The mind under stress sees things that aren't there, imagines conversations, and befriends strange creatures. Or, it sees peculiar things, has conversations with strange bedfellows, and befriends dangerous creatures and we just attribute it to mental illness because our own brains are too uncomfortable with the possibility such things could be real. War was written in Russian by Jonathan Vidgop and translated into English by Leo Shtutin.Jonathan Vidgop is a theatre director, author, screenwriter, and founder of the Am haZikaron Institute for Science and Heritage of the Jewish People in Tel-Aviv, Israel. Since July 2022, Russia's Belgorod submarine has been operating out of the White Sea base - until now!  NATO recently reported that Russia's Belgorod submarine is no longer located at the Arctic harbor. The submarine is armed with the "Poseidon" nuclear weapons system, aka a nuclear bomb-dropping drone, that is capable of creating a "radioactive tsunami."  Is NATO just using a scare tactic to blame Russia when something goes nuclear?   Support Our Sponsors (PROMO CODE: PARDON) ► Aura ► Fum   Support Our Show ► Buy Merch ► Patreon   Watch & Follow Our Show ► Rokfin ► YouTube ► Rumble ► Instagram ► Telegram

Saint of the Day
Our Venerable Father Sabbatius, Founder of the Monastery of Solovki (1435)

Saint of the Day

He lived for many years as a monk at the Monastery of St Cyril of White Lake, where his ascetic struggles won him the respect of his brethren. To flee from the admiration of men he moved further north to Valaam Monastery. But he still attracted the good opinion of his community, so he secretly headed still further north, planning to reach the uninhabited Solovki Island in the White Sea (a large bay of the Arctic Ocean). When he reached the coast, everyone who might take him tried to dissuade him from living in such a harsh place. He answered 'My children, I have a Master who has the power to renew the strength of the old and to enfeeble the young if He so wills. He makes the poor rich, clothes the naked, provides for the destitute and satisfies the starving with a measure of food as he fed five thousand men in the desert.'   While waiting for seasonable sailing weather he met St Germanus (July 30) who lived nearby as a hermit. Together they found a fishing boat and, casting all their trust on the Lord, made the dangerous two-day voyage and set up a hermitage on the island. It became known as a holy place, and thenceforth those living in the world knew not to settle on Solovki, or even to set foot there without good reason. After six years, St Germanus departed, and Sabbatius was left alone.   When he was old, he began to fear that he would die without receiving the life-giving Mysteries, of which he had not partaken since he left Valaam. So he returned to the mainland where he met an abbot Nathanael just as he was taking Holy Communion to a sick man. Sabbatius persuaded the abbot to hear his confession and grant him the priceless gift of Holy Communion. He then settled in a nearby chapel and made ready for his departure from this life. A wealthy merchant from Novgorod visited him to ask for his blessing. The Saint said to him, 'Spend the night here and you will see the grace of God.' The next morning the merchant came to Sabbatius' cell and found that he had reposed during the night; his cell was suffused with a beautiful scent.   The following year, St Germanus, along with St Zosimas (April 17), returned to Solovki island and founded a monastery there, which proved to be the nurturing ground of many Saints.

In this episode, we look at the the follow up to Dead Weather's first album, sophomore drop Sea of Cowards. This album is more or less of the same ilk to the former album, showing iterations of what works and even what doesn't about the group. Nonetheless, this band was known for incredible live shows and electric energy. The next album we look at is the solo debut of Jack White. Just before 2011's Blunderbuss was released, the White Stripes announced they would not be coming back. This meant that Jack White was no longer tied to band with self-imposed limitations -- he was the conductor, and fully able to expand his ideas. It would become clear that there is a difference between a song written as Jack White for the White Stripes, and the songs Jack would write in the studio with studio musicians. Jack would be criticized for leaving his Little Room, but this moment was earned time and time again, and the album has some of Jack's best moments.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. Coming out as a blues rock, punk aesthetic garage rock band with child-like drummer Meg White, The White Stripes paved the way for a lot of acts to come. As their success grew, Jack White branched out into other projects, including the classic rock inspired "super group" The Raconteurs, and Led Zeppelin-spirit revival, hard as nails "super group," The Dead Weather. As Jack gained momentum elsewhere, The White Stripes came to an end, leaving room for Jack White to explore a solo career. Throughout his solo career, he started honing his comfort material -- country, blues, and fuzz rock -- moving toward new grounds with experimental noise, high tech production, and unexpected plot twists.Tyler, being a conseur of pop and knower of all things music, and Greg, a Jack White super fan, have a lot to say on Jack White, including a plethora of insights and context into the creation of this music, the cultural impact of Jack White and his embedded philosophies, and the growth of self and artist.

As part of Carnival Cruise Line's year-long 50th birthday celebrations, Carnival Miracle departed the Port of Long Beach yesterday, marking the first of 17 Sailabrations cruises. The commemorative birthday sailings run through March 10, 2022 and feature at-sea ship meetups, special entertainment and programming. Carnival Miracle welcomed approximately 2,000 guests during embarkation to a birthday party complete with music and décor. Once on board, the fun continued with a 50th Birthday Bash Sailaway Party.Carnival Miracle's 14-day Sailabrations cruise stops in Honolulu, Maui, Kona, Hilo, and Ensenada. On March 5, Carnival Miracle will meet up with Carnival Radiance in Baja, Mexico, outside of Ensenada, to host one of history's biggest birthday parties at sea.Fun Facts from Carnival's 50 Years:Carnival has been a presence on the West Coast of USA for about 40 years, operating week-long cruises from Southern California in the 1980s and introducing short cruises in the mid-1990s.Carnival Corporation acquired the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, including a portion of the geodesic dome – once home to Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose – in 2003. In 2018, Carnival Corporation purchased the remaining portion of the dome and dramatically expanded the facility with significant upgrades. The expansion more than doubled the size of the terminal to 146,000 square feetCarnival's first glimpse at Carnival CelebrationIn conjunction with the kickoff of the company's 50th birthday festivities, Carnival Cruise Line is giving guests a first look at Carnival Celebration, sister ship to the incredibly popular Mardi Gras, that will debut in Miami this November, revealing details on four of its six zones including Celebration Central. On a Carnival cruise, guests' vacations start in the atrium, and on Carnival Celebration, that is in Celebration Central. Spanning Decks 6, 7 and 8, Celebration Central is an update to the fabulous starboard side atrium that debuted on Mardi Gras, designed as the heart of the ship's celebratory spirit with a whole new look and the feeling of a festive party woven throughout.Celebration Central will also feature the awe-inspiring, three-deck-high atrium that guests are quickly getting to know and love, but with a ceiling that appears as a burst of a confetti canon made of approximately 1,400 color-changing lighting fixtures that will transform from day to night. Functional as it is eye-catching, the space will include 3,000-square-foot floor-to-ceiling windows on the side of the ship that will change into 16 individually controlled, six- by 14-foot LED screens to work hand in hand with the ever-changing entertainment options, including live music, special effects, aerial acrobatic performances, and high-energy shows.Introducing nods to Carnival's Fun Ship history, guests will spot pieces from former Carnival ships that will be repurposed to blend with the ship's modern decor throughout Celebration Central and beyond. For example, in the Aquaria Bar, ocean-themed glass murals from Carnival Victory by Italian artist Luciano Vistosi will be incorporated into a striking two-deck-high decorative wall behind the bar to create an aquarium-like effect, inspiring the name. And the Tropicale Bar is named after Carnival's first ship to sport the line's iconic funnel.Celebration Central will also include food and beverage options, such as JavaBlue Café, Bonsai Sushi and Bonsai Teppanyaki, and feel-good entertainment such as Piano Bar 88 and The Punchliner Comedy Club. The Ultimate PlaygroundAfter such an incredible response from guests on Mardi Gras, the centerpiece of Carnival Celebration's Ultimate Playground (Decks 18-20 Aft) will be BOLT, The Ultimate Sea Coaster, soon to be the second roller coaster at sea, recognized by Popular Science with a “Best of What's New” award. Guests can expect the thrills they've raved about as all-electric, motorcycle-inspired vehicles race along an 800-foot-long track 187 feet above the sea achieving speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.Reaching a very exciting milestone, Mauer Rides, the manufacturer of the groundbreaking top-deck attraction, has fully assembled BOLT on land and is currently conducting initial shoreside unmanned test runs in Munich, Germany. BOLT will soon be reassembled and installed aboard Carnival Celebration. Designed for fun for all-ages, the zone will also be home to the WaterWorks aqua park and SportSquare featuring a mini-golf course, full-court basketball and an exhilarating ropes course.Summer Landing and LidoCarnival Celebration's Summer Landing zone (Deck 8 Aft) will continue to serve as the greatest chill spot at sea with Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, offering smoked-on-board favorites created by Guy Fieri and an assortment of Carnival's ParchedPig craft beers brewed on site, in addition to pools and whirlpools, The Watering Hole poolside bar, and the Heroes Tribute Lounge honoring military personnel. And the poolside zone, Lido (Decks 16-17 Aft), will feature all of the delicious and fun experiences from Mardi Gras including the two-level RedFrog Tiki Bar designed to transport guests to a South Pacific paradise, Shaquille O'Neal's Big Chicken restaurant, guest-favorite Guy's Burger Joint, Seafood Shack, and BlueIguana Cantina, with offerings perfect for any tastebud, any time.Cunard announces Matt Moran to headline inaugural Great Australian Culinary VoyageAcclaimed Australian chef and restaurateur Matt Moran to spoil food afficionados on board luxurious Queen ElizabethCunard has announced legendary chef, restaurateur, TV host and author, Matt Moran will headline the talent program for its extraordinary five-day Great Australian Culinary Voyage departing Sydney on 28 January 2023.While on board, the Australian icon will create exclusive dishes for onboard diners and share his passion for Australian food and produce with Cunard guests through talks and interviews.Cunard's inaugural Great Australian Culinary Voyage will celebrate all aspects of Australia's unique food and wine offering on a five-day cruise from Sydney on 28 January 2023. While the RRS Sir David Attenborough is focused on science and the logistical support of British research stations, Le Commandant Charcot was purpose-built to take guests on voyages to high latitudes, whilst conducting scientific research along the way. When it was realised both ships would coincidentally meet in Carroll Inlet at 73°15 south, it offered the perfect opportunity to combine the capabilities of both ships to work in tandem.Le Commandant Charcot features a unique PC2 hull design, with the ability to sail in ‘double-acting mode', specifically enabling the ship to tackle thicker and more dense ice; she does this more quickly and efficiently by sailing backwards.Le Commandant Charcot opened a channel by sailing astern, with the RRS Sir David Attenborough following behind, working to widen the channel. This collaboration enabled a 3NM channel to be opened in just 3 hours. Despite creating a channel and getting close to the depot site, once Le Commandant Charcot had departed for her next destination, the sea ice conditions were against the ship, and the RRS Sir David Attenborough turned around. It is now seeking an alternative location nearby to depot cargo for Thwaites Glacier. There is a long-standing belief amongst polar professionals in collaboration and support where possible; and that we can achieve more by working together.Le Commandant Charcot is an LNG-electric hybrid vessel. She's the world's first PC2 Polar Class ship, making her the safest and most capable polar exploration passenger ship in the world, as well as one of the most luxurious. Le Commandant Charcot offers voyages to explore deep into the Antarctic and all the way to the North Pole, and simultaneously invites scientists from around the world to make use of her onboard laboratories to conduct research to further our understanding of these remote regions.Fred. Beluga Whales are white cetaceans adapted to life in the Arctic. Belugas are highly sociable and communicate in high-pitched squeaks, squeals, clicks, and whistles. This is why they're also known as the  "sea canary" of the ocean. Their forehead contains an organ (called a melon) that they use for echolocation, finding breathing holes in the ice, and to hunt in dark or turbid waters. Young male belugas may mimic human speech, but they grow out of it. In The Good, The Bad, The NewsPhysics Professor mailed an anonymous cardboard box filled with cash. Child solicitor Jeffrey Epstein didn't quite make it to trial, surprising probably no one more than Jeffrey Epstein... in fact, Russian Bots and the President seem to have had it figured out before Jeff's body hit the floor. William Barr has reached Susan Collins levels of concern over the irregularities. Prosecutors vow to continue their investigation into the inner workings of Epstein's criminal organization, once they finish their investigation into the inner workings of Epstein. Gun culture and wellness culture offer their followers “empowering epistemology”. The El Paso killer quoted the gospel chapter and verse. Donald Trump is a racist. Cruelty remains the point, although corporations have leveraged extra benefits. Why haven't Trump companies been raided, other than the very, very obvious reasons? What is the opposite of diplomacy? Domination? Sanity? Donald hears the pitter patter of little feet, exiting the White House. Even the best evil megalomaniacs have setbacks attempting world domination, as Russia's hypersonic cruise missile prototype makes just a little tiny little Chernobyl over the White Sea.

Deliverance author James Dickey's final novel, an intense and primal WWII story about a crashed Air Force gunner trying to make his way through the Tokyo firebombing north to Alaska, was published in 1993 and promptly given to top shelf screenplay attempts at this nearly dialogue-free story. The first was in 1996 by David and Janet Peoples, fresh off the critical and commercial hit 12 Monkeys, with David himself having solo won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar (Unforgiven) the year of the novel's publication. The second was in a soon-to-be legendary adaptation from 1998 by the Coen Brothers, set to star Brad Pitt, follow up The Big Lebowski, and be their (then) most expensive film. On this episode, I'm joined again by writer/director Tyler Savage, as we discuss:- the legendary status of the Coen Brothers' version for its dialogue-free silence;- how the Peoples' version accomplishes the same non-verbal silent cinema;- the Peoples' uses of the intrinsically cinematic storytelling technique of the reversal;- if either team felt trapped by their past of writing overt violence;- how many of the elements of this elemental, task-oriented novel ended up in the Coens' other literary adaptation, Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men.- and if this movie will ever be made.Also:- the difference between how an accomplished screenwriter (team) who won't direct writes versus- how a writer/director team who might eventually direct writes;- how to write visuals for a visual medium where the blueprints are in textblocks;- if the screenplay format is really designed for making a good film or simply pleasing agents and gatekeepers;- and my problems with the format (spoiler: the “play” part of the word screenplay).Tyler Savage's second directed-feature, Stalker, which he also co-wrote, will be released by Vertical Entertainment in the United Kingdom on May 21 and in the United States on June 18. He also wrote and directed Inheritance, along with associate producer credits on Song to Song, Knight of Cups, and Voyage of Time. Both screenplay drafts are available to find with some judicious Googling. An adaptation of the book is still in development from Vertigo Entertainment. Dickey's original novel is itself still in print and available everywhere.

In Sweden, a student group called «Brown Island» feels the presence of a majority of middle class, white students is «problematic». Its members are also traumatized by the name of the exhibition space at The Art Academy. As it turns out, the white walls of «The White Sea» are soaked in racism (a lot of white people have been in the room throughout the years). A «sin of the skin» easily proven by swapping empiricism, reason and rational arguments for emotional and subjective interpretations. In Denmark, a group lead by a professor threw a cast of a former king in the harbour, protesting past slave trade. Though fired from her job, the professor is supported by art world representatives. To understand this phenomenon, Jan-Ove Tuv turns to Catherine Nixey´s book «The Darkening Age. The Christian Destruction of The Classical World». What began as «political activism» gradually turned into state politics, and the destruction of culture. If we do not push back, we are indeed (re)entering a darkening age. Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, has been dubbed the Trump of the Tropics. Despite widespread criticism of his handling of the pandemic, he has been gaining support from an unexpected place recently – in the country's northeast, known as a left-wing stronghold. But a new welfare benefit is changing the political landscape there, as Katy Watson found. Russia passed the two-million mark of Covid-19 cases this week. One of the worst affected areas is the Archangelsk region in the north, on the White Sea of the Arctic Ocean. It's been hit so hard, that overstretched healthcare workers are defying their bosses and speaking out, as Sarah Rainsford reports. It's Black Friday next week, when retailers try to entice their customers with big discounts. Author James May comes on the show to talk about his latest book "The Body Outside The Kremlin." A suspenseful new murder mystery set in a crumbling monastery–turned–Soviet prison in the early twentieth century. In a former monastery on an island in the White Sea, now taken over by the Bolsheviks, young mathematician Tolya Bogomolov is serving a three-year sentence, watched over by a skeleton crew of secret policemen. Some prisoners are consigned to forced labor while others sit at comfortable desks. So Tolya has been cultivating an acquaintance with Gennady Antonov that he hopes will lead to a better work assignment—maybe even a little more bread in his ration—especially now, with the brutal winter fast approaching. Gennady holds a privileged position restoring the monks' seized collection of icons. But when his body is discovered floating frozen in the bay, Tolya's connection with him is no longer advantageous—it's downright dangerous. At first, the authorities question Tolya. But he's mystified when they assign him to assist the elderly detective investigating the case. While he'd rather find the real killer than have the murder pinned on him, digging into Gennady's secrets will turn up mysteries that could turn Tolya into the next victim . . .

The DJ Sessions - Featuring the best local, national, and world-renowned DJ's playing live sets. Ganin on The DJ Sessions presents the "Mobile Sessions" in Seattle 9/11/19 About Ganin - Ganin or Konstantin Ganin, in short Kostya Ganin, is one dedicated to electronic music fella crazed about a good groove and a good taste passionately defending techno and house music as well as other forms of electronica from the moment he has realized that dance music and DJing are very positives forces to connect with the world and unite with others through the sounds. An incredible dance of energies and passions that come from the creative and artistic elements of dance music have inspired Konstantin since his roots in northeastern Europe, the northwest of Russia, in Archangel, a northern city nearby the White Sea of rich cultural heritage and tradition. In 1998, an opportunity was presented by the family's friends to travel to the United States to learn English language and experience American culture and society. When arrived in the midwest, Konstantin have not settled on anything other than getting his first set of DJ equipment and began learning the basics of the artform, cutting his teeth at any events he could possibly manage to get booked to play at, but always with a focus on the music he enjoyed, keeping it real for the sound that inspired him. There he met some of his DJ mentors that presented some of the first opportunities to play in front of the crowd at club nights and learn how to work the audience with the power of good groove and sound. That experience provided him a solid foundation to practice the right skills and learn the sophisticated sense of music's relationship with the audience through the essence of the grooves and mixes. In 2002, a move to the northwest in the Seattle area offered more opportunities to collaborate and work internationally in the dance music scene. While juggling many jobs in a struggle to make a stable living and studying new skills, Konstantin managed to consistently play various public and private events around the Seattle area. Appearing as a guest on KBCS 91.3FM local/online electronic music radio shows Variations and Trans Europe Express. Performed at a wide variety of dance music events, club nights, parties and community projects. Played as a guest at such Seattle area venues as Resonance, The Underground, Kremwerk, The Baltic Room, Contour, Substation, Monkey, Republiq, Flight, Sky, Trinity, Element, Noc Noc, Mantra, The Islander cruise boat, and others. Co-hosted and hosted several nights as a guest as well as a resident such as Seabiza, Dance Delicious and House Temptations. Also consulted for and promoted the Seattle DJ Academy, an organization with a focus on education, enriching and empowering all ages of local and international communities of artistic minds. Most recently collaborated with a mastermind of Area 303 and Seabiza events on new exciting projects to create a world-class nightlife experience in Seattle. And now getting into music production to channel his ideas into inspirational grooves. With his regular support for the many local events as well as creative artists and DJs, while staying tuned to the variety of electronic music from around the world, Konstantin has remained true to the sound and established a brand for good taste and selective quality in his favorite forms of music. He madly enjoys unleashing a Rockin party experience every time, spinning that fine delicious dance music. Specific to an event and a theme, often with a dose of intrigue and surprise, beware of jacking sounds from classics to hot jams of today. Stepping on Bones - Solovki and Russia's Past

Heart and Soul

Founded in the 15th century on a remote archipelago in the White Sea, Solovetsky monastery (or “Solovki”) was once one of Russia’s most religious sites. But in the 20th century Solovki gained notoriety as the “Mother of Gulags” – the first and most brutal of the concentration camps of the Soviet time, a stark embodiment of repression. With the fall of the communism in the early 1990's, the monastery was re-established though and a small group of monks were allowed to settle. Monks and historians have worked together to keep the dual-legacy of Solovki alive, but spiritual revival on the bones of the dead has proved complicated; the Russian Orthodox Church wants to make the entire archipelago the stronghold of belief it had once been, while historians and human rights activists say that traces of Gulag are being gradually and forcibly removed. Natalia Golysheva, whose grandfather was a Gulag prisoner, explores Solovki’s legacy. She joins pilgrims on their journey to the far-off skits, hears from local residents and speaks to the granddaughter of perhaps the most famous Gulag survivor Dmitry Likhachov asking her what Solovki represents in modern day Russia. Is it a place of religious worship or a memorial to its most painful past, and will reconciliation ever be possible? Back in the Soviet era, boatloads of day-trippers went to the island of Mudyug in the White Sea, to visit a museum. It was based around the remains of a prison camp - and one that is very different from the decaying Gulag camps scattered across north Russia and Siberia. For one thing, it was set up as far back as 1918. Even more remarkably, many jailors were not Russian. They were foreign troops. Bizarrely one French officer at the camp later created the world's most famous scent, Chanel No 5, inspired by his experiences in the Russian Arctic.

I wonder why the sound of trains is so evocative.  Even for folks who have never been on a train there is something about the sound of a train on the tracks that stirs the imagination.  This mix will hopefully have the same effect.   I was surprised to find that I've only done two previous train themed mixes.  It sure seems like I've done more.  Maybe it's the use of train sounds in filed recording mixes that has me confused.  Anyway, here are the two previous mixes... http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2014/08/leaving-station.html http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2015/01/points-of-departure.html   This mix began with a recommendation from a follower on Mixcloud, Paul Asbury Seaman. I asked for any other train tunes he could suggest and he came through in a big way.  He did all the hard work and mapped out the whole mix for me.  I had a great time mixing it and discovering new music along the way.   Here's what Paul had to say about the mix...   "Berlin School synth/electronica can be pretty kinetic and thus an obvious source for a train mix, but I was going for a more melancholy sound, the wistful feeling evoked by the sound of Far Away Trains Passing By (the title of the Ulrich Schnauss album represented here). My working title for this mix was "Locomotive Lullaby."   While I was on the subject, I made a list of classic train songs (the sung kind) and came up with more than sixty--about three CDs worth! Here's a great article to start your playlist with: http://harpers.org/blog/2014/06/the-twenty-three-best-train-songs-ever-written-maybe/ Or contact Low Light Mixes for a copy of mine. Thanks, new friend Dave, for putting this together."   Thanks Paul, for all work on this excellent mix!  I still have more tracks to use so the next train mix will be more jazzy.   Cheers!   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Erik Wollo - Church Mountain(Different Spaces 2017) 04:04    Johan Agebjörn - Sleepless On The Kostomuksha-Petrozavodsk Night Train(We Never Came to the White Sea 2017) 10:20    Between Interval - On Track(Legacy 2017) 13:10    David Parsons - The Himgiri(Yatra 1990) 18:40    Ulrich Schnauss - Nothing Happens in June(Far Away Trains Passing By...2001) 24:25    Ascendant - Ephemeris(Source Transmission 2014) 31:30    Mark Ward - Universal(Universal 2017) 40:15    Hollan Holmes - Enduro(The Spirits of Starlight 2014) 46:25    Erik Wollo - Rundreise(Different Spaces 2017) 51:05    Al Gromer Khan - Stamboul Train(Turya 2006) 62:15    end

In a place called Arkhangelsk, on the shore of the White Sea, a musician watches the water flow into the Arctic Ocean. The stars are much brighter, and more twinkly there than here, lighting up the sky in northwestern Russia. Lush forests, harsh climate and a seemingly endless Milky Way are the only – and constant – source of inspiration for our next Urban Cosmonaut Radio artist Donev. His live set is a reflection of the world in which he lives in. You can hear the sound of vast lands in his intro as he looks far into space, onto water, upon trees. And you can feel his love for starry skies, and how he interprets them in his productions. Donev produced this piece of music with a message in mind: to preserve the Earth we live in, and all its beauty and diversity, and to know that this is our unique journey. We wish you a peaceful dive, Urban Cosmonauts. Find Donev on: https://soundcloud.com/do_nev
