Teresa Zapeta is a Maya Indigenous leader from Guatemala and the Executive Director of the International Indigenous Women's Forum, a global network that has spent 25 years building Indigenous women's movements capable of holding democracies together when state institutions fail.In 2023, her movement was central to the 106-day resistance that protected Guatemala's democratic transition. A successful, violence-free campaign with lessons for any movement committed to protecting such things. In this conversation, recorded live at Women Deliver 2026 in Melbourne, Teresa sits down with Women's Agenda's Angela Priestley to talk about the funding gap that sees just 1.4% of global women's grant-making reach Indigenous women's organisations, why "care as leadership" is a counter-strategy to authoritarianism rather than just a value statement, and what global feminist media — including Women's Agenda — keeps getting wrong about Indigenous women's leadership.Backlash Conversations is a Women's Agenda Podcast series, recorded live at Women Deliver 2026 in Melbourne. Dr Taveeshi Gupta is the lead researcher behind The State of the World's Fathers 2026, Equimundo's tracking study of global fatherhood, which has been run every two years since 2015. The just-released 2026 edition surveyed 8,000 parents across 16 countries, and the headline finding is striking: in just three years, between 2023 and 2026, attitudes about who should do care work have measurably gone backwards. The number of fathers who think boys shouldn't be taught to change a nappy has almost doubled. In this conversation, recorded live at Women Deliver 2026 in Melbourne, Taveeshi sits down with Women's Agenda's Angela Priestley to unpack the data, the contradiction between what fathers want and what they believe, the trap of the "wallet dad" identity, and the surprising political constituency that nobody is currently organising: fathers who say they'd pay higher taxes for public care services, at a higher rate than mothers do.Backlash Conversations is a Women's Agenda Podcast series, recorded live at Women Deliver 2026 in Melbourne. After the 2026 Women Deliver conference in Melbourne, we discuss what real inclusion looks like – does it mean simply inviting diverse voices to an existing table or dismantling the structure itself? Rachel and Jordan in Melbourne are joined by Nikki Sullivan in Adelaide to explore the tension between tokenistic representation and the power of strategic coalition building across identity lines. We also explore the presence of colonial and military frameworks within a feminist space, the unique visibility of intersex voices, and the urgent need to move beyond siloed identity politics toward issue-based alliances. Julie Inman Grant features in our latest series of Backlash Conversations, recorded live at Women Deliver in Melbourne. She shares why she believes the social media ban in Australia is a long game, the success achieved and the work that's still to be done. And she outlines what she describes as "outrage", a vicious cycle of content online that sucks in people of all ages, but is especially problematic for young people. As for how the regulation is working to hold tech platforms to account, she says: "Some companies will come to the table, and some will see us in court." Just six weeks ago, Maria Antonieta Alcalde stepped up to take on one of the toughest gigs globally: leading the International Planned Parenthood Federation at arguably one of its most challenging times in history. But with three decades of successfully fighting for women's rights across Latin America, she's got the experience and energy to take on the role, as funding cuts, the Trump administration, and a well-funded network globally are pushing to roll back hard-fought rights. Maria was recently in Melbourne for Women Deliver 2026, where she met with Women's Agenda's Angela Priestley to record this conversation live. This is the first of our Backlash Conversations, featuring some of the biggest global leaders fighting for women's rights. Maria shares what the world can learn from Latin America's grassroots playbook, why she rejects the term "backlash" to describe the global rollback of women's rights, and what Australia's $49 million in family-planning aid is actually achieving across the Pacific. Plus, the incredible gains she believes Australian women can help achieve for our sisters across the Pacific. Today, we begin with a word that, in our times, has for some shifted from a symbol of support to something closer to criticism—even mockery: feminism. Melbourne is currently at the centre of a major global conversation on women's rights, as Women Deliver 2026 brings together leaders, activists and policymakers from around the world. But the question is—when we look at the West and South Asia, particularly countries like Pakistan and India, is the struggle for women's rights really the same?

Recorded at the Women Deliver conference, this episode of Think Change – produced in partnership with GWL Voices – sets out the stakes for gender equality and multilateralism at a moment of deep geopolitical strain, and asks what the race for the next UN Secretary-General reveals about both.Recent rollbacks on gender rights and climate action are not isolated. They are part of a broader political project that mobilises “traditional values” and divisive narratives to hold onto power, weaken accountability and challenge universal rights. These dynamics are playing out not only within states, but inside multilateral institutions themselves – and they are already shaping the race for the next UN Secretary-General.As the selection process begins, the question is not only who leads the UN, but what kind of leadership is politically possible. Campaigns like 1 for 8 Billion, supported by ODI Global, are calling for a more transparent, inclusive and merit-based process, and for Member States to nominate women candidates. But this is not a neutral contest. It is a deeply political one.We are already seeing how gender is being weaponised within it, with opposition to candidates framed through ideological lines, including attacks on candidates who support rights-based positions on abortion and women's autonomy. In this episode, we explore how these dynamics are playing out and whether feminist leadership offers not just a normative vision, but a practical strategy for rebuilding legitimacy, resisting backlash and making multilateralism work in a more contested world. The video recording of this episode is now available on our website and on YouTube.GuestsSara Pantuliano (host), Chief Executive, ODI GlobalHelen Clark, Former Prime Minister of New Zealand and Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)Cristina Gallach, former UN Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public InformationKate Gilmore, Former UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human RightsRelated resourcesInside the global backlash (Resources hub, ODI Global)Advancing gender rights at the Human Rights Council in times of backlash (Report, ODI Global)How women's movements lead demands for democracy in the face of backlash and politicised religion (Report, ODI Global)

For 4 days, from between 17- 20 July, Rwanda's capital will welcome thousands of guests from around the world who've come to attend the Women Deliver 2023 Conference. With its slogan ‘Where the world comes together to advance Gender Equality' the Women Deliver conference will host the great and the good of the global gender equality movement. Choosing Rwanda as the host nation was, in my opinion, an easy decision. Not only did it have the capacity to host the event due to its investment in the MICE industry, the country itself was at the forefront of the gender equality conversation.  Rwanda's leadership made the strategic decision to turn its back on its misogynistic past and place equal rights for all its citizens, regardless of sex, at the heart of its governance model. Because of that decision, today women are at the forefront of everything that is Rwanda. They are in the security services, they are in the halls of parliament and they are well represented in the private sector.  The success that Rwanda is enjoying in the journey towards gender equality is not a fluke. It all started with overturning laws that were discriminatory and replacing them with better ones.  To help us understand just where Rwanda came from, legally speaking, to where it is today when it comes to the legal protections that women enjoy, I am joined by Dr Usta Kaitesi.  A PhD in law, Dr. Usta is the CEO of the Rwanda Goverance Board and a commissioner in the Rwanda Law Reform Commission. She was formerly a law professor in the National University.  If you want to share your thoughts on the topics I discuss use the hashtag #LongFormRw on Twitter and follow us on Twitter and Instagram on our handle @TheLongFormRwBe a part of the conversation.

During the COVID-19 pandemic women health care leaders stood out. Jurisdictions with women as elected leaders or top public health policy experts seemed to manage the challenges of the pandemic a bit better, and with a bit more public trust. Well before the pandemic, in parts of rural India communities that train Dalit women as community health workers often experienced dramatic improvements in health outcomes, all the while challenging rigid gender norms. We know that gender equity in health delivery, policy and management only brings better outcomes. Yet, the glass ceiling remains, and is seemingly reinforced. In countries where more than half the medical students are women, the majority of specialists remain men. In other countries women who enter the health professions as nurses stay planted as such while men ascend to leadership roles. For Ann Keeling this needs to change. Listen to this episode of GDP where she discusses why we'd all benefit from taking gender equity seriously in global health. Ann Keeling is Women in Global Health's Senior Fellow, is a British citizen whose 40-year career in global health and social development has included posts in Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Caribbean, Belgium, the USA, and her home country, the UK. She held the post of Head of Gender Equality Policy with the UK Government and is currently the Chair of the NGO Age International and Senior Fellow of Women in Global Health. Ann Keeling has been CEO of two global health NGOs, was UNFPA Country Representative Pakistan, and Director Commonwealth Secretariat leading on Health, Education, and Gender. Between 2008 and 2012 she was Chief Executive Officer of the International Diabetes Federation, founded the NCD (Non-Communicable Diseases) Alliance, and as Chair, led the successful campaign for the 2011 UN High-Level Summit on NCDs. Ann Keeling spent 9 years in Pakistan with the British Council, DFID, and UNDP working on human development and women's rights. She also held senior posts with the Governments of Papua New Guinea and Pakistan. Global youth activists have emerged as the most inspiring voices in the climate movement. They have organized and campaigned to demand concrete and ambitious action from world leaders, and they have successfully put the climate emergency at the center of the global political agenda. We're in climate crisis – and marginalized women, girls, and gender-diverse people bear the brunt. Young climate justice leaders are ringing the alarm. It's about time we listen. In a sense, climate change and global warming hurts everyone. But we're not all equally impacted. Some people have more resources to deal with fallout. Some of us are more or less protected from consequences of growing carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas, emissions and the burning of fossil fuel, sea-level rise, methane, and more. It's a matter of power. The solution lies not only in mitigation and renewable energy. We need climate justice. This is where gender justice comes in: the most vulnerable women, girls, and Two Spirit, trans and non-binary people experience the worst outcomes in climate crisis. And their leadership in climate solutions is more important than ever. Young feminists are strong voices for the intertwined goal of climate justice and gender justice. We can't have one without the other. Our guest Sydney Piggott (she/her) is a social impact leader and advocate for gender equity, climate action, and social justice on a global scale. She's been a subject matter expert in several international forums including the Commission on the Status of Women, Women Deliver, Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference for Young Parliamentarians, and RightsCon. Passionate about supporting young changemakers, Sydney has worked with several youth initiatives focused on gender and climate justice including the Ontario Council for International Cooperation's Youth Policy-Maker's Hub, Apathy is Boring's RISE program, Community Knowledge Exchange's Cohort X, and the Online Thinkathon Challenge in partnership with the European Union. She is also a contributor at Btchcoin News and a member of the Equal Futures Network Advisory Committee. Sydney brings an intersectional feminist lens to all of her work, informed by her proud Afro-Caribbean heritage.
