The consequences of related grade school traumas stay with us our entire lives. We also lean into fighting deliberate efforts at trans erasure. In the back half of the show, Jonny shares exerptes from oral histories that are (and are not) part of the upcoming installation in the Sharp Museum on the SIU Campus, "Queer Stories/Queer Spaces: Histories and Queertographies." [This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. If you have suggestions or feedback on how I can earn your paid subscription, shoot me an email: cmclymer@gmail.com. And if this is too big of a commitment, I'm always thankful for a simple cup of coffee.]Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility, often shortened to Trans Day of Visibility (or TDOV).It was created by Rachel Crandall Crocker in Michigan in 2009, and it's now celebrated in countries around the world. Most estimates put trans and nonbinary people at between 0.5 and 1 percent of the total U.S. population, but some data suggests we may be as high as two percent. Personally, I think it's higher than that. I believe there are millions of closeted trans and nonbinary and gender-expansive and gender-questioning people in our country who don't have the necessary encouragement and resources to live authentically. I don't need to elaborate on how our political climate has been saturated with an ongoing campaign of fear and terror against trans people. That's why visibility is so important: it saves lives, it gives voice to the voiceless, and it offers joy and hope and comfort where scarce.I would not be alive today were it not for three primary blessings: 1) friends of all backgrounds who ensured I had love and safety and dignity, 2) the grace of a merciful and loving God who kept me buoyed through many difficult years of feeling incongruent with the world around me, and 3) every trans and nonbinary person whose visibility gave me strength and confidence to come out in my own time.I exist today in my authenticity because of the visibility of trans and nonbinary people whose selflessness and courage paved roads that have permitted me to navigate the world with an expansive liberation in broader society they never got to experience.I think of the closeted trans girl in Central Texas who once felt so alone and scared and ashamed of how I was born. For many years, I prayed every day that God would cleanse me of my desire to be who I really am, and it took a long time to recognize that being trans is a gift from God and part of my soul's commission.I thank God that I'm trans. I can't help but feel sympathy for the tens of millions of non-trans people in our country who are constantly burdened and tortured with struggling to meet the gendered expectations demanded of them by so much of society.I think many non-trans people struggle with how our culture successfully and cruelly controls them, forcing them to be who they're not, shaming them who they really are, all in service to a painful and unnecessary gendered framework that insists on an unforgiving rigidity solely meant to avoid discomfort based on irrational fear.I think non-trans people who hate those of us who are trans are really motivated by a taught fear of themselves. It has to be terrifying to suppress oneself, only to witness people who have rejected that painful suppression. Every transphobic argument can basically be boiled down to: "I actually don't know the science at all or have a good argument here, but trans people challenge my long held view of the world and it's very uncomfortable and everyone should be expected to move around my discomfort."There's obvious bigotry in that mindset, of course, but there's also an extraordinary and unyielding and obvious pain, too.Trans people are a constant reminder that there's an entire world outside of what most non-trans people have been aggressively and irrationally conditioned to accept.Today is about trans visibility and trans joy, to be sure, but I would also like to believe it can mean so much more. It can mean that non-trans people feel greater comfort and acceptance in embracing their own authenticity—however that may look—by the example trans and nonbinary people set.I want every trans and nonbinary child in this country to be safe and loved and empowered, and I also want that for every non-trans child. I want every trans and nonbinary adult to be safe and loved and empowered, and I also want that for every non-trans adult.I think that's an essential North Star worthy of any compass. That's why I'm visible, and that's what I wish for all of you, too.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication.

We close out Season 3 with longtime friend of the pod and iconic artist, Cassils. We talk about the trajectory of Cassils's art career starting with early childhood paintings on genitals, to putting their body through peril as a means of waking up viewers to the struggles of the queer and trans experience. In Cassils's view, history does not repeat itself, but it rhymes. Their work is not only a vehicle for social change, it is steeped in the tactics of queer artist/activists of the 70s and 80s. Cassils uses their body heavily in their work, sometimes putting themself in precarious situations to convey the urgency and immediacy of the issues they are tackling. Cassils most recent piece draws inspiration from die-ins and the AIDS quilt. They will create a large scale cyanotype for Trans Day of Visibility at the end of the month at the Lincoln Memorial on the Mall in Washington D.C. Our conversation touches on a number of Cassils' pieces including Human Measure, Becoming an Image, In Plain Sight and and the throughline they weave through each. Their upcoming action with the NCET will take place on March 31st in D.C. To learn more about Cassils (or to take part in their TDOV action) visit their site -www.cassils.net - or follow them on IG @cassilsartistCASSILS is a transgender artist who makes their own body the material and protagonist of their performances. Cassils's art contemplates the history(s) of LGBTQI+ violence, representation, struggle and survival. For Cassils, performance is a form of social sculpture: Drawing from the idea that bodies are formed in relation to forces of power and social expectations, Cassils work investigates historical contexts to examine the present moment. This is our last episode of Season 3. It's a time to celebrate the contributions and successes of transgender and nonbinary people. It's also a time to shine a light on the work ahead to end the disproportionate level of violence and discrimination transgender people endure, particularly BIPOC trans folx. With an onslaught of legislation attempting to bloc trans people from receiving basic rights, there's a role you can play. You can begin by showing up as an ally, or a person helping to build a more gender inclusive world. This matters given that nearly 500 anti-transgender bills are actively being considered in nearly every state across the U.S., many of which target the health & well-being of trans children. Our guest today, Dr. Lulu, is a board-certified pediatrician and CEO of Dr. Lulu's Life Coaching Lounge. She is a queer mother of a transgender adult and life coach for parents of LGBTQ+ kids. I first discovered Dr. Lulu when she shared a powerful LinkedIn post during Black History Month entitled, "10 things the #BlackTrans Child wants you to know.”  https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7034233960419237889?updateEntityUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afs_feedUpdate%3A%28V2%2Curn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7034233960419237889%29 During this episode, we discuss the connection between legislation targeting transgender children and the dangers it poses to the future of work. We'll also explore ways allies, and those on their way to joining them, can help stop this legislation from being enshrined into law.   A few key highlights from this conversation include:   Exploring how Dr. Lulu's background as a pediatrician and mother of a transgender children shapes why her business focuses on supporting parents of LGBTQ+ young people.   Discussing the onslaught of anti-transgender legislation predominantly targeting transgender children, and its impacts on the future of work.   Considering the role employers could play in denouncing anti-transgender legislation, by making a real commitment to attract, retain, and advance transgender and nonbinary talent.   Naming the actions workplaces can actively take to build more safety, trust, and belonging for their current (and future) transgender and nonbinary employees.   Underscoring the importance of everyday actions allies, and budding allies, can take to show up for the transgender and nonbinary people in their lives.   Sharing resources that will empower you to successfully show up for the transgender and nonbinary people in your life.   Savor this insightful talk, and if you're looking for ways to connect with inspiring leaders like Dr. Lulu, be sure to join the Belonging Membership Community – a community of leaders committed to advancing their DEI goals while practicing community care. Every March 31, Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) is celebrated around the world. It is an annual occasion in which the achievements and contributions of the transgender community to society and the world at large are honored. For this year's TDOV, we're celebrating by spotlighting perspectives, experiences, and thought leadership of Global South transgender, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary immigrants and asylum refugees with a panel discussion plus a network power hour at The Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco! This event is presented by The Center for Immigrant Protection-ParivarBayArea, The LGBT Asylum Project and The Alwan Foundation in partnership with El/La Para Trans Latinas and The Office of Transgender Initiatives. With the onslaught of legislative attacks across the country against the transgender community, how do we reconcile the urgent need to protect and safeguard transgender immigrants and refugees during a period of heightened anti-trans hate? How can the United States protect transgender immigrants and refugees of the Global South when it fails to protect transgender Americans? How can we learn from the experiences of Global South transgender immigrants to better understand the importance of protecting the transgender community at-large?   Moderator Michelle Meow has been a radio personality in San Francisco and four other markets nationally for more than seven years, where she continues to be a voice for the LGBTQ community. Meow is a true journalist with an edgy vibe (think hip and funny Lesbian version of Anderson Cooper, minus the gray hair). He focuses mostly on the aftermath, including Rightwing hysteria over the shooter's reported transgender identity, the student protests on Monday, the ousting of state representatives who joined the protestors, and the general failure to focus in any way on gun reform. In the back half of the show, he provides a taxonomy for the over 600 pieces of legislation currently under discussion in 46 states targeting LGBTQ rights. He then reviews the impacts these discussions are having on public opinion about queer and trans folks.

International Transgender Day of Visibility (often referred to as TDOV or Trans Day of Visibility) is an annual event dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide, as well as a celebration of their contributions to society. The event began in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of LGBTQ+ recognition of transgender people, citing the frustration that the only well-known transgender-centered day was the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which mourned the murders of transgender people but did not acknowledge and celebrate living members of the transgender community. The first International Transgender Day of Visibility was held on March 31, 2009. ______________________________________ Resources: // The Trevor Project: If you are thinking about harming yourself — get immediate support. This Friday, March 31st, is Trans Day of Visibility, and we quite literally can't think of a better way to celebrate than with the author of the upcoming book "Begin Transmission: The trans allegories of The Matrix!" When screenwriter Tilly Bridges first saw The Matrix back in 1999, it spoke to her on an incredibly deep level that she couldn't fully understand until about fifteen years later, when she realized that - like the Wachowski Sisters themselves - she was trans. Tilly decided to revisit and analyze the movie that had started it all, and what began as a simple thread about The Matrix's trans allegories eventually became a timestamped handbook to the entire series! As Matrix fans, we absolutely GEEKED OUT over this conversation, and we know that you will, too! Many parents struggle to understand ways to support their their transgender teenager, especially if they think that it's just a phase of gender exploration, or a mild form of gender dysphoria that will eventually resolve. A parent may further struggle on how to care for their trans youth if they belong to a non-affirming religious community, which may exclude their teen from participating in spiritual ceremonies (e.g. communion, confirmation, mitzvahs) and gender-based ministries. Sadly, some of these religious communities may further harm trans youth with transphobic teachings and political agendas aimed to hurt the LGBT community. All of this can lead trans youth to feel unaccepted, unloved, and less likely to continue in their faith journey. In this week's podcast, we chat with Andrew Maxwell Triska, MSW, LCSW (https://www.andrewtriska.com/) about ways for parents to support and affirm their trans teen at home, school, and church. Andrew is a psychotherapist, educator, and author who works with trans and queer youth and adults. Triska also trains and consults on gender identity and sexuality for organizations, corporations, and schools. He is proud to be a trans-identified therapist and his fantastic new book "Parenting Your Transgender Teen: Positive Parenting Strategies for Raising Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender Nonconforming Teens (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1638788839/)" is designed to help parents actively support and affirm their trans youth along the journey.
