How much does what we eat impact our fertility? Certainly food influences pregnancy and fertility much more than most of us know, possibly more than our doctors know! Fortunately, a book is coming that can change all that, and in this episode, Dr. Lora Shahine is talking with the authors about fertility, food, nutrition, the science of food and fertility, the myths surrounding nutrition and reproduction (hint: it's NOT all about BMI), and so much more. Dr. Angela Thyer is a reproductive endocrinologist and Judy Simon is a registered dietitian and reproductive health nutritionist in Seattle, and together they've written Getting to Baby: A Food-First Fertility Plan to Improve Your Odds and Shorten Your Time to Pregnancy.  Getting to Baby is a deep dive into choosing the right foods to reduce inflammation and support a healthy body; eating to support conception, healthy pregnancy, and IVF treatments; and actually enjoying shopping, cooking, and eating. In this episode you'll hear: [0:00] Introducing the idea of fertility nutrition with a focus on plant-based foods [0:51] Nutrition's impact on fertility with medical doctor and registered dietitian [2:31] Nutrition and fertility with a focus on evidence-based information [3:55] Creating a supportive community for people with fertility issues [5:03] Fertility, nutrition, and cooking with guidance from a reproductive endocrinologist and a dietitian [9:55] The importance of plant-based foods and limiting processed foods [15:33] What does a “holistic approach” to nutrition and fertility look like? [21:11] Avoiding restrictive dieting [22:56] Nutrition accessibility [31:03] Lifestyle tips for better health Resources mentioned:  Getting to Baby by Angela Thyer, MD and Judy Simon, RDN (find at Penguin Random House Books) Judy Simon, RD on Instagram - @fertilenutrition Angela Thyer, MD on Instagram @angelathyermd More education on nutrition and fertility: Improving Fertility with Diet and Nutrition with Dr. Lora Shahine https://youtu.be/Lxwv0VLZyEk Foods that Improve Your Fertility with Dr. Lora Shahine https://youtu.be/tBJo9ggmdzA Foods to Avoid When You're Trying to Conceive with Dr. Lora Shahine https://youtu.be/Ch86VS6yxPE Stay Up to Date in Fertility News and Events:  Weekly Newsletter Follow @drlorashahine Instagram | YouTube | Tiktok | Her Books

Happy new year to all you lovely listeners! We start off today as usual, with me complaining – this time it's about my back pain, which went a bit crazy just before Christmas. All good now, though. Aside from that, it's a corker of an episode as today we're talking to Laura Barnhouse, nutritionist, PT and friend of the pod.Diet cultureWe're after a bit of a health rejig in January, even if we are all perfect already (which we are), so we hauled Laura in to help us do exactly that, and to talk about this January diet culture, and body image generally.Weight lossWe talk about the whole concept of women and weightloss – the feeling of taking up too much space in the world, and feeling like we have to address that. We talk about how times have changed in terms of the pandemic, and what that's done to our sense of self and our looks and weight. Again, we talk about school experiences having such a negative effect, both on our perception of exercise and also how we perceive food and our bodies.Healthy relationshipThe really useful bit here is that we ask Laura's advice on how to have a healthy relationship with food and eating, which leads her on to talk about our motivations for getting healthier, and where those motivations come from, and how important it is to figure that bit out first if you're striving for a healthier life and attitude. Really clever stuff that will help all of us this January, no matter what our goals are.LinksWin a pair of Brooks Ghost 14 GTX, worth £140 by entering this podcast-only compo!Do join us on Patreon for exclusive newsletters, free monthly Live chats, and Patreon-only episodes!Come along to the National Running Show in January, and say hello!Follow lovely Laura on Facebook   Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. How Food Affects Our Brain Health

Food is an important part of our brain health.   Does food affect our brain health? Our brains are always working, always turned on. It manages everything that happens in our lives; our thoughts, movements, reactions, emotions, and the mechanics of staying alive. It's working hard even while we're sleeping. Understandably, because of all this activity, our brains require a constant source of fuel. This fuel comes from the food we drink, and like grades of gasoline, higher quality can make a big difference. High-quality brain fuel comes from foods high in vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. We may not notice the effects of poor eating until it's too late. We may like our comfort foods, but does our brain? Have you ever had an instance where you can't stop eating potato chips or pizza? There's a simple reason. The simple carb combined with a high-fat content fires up the brain's signals to continue consuming. While we may laugh at this phenomenon, it's our brain telling us it needs better fuel. We don't get the right message. This is a first in our monthly series on brain health with Dr. Howard.  Brain health is an important topic to me because it's our best defense against disease.   Related Episodes This Is Your Brain on Nutrition – Diet & Brain Health Why Are You Sick, Fat & Tired? Play Episode Listen Later Sep 10, 2019 71:59

Could Cannabis be a cure for Alzheimer's?   Not only have  200+ trials looking for a cure for Alzheimer's failed, a cure in my life doesn't look likely. What if we have had one all along? According to Dementia Care Central the dementia-related conditions that can be helped by CBD include; Alzheimer’s disease, Vascular Dementia, Lewy bodies dementia, Parkinson’s, Frontotemporal dementia and Huntington’s. Additionally, according to researchers at California’s Salk Institute, their 2017 study has found evidence that cannabinoids such as CBD could help remove dementia from brain cells. At the same time, we're looking for a cure for Alzheimer's, we're ignoring a potential natural ally. At the very least it could be a preventative treatment. In the hope that we can avoid developing the disease, or at the very least reducing its effects, are we missing out?  Why are we afraid to investigate this option? In light of this idea, I spoke to Chela of AlzNotes about her experience with her Mom and her use of medicinal cannabis. Coupled with her personal experience, Chela has done more than her share of research on this topic. Given that I have a family history of Alzheimer's I thought it was important to learn more on this topic. Has There Been Research Into Cannabis & Alzheimer's? Notably, there has been a lot of research on cannabis as medicine. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease showed that small amounts of THC can slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s in patients. Additionally, the right balance of CBD-THC can greatly reduce dementia induced anxiety or aggression. Another key point is that THC is known to be a powerful antioxidant with neuroprotective properties. However, the 2014 study reported that the compound directly affects Alzheimer’s pathology by decreasing amyloid beta levels. Obviously, this is a mind-blowing result. Additionally, as you'll hear, Cannabis has many other potential healing properties worth looking into. Natural cures come with far fewer side effects so they're worth researching. In short, I'm sure you'll find this episode as fascinating as I did. Researching this topic further is definitely on my list! Don't you owe it to yourself to do the same? She also focuses on helping athletes, pregnant women, lactating women and children to achieve optimal health, well-being and performance while following vegan or vegetarian diets. Jessica graduated with her Masters degree in Nutrition in 2017 and aims to use her skills as a researcher to further evaluate the scientific literature and spread the message of a plant-based diet.   Jessica knows her stuff and I just loved chatting to her! She studies the research and her no-nonsense and honest approach to following a vegan diet is one that is much-needed. In this episode we chat about ethical veganism vs plant-based, the close relationship that veganism can have with disordered eating, weight loss and gain on a vegan diet, the need for a representation of ALL body types in the media, the issue of BMI as a health measure, the recent spate of YouTubers suffering from SIBO and what that means for the vegan community, raising vegan children and Jessica’s vision for a vegan future.   *If a conversation around disordered eating, diets and Veganism make you uncomfortable, or trigger you in any way, then please tune out now.*   If you’re still here then get yourself a cup of tea and settle in for this one - it’s a goodie!
