They explore McCarthy's analysis of financialization as a deliberate class project to dismantle working-class power and exacerbate inequality. They look at the historical shift from a robust Social Security system to a privatized, financialized pension system as well as the rise of neoliberal policies post-1970s, facilitated by monetary policy changes (anybody remember the gold standard?) The conversation goes into the failure of both traditional and direct democracies to serve the working class. The episode also weaves through MMT perspectives and the impact of government policies. They touch on the potential of public banking and democratizing finance to empower the working class as well as the challenges of implementing these ideas.Michael A. Jonathan Blake and Nils Gilman join us to discuss their recent book, Children of a Modest Star: Planetary Thinking for an Age of Crises, in which they propose a framework of "planetary thinking" to address the interconnected crises facing humanity. Drawing on historical lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the eradication of smallpox, among other examples, Blake and Gilman advocate for moving beyond traditional state-centered responses. They urge a reorientation toward systemic, planetary-scale challenges that acknowledge humanity's deep entanglement with ecological and biogeochemical systems. In this episode, we explore why "planetarity" is an idea whose time has come, the limitations of anthropocentric institutions, the practicalities of planetary governance in a world marked by socio-political differences, and the critical role of new epistemological frameworks in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and global security. Jonathan Blake is the Associate Director of Programs at the Berggruen Institute, where he oversees research projects and the broader research agenda for the Planetary Program. A political scientist with a PhD from UC Berkeley, his work focuses on planetary politics, ethnic conflict, and migration, among other topics. His writing has appeared in Noema, where he serves as Associate Editor, as well as in The Atlantic, Boston Review, The Nation, Los Angeles Review of Books, and various academic journals. Nils Gilman is the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President at the Berggruen Institute and also serves as Deputy Editor of Noema Magazine. He is the author of Mandarins of the Future: Modernization Theory in Cold War America (2004), Deviant Globalization: Black Market Economy in the 21st Century (2011), and Children of a Modest Star: Planetary Thinking for an Age of Crises (2024). Holding a Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate in History from UC Berkeley, Gilman is a historian and political theorist with a career spanning academia and consultancy in international security. His work has contributed to foundational insights on climate security and governance, and his writings frequently explore the limitations of current institutions in addressing planetary-scale crises, positioning him as a leading voice in reimagining governance frameworks for the Anthropocene. What if we saw Artificial Intelligence as a mirror rather than as a form of intelligence? That's the subject of a fabulous new book by Professor Shannon Vallor, who is my guest on this episode. In our discussion, we explore how artificial intelligence reflects not only our technological prowess but also our ethical choices, biases, and the collective values that shape our world. We also discuss how AI systems mirror our societal flaws, raising critical questions about accountability, transparency, and the role of ethics in AI development. Shannon helps me to examine the risks and opportunities presented by AI, particularly in the context of decision-making, privacy, and the potential for AI to influence societal norms and behaviours. This episode offers a thought-provoking exploration of the intersection between technology and ethics, urging us to consider how we can steer AI development in a direction that aligns with our shared values. Guest Biography Prof. Shannon Vallor is the Baillie Gifford Chair in the Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence at the Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI) at the University of Edinburgh, where she is also appointed in Philosophy. She is Director of the Centre for Technomoral Futures in EFI, and co-Director of the BRAID (Bridging Responsible AI Divides) programme, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Professor Vallor's research explores how new technologies, especially AI, robotics, and data science, reshape human moral character, habits, and practices. Her work includes advising policymakers and industry on the ethical design and use of AI. She is a standing member of the One Hundred Year Study of Artificial Intelligence (AI100) and a member of the Oversight Board of the Ada Lovelace Institute. Professor Vallor received the 2015 World Technology Award in Ethics from the World Technology Network and the 2022 Covey Award from the International Association of Computing and Philosophy. She is a former Visiting Researcher and AI Ethicist at Google. In addition to her many articles and published educational modules on the ethics of data, robotics, and artificial intelligence, she is the author of the book Technology and the Virtues: A Philosophical Guide to a Future Worth Wanting (Oxford University Press, 2016) and The AI Mirror: Reclaiming Our Humanity in an Age of Machine Thinking (Oxford University Press, 2024).
I'm just back from the Liberalism for the 21st Century conference in DC which featured a lively discussion about digital misinformation between KEEN ON regular Jonathan Rauch and Renee DiResta, the author of Invisible Rulers. As the former manager of the Stanford Internet Observatory, DiResta has been on the front lines of the disinformation wars and understands the chillingly close relationship between making something trend on social media and making it appear “true”. Her work focuses on those supposedly invisible people, our new ontological masters, who, she believes, turn lies into reality. Given that the 2024 election will be determined by which candidates' version of reality is more ontologically convincing to the American electorate, DiResta's well-informed perspective is an essential guide to how liberalism can not only survive but also flourish in the 21st century. Renée DiResta was the technical research manager at the Stanford Internet Observatory, a cross-disciplinary program of research, teaching, and policy engagement for the study of abuse in information technologies. Her work examines rumors and propaganda in the digital age. She has analyzed geopolitical campaigns created by foreign powers such as Russia, China, and Iran; voting‑ related rumors that led to the January 6 insurrection; and health misinformation and conspiracy theories pushed by domestic influencers. She is a contributor at The Atlantic. Her bylined writing has appeared in Wired, Foreign Affairs, Columbia Journalism Review, New York Times, Washington Post, Yale Review, The Guardian, POLITICO, Slate, and Noema, as well as many academic journals. bDiResta has been a Presidential Leadership Scholar (a program run by the Presidents Bush, Clinton, and the LBJ Foundations); named an Emerson Fellow, a Truman National Security Project fellow, Mozilla Fellow in Media, Misinformation, and Trust, a Harvard Berkman-Klein affiliate, and a Council on Foreign Relations term member.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. We are living out best GQT (IFYKYK) life - live and direct from 17 Midland Road Gallery! Join us in the usual chaos of conversation as we speak to OG No.1 photoslut Michael Swann all about 'Noema' at his Bristol book launch and exhibition! In 1961, in the small Spanish village of San Sebastian de Garabandal, four young girls had an apparition of the Virgin Mary. They entered a state of ecstasy in which they became completely unaware of their surroundings and sensory perceptions. Reportedly, witnesses would pinch the girls, pierce their skin with needles, lift them up and drop them onto rough rocks, and yet they remained entranced. The light and presence of the Virgin is all they claim to have experienced.Twenty years later, in the town of Medjugorje, Bosnia & Herzegovina, six children also had simultaneous visions of the Virgin, with similar ecstatic qualities. These visions have persisted for the last forty years, with several of the seers continuing to experience regular visitations today, often in the presence of hundreds of pilgrims.Noema is a body of work that investigates the aura of place and religious experience by searching for signs of the Virgin Mary's presence in these two locations. Chat GPT, an AI powered chat-bot, has become the world's fastest growing application, with over 100 million users in the first month of its launch. Even its harshest critics concede that when interacting with Chat GPT, it can seem as if one is talking to an intelligent machine. But, the standard critique goes, that's just an illusion. Chat GPT isn't in fact intelligent. It doesn't understand the questions it's asked, or the answers it gives. But, what if this critique is wrong? What if our elevation of human understanding to something that machines like Chat GPT can't reach is mere narcissism, or worse, a philosophical mistake? What if, what current AI can do isn't really possible without some robust level of understanding? Reuben Cohn- Gordon is an AI researcher at the Iniversity of British Columbia and UC Berkeley, and recently wrote an article entitled GPT's very Inhuman Mind for Noema magazine, in which he argues against the standard critique of large language models like Chat GPT, namely that they lack any form of intelligence and understanding. Reuben uses a number of ideas from 20th century philosophy in approaching this, as well as intriguing metaphors from Classic Roman literature. INTRODUCING Coffee and Cases - What happened to Dulce Alavez? Please enjoy this feed drop from our friends Allison and Maggie over at the Coffee and Cases podcast! It was supposed to be a fun day at the park when Noema, along with her 3-year-old son, met both her 5-year-old daughter and her 8-year-old sister at the bus stop after school. She took the kids to get ice-cream before heading to Bridgeton City Park in New Jersey on September 16th, 2019. Noema's son and daughter bounded out of the car to begin playing. She stayed behind in the car to help her sister with homework before they would join in the fun. However, not even 30 minutes into their visit, the day became a nightmare for Noema when she realized that her son was still on the playground but that her 5-year-old daughter, Dulce, was nowhere to be seen. Now, more than three years later, we are still asking, “What happened to Dulce Alavez?” TRUE CRIME AND PARANORMAL PODCAST FESTIVAL THIS YEAR IN AUSTIN AUGUST 25 - 27, 2023!

Terms such as artificial intelligence, big data and machine learning bring to mind computers processing loads of data into uses for the real world. But the authors of a recent essay published in the magazine Noema say the truth is much uglier, and often ignored. “Far from the sophisticated, sentient machines portrayed in media and pop culture, so-called AI systems are fueled by millions of underpaid workers around the world, performing repetitive tasks under precarious labor conditions,” they write in the essay, “The Exploited Labor Behind Artificial Intelligence.” One of the authors, Timnit Gebru, lost her job at Google for raising ethical concerns about AI, and now advocates for better practices and regulations to protect people. Another, Adrienne Williams, is a former Amazon delivery driver who organized in protest of unsafe conditions. They join us to discuss the hidden dangers and ethical questions surrounding AI. Guests: Adrienne Williams, a former Amazon delivery driver and organizer. Timnit Gebru, computer scientist and artificial intelligence researcher.
After what we'll call a mid-season break 'The Production Line' is returning with the wonderful Noema Te Hau! Noema is an Auckland based producer/writer/artist/guitarist and bandleader known for his work with the likes of Alayna, REED, NEVERKNOWN and Paige. He met the Paige whilst teaching at MAINZ and has since become and integral part of her team as bandleader. Noema is a connector at the heart of the Auckland music scene, now the studio manager at Joel Little's recently opened Big Fan Studios. We had a great conversation discussing his love for pop god Max Martin, vulnerability in songwriting and get the breakdown on Alayna's new song 'Cheery Trees' produced by Noema. As always... an unmissable one.
RC100: Rotation Curves of 100 Massive Star-Forming Galaxies at z=0 6-2 5 Reveal Little Dark Matter on Galactic Scales by A. Nestor Shachar et al. on Monday 26 September We analyze Ha or CO rotation curves (RCs) extending out to several galaxy effective radii for 100 massive, large, star-forming disk galaxies (SFGs) across the peak of cosmic galaxy star formation (z~0.6-2.5), more than doubling the previous sample presented by Genzel et al. (2020) and Price et al. (2021). The observations were taken with SINFONI and KMOS integral-field spectrographs at ESO-VLT, LUCI at LBT, NOEMA at IRAM, and ALMA. We fit the major axis kinematics with beam-convolved, forward models of turbulent rotating disks with bulges embedded in dark matter (DM) halos, including the effects of pressure support. The fraction of dark to total matter within the disk effective radius ($R_e ~ 5 kpc$), $f_DM (R_e)=V_{DM}^2 (R_e)/V_{circ}^2 (R_e)$, decreases with redshift: At z~1 (z~2) the median DM fraction is $0.38pm 0.23$ ($0.27pm 0.18$), and a third (half) of all galaxies are "maximal" disks with $f_{DM} (R_e)2.5 M_{odot} yr^{-1} kpc^{-2}$) and galaxies with massive bulges ($M_{bulge}>10^{10} M_{odot}$). A combination of stellar or active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback, and/or heating due to dynamical friction, either from satellite accretion or clump migration, may drive the DM from cuspy into cored mass distributions. The observations plausibly indicate an efficient build-up of massive bulges and central black holes at z~2 SFGs. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.12199v1
Disentangling protoplanetary disk gas mass and carbon depletion through combined atomic and molecular tracers by J. A. Sturm et al. on Tuesday 20 September The total disk gas mass and elemental C, N, O composition of protoplanetary disks are crucial ingredients for our understanding of planet formation. Measuring the gas mass is complicated, since H$_2$ cannot be detected in the cold bulk of the disk and the elemental abundances with respect to hydrogen are degenerate with gas mass in all disk models. We present new NOEMA observations of CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O and optically thin C$^{17}$O $J$=2-1 lines, and use additional high angular resolution Atacama Large Millimeter Array millimeter continuum and CO data to construct a representative model of LkCa 15. The transitions that constrain the gas mass and carbon abundance most are C$^{17}$O 2-1, N${_2}$H$^+$ 3-2 and HD 1-0. Using these three molecules we find that the gas mass in the LkCa 15 disk is $M_mathrm{g}=0.01 ^{+0.01}_{-0.004} M_{odot}$, a factor of six lower than estimated before. The carbon abundance is C/H = ($3 pm 1.5) times10^{-5}$, implying a moderate depletion of elemental carbon by a factor of 3-9. All other analyzed transitions also agree with these numbers, within a modeling uncertainty of a factor of two. Using the resolved ce{C2H} image we find a C/O ratio of $sim$1, which is consistent with literature values of H$_2$O depletion in this disk. The lack of severe carbon depletion in the LkCa 15 disk is consistent with the young age of the disk, but contrasts with the higher depletions seen in older cold transition disks. Combining optically thin CO isotopologue lines with N$_2$H$^+$ is promising to break the degeneracy between gas mass and CO abundance. The moderate level of depletion for this source with a cold, but young disk, suggests that long carbon transformation timescales contribute to the evolutionary trend seen in the level of carbon depletion among disk populations, rather than evolving temperature effects and presence of dust traps alone. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.09286v1

Cymene and Dominic talk about hauling ice, champagne socialism and the mystery of Viennetta cakes on this week's intro. Then (16:07) we are joined by Troy Vettese, an environmental historian, and Drew Pendergrass, an environmental engineer, to talk about their bold and imaginative new book, Half-Earth Socialism: A Plan to Save the Future from Extinction, Climate Change and Pandemics (Verso 2022, https://www.versobooks.com/books/3818-hal). We begin with the value of thinking in impractical ways and how utopian socialists past like Edward Bellamy, William Morris and Otto Neurath inspired this project. We discuss how high growth expectations have bedeviled planning in the past and talk about the flaws in the utopia of automated luxury socialism. Is capitalism an inherently irrational system? Does planning have irrational tendencies too? We cover where the idea to make a game version of the book came from (https://play.half.earth). We move from there to what the Left could stand to learn from the tactics of the neoliberal revolution, the necessity of utopian imagination for mass organizing, how intellectuals underestimate the readiness of the working class for change and much, much, more. Also please check out Drew and Troy's Noema essay based on the book at: https://www.noemamag.com/planning-an-eco-socialist-utopia/

In December 2021, Senator Joe Manchin appeared on Fox News to announce that he would not vote for Joe Biden's signature climate plan, Build Back Better. The reason he cited? A score given by the Congressional Budget Office. The Congressional Budget Office – or CBO for short – is the most important government agency you've never heard of. It acts as a budget referee, giving legislation a score on how it will impact the economy and the federal budget. Senator Chuck Grassley once called the CBO “God” on Capitol Hill. Its scores determine which legislation passes and which legislation dies. But there's one big catch. The CBO is systematically leaving out the impacts of climate change and carbon pollution on the economy – and stacking the deck against climate legislation. Lawmakers have the power to change it. Will they? Guests: Dr. Mark Paul is an assistant professor of economics and environmental studies at New College of Florida. You can read his article about the CBO in Noema. Was ist Zeit? Was ist Fantasie?

The first segment in this episode focuses on the Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies Act, known as the EARN IT Act. Nathalie Maréchal, Ph.D., Senior Policy and Partnerships Manager at Ranking Digital Rights, wrote in Tech Policy Press about what motivates her opposition to the legislation, and she joined the podcast to share her perspective. The second segment takes on the idea of tech exceptionalism. Yaël Eisenstat, a Future of Democracy Fellow at the Berggruen Institute and Nils Gilman, vice president of programs at the Berggruen Institute and the deputy editor of Noema Magazine, wrote in Noema about "How tech uses the promise of endless innovation to ward off regulating even its present-day harms."

You can probably make a list of high profile missing child cases that you've heard of over the years - Cleo Smith, Elizabeth Smart and even Caylee Anthony. But there are thousands of missing children that slip through the cracks of the system, every single day. In 2020 in the US, over 30,000 juveniles were reported missing. In the first episode of the True Crime Society podcast for 2022, we discuss the cases of missing children Michael ‘Monkey' Vaughan and Dulce Alavez. Michael is a 5 year old, boisterous little boy who loved monster trucks and playing in the dirt. He was playing Nintendo in July 2021, when his dad left the room to attend to Michael's baby sister. When his father returned, Michael was gone. Now, six months later, no trace of Michael has been found and police believe he may have been abducted. In September 2019 in Bridgeton, NJ, Dulce Alavez and her little brother Manuel were treated to an ice cream by their mother, Noema. They then went to the local playground to use the swings. Noema helped a relative with some homework and when she looked up, Manuel's ice cream was on the ground and he was crying. Dulce was nowhere to be seen. More than two years later, Dulce remains missing. Police have released both a sketch of a possible suspect and an age progressed image of Dulce, to no avail. We also discuss the current case of missing child Lina Khil. Lina went missing from a playground in San Antonio , TX in December 2021 . Her mother allegedly turned away to get some water and Lina vanished within minutes. Noema is a magazine looking at some of the biggest issues of the 21st century - AI, the climate crisis, the future of democracy and capitalism. Its Executive Editor Kathleen Miles tells us about the challenges of publishing in what seems like a very high-brow niche, commissioning and editing writers like Yuval Harari and Francis Fukuyama - and how interests outside of publishing feed back into her work. In the news roundup Peter and Chris discuss whether taking fossil fuel ad money makes publications complicit in greenwashing, the BBC's audience figures ahead of its centenary, and whether US media companies should be enviously looking at UK publications.

In this week's Scheer Intelligence podcast, host Robert Scheer discusses the paradoxical past, present and future of China's "socialist market" economic model with Nathan Gardels, author of "It Is No Longer Glorious to Get Rich in China," published this week by Noema, a magazine of the Berggruen Institute.
On September 16, 2019, 5-year-old Dulce Maria Alavez was playing in a park with her 3-year-old brother. It was a gorgeous day in Bridgeton, New Jersey, and the two children were enjoying ice cream. But in under 15 minutes, the idyllic day would turn into a parent's worst nightmare, when Manuel came running back to the car without his older sister. A search for Dulce Maria was immediately launched, and so was the criticism against her young mother, Noema. Elvia Wilk talks to artist Stephanie Dinkins about her ongoing projects involving AI, and recent text, “Afro-now-ism,” published in Noema magazine. Stephanie Dinkins is a transmedia artist and professor at Stony Brook University where she holds the Kusama Endowed Chair in Art. She creates platforms for dialog about artificial intelligence (AI) as it intersects race, gender, aging, and our future histories. She is particularly driven to work with communities of color to co-create more equitable, values grounded artificial intelligent ecosystems. Dinkins’ art practice employs lens-based practices, emerging technologies, and community engagement to confront questions of bias in AI, data sovereignty and social equity. Investigations into the contradictory histories, traditions, knowledge bases, and philosophies that form/in-form society at large underpin her thought and art production.

Episode 14 Dulce Maria AlavezFive year old Dulce Maria Alavez vanished from a playground in Bridgeton, NJ in September, 2019, a year ago this month. It is believed that she is the victim of an abduction. A description and sketch of a suspect were generated, but as of yet, the case remains unsolved. Dulce's mother, Noema has been the focus of attention from people who claim that she has not appeared to be showing enough emotion through out this ordeal. The case has also been plagued by mysterious letters being mailed hinting that the writer or writers may have information about the case. Noema joins us to discuss her daughter's case, and to respond to accusations against her. Welcome, welcome. As with the last edition, you can now listen to this newsletter (and find it in Apple Podcasts, if you’d rather subscribe that way). First, to kick things off, some self-promotion. My regular radio show Hot Sauce Radio can now be found on Souncloud which, tbh, is probably better than hosting on Mixcloud, where I was before. More people use it. Better on mobile, even if you don’t have the app. Anyways, the most recent show is a freestyle mix featuring Joni Mitchell, J Dilla, Arthur Russell, Bowie, Helado Negro, Steve Lacy, and a bunch more. I had a lot of fun putting it together. So go forth and listen to Hot Sauce Radio Episode #4. Now onto the goods! Prompt Twitter is, as defined by Brian Feldman, a Twitter trend that began in 2019 which are “slightly elaborate phrasings of mundane questions.” One of the worst prompts I’ve seen recently is “reply w a baby pic that exudes the energy you have now” and it’s just people posting baby pics. Yeah, I would hope that someone posting a younger version of their own face might have some aesthetic consistency. It’s the same face! Yeesh.Prompt Twitter is a perpetual motion machine of everyone asking everyone else to smell each others' farts. The obvious allure of it is that all parties gets what they want out of it. The prompter gets to seem authentic and interested in their audience (they are not) and the promptee gets permission to make the conversation all about themselves – “I wasn’t going to say it but someone asked!” Twitter famously prompts users with a generic “What’s happening?” but its users pick up the slack by creating specific activities for each other. Prompt Twitter is tailor-made for #brands to jump in and feel very of-the-moment, patting themselves on the back for being of the cultural zeitgeist or knowing what’s, like, trending. Brian has a good write-up of how thinking about Prompt Twitter can give you a good understanding of TikTok, and a certain segment of content that’s just “Prompt Twitter on steroids,” versus the actual compelling content, which is when users subvert the trending sounds and formats to end up somewhere new. That’s some of what makes TikTok so good! (Related: I’ve ben featured—OK, quoted—in PR Week on how I’ve counseled brands on their TikTok strategy and dealt with how to measure it campaigns.) So, there is a lot of fun to be had on TikTok. But there is a lot about TikTok that’s not good. I’m not even going to broach the national security, Trump vs. TikTok issues here. TikTok has a unique ~culture~ and platform nuance that set it apart from your Instagrams of the world. That culture (and so much of internet culture, memes, and the like) often has a nasty bent to it, mirroring society and exacerbating the problems underneath. From WIRED’s September cover story written by Jason Parham, TikTok and the Evolution of Digital Blackface (yeah, like the cover of a paper magazine, y’all):Over a period of two months, I heard from 29 Black creators who shared stories about muted posts, in-app harassment, and incidents of racism. They said the problems on the app are deeper and more widespread than simple isolated incidents. “Ever since I joined I've felt like the app is against me,” one told me. Another added, “It's disgusting how much they have allowed to go unchecked.” Together, their experiences belie the perception of TikTok as an app of joy and creativity, revealing instead a place tangled up in an ancient pain—a site of blurred visions and youthful ignorances, where flattery quickly turns into mockery, mockery into theft, and theft into something altogether more disturbing. The quickest route to TikTok stardom (for white creators/influencers)? Digital blackface. Copy Black culture, Black cultural expression, Black chart-toppers, Black language. This is not unique to TikTok but might be more pronounced than on other platforms, and it can be so personal, given that sounds of an individual Black person—their voice, their music—underpins viral content for white people. But digital blackface proliferates in ways beyond “platforms.” Reaction GIFs are one of the common uses of digital blackface, for example. So: TikTok as a cultural force and a platform of #GoodContent in the year of our lord 2020? Yeah, not necessarily. Well, I mean, look. It’s not just TikTok. Writing in Noema, UCLA associate professor Safiya Noble lays bare how big tech has failed to improve humanity, brought further into light by COVID-19. In short, instead of being partners in building the public good, Big Tech continues to profit from its erosion. Rather than contribute to the public coffers so that we can fund the public institutions we so desperately need to support, the titans of Big Tech are trying to come to the rescue through philanthropy and expressions of personal goodwill, making private donations at a tiny fraction of their personal wealth into the charitable and non-governmental organizations of their choosing. But these kinds of private drops into the desperately under-funded public pool, in exchange for eschewing the kind of tax responsibilities that working-people face, further erodes coordination and fair distributions of power and resources.OK, in other news, the NBA appears to have figured out how to do sports during a pandemic, but it seems like a pretty non-replicable solution for other leagues or sports to do. One thing for certain: Greg, lifelong Dallas Mavs fan, is pretty excited to see Luka and KP suit up and SHOCK THE WORLD in the playoffs. (Look: Pistons first-and-foremost for life, but I have to have one new sports team that I’m a Dallas resident and it sure isn’t going to be some of the other teams down here.)Thanks for reading and/or listening and I’ll be back soon, I promise. Love you all. Greg Get full access to Greg's Newsletter at greg.substack.com/subscribe

O primeiro que me encontrar, vai matar-me”. 15.E o Senhor respondeu-lhe: “Não! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cassiordl/message
On the first episode of 2020, Savannah explores the tragic disappearance of 4-year-old Dulce Alvarez. What started as a normal day at the park, ended in heartbreak when Dulce's mother, Noema Alavez Perez, let Dulce and her little brother play in the park by themselves, but only Dulce's brother returned. Savannah also discusses the controversy of Noema's decisions and her actions afterwards. Is it possible that Noema is somehow involved in the disappearance or are people just adding to her tragedy? Right out of the gate you will recognize some throwback vibe with a Section 25 - "Looking" sound. The warm familiarity just goes from there. Dante's Episode 061 moves adeptly and in waves as any Aazhite has come to love and appreciate. By the time you reach Noema, you are submersed in a plush, Smiths-esqe vibe yet modern and dancey. As with all good wave machines the mix ends with energy and style. Headphone listeners beware, this selector has sounds from all sides. Enjoy! Paul Roquet’s wonderful new book begins with an offering of jellyfish and proceeds to teach us how to read the air. Ambient Media: Japanese Atmospheres of Self (University of Minnesota Press, 2016) looks carefully at the phenomenon of ambient subjectivication or, the emergence of self with and through ambient media in modern Japan. Beginning in the 1970s, atmosphere was becoming ambient, according to Roquet, and the emergence and proliferation of new techniques of ambient subjectivication reflected a shift in how the person was understood, away from collective self-understanding and toward a model rooted in a liberal ideal of autonomy and self-determination. Each chapter of the book looks at some specific way that music, film, video, and literature from the 1970s onward have incorporated forms of ambient subjectivication, from the Erik Satie boom and the birth of environmental music of the late 1970s to the music of artists like Hatakeyama Chihei (whose 2006 Minima Moralia I highly recommend!), to films like Ichikawa Jun’s Tony Takitani, and much much more. The book is also a gateway into a world of arresting and inspiring electronic media, and I recommend reading with an internet connection at hand to explore experiences like Ryoichi Kurokawa’s rheo: 5 horizons, Tsuchiya Takafumis’ Apoptosis, and Ise Shoko’s Noema while you work through Roquet’s text. I come from a place beyond the border I live in the space between the lines I am the black gold of the sun These are the words of Noema, the sound shaman, producer and DJ who has long graced us with organic, sexy journeys and trippy-shizzle-galore frenzies of psychedelic rhythm. In this podcast, we are gently taken by the hand and guided from darkness into light. Slowly oscillating back and forth and left and right in subtle cumbia drives, he takes us to a place beyond the border in the next Urban Cosmonaut Radio podcast #021 Originally from Wiesbaden in Germany, Noema is currently based in Berlin and has found a second home in Brazil, where he feels a deep connection to the music that has influenced his vibe immensely. Among the artists that have shaped his sense of musical aesthetic are Esbjörn Svensson, Matthew Herbert, Marvin Gaye, John Gage, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Voodoohop, the traces of whom can be found in Noema's eclectic selections. Noema is the founder of the Magic Movement, a platform that supports and pushes extraordinary artists of psychedelic, organic and transcultural music that aren't yet known in Europe. With his deep appreciation for high quality music from around the world and colourful collection of truly unique tracks, we are happy to let him guide us from darkness…. …..into the light.
