Today’s guest is Che Dyer - who you may know as @indieyogalife or as @indieberries on social media. Che is a yoga teacher based in London in the UK who specialises in healing through creativity and working with the heart. I’ve know Che for quite a long time, from university, through to the hey days of blogging when people used to actually write and read and comment on blog posts back before Instagram became the micro blogging platform it is today. It’s been so wonderful for me to watch Che’s journey and she really is a source of light and laughter and inspiration in my life and in my newsfeed! In today’s episode we chat about her path to becoming a yoga teacher, the magic of yoga and mediation, the impact of becoming spiritually awakened on relationships with ourselves and with others, as well as the identity shifts that occur within when you start embracing this “woo-woo” lifestyle. We also chat abut the relationship between creativity and yoga and how the process of creating can bring you to a deeper place of focus and awareness. We also delve into the land of sober-curious and the interesting effect that alcohol has on our lives once we gain access to that deeper place of being. Let’s just say both Che and I have a love / hate relationship with the good old booze bottle! Without further ado, let’s get into this week’s chat. Enjoy! Today’s guest is Jessica Kolowitz aka The Green Dietitian - a dietitian who happens to be vegan! In a world where many medical professionals and dieticians can be rather scathing about following a vegan diet, Jessica is a breath of fresh air and a fountain of knowledge. Since she opened her practice in Cape Town, she has helped dozens of people to successfully transform their health and improve their quality of life. She also focuses on helping athletes, pregnant women, lactating women and children to achieve optimal health, well-being and performance while following vegan or vegetarian diets. Jessica graduated with her Masters degree in Nutrition in 2017 and aims to use her skills as a researcher to further evaluate the scientific literature and spread the message of a plant-based diet. Jessica knows her stuff and I just loved chatting to her! She studies the research and her no-nonsense and honest approach to following a vegan diet is one that is much-needed. In this episode we chat about ethical veganism vs plant-based, the close relationship that veganism can have with disordered eating, weight loss and gain on a vegan diet, the need for a representation of ALL body types in the media, the issue of BMI as a health measure, the recent spate of YouTubers suffering from SIBO and what that means for the vegan community, raising vegan children and Jessica’s vision for a vegan future. *If a conversation around disordered eating, diets and Veganism make you uncomfortable, or trigger you in any way, then please tune out now.* If you’re still here then get yourself a cup of tea and settle in for this one - it’s a goodie! In this episode, I chat to Lulu Becker, a physiotherapist specialising in women’s health. Lulu is based in Durban and has a passion for helping women to reconnect to, and embrace, their feminine power. She works with women during pregnancy as well as postpartum, and assists with pelvic pain, breastfeeding issues and incontinence. In this episode, we delve into a fascinating discussion about the vagina and the mind-body-emotional connection that occurs with any trauma to the vagina - whether that be from abuse or childbirth. We also chat about the more practical side of the vagina and the pelvic floor and Lulu shares some of her insight and excellent tips around the effect of both pregnancy and caesarean and vaginal birth on the pelvic floor and what we can do to protect and heal our pelvic floors during all of these beautiful life experiences. Just a warning before we begin, Lulu and I do discuss sexual abuse, rape, pregnancy and childbirth in this episode, so if you’re particularly triggered by these topics, then perhaps it’s best to tune out now. I really hope you enjoy this discussion - I absolutely adore and appreciate the amazing work Lulu is doing for women all around the world and I really believe conversations around the topics we discuss are so very important and in urgent need of becoming things we chat about without blinking an eyelid. Our health as women and mothers (if you are) is our most important aid in living beautiful and creative lives and raising strong, well-adjusted children. Hi and welcome to another episode of Walking with Wildflowers. Today I chat to Amy Keevy, the brand curator behind successful South African jewellery studio, Dear Rae, and brilliant artist in her own right. Amy is also the designer and illustrator behind La Luna La Femme - a moon journal and it’s been so amazing having her beside me on this journey to creating our beautiful monthly moon journals for women. If you’ve been hiding under a rock, and have no idea what I’m talking about, back in November, Amy and I, along with astrologist, Michelle McClunan, launched a journal designed specifically to help women track their natural cycle and harness the energy of the lunar cycle to set intentions and create abundance in their lives. We’ve had such great fun with our moon journals and our recent quarterly print run was a huge success, which we hope to repeat again. In this episode, I talk to Amy about art and creativity, working for herself and collaborating with others all whilst holding down a day job, how important social media can be for small brands, the female body, menstrual cycles and, of course, the moon! Hi everyone and welcome to another episode of Walking with Wildflowers - probably the last one for 2018 and this first season! I just wanted to thank each and everyone of of you for every download and share this year! It’s been such fun doing this podcast and I’m so looking forward to creating the next season. I have on board an editor now which is so helpful - I thought I would have time to do it all myself - but as it turns out, no. No I don’t. So shout out to Siobhan Lumsden, who has an amazing podcast of her own called The Lost Art Of Little Things, for helping me out! I really do appreciate it. But thank you again, each and every one of you for all the feedback and messages you’ve sent me regarding the different episodes and conversations we’ve had over the past few months, it really has been so great connecting to you all through this medium. I’m going to be taking a break now to set up next season properly, so you can look forward to more regular episodes with more amazing people! In today’s episode I chat to Amy Heydenrych, a South Africa writer and editor based in Johannesburg. I’ve followed Amy for a long time now, as we both went to Rhodes University and are both bloggers and vegans and we both had our babies last year! It’s been so inspiring watching Amy’s journey over the past few years as she has been so open about her experience as a writer looking to get published! Yup, that’s right, she is a published author, both here in SA and internationally, and her first book, SHAME ON YOU, has now also been picked up by Audible too! I just love how happy Amy is to help other authors and writers get themselves out there. In this episode we chat about the long road to becoming a published author, the danger of social media and wellness industry influencers, being vegan mamas, and how to manifest your dreams into being! I mean, this episode could not scream Walking With Wildflowers any louder! It’s such a great conversation. (If I say so myself. Which I do.) But before we get into it, I just wanted to let you know that, after many, many requests, the La Luna | La Femme moon journals I create with Amy and Michelle are available for order in a Quarterly Print Package which includes beautiful A5 copies of the January, February and March journals, as well as an A5 copy of the Moon Information Booklet. The moon journals each provide a page-a-day to record your feeling and thoughts, your cycle day and physical symptoms, and journal prompts to help you set your intentions for the new and full moons! The information booklet contains all the information you need on the importance of becoming attuned with your natural cycle and harnessing the power of the moon’s energy to bring real magic into your life! This print run is a test for us to see if there is a demand for the print copies, so if you are one of those people that asked about the journals being in hardcopy, please head on over to www.wearethewildflowers.co.za and place your order! Orders close on the 15th of December (which is the end of this week), so time is a-ticking! Head to www.wearethewildflowers.co.za/shop now to pre-order your La Luna | La Femme Print Package now! Hello everyone and welcome to the eighth episode of Walking With Wildflowers! Today I’m chatting to Chereen Strydom, a freelance writer, beauty blogger and fellow lover of all things moon and magic. I’ve known Chereen for a few years now - we connected over social media and blogging back when I first started blogging and when I moved to Cape Town in 2015, she was one of the very first people I made a point of meeting up with! We have become firm friends since and Chereen is such a great support in my life - professionally, emotionally and “Motherly” - is that a word? In this episode, Chereen opens up about the tough year she has had, her family’s decision to move back to Somerset West after a year in Johannesburg, and how and why they have now suddenly found themselves in the tiny country village of Greyton! We also chat about trying to find balance as a mother and freelancer, depression and being open with your kids about your menstrual cycle! I do hope you enjoy! In today’s episode, I chat to Bryni van der Merwe - a true light in my life! I’m not sure how or when we first started following each other on Instagram, but what I do know is that after I went vegan back in December 2014, and after sharing it on my social media, Bryni was pretty much the first person to reach out and be like “me too - I wanna be vegan too! Show me your ways!” From that moment we were friends for life - and then, when I moved to Cape Town, we even met in real life and started our own "weird vegan cult members" whatsapp group - which has grown and grown to include happy little vegans from all around the world! Bryni is a private flight attendant who lives in Cape Town and Nigeria and spends a lot of time travelling the world for work. She also happens to be ridiculously good looking and takes amazingly beautiful photographs of her travels which she shares on her Instagram account - you should follow her, if you don’t already! In this episode, we chat about everything from our intertwined vegan stories to zero waste, menstrual cups, dating non-vegans, why associating veganism with perfectionism is pretty pointless and how doing the best you can every day with the knowledge and resources you have really is the only way to change the world. In this episode, I chat to my lovely doula, Amy Mongie of Souls in Motion, about home birthing. We chat about our birth stories and our decisions to have our babies at home, the South African medical model of birth, the cell memory of birth trauma through generations of women, prenatal yoga and diet, Ina May Gaskin, hynobirthing and how feeling safe during labour is the most important gift you can give a birthing woman. In this week's episode I chat to someone with one of the the biggest hearts I know. She has purple hair, two Boston Terriers and a very healthy obsession with cake and good coffee. If you haven’t guessed already, I’m talking about the wonderful Jane Killian aka GI Jane - Durban based women’s fitness trainer, Secret Sunrise owner and all-round sprinkler of happy energy and good vibes! And as of last week, Jane is also the creator of Unselfishly Me - a course designed to help women embrace and love their inner selves. In this episode we chat about about the “I am enough” movement, our personal journeys in accepting our bodies as they are, the sometimes ugly side of the body positivity, and the awesome role social media can play in helping us choose our own inspirational role models. Hi everyone! We're onto the fourth episode of Walking with Wildflowers and this is another one I've had a lot of requests for. I've always been interested in energy and rituals - reiki, intention-setting, energy healing, yoga, journalling and meditation are things I've been passionate about for a long time. It's only after falling pregnant and birthing my baby that I've truly begun to embrace the magic of working and tracking both the lunar cycles and my own menstrual cycles. Before baby, my period was something I endured - an annoying inconvenience and something shameful that had to be hidden at all costs... but now I see that it's a beautiful and regular reminder of my feminine, life-giving strength. Everything in the natural world from days and seasons and tides works in cycles and how amazing is it that we as women also get to live in sync with the earth, the oceans and the universe through the cycles of our own bodies? There is immense power, comfort and abundance to be found in harnessing the rebirth, energy and death of these natural cycles. Becoming more self-aware as you take stock of your life, health, relationships, vocation and spirituality helps encourage the setting of intentions to manifest changes that will improve both your personal and professional life. It is such a blessing that as women we get to honour that connection to our inner wisdom on a monthly basis. In this episode, I chat with founder of Ritual Kind, Natalie Jepson, about feminine rising and all things ritual - from self-care practices, working with your menstrual cycle and manifesting abundance through lunar ceremonies. This is such a big topic and it really probably should have called for two parts! We chat in very general and practical terms, so please do check the show notes for more resources and further information. Remember these are guidelines, and ultimately, you should do what works for you and what makes you feel comfortable. If nothing in this podcast makes you feel comfortable, that’s ok too - we are all unique individuals on different journeys. If you are, however, someone who feels a connection to the moon and the earth and if you are looking for ways to deepen that connection or to manifest magic in your life, or to become part of a community of supportive women, or if you simply just want to take better care of your body and soul, then this episode will be just up your street! In this much-requested episode, I’ve switched things up a bit and have roped in my lovely fellow vegan friend, Dani De Souza, to chat about being vegan mamas and our decision to raise our daughters vegan. We discuss everything from how we handle taking our girls to kiddies' birthday parties, whether we take any supplements, how you almost have to become an unqualified nutritionist after going vegan, and the unfounded and unfortunate bad rap the humble soya bean gets! Please check the show notes for further insight into our chat. Also, this week, I have a special on my vegan lifestyle book, A Guide for Wildflowers. I use so many of the meals in the guide to feed Imogen - from creamy morning oats to chickpea mayo sandwiches, tomato and rosemary lentil soup, and our personal favourite, vegan mac and cheese! Hello and welcome to the second episode of Walking with Wildflowers. I’m Keri - a writer, mother, creative and newbie podcast-maker - and I do hope you’re ready for a rather messy chat about self-criticism, body positivity, fat-shaming, self-acceptance, my relationship with my own body and what it has taken to get me to start treating the human vessel I reside in kindly. In this episode, I talk about the moment I first started criticising my body, I admit to being a recovering fat-shamer, how we as women need to embrace our voracious appetites for life instead of constantly restricting and punishing ourselves and to reclaim our feminine power by appreciating ourselves just as we are. I discuss my need to start writing a new story in my head, as hard as it may be, regarding dieting, fitness and the ideal female body. I also go on a little feminist tangent and a bit of a plea to older vegans to be kinder to new vegans, especially when it comes to body shaming. I say “wine” and “chocolate” a lot. It’s a difficult, emotional and deeply personal topic and a hard one to execute without offending someone… but overall it’s a message of love and kindness to both myself and women everywhere and a request that we start loving all our different female bodies - for our own sanity and for the sake of our daughters’ futures. This episode has been extremely challenging to put together and is nowhere near as polished as I was hoping it would be…. and having re-listened to it now, I realise again just how much of a sensitive topic it is and how it make some feel uncomfortable or even angry…but as usual, its raw and real and I even left in parts which probably should have become bloopers! Subscribe if you want to keep up to date with new episodes and please rate and review the podcast if you can! If you’d like to get in touch or chat about any of the things I’ve discussed in this episode, you can find me on instagram and twitter at @keribainborough or on Facebook as We Are The Wildflowers Blog. Whether you’re listening to this in the car, on your run or at the gym, whilst you’re washing the dishes or simply chilling on the couch - I do hope you enjoy! Welcome to the first episode of Walking with Wildflowers. Hosted by Keri Bainborough - a mother, writer and creative. Keri promised herself at the beginning of June 2018 that she would record, edit and upload a podcast by the end of the month - purely for the simple joy (and agony!) of making something and putting it out there. So while this episode is in no ways perfect, the entire production is done by Keri herself - from the recording and editing to the artwork and publishing. In this episode (recorded on Keri's daughter’s first birthday), she talks about how and why motherhood has changed her and the way she works - for the better! It is raw and honest - recorded on her morning walk, talking into her phone about everything from her reluctant-to-detach placenta, new mom bod and why being a parent sometimes feels like a never-ending cycle of live-die-repeat.
