the landing strip and the journey in between. As Cosmonauts, that uncertainty is what we enjoy most: the wonder experienced along the trip, the polychromatic soundscapes revealed after a transition and the playful bounce between colourful beats along a track. In this episode of our podcast series, we bring you Da Iguana, a true sound explorer. This eclectic multi-instrumentalist started wandering the vastness of sound as a guitarist and bassplayer in his childhood and built his talent thanks to an astonishing variety of musical projects. In his mix prepared for UCR, he gifts us many of his latest unreleased tracks which are beautifully blended with past productions. Despite the multicultural flavor and prismatic style of the tracks in this mix, most of them resulted from an inspiring journey he had with his muse through Central America and the Caribbean, much like the voyages green iguanas take across those same lands and waters. We think this mix is as thrilling and mesmerizing as that journey, so close your eyes and let Da Iguana guide you through this musical experience. Da Iguana and UCR wish you “Buen Viaje”! For this episode, we are delighted to present you an original mix created for us by that extraordinary producer known as El Búho. His ability to blend natural tones and traditional South American motifs with electronic beat grew along the past 9 years and is now renowned. The resulting music creates magical soundscapes, it feels like having a night walk in a forest, the air is filled with the buzz of the creatures swarming around, fireflies sparkle in the dark. Although El Búho's acoustics are painted in vivid colours, this mix is inspired by Winter. It all begun on a cloudy day in one of those “hobbit-esque” villages in Northern England. You can imagine him sitting by the window, watching the clouds being pushed on by the wind, while the fire burns slow in the stove. There, the artist found inspiration and recorded many of the impressions that we can now listen to on this beautiful mix. The rain tapping on the ground, jackdaws cawing, crunchy leaves being caressed by the wind… Those organic sounds, so familiar and yet so ethereal, they free your mind and might let you fly to imaginary locations. They're able to evoke bygone memories or make us dream of new places to explore. From there, the mix develops along the Winter and welcomes the upcoming Spring. So now open your heart, feel this delicate sound touching it and unleash your imagination to let your mind travel to your own peaceful place. Today in our podcast series we welcome Ali Kuru and present you the heap of wonder that he prepared for us! The renowned Turkish DJ and producer delights us with a characteristic mixture of slow textured deep beats, oriental sounds, ethnic percussions and jazzy motifs. The mix that Ali prepared for UCR abounds with his original tracks and edits, cosmic disco gems that carry the listeners through lands and cultures to soar their morale and to make their bodies vibrate on the captivating beat. These are powerful charming vibes that give off passion, and unveil Ali's eclectic music taste. Despite the relentless growth in popularity throughout the years and many performances at acclaimed clubs all over Europe, Ali favors living in the nature on the shores of the Aegean Sea over the busy and noisy city life. Is it maybe this simplicity and clearness permitting the artist to listen to his feelings and emotions, and to unleash them through an admirable richness of sounds? We don't know, but we know Ali's rhapsodic talent so let's turn up the volume and be transported by his enchanting sound! Find Ali Kuru: @ali-kuru facebook.com/alikuru.info
After a little break, we are now delighted to welcome ALUNA to our podcast series. ALUNA depicts the joined talents and complementary creations of Maywa and Steffen Kirchhoff, world travellers and soul explorers. Their music project aspires to the creation and spreading of ritualistic music, leading the listeners to reconnect with the Earth, to harmonize with Nature, and with its endless wonders. It's healing music, it's music to dance, it's music to love. Their vision is embodied by their selection of sounds, idyllic melodies, and fascinating vocals, all permeated of Latin American flavours. In fact, their music project finds its origin in the Columbian forests where these beautiful souls first met, as soloist artists. The word ALUNA also descends from the natives of that land. Among the Kogi people, it stands for the “invisible spirit realm”, the source and intelligence of life. After that magic encounter, the two artists gathered again in April 2017 on the shores of the Baltic sea, where their first melodies were produced. This marked the nascence of ALUNA. Since then, the two started their spiritual journey across Europe spreading their message of reconciliation through live-sets, often uplifted by cacao ceremonies. Talking about this set, Steffen stated “For UCR we wanted to create something really unique”, an unparalleled production by two inspired and inspiring artists, created with pure love. The enchanting blend of Maywa's live vocals and Steffen's organic sounds reproduces the vibe of their ceremonial live-sets. The magical journey begins with an invocation by Maywa who gently guides the listeners to connect with themselves, with their higher mind, with their essence, and to open an ethereal connection with the whole, with the elements, with the cosmos. The energy of the moon inspired her to plant the seed for this podcast. A deep travel into her sensibility and vulnerability prepared her soul to connect with the sounds and melodies that would have then composed the podcast. Those drive listeners through heavenly forests, in the inviolate Nature. A travel in space and time till the origin of the world. A dark silent world purely animated by the potential of life to exist. Now lay back comfortable, dim the lights, make sure nobody will disturb the listening. Relax, take a deep breath, and enjoy the journey. Peace. Find ALUNA here: https://soundcloud.com/alunaritualmusic https://soundcloud.com/maywa https://soundcloud.com/steffenkirchhoff
Welcome back Cosmonaut! For this month's radio show we're excited to present you with São Paolo's mystic master of drops: EXZ. As a person rather quiet, his sound speaks volumes of a wild and beautiful mind. His profound and psychedelic productions have their origin about ten years ago, when Alexandre first started to grapple with the piano and different synthesizers. From there he developed his very distinct style, fusing energetically pumping basslines with emotional and touching melodies by creating moving drum patterns that transport Ale's unique groove onto the dancefloor. Instead of composing one rigid live set at a time and touring with it, EXZ likes to stay flexible and so he comes up with a new selection, new narratives and new transitions tailored to occasions, places, or feelings he tries to express. In contrast to the darker mixes Ale plays in his hometown São Paolo, he wanted to share a lighter and happier themed selection with us, perfect for the rising temperatures and longer days. So open up your ears, and let EXZ transport you into his fantasies with this warm summer breeze of a live set. Find EXZ on: soundcloud.com/e_xz facebook.com/EXZ-219077151550832/
Our next urban cosmic-cast was mixed by an artist who needs no introduction. Mimi Love has played herself into the hearts of countless people all over the globe with her signature sound and unforgettable gigs. Her sets are diverse and distinct, and have been known to move people's hearts and feet in equal measure wherever she plays. Although she can often be found discovering unknown territories, Berlin is the place where she loves to take off and land. As a member of the infamous Bachstelzen crew and resident DJ at Katerblau, she is deeply rooted in the German capital, where she has been playing many different roles in “this theatre called underground” for the past 10 years. Her heartwarming style encompasses both slow and fast vibes, spanning a mixture of electronica-ethno, soft rock - downtempo hiphop all the way to what she calls pop-techno. This podcast is peek into her colourful collection, a mix that showcases the different kinds of music she has collected over the past months. It shows us a side of Mimi Love that we don't always get to see in clubs - one that we've very happy to be able to experience for ourselves with her specially curated mix for Urban Cosmonaut Radio. Let's spread the love for Mimi
We are delighted to present the live premiere of Russian producers Geju, who composed a 100-minute live set that will send you free-falling through the Cosmic universe. George Topuridze and Denis Kurchenko are a creative duo based in Moscow. When they aren't hosting the Levelvda events in their hometown, the pair can be found pushing their creative forces as art directors of several projects such as Pinch, Ugolek, Severyane and Sempre. Their music has mesmerised us from the start: 4/4 beats and free floating melodies, monotony vs. polyphony, synthesized textures and ethnic motifs all beautifully intertwined with vocals. We are taken on an emotional journey through delight and darkness, through space and time of what must be a dream or ritual. It seduces you, enchants you, and sets you free - in a whirl of smoke and spices. Find Geju on: https://soundcloud.com/g-e-j-u https://facebook.com/GEJUOFFICIAL
In Vedic philosophy, So'ham (सो ऽहम्) means identifying oneself with the universe or with ultimate reality. This says a lot about our very own Urban Cosmonaut artist, whose incredible music collection is wildly diverse and full of treasures, yet consistent in that each track has an inherent notion of truth that is intangible and gentle and also powerful and driving. His music library is a treasure chest of diamonds in the rough - we can catch a glimpse of it during his long, evolving live performances or in his b2b project “Popov Marconi”, when he plays with his partner in crime; UCR label founder Burntale. So'ham's sets are obsessively curated and expertly mixed on 4 decks, with samples and loops weaving in and out of each other, effortlessly blending together into a textured journey full of ethnic influences and shamanic soundscapes. As a DJ, he imagines his mixtapes being heard on a dance floor, where people are moving with closed eyes and naked skin, falling in love collectively while the music builds and climaxes. And as a producer, he pictures his organic, psychedelic productions being heard in cosy rooms and natural environments, after having consumed what needs to be consumed to open the doors of perception as he would say. And in essence, what's it's all about - being one with your environment, and letting music transport you to where you want to go internally, externally and eternally. So'ham means “I am that” - and if you breathe in and out, chanting So'ham as a mantra, you will experience That: nothing but your true self. When listening to Dandara's tunes, it's easy to hear where he gets his inspiration from. Although he's originally based in Basel, Switzerland, you can currently find him exploring beaches and jungles in South America - where he is touring and travelling the continent, spreading his positive musical vibes as he goes. His sound reflects his interests and philosophy in life: he collects sounds and inspiration from his travels, using them to fuse electronic dance music with ancient and traditional sounds, blurring the boundaries different eras while never losing sight of the omnipotent groove. At times his music is driven and bouncy, sometimes it's ethnic and deep. But at all times, it's the creative result of the environments he is exploring and the experiences that are shaping him. This is an evolving set, taking the listener on a journey through different styles and productions, some of which we have never heard before. In the words of the man himself: “Listen, dance, enjoy”. In a place called Arkhangelsk, on the shore of the White Sea, a musician watches the water flow into the Arctic Ocean. The stars are much brighter, and more twinkly there than here, lighting up the sky in northwestern Russia. Lush forests, harsh climate and a seemingly endless Milky Way are the only – and constant – source of inspiration for our next Urban Cosmonaut Radio artist Donev. His live set is a reflection of the world in which he lives in. You can hear the sound of vast lands in his intro as he looks far into space, onto water, upon trees. And you can feel his love for starry skies, and how he interprets them in his productions. Donev produced this piece of music with a message in mind: to preserve the Earth we live in, and all its beauty and diversity, and to know that this is our unique journey. We wish you a peaceful dive, Urban Cosmonauts. Find Donev on: https://soundcloud.com/do_nev
We're kicking off 2017 with the always vibrant, always spirited Martha van Straaten. She's given us a special podcast to remind us all of our diversity, but also our interconnectedness as human beings on Earth. Voilá her curated selection of tracks that are universally relatable, inspired by our collective's cosmic theme. Her set will send you on spacey inner travels, free-wheeling through your own cosmos to discover the beauty of diversity, nature and multiculturalism in an epic 1,5 hours of damn good music. A self-described collector, her love for combining and putting things together is audible. This mixtape features uniquely different tracks that are entwined so effortlessly, it's like they were meant to be woven together to create something bigger and cohesive. And that's her message to us: that *if we learn to enjoy the differences, oneness will follow* Yes, few of us will ever have the chance to look down from space on to the face of the earth. We probably won't ever witness the Aurora lights from above, or see thunderstorms explode from a bird's eye view, or watch millions of lights of cities and civilizations switch on as the shadow of night chases the daylight away. Yet we've all wondered about how tiny we humans are in this infinite universe. And infinite though it may be, our world is unified; a place without borders, with a lot of colours, animals and happiness. So before you press play, Martha left us instructions to watch this short video about the “Overview Effect” first, which affects astronauts when they look down on planet earth: https://youtu.be/CHMIfOecrlo ….and last but not least, some words that came from her
Some say music is a matter of the heart. Others say it's mathematics. But our next Urban Cosmonaut Radio artist thinks about music in his own way: he imagines the architecture in which he creates soundscapes, and then conjures up a narrative for melodies and rhythms. Kurup's music is unexpected. It catches you off guard, constantly fusing themes in unusual musical trips on the dance floor. His sound journeys are colourful, full of character, different elements and little surprises. They are possibly somewhat a mirror of himself: a multi-platform digital artist, collector of stories and lover of carneval hailing from Brazil. Kurup's roots lie in Cerrado, one of the most lush tropical savannas in the world and home to thousands of colourful species, bizarre tree formations and what he calls mosaic habitats. Perhaps this is where he draws inspiration for his producing, an endeavour he started 2 years ago after DJing for years on CDJs before moving on to vinyl, until finally crossing the digital frontier with his live sets. Influenced by the tropicalia movement in Brazil that has brought life to a new way of experimenting with local as well as global music, what you're about to hear in this next Urban Cosmonaut Radio podcast is something we at UCR are constantly searching for: something fresh, unique, and with a beautiful story. We advise you to do as he does, and try to preserve that special ability we have as children: to listen and transform anything we hear with our imagination. Let's see where it takes us ❤ Find Kurup on: https://soundcloud.com/ku_rup https://www.facebook.com/kurup.sounds
Somewhere, way up there in a galaxy far, far away, there was a boy floating around in space. This boy's head was filled with sounds so trippy, so unique and so melancholic – that when an idea came, it was unlike anything you'd ever heard before. The boy's ears were filled with endless amounts of recycled stardust – so that whenever he put on his headphones to make music, everything he created sounded like heaven. And the boy's mind was constantly buzzing with impulses – so that whenever he expressed himself, they came pouring out of him in the form of sublime music. To us, he is known as Ninze. Ninze is multi-faceted, yet utterly recognisable in his style. Having first taken the music scene by storm with unique productions and famously slo-ow DJ sets alongside his 2nd half Okaxy, he has since evolved as a solo artist as well as a member of the production- and live performance trio Wide Awake. No matter what he does, you can always hear it: that distinct sound that makes your knees feel like jelly and your thoughts like cloudy shadows. It's a vibe that transports you to a place in your mind, something in between diving into trippy underwater melancholia and shooting up into deep cosmic space. It's only fitting then that our next podcast is a live set recorded specially for the Urban Cosmic Universe. If you listen closely, you'll notice the little shooting stars, pulling you deeper and deeper into a world you can lose yourself in with ease. Arutani - an almost extinct language spoken by native inhabitants in Roraima, Venezuela. Arutani - a young and especially talented producer hailing from Caracas, Venezuela. Arutani - our next Urban Cosmonaut Radio artist, taking us on a trip through the cosmic universe. For those amongst you cosmonauts who are drawn to melancholy, enchanted by spherical sounds and driven by all things deep; we've got something special in store for you. This next podcast is a voyage through the mind and soul of a young artist who has tickled our ears ever since his first forays into music production. Consisting exclusively of his own tracks, Arutani has given us a podcast that showcases his distinct sound: minimal, dark, organic and slow. With his creative percussions, soulful melodies and deep atmospheres, he has created music that is inspired by his roots but also goes beyond any existing genre. His productions are unmistakeable in vibe and moving in emotion, gently urging us to reflect on ourselves in the process. When you travel to a foreign place, chances are you'd rather experience it through the eyes of a local. Someone who knows the hidden gems of the city, who understands how to move from one place to the next. Our next Urban Cosmonaut has done just that - this podcast isn't just a bunch of tracks mixed together, oh no. It's a carefully selected guide into the emotive experience of Mateo - a Colombian artist living in New York by day, and musical story teller at night. He's curated a mix that shows his roots in the Spanish language - with vocals and instruments by Simon Dias, Mercedes Sosa and Guillermo Rodriguez Fiffe - combined with his contemporary influences in multicultural electronic music. As a DJ whose biggest influence was Pink Floyd - a band that broke through sound boundaries and kickstarted an era of psychedelia and experimental music - it's fascinating to hear where his exquisite taste came from, forming a distinctively recognizable sound that resonates with the label he's shaping along with founder Sainte Vie at Akumandra. This set is a combination of deep and melancholic entranced beats with distinctive tribal sounds, soulful instruments and ethnic vocals capable of moving us deep inside. We're so grateful for a wonderful trip that touches the soul and tickles the heart and say thank you, Mateo! Enjoy, friends. Light, love and Lemurian ...is all we need to awaken our senses. Podcast #29 was created specially for the Urban Cosmonaut Radioverse and consists of unreleased & mesmerizing productions, collaborations and remixes that come together in a gentle wave of beautiful melancholy. Describing his own music as an “ear massage” that translates downtempo vibrations of love, his sound is soulful, ethnic and shamanic. Heavily influenced by the music of Nicolas Jaar and Nu, the native Peruvian started producing music at 17 upon his arrival in America in an effort to express what was inside himself when mixing wasn't enough. And although his own productions touches listeners from all corners of the globe, Lemurian hasn't forgotten his roots and regularly seeks inspiration from his mystical home of Peru. This podcast is a true expression of just that - his unique self: influenced by many cultures, driven by a sense of melancholy and bound to transcend barriers. It's funny how sometimes, you know that you're boarding a vehicle to go on a trip without knowing exactly what the destination will be. Our next Urban Cosmonaut Radio Ship pilot #28, Luis Rosenberg, is known for doing just that - showing himself and his passengers just how many colours of the rainbow exist, and how many ways there are to explore them. If Luis Rosenberg were an art collector, people from all over the world of all ages and tastes would stand in line to admire his exhibitions. The Austrian born, Berlin-based DJ has a refined taste for music that makes him truly un-prejudiced. He doesn't discriminate in his choices - as long as it has groove, it will catch his ear. Luis tends to select tracks for his eclectic sets that are interchangeably timeless, unique and innovative - a tendency that is reflected in the music of his biggest influences: Bob Dylan, Nicolas Jaar and Acid Pauli. Having started out of passion in 2006 with A Numark „DJ IN A BOX“ set, loads of vinyls from the flea market and a cassette tape recorder to record his first mixtapes, this next mixtape is one that will surprise you, make you smile in recognition and gasp in surprise at the lack of genre boundaries or style restrictions. As a wise man once said: anything goes, as long as it has groove. To quote Luis' favourite sentence in “Never Ending Story”: Fantasia is the world of human fantasy. Every part, every creature is a piece of the dreams and hopes of mankind. Therefore it has no boundary. Follow Luis Rosenberg on: https://soundcloud.com/luisrosenberg
For our next podcast we present to you the Berlin-based, yet world-grown Caleesi. The “mother of dragons and lover of magical festivals” is one of those artists able to tell multi-faceted and fascinating stories – expect a thousand and one legends in one musical pilgrimage in her sets. Her mixes beautifully intertwine sounds, rhythms and melodies that will teletransport you to eras, destinations and cultures yet to be discovered. Her sound builds on deep basslines and moody tunes - but for this podcast, she explored a more rhythmic side, including more pulsating and tribal melodies to her already smooth and spirited sound. We embrace and salute Caleesi, who, with her profound harmonies, will surely take you on a voyage of multi-cultural narratives. The following Urban Cosmonaut Radio artist is a multi-layered musical spur, grabbing the world by storm. We proudly welcome Pigmalião. Also known as Daniel Lucas, Pigmalião is a Brazilian producer and honcho of the Latin American music label Frente Bolivarista. Using Brazil's complex ethnic history as canvas, he takes his music from there to numerous sources, free of local, provincial or national ideas. This makes of Pigmalião a truly cosmopolitan artist. His sound transcends and takes us, vivid listeners, on a voyage of global serenades and transcultural melodies. This mix indeed goes way beyond his Latin American roots. As a matter of fact, this particular set – recorded live at KaterBlau this past 22 July – is a multifaceted fusion of cadence and multiregional tunes that ebb and flow in one musical expedition. For Pigmalião, music is proof of how united we all are as a human race and this set is a lucid testimony of it. We will be taken on an eclectic road of percussions, vocals and cadence from here, there and everywhere. Would you fancy coming along? When the past fuses with the present, you'll find us immersed in Barrio Lindo, flipping through his musical sketchbook of colourful landscapes from South America. Influenced by traditional music from Bolivia, Peru and Colombia, our Urban Cosmonaut Radio guide #25 creates music that somehow reminds the listener of the roots of contemporary music while still breaking the boundaries of genre, time and locality. His music is eclectic in the sense that it doesn't fit any boxes, and at the same time instantly recognizable through his signature knocking percussions, colourful soundscapes and rhythmically erratic heartbeat phrases. Barrio Lindo's taste in music was born in Colombia, in the sound of the rivers and the chants of marimbas and drums. When he's not making music, he's making instruments - and playing around with old techniques, mixing them with digital production, finding a balance between traditional and contemporary ways of expressing himself. After doing a Chancha Via Circuito workshop with Sidirum and Barda, he started producing music in 2012 and has evolved a lot since then. We're grateful for the podcast we're about to listen to, which includes fresh material from his collaborative project History of Colour with El Buho. Which wonders await us, we wonder. Please meet Ricardo Vincenzo, your shaman from Sao Paolo for the next hour in the next Urban Cosmonaut Radio podcast #24. But he's not just a shaman - he's also an avid collector of samples and an audio collage enthusiast with exquisite taste in forgotten old songs and Brazilian tropicalia infused music. In a melange of leftover samples, organic shamanic sounds and spiritual tunes, we are immersed in sounds and spheres unique to him. Having learned the piano as a kid, Ricardo had been making experimental music for a few years before starting his solo project, which he describes as having more dance floor friendly elements. His productions are inflenced by funk carioca music, which also produced as live sets with samples, repetitive phases and vocal percussions. Our next podcast is a special live set by the Paris-based musicians Nato & Sahalé. Individually, they bring us to worlds of ethnic vocals, percussions and wonderfully tantalizing melodies - each in their own special way. For the 23rd Urban Cosmonaut Radio podcast, they have combined their powers in a timeless live set that takes listeners on a gentle journey through mysterious lands of the oriental past. Inspired by their travels and diverse musical influences, this set is the symbiosis of computer scientist Nato and sound craftsman Sahalé. Their productions take their time in building up, releasing in vast spheres of melody, haunting voices and tribal rhythms. We close our eyes, letting them guide us to distant moons in different galaxies, knowing that with Nato & Sahalé, a kind of delicate beauty will engulf us if we trust them enough to follow them on a trip through cosmic portals of endless, profound music. Our next Urban Cosmonaut Radio artist is a tornado of visceral musical energy. Felipe Torquato, otherwise known as Spaniol, is a Brazilian producer and founder of the famous party series Sonido Tropico in Sao Paolo. His productions reflect a creative spirit stimulated since his time in a classical music conservatory at age 9, having been surrounded and influenced by Brazilian classical music, 70s psychedelic rock and Gigolo records from the early 2000s (no joke) for much of his life. His music moves with rhythms that get your feet antsy, whirling up dance floors in playful bursts of melody, bouncing sounds and complex layers of cumbia-induced percussions. In the next episode of our Urban Cosmonaut Radio show, he has selected music that intertwines Brazilian folk, contemporary eclectica and ethno slow house in a colourful rainbow of music. ***We're happy to follow him wherever he takes us, shakes us, breaks us *** Find Spaniol on: https://soundcloud.com/s_paniol www.facebook.com/spaniolsonido https://soundcloud.com/sonidotropico
I come from a place beyond the border I live in the space between the lines I am the black gold of the sun These are the words of Noema, the sound shaman, producer and DJ who has long graced us with organic, sexy journeys and trippy-shizzle-galore frenzies of psychedelic rhythm. In this podcast, we are gently taken by the hand and guided from darkness into light. Slowly oscillating back and forth and left and right in subtle cumbia drives, he takes us to a place beyond the border in the next Urban Cosmonaut Radio podcast #021 Originally from Wiesbaden in Germany, Noema is currently based in Berlin and has found a second home in Brazil, where he feels a deep connection to the music that has influenced his vibe immensely. Among the artists that have shaped his sense of musical aesthetic are Esbjörn Svensson, Matthew Herbert, Marvin Gaye, John Gage, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Voodoohop, the traces of whom can be found in Noema's eclectic selections. Noema is the founder of the Magic Movement, a platform that supports and pushes extraordinary artists of psychedelic, organic and transcultural music that aren't yet known in Europe. Vruno quotes Violeta Parra: music is a free bird flying. Born in Valparaiso, Chile, this bird has flown to many places - absorbing inspiration from Mexico City, Reno, Cancun, Carrillo Puerto, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Prague and Berlin and translating them into his own productions. A believer of the power of musical vibrations, Vruno's sound has an ancestral feel that resonates from within. As long as he can remember, he has heard music in his head - music that he needed to externalize by “printing” them onto speakers for the world around him to listen. Moved by the wonders of the planet we live in, his music is organic and celebratory, with ethnic elements woven into a multitude of textures. This mix consists 100% of his own productions and was recorded in Prague whilst watching the sunset with a spectacular view. Conveying a somewhat spatial sound, it embodies the global beat we Urban Cosmonauts want to convey: with a constant motor of rhythm propelling us to melodic heights and organic symphonies of sounds. Mistura tudo! We are all stars We are made Of recycled star dust A fusion of cosmic energy A spiral of the cosmic fugue Rippling out In all directions Of love. Our next Urban Cosmonaut personifies the essence of this podcast series. Peter Power's music is a multi-dimensional exploration of sounds that takes the reader on a voyage, to a ritual gathering in a sacred temple, where we find ourselves in the heart of the jungle on a remote planet, spiraling into percussive, vocal and atmospheric loops blended with music from around the world. Peter Power is a medium. He saturates himself with input from the ambience of his environment, from the beating of his own and others' hearts. Channeling his inspirations into mixes that oscillate, vibrate, pulsate, girate, elongate - his own edits, remixes and productions reveal a celestial sound that is unique to him. After emerging from a darker place these past few years, this mix is his attempt to reconnect with the warmer light of humanity. We asked Peter what his third eye means to him. His answer: it's the feedback between inner and outer self. We'll take that as an impulse and let him guide us to a sacred place inside ourselves and outside the constraints of the body self. How do you catch a cloud and pin it down? How do you catch a moonbeam in your hand? How do you describe a sound that knows no genre? The answer is: you can't. At least not in Mika Dutsch's case: his taste is colourful, timeless, genre-blind and all encompassing. His influences are as diverse as his sound is uplifting, somehow reaching for the sun in an intangible vibe you can't quite define. Mika was born and raised in an idyllic village of 200 souls somewhere near Hamburg, where he still lives on a farm that he made his home. It is here that he draws his peace after having lost himself in the craziness of urban cities - and it is here that his musical journey began, with his first drum set that he set up in his neighbour's shack at 14, quickly discovering the wondrous possibilities of a tape recorder and some techno records shortly after. Listening to his mixtape reveals an ear for surprises and a creative style of mixing that is unique to Mika Dutsch. It's easy for us to follow him on this voyage : never demanding the listener's attention, he gently guides us down his path, encouraging us to look forward to whatever awaits us at the end of the rainbow. Inspired by the sunshine that made Mika happy, this set reverberates with a warmth, that gives us hope for lighter days to come. We continue our journey with Dogu Civicik, a selfdescribed “guy with a funny last name and an unquenchable thirst for music”. Our next Urban Cosmonaut is somewhat disillusioned with adult life: he strives to recreate sentiments from the past, when everything seemed clear and simple, and when the music persisted long after its time. While his style fluctuates in tune with his current mood, the music itself is meant to be anything but temporary. It's meant to last long after the ebb and flow of genres and styles has died down. “My roots lie in Anatolia so does my soul, and so does my music.” His work is infused with the sounds of his heritage that helped Dogu Civicik grow into who he is: an artist who has never known the limitations of genres, growing up listening to 70's jazz and funk and being exposed to traditional Turkish music from his grandfather. This mixtape is a mélange of Dogu's own edits and productions, inspired by feelings of misanthropy when he's confronted by the current state of society. If you listen closely, you can hear the tension and the melancholy and if you listen even closer, you can feel the mood that shaped this special podcast in our series. To quote Dogu Civicik: the wound is the place where light enters you. Enjoy! Happy New Year, Urban Cosmonauts! Find Dogu on: https://soundcloud.com/dogucivicik
To characterize a chameleon, “our heroine has known both holy & horrendous”. Her edits reveal the darker sides of the moon most of us think we don't want to see. Her sets are a collage of her own self: dreamy, strangely healing and infused in mysticism. Such is the complexity that completes C.love, who creates under the names Courtney Rexach, Zouyina, and Sisters of Z. C.love understands her music as an audio pathway to other realities. We see her as a guide, leading us through a gateway to other galaxies to worlds that are tainted with natural elements and delightfully deranging sounds. This next podcast in our Urban Cosmonaut Radio series was named “Le Chemin de l'Hiver”: inspired by the growing length of the dark night, the death and rebirth of the seasons and the fire that lit the mountain studio in which this mixtape was created. A child of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, hailing from LA with roots in Mauguio, France, C.love has selected 25 tracks, none of whom were left untouched by the artist, all of whom reflect her unique flavour. We leave you now with these words, written by the artist herself in a message to you, the listener: “My Conversation with the Mountain goes like listening grows like lichen all over her rocky breasts. My Dance on the Mountain knows like animal trails leading through soft brush shows like swift patterns Leading through the grass. Once upon a time, there was a 13 year old boy who fell in love at first sight with an old Brazilian violao. That boy was Salvador Araguaya, Urban Cosmonaut Radio podcaster #13 in our trip through the musicverse. His first guitar triggered a lifelong musical adventure, spending 7 years exploring different genres, playing in many bands and nurturing a love for ancestral black music of northeastern Brazil. Inevitably, he was enchanted by Voodoohop's fusion of electronic and Brazilian sounds and eventually started making music in the beginning of 2015. Since then, Salvador Araguaya has moved and swayed the dancefloors with his DJ sets at many Sonido Tropico (@sonidotropico) parties. His recent own productions like “Cotovelo de Serra” on Caballito have given us a glimpse of the start of his musical evolution. His own tracks are infused with digital cumbia elements and traces of folk and ethnic deep house like in “Mora na Filosofia (Caetano Veloso)” as well as in this mixtape that you're about to hear. TXÄI is the indigenous name of the next Urban Cosmonaut in this series, meaning: more than a friend, more than a brother, half of him lives in you and half of you in him, a fusion of artist and listener. While listening to his mixtape – you fall in and out, back and forth, left and right between continents and tribes, expressions and sounds, beats and melodies. What started as a New Year's Eve party playlist 3 years ago quickly became a journey into the world of mixing music. Eventually, this led to the birth of ‘CasaCaos' – a musical collective of passionate, chaoscontaminated bodies channeling their exploration of music in an online label. Many of the tracks in Urban Cosmonaut Podcast #12 are upcoming CasaCaos label releases, blended in with forest sound samples, an outtake of a Brazilian poem by Manuel Bandeira and a mosaic of a frenetic/acid/wet Txäi favourites, recorded at 4 am after waking up to the sound of silence. “I am a constant weather change” says Matheus Gama, whose endless music is a play of sounds and silences. For Gama who lives in Rio de Janeiro but belongs to nowhere the cities we live in are frenetic, chaotic, hard places for sensitive people. This mix was created as a break – - - - - - where listeners can disconnect from the frenzy of everyday life. But if you listen closely, you'll hear a symphony of sounds – voices and drums, jingles and claps, basses and organic rhythms. Noises you've heard a thousand times before but cannot place, and slow drives that oscillate back and forth until finally they become one dynamic reverie. Gama's sound is one that slips out of your hands and into the atmosphere...when you try to hold it long enough to describe it. “Q: What inspired this podcast? A: It was created in the days when spring begins, and then the spring never came.” Barda's galactic Urban Cosmonaut Radio podcast #10 was born in longing for blooming flowers and sunny days in Buenos Aires...and yet it's a colourful hybrid of melancholy, warmth and cumbia rhythms, taking us on a ride through the Patagonian steppe where we dance to sayas and cumbias, traces of dub and minimal, sounds of guitars and synths, and memories of Peruvian chicha. The next set in this series is an eclectic blend of Cecilia Gebhard aka Barda's own productions, remixes and mashups. Her musical roots are influenced by the textures of trip hop, electronic downtempo and her very first musical memory of The Beatles performing “Let It Be” on TV as a young child. After. singing and playing drums and guitar in rock bands as a teenager, she started producing music in 2013. Spring may never have come to Buenos Aires, but something beautiful blossomed here in the Urban Cosmic Universe. Let's see where it takes us.
