ORIGINAL AIR DATE: MARCH 15, 2019Brothers of the Serpent Episode 089:We spend some time on listener comments and correspondence, reading them and responding in kind. Kyle then reads some fascinating news stories about ancient CMEs, and advanced mathematics describing why hipsters are the first to be annoying, anywhere. After that, we read excerpts from Graham Hancock's book Underworld about the mysterious Jomon people of ancient Japan, whose culture survived for at least 12,000 years. Jomon pottery is by far the oldest pottery ever discovered, by many thousands of years, and they had some oldest known organized planned settlements in the world.

Episode IntroLast week I shared stories of my recent trip to Japan. There's one story, though, that's taken on a life of its own since being stateside once again. It all began with a visit to Tokyo National Museum in Uedo Park, seeing objects that have become icons in the UFO/UAP communities. If that wasn't enough, those odd clay figures led me to seek out some of the burial pyramids where they were found. And because I can't let sleeping dogs lie, I dug into the theories about the dogu figures, which I can't wait to share with you. So enough build up, let's get into it!High Strangeness at Tokyo National MuseumIf you listen to Curious Cat in order, first, thank you so much. But, second, I'm sorry you've heard this part of the story before, apologies. Next, we entered a building of archeological finds. Many came from the Kofun period, the 3rd to 6th century, and were buried beneath family dwellings or in burial tombs. The energy was reverent, whispering, hallowed, still, as objects made for the dead sat exposed for the living, the light was soft, but was never meant to touch these. I was keenly aware and took few photos, even though they were allowed. It felt wrong. This area held the dogu. They are unusual sculptures in a variety of forms. Many, most actually, were broken in half intentionally, and buried beneath the floors of family dwellings. And then I saw the figure I'd seen countless times as I watched Ancient Aliens. A goggle-eyed figure, one leg broken clean off, supported by a block of stone. It did look alien, like a person in a space suit. I looked at the backside, the side they never showed in all those episodes. I took photos and my ghost app came on, words lighting up my phone screen, "Dust, Within, Low." That was it.These figures are strange, and I found two more examples of the goggled-eyed ones that I'd never seen before and shot photos. Many have speculated on dogu, saying they are fertility symbols, akin to Venus of Willendorf, or ritualistic. These figures are OLD. And much of the information about them on the internet is stale, clearly repeated from other sources, but there are very few fresh takes. It's frustrating. Some of the information though is verified. Take this from Google, "dogū, abstract clay figurines, generally of pregnant females, made in Japan during the Jōmon period (c. 10,500 to c. 300 bce). Dogū are reminiscent of the rigidly frontal fertility figures produced by other prehistoric cultures."Sources and MaterialsDogu figures: https://www.wasshoimagazine.org/blog/discovering-japan/doguAnother great article about the strange mystery of dogu figurines. https://artscape.jp/artscape/eng/ht/1212.htmlhttps://artrkl.com/blogs/news/the-mystery-of-japans-dog-figuresBest images of dogu with lots of links for further readingAncient Origins of Dogu article to check out! In September, Usagi Yojimbo returns to Dark Horse Comics with the new mini-series Ice and Snow. However, that's just the warm-up. Stan Sakai and Julie Sakai have massive plans for their Dogu Publishing imprint, and we're eager to break it all down with them. Their creative partnership began on a short strip featured in Peanuts: A Tribute to Charles M. Schulz. We go back to their beginning and trace a path to where they are today, creatively and as a romantic couple. How did they know they would work well together? How do they navigate two unique perspectives to produce a singular work? Dogu Publishing is a family affair, and that larger collaboration kicked off with Chibi Usagi's publication. Previously, we've dismissed this offshoot as cute and clever. However, upon re-examination this week, we discovered it's an essential entry in the Usagi Yojimbo story. And, yeah, it's brilliantly connected to the Usagi-Verse, which includes Space Usagi and a few other splinters you may still need to be aware of. This episode is part of our more extensive San Diego Comic-Con coverage, and since we're releasing on Sunday, we can reveal some new Usagi Yojimbo stories here. You should know, though, that at the 41:18 minute mark, we spoil a critical element from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo: Wherewhen #4. We've dropped a warning within the audio, don't worry. Usagi Yojimbo: Ice and Now #1 hits shelves on September 9th. We did get a preview of that issue, expect a review on the site very soon. Make sure you have it in your pull box at your local comic book store. If you don't have a local comic book store, you can find the nearest one HERE. Follow Stan Sakai on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Follow Dogu Publishing on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Most importantly, visit www.stansakai.com and get yourself some comics. Listen to our previous Stan Sakai episode, discussing all things Samurai Rabbit. As mentioned above, this episode is part of our San Diego Comic-Con International celebration. Listen to our Day One episode with Paul Cornell HERE. Listen to our Day Two episode with Adrian Tomine HERE. Listen to our Dary Three episode with Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips HERE. Next week, we'll return with some in-person interviews, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Karl Stevens, Todd McFarlane, Robert Kirkman, and more. You better get subscribed to Comic Book Couples Counseling. And, if you haven't already, now's the time to join our Patreon, where superstar cartoonist Daniel Warren Johnson just recorded an epic chat with us about his favorite single-issue comic, The 'Nam #9. In this episode, I speak with Dogu Taskiran about digital twins and how they make a building and a city truly smart. Dogu is a software developer, a smart city thought leader and the CEO of a virtual reality and augmented reality studio, Stambol Studios. However, Stambol doesn't just focus on what people might traditionally associate VR and AR with; they also work within the real estate and construction industry, creating virtual models that allow key stakeholders to view the building before it's even built. The key questions answered are: What is the value of a Digital Twin? How does a Digital Twin link into Construction 4.0? What are the benefits for Facility Managers and the wider supply chain? Is there any resistance to fully digitised cities? What is your vision of the future city? #amBXSmartBuildingPod #SmartBuildings #SmartCity #DigitalTwins #SmartTechnology #IoT #AI #ML #Construction4.0 #AugmentedAnalytics

Is there a connection between all the ancient extraterrestrials that have supposedly descended from the dog star: Sirius? How did the Dogon tribe know about the invisible sister star, Sirius B, without a technologically advanced telescope in their possession? Are the Sky Stones that fell to earth with the African sky gods, the Nomoli, actually the remenants of an alien planet? Are the Dogu statues from ancient Japan actually depicting ancient aliens in spacesuits...from 18 thousand years ago? Are there linguistic connections between the Dogon, Dragons, Dagon, Dagda, and other gods that are on the verge of sounding like…”daddy?” We don’t know, but our plucky Ancient Astronaut Theorists sure think they do! Let’s prooooooooooooooobe into Season 14, Episode 4 of Ancient Aliens: The Star Gods of Sirius!

Matt Storniolo JoinsOn this special LIVE episode from the RUDIS Booth at Fargo, North Dakota Junior Nationals Ben Askren, Northwestern Head Coach Matt Storniolo, and Matt Dernlan talk collegiate wrestling and Yasar Dogu results. They kick-off by asking Storniolo about how Freestyle training is going at Northwestern. Northwestern currently has Yahya Thomas and Lucas Davison representing them on the world stage both of whom made the Junior World Team. They also discuss Sebastian Rivera’s future in freestyle wrestling and the possibility of him wrestling for Puerto Rico on the world stage. Northwestern also just had Ryan Deakin make it all the way to Final X. Askren talks about how impressive it was and what can Storniolo equate to how Deakin came off a 6th place NCAA finish to being extremely close to representing the US at Worlds. Storniolo talks about the grind of a season Deakin went through with every week taking on a top 10 opponent. He also talks about the balancing act that is the college wrestling season and the plans for 2020.Yasar Dogu (12:15)After Storniolo gets back to coaching, Askren and Dernlan talk about Fargo Junior Nationals, the history, and energy surrounding it and how important it is for wrestling. They then get into the 2019 Yasar Dogu wrestling tournament. The U.S. had an incredible showing and came out with great results. They first talk about how much we learned about seeing Yianni Diakomihalis compete in his first senior-level national tournament. They also breakdown Frank Chamizo defaulting out of the finals against Jordan Burroughs.Zain vs Yianni (25:14)The topic goes to Zain Retherford and Diakomihalis’ ongoing arbitration over the Final X official call. After Diakomihalis beat Retherford at Yasar Dogu, it opened the conversation back up from the public that these two need to wrestle match 2 from Final X again.Dake vs Dieringer (30:25)Askren asks how Alex Dieringer’s results impact Dernlan’s view on Dieringer vs Kyle Dake. Dernlan says it’s hard to say until you see it and either of the two will most likely be gold medalist. Askren predicted that Dieringer could and would beat Dake in a close match at Final X and Dieringer’s performance internationally solidifies his prediction.J’Den Cox Calls his Shot (33:40)Dernlan talks about how J’Den Cox called his shot like Babe Ruth was known for by saying he was going to show the world there is no hope for anyone else at worlds. Cox didn’t get scored on once at Yasar Dogu and beats the world 42-0.Kyle Snyder Wins Gold (40:13)Dernlan talks about Snyder’s concentration on his preparation for Worlds. It’s exciting to watch Snyder’s gut wrench and par terre wrestling jumping levels since last year.

We continue our journey with Dogu Civicik, a selfdescribed “guy with a funny last name and an unquenchable thirst for music”. Our next Urban Cosmonaut is somewhat disillusioned with adult life: he strives to recreate sentiments from the past, when everything seemed clear and simple, and when the music persisted long after its time. While his style fluctuates in tune with his current mood, the music itself is meant to be anything but temporary. It's meant to last long after the ebb and flow of genres and styles has died down. “My roots lie in Anatolia so does my soul, and so does my music.” His work is infused with the sounds of his heritage that helped Dogu Civicik grow into who he is: an artist who has never known the limitations of genres, growing up listening to 70's jazz and funk and being exposed to traditional Turkish music from his grandfather. This mixtape is a mélange of Dogu's own edits and productions, inspired by feelings of misanthropy when he's confronted by the current state of society. If you listen closely, you can hear the tension and the melancholy and if you listen even closer, you can feel the mood that shaped this special podcast in our series. To quote Dogu Civicik: the wound is the place where light enters you. Enjoy! Happy New Year, Urban Cosmonauts! Find Dogu on: https://soundcloud.com/dogucivicik
