Democrats took some wins yesterday in key elections around the country. Notably, voters approved an Ohio ballot measure to lock abortion rights into the state constitution. It looks like they've legalized recreational marijuana too. Kentucky voters are keeping Democratic Governor Andy Beshear and Democrats collected seats in the Virginia legislature. Republicans did win in Mississippi, where Governor Tate Reeves will stay on. Is that an indicator of where the 2024 Presidential election is headed? We will talk to John Rothmann about it. Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX is facing 115 years in prison when he's sentenced in March. He was convicted of all seven counts against him in a fraud trial. Does this send a message to the cryptocurrency industry or is this basic fraud that could have happened in any sector? Michael Hiltzik with the LA Times will unravel it. For 4 days, from between 17- 20 July, Rwanda's capital will welcome thousands of guests from around the world who've come to attend the Women Deliver 2023 Conference. With its slogan ‘Where the world comes together to advance Gender Equality' the Women Deliver conference will host the great and the good of the global gender equality movement. Choosing Rwanda as the host nation was, in my opinion, an easy decision. Not only did it have the capacity to host the event due to its investment in the MICE industry, the country itself was at the forefront of the gender equality conversation.  Rwanda's leadership made the strategic decision to turn its back on its misogynistic past and place equal rights for all its citizens, regardless of sex, at the heart of its governance model. Because of that decision, today women are at the forefront of everything that is Rwanda. They are in the security services, they are in the halls of parliament and they are well represented in the private sector.  The success that Rwanda is enjoying in the journey towards gender equality is not a fluke. It all started with overturning laws that were discriminatory and replacing them with better ones.  To help us understand just where Rwanda came from, legally speaking, to where it is today when it comes to the legal protections that women enjoy, I am joined by Dr Usta Kaitesi.  A PhD in law, Dr. Usta is the CEO of the Rwanda Goverance Board and a commissioner in the Rwanda Law Reform Commission. She was formerly a law professor in the National University.  If you want to share your thoughts on the topics I discuss use the hashtag #LongFormRw on Twitter and follow us on Twitter and Instagram on our handle @TheLongFormRwBe a part of the conversation.

During the COVID-19 pandemic women health care leaders stood out. Jurisdictions with women as elected leaders or top public health policy experts seemed to manage the challenges of the pandemic a bit better, and with a bit more public trust. Well before the pandemic, in parts of rural India communities that train Dalit women as community health workers often experienced dramatic improvements in health outcomes, all the while challenging rigid gender norms. We know that gender equity in health delivery, policy and management only brings better outcomes. Yet, the glass ceiling remains, and is seemingly reinforced. In countries where more than half the medical students are women, the majority of specialists remain men. In other countries women who enter the health professions as nurses stay planted as such while men ascend to leadership roles. For Ann Keeling this needs to change. Listen to this episode of GDP where she discusses why we'd all benefit from taking gender equity seriously in global health. Ann Keeling is Women in Global Health's Senior Fellow, is a British citizen whose 40-year career in global health and social development has included posts in Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Caribbean, Belgium, the USA, and her home country, the UK. She held the post of Head of Gender Equality Policy with the UK Government and is currently the Chair of the NGO Age International and Senior Fellow of Women in Global Health. Ann Keeling has been CEO of two global health NGOs, was UNFPA Country Representative Pakistan, and Director Commonwealth Secretariat leading on Health, Education, and Gender. We're in climate crisis – and marginalized women, girls, and gender-diverse people bear the brunt. Young climate justice leaders are ringing the alarm. It's about time we listen. In a sense, climate change and global warming hurts everyone. But we're not all equally impacted. Some people have more resources to deal with fallout. Some of us are more or less protected from consequences of growing carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas, emissions and the burning of fossil fuel, sea-level rise, methane, and more. It's a matter of power. The solution lies not only in mitigation and renewable energy. We need climate justice. This is where gender justice comes in: the most vulnerable women, girls, and Two Spirit, trans and non-binary people experience the worst outcomes in climate crisis. And their leadership in climate solutions is more important than ever. Young feminists are strong voices for the intertwined goal of climate justice and gender justice. We can't have one without the other. Our guest Sydney Piggott (she/her) is a social impact leader and advocate for gender equity, climate action, and social justice on a global scale. She's been a subject matter expert in several international forums including the Commission on the Status of Women, Women Deliver, Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference for Young Parliamentarians, and RightsCon. Passionate about supporting young changemakers, Sydney has worked with several youth initiatives focused on gender and climate justice including the Ontario Council for International Cooperation's Youth Policy-Maker's Hub, Apathy is Boring's RISE program, Community Knowledge Exchange's Cohort X, and the Online Thinkathon Challenge in partnership with the European Union. She is also a contributor at Btchcoin News and a member of the Equal Futures Network Advisory Committee. Sydney brings an intersectional feminist lens to all of her work, informed by her proud Afro-Caribbean heritage. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Vancouver Monday afternoon to help kick off the official opening of the Women Deliver 2019 global conference, a four-day summit described as "the world's largest conference on gender equality and the health, rights, and well-being of girls and women."Trudeau was introduced by Katja Iversen, president of Women Deliver, as a "fellow feminist.""Progress can backslide. We're seeing it happen. Gender equality is under attack. I can only imagine how hard it is to be a feminist on the front-lines," Trudeau said.Trudeau, who describes himself as a feminist, formed Canada's 1st gender balanced cabinet in 2015. He's recently had to defend those credentials after ejecting Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott from the Liberal caucus amid turmoil over the government's handling of the SNC-Lavalin case.As he addressed the crowd on Monday, Trudeau talked about the role of social media in spreading "abhorrent" views and pushing them into the public arena."Individuals and interest groups are trying to roll back women's rights, and politicians are giving into the pressure, shamefully campaigning to undo women's hard won victories," he said.Trouver l'autre mystérieuxL'amour est un mystère pour ceux qui le vivent, un mystère pour ceux qui le regardent. Covid-19 is moving from a pandemic to an endemic disease. The virus will be with us for a long time to come, maybe forever. Dr. David Nabarro, special envoy of the World Health Organization, says we need to prepare for this with strong leadership - both local and global. Global GoalsCast attends Dr. Nabarro's latest briefing where he introduces us to health workers who have made a real difference controlling the virus and supporting those struck down by it in their local community. These include a nurse-run campaign to isolate and vaccinate in Nepal to a program in the United Kingdom to assist long-Covid sufferers.  “The sort of leadership that's needed is leadership that connects,” John Atkinson, a specialist in systems change, tells Dr. Nabarro. “Leadership that doesn't seek credit for itself. Leadership that knows there's no limit to what you can achieve if you don't give a damn who takes the credit.” Invisible leadership, Dr. Nabarro calls this. Globally, Nabarro calls for a new approach from rich countries. “it's ok to lead for the world,” he tells the leaders of the G7 countries, explaining that protecting just their own constituents won't work. He argues that rich countries should stop holding vaccines for booster doses when poor countries still need first doses. Protecting the vulnerable everywhere is the only sensible strategy while vaccine is scare. “You are actually serving your constituents better if you lead for the world.” Global GoalsCast is co-hosted by Edie Lush and Claudia Romo Edelman. Other guests on this episode include: Durga Sapkota, a nurse in Katmandu who continues to organize a community public health response to combat Covid-19 in Nepal. She is an ambassador for Women Deliver, a Global GoalsCast partner. Clare Rayner, a specialist occupational health physician and honorary lecturer at the University of Manchester Medical School Iman Ahmed, a Global Public Health expert currently working vaccinating the Sudanese diaspora in Canada. Nazeem, a singer-songwriter from The Gambia. This episode is brought to you by our listeners. Thanks also to CBS News Digital and Universal Production Music.

We speak with Richard Wainwright - a lifelong environmental activist who works with fern.org, an NGO dedicated to protecting forests and those who depend on them.  He is joined by his daughter Olivia Wainwright, a fifteen year old environmental activist who works with a fabulous organization called Women Deliver.  We are struck how the climate crisis has become a back burner issue due to the pandemic that has consumed the news cycle.  We wanted to get back to the most important issue affecting human beings, something we cannot forget amidst all of this.  Richard's experience during the pandemic and how it has affected his work speaks volumes - yet he is also aware of the impact of less plane travel and how speaking from our homes and moving about less has been positive environmentally if not in direct policy.  Olivia speaks for her generation and how her entire life has been tempered by climate crisis and how that uncertainty for her future fuels the way she looks at the world.  We cover the influence of politicians who don't represent the diversity of their country nor the diversity of the world continue to lead us in direction that benefits them and their ilk and leaves the rest of us behind.  A fabulous discussion with the old guard of environmental activism and the youth movement and energy that must save themselves and this planet amidst mistakes of the past.

Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Francisca experienced inequality from birth. She had experienced all types of harassment and discrimination that are considered a norm for the culture and society that she lived in. Growing up, she had been a sibling with the lesser share, a molested student and employee, and a wife in a toxic marriage struggling to raise her child. Having endured this reality, Francisca started to understand the root cause of this inequality and began a lifelong commitment to taking a stand and speaking up against gender inequality.  Francisca believes in Maternal Power, the sacred bond created when a child begins its journey in its mother's body, intricately bound by a connection even stronger than the umbilical cord. She is convinced that the untapped potential of maternal power is a transformational force in the struggle for gender equality.  In her first published book, Mother, Behold Thy Son, Francisca shares her most personal experiences to show how mothers can use storytelling — coupled with their innate maternal power — to not just help their sons to reject toxic masculinity, but also to model how their daughters can become true equals. In this conversation, Francisca talks about how we are all victims of the same system -- a system in our culture and society that propagates generational inequality -- and how important it is for us to be aware of it, and ultimately work to change it. Francisca also talks about the role of music in her advocacy for change. She plays the Mbira and speaks highly of its therapeutic quality and how her children taught her to play it.They produced a twelve track album with her three children where they sing songs that are meant to transform undesired social, economic, and political realities. Aside from publishing her book, Francisca is a double winner of the Nunavut Iqaluit Status of Women Gender Equality Competition held in 2015. She was recognized as one of 57 mobilizers for gender equality and represented Canada at the Women Deliver 2019 Vancouver Conference.  Mother Behold Thy Son is available internationally on Amazon.

COVID-19 has wreaked havoc the world over, and recent data shows that the hardest hit will be the world’s women and girls and populations impacted by racism and discrimination. This week’s Friday Podcast highlights remarks from a recent Wilson Center event sponsored by EMD Serono, the biopharmaceutical business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany in the United States and Canada, on the impact of COVID-19 on race and gender inequities. “Mortality of men [due to COVID-19] is higher but let me just emphasize that women play an outsized role in responding not only to COVID-19, but in many of the pandemics,” said Katja Iversen, President and CEO of Women Deliver. “The default health worker is now female,” said Dr. Roopa Dhatt, Founder and Executive Director of Women in Global Health. “Women make up majority of the workforce, but they remain clustered in the lower status, lower paid jobs, mainly the frontline. They also occupy most of invisible lower status jobs as well, so we need to factor in that they're subject to more sexual harassment and violence as a result and are not part of the decision-making table.” “In the midst of this pandemic, bad policies and structural barriers may contribute to millions of people losing access to essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services,” said Zara Ahmed, Associate Director for Federal Issues at Guttmacher Institute. To minimize the negative impacts of COVID-19 on SRH services, Ahmed recommends defining and promoting SRH as essential; strengthening supply chains to make SRH medicines more accessible; making contraception available without a prescription; adopting innovative care models of care; and addressing the unique needs of vulnerable and marginalized populations. UNFPA projections show that for every three months of lockdown, there will be an additional 15 million cases of gender-based violence. “In terms of gender-based violence, we're seeing an increase, and this is because of isolation, locked down, restricted movements, tensions in the households from financial and economic stresses,” said Leyla Sharafi, Senior Gender Advisor of UNFPA. Further marginalized groups like women with disabilities, indigenous women, and women and girls living in humanitarian settings have a heightened risk of experiencing violence, said Sharafi. COVID-19 also exacerbates racial inequities. “So, we have three main root causes [of inequities] and those are racism, classism, and gender oppression,” said Dr. Joia Crear-Perry, Founder and President of the National Birth Equity Collaborative. “We do know that black women in the United States, despite income or education, are still more likely to die in childbirth than their white counterparts, so that's really where you see the overarching how those inequities and those beliefs around hierarchy can come together in one space and cause people to die,” said Dr. Crear-Perry. Health care providers are at the center of addressing inequities in the healthcare system, said Dr. Neel Shah, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School and a practicing OB-GYN in Boston. “One of the challenges that I'm seeing right now is that the biology of this disease and the sociology of this disease really interact, and the people that are historically experts in the biology aren't fully attending to the sociology and honestly, vice-versa,” said Dr. Shah. “Currently we have to isolate people who are both symptomatic and asymptomatic which is effectively everyone. And isolating everyone takes all of the existing inequities in our society and it throws them into a pressure cooker.”

India’s Female Labour Force Participation rate is at an all-time low across industries except for one—garment manufacturing. In fact, the garment sector is made up of more than 50% women workers and is a critical driver of job creation for women. But at the same time it is an industry rife with difficulties and has perhaps the furthest to go in ensuring that women are truly empowered, respected and able to rise. This is a challenge our guest, Anant Ahuja, knows only too well. In this episode he talks to us about the challenges of trying to transform an old industry from the inside out by exploring ways to redesign the working experience to better support and empower female workers. But, as Anant says: “I think this idea of creating high quality jobs is not that easy, no matter who you're creating it for. I think there's a lot of areas to improve on, and yeah I think there's a lot of work left for us to do.” With special guest Anant Ahuja Anant Ahuja is the Head of Organisational Development (OD) at Shahi, India’s largest apparel manufacturer employing over 100,000 people. Since 2012, Anant has been spearheading positive change across the business through innovation and strategy to align the company’s growth with the development of people, community, and the environment. He has spoken about business and human rights at the United Nations and on women’s empowerment at Women Deliver. He believes that the private sector is a critical lever for development, which led him to start Good Business Lab (GBL), a labour innovation start-up that uses research to find common ground between worker wellbeing and business interests. Through his work at Shahi and GBL, Anant wants to change the way businesses operate. MORE TO READ. The business of gender equality. For Katja Iversen, gender equality is everyone’s business, and it’s not business as usual. As the president and CEO of Women Deliver, an organization that actively delivers for women around the world in the fight against gender inequality, Katja has watched as powerful people – often men – have developed gender equality fatigue.“Some people say they are getting fatigued with the discussion about gender equality. You can be fatigued if you worked for 20 years nonstop on changing something, but you cannot be fatigued if you just had to listen to something for a couple years.” says Katja.Reframing the gender equality conversationKatja is passionate about focusing on the economic argument of gender equality, rather than just the moral one. With the power of data, research and evidence to show how gender equality contributes to the bottom line, she is hoping to reframe the gender equality conversation.Women are good for business With a focus on how gender equality benefits business, economy, community and country rather than just the individual, Katja aims to show that solving the gender pay gap and providing equal opportunity is not just morally correct, it makes sense financially. In this episode of Women on the Move, Katja stresses how important it is to reframe gender equality as part of core business, and she has the data to back it up. The fourth global Women Deliver conference in May brought nearly 6,000 experts and advocates to Copenhagen to address the health and rights and women and girls, including a small group of young midwives who attended a symposium beforehand. “I went in a little bit skeptical,” says Alix Bacon, president of the Midwives Association of British Columbia and one of 32 women under 35 who received a scholarship to attend, in this week’s podcast. “And I came home a changed woman and a believer.” Bacon said the ability to escape the immediacy of the day-to-day clinical requirements of midwifery and think about how they can grow as a network was invaluable. “There isn't an advocacy component to your midwifery training,” she says, “And this is where the midwifery symposium really shined. It addressed our weaknesses, regulation, research, policy.” In the context of regulation and public funding, midwifery in Canada is relatively new, Bacon says, which puts them in a unique position among wealthy countries to partner with developing countries facing some of the same challenges. They have developed a 30-year roadmap from “zero to functional that we can share with our partners,” for example, she says. One such partnership is with South Sudan and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The “twinning” project matches midwives together with the aim of increasing capacity, “supporting a strengthened, enabled environment for gender-sensitive maternity care.” Partnerships like this are crucial for the world’s newest country, which has among the world’s highest maternal, newborn, and child mortality rates. “Only 15 percent of births are attended by a skilled birth attendant,” Bacon says. The latest renewed violence and mass displacement has “had wide-reaching effects on our ability to implement this project,” she says. They had to pull Canadian staff out of the country in June, but Bacon still believes in the promise of the partnership. “It's about positioning midwives as experts in maternity care,” she says. “And when you're positioned as an expert and supported by the ideal partner, you grab the attention of policymakers locally.” With a global standard of education and the proper policies in place, “midwives can meet 87 percent of the needs of women and children,” says Bacon. “We also happen to be terribly cost-effective, which really makes us a best buy when it comes to maternal newborn child health.” Alix Bacon spoke at the Wilson Center on July 18, 2016. We highlight the forthcoming Women Deliver conference which takes place in Copenhagen Denmark from 16-19 May. Mariam Claeson: Quality, Not Quantity of Care for Maternal and Child Health

“It's not about counting how many times a mother interacts with antenatal services or comes to the facility,” says Dr. Mariam Claeson, the director of maternal newborn and child health at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in this week’s podcast. “But it's what happens in these encounters that matters.” One month after the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Claeson and her colleagues in the maternal health community met in Mexico City at the 2015 Global Maternal and Newborn Health Conference. The conference marked the first opportunity for health and development advocates to take stock of the successes and failures of the Millennium Development Goals and discuss a common strategy for implementing the maternal health targets of the SDGs. Improving and measuring quality of care, and not only quantity, was a major focus. For Claeson, such a “woman-centered” approach is best achieved with an integrative model of care – one that combines primary care, family planning services, reproductive health, and other entry points into the health system so women do not need to go to separate facilities for each. “We know,” she says, “that there is a very strong evidence base for why one should do integrative care, integrative measurement, and quality delivery.” Since Mexico City, Claeson says that global partners have been gearing up “to think more systematically about quality across the continuum” as well as a “systems approach to quality and countries wanting to make that part of their broader national quality movement.” “This is the first time,” Claeson continues, “we have countries committed to actually reducing...maternal and newborn mortality in the SDGs.” And, she says, thanks to Every Woman Every Child, a roadmap created by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2010, “we have targets to monitor progress.” In a month, many in the global maternal health community will descend on Copenhagen for Women Deliver 2016. The conference is a chance to further capitalize on momentum around the integrative model laid out in Mexico City. Yet, Claeson warns that staying focused on women, girls, mothers, and newborns will require a larger effort. “It's not just the business of the health sector,” she says, “but how do we get other sectors to also stay focused when we talk about women and girls?” Dr. Mariam Claeson spoke at the Wilson Center on April 13, 2016.

During Hour One, our guest will be Susan Yoshihara, Vice President for Research at the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM), and Director of the International Organizations Research Group (IORG). Ms. Yoshihara argues that as abortionists believe they are in the home stretch, science has tripped them up. The frustration on the part of abortion activists within the United Nations and other independent organizations materialized in their Women Deliver conference flop in Washington D.C. a week ago. Under the guise of "maternal health," the abortion groups aimed to drum up $12 billion in additional funding, while also drafting a formal relations government document that would fuel their march toward a worldwide promotion of "family planning." The facts, and science, has contradicted the abortionists, and now their agenda of murder is on the ropes. And as the reports emerge, women are turning against the abortionist agenda in droves. Our second hour guest is New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer who commissioned a poll that found America's number one hero is. . .Dad! Says Meltzer of the results, "This shows the impact fathers still have in society. Heroes For My Son is his new inspirational book that highlights father-like heroes like George Washington, Mr. Rogers, and the Wright Brothers, all of whom have one common thread, fatherhood.
