Modern medical advances often solve one ethical dilemma while creating new ones. The question isn't just whether we can implement cutting-edge technologies, but whether we should—and what considerations must guide these momentous decisions.Consider Japan's promising artificial blood trials, a direct response to their dramatically aging population and declining birth rates. With younger generations shrinking and fewer blood donors available, this innovation could extend blood shelf-life from weeks to years. Yet at $5,000-$9,000 per unit compared to $215 for donated blood, such solutions highlight healthcare disparities between wealthy and developing nations where blood supplies may only reach 40% of needed amounts.Meanwhile, the average age of American mothers has risen to 27.5 years—reflecting a societal shift toward delayed parenthood. This seemingly innocuous trend carries sobering consequences: maternal mortality rates quadruple after age 40, infant mortality increases by 50%, and severe health complications rise significantly. Beyond statistics lie family dynamics as well—when parents have children later, grandparents may lack the energy to provide much-needed childcare support, creating cascading effects across generations.Perhaps most disturbing is Philip Nitschke's latest proposal—an implantable chip allowing early-stage dementia patients to end their lives before cognitive decline progresses. This device would require daily deactivation, raising profound questions about autonomy, memory, and what constitutes informed consent when someone's mental capacity fluctuates. Is forgetting you once wanted to die a problem requiring technological intervention, or a blessing that allows continued experiencing of life? These technological developments reflect deeper societal values. Whether discussing artificial blood, delayed parenthood, or end-of-life technology, we face fundamental questions about how we value human life at various stages and conditions. Join us as we navigate these challenging ethical intersections with compassion, critical thinking, and consideration of both scientific evidence and spiritual values.SHOW NOTES:Assisted Suicide Implant for Dementia Patients: https://tinyurl.com/22dcf5u2 accessed 6-7-25Trials for Artificial Blood: https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/japan-to-begin-clinical-trials-for-artificial-blood-this-year/Average Age of U.S. Moms Giving Birth Rises: https://tinyurl.com/23fxth87 accessed 6-16-25Find strength and courage in your faith at this year's FEARLESS FAITH Conference. The average first home buyer is getting older. A Cotality-Westpac report has found the average age of first home buyers has increased to 36 nationwide. It's 37 in Auckland, 36 in Wellington, and 35 in Christchurch – all figures are two or three years higher than average in 2019. Cotality Chief Property Economist Kelvin Davidson told Mike Hosking there's a range of reasons behind it. He says the affordability measures aren't much different than they were in 2019, so while affordability is an influence, lifestyle and career choices are definitely having an impact. Shoot us a Text.As we enter a new week, we're considering how the average age of cars is affecting parts and service. Plus Colorado is now the most EV state in the US, topping California, and a new study is showing that bad customer service is costing retail stores billions.Show Notes with links:Despite a record number of aging vehicles on the road, the auto repair and parts industry is facing challenges as economic pressures affect consumer spending habits. The average passenger car is now 13.6 years old, up from 8.4 years three decades ago, creating a high demand for maintenance.Inflation, higher interest rates, and supply chain issues have led consumers to defer maintenance or opt for cheaper, off-brand parts.Companies like Monro, Genuine Parts, and Valvoline have reported significant drops in sales, citing cautious consumer spending.Carfax data shows 30% of vehicles are overdue for tire rotations, while 19% are late for oil changes, despite the high return on maintenance investment.Executives from AutoZone and O'Reilly Automotive predict a bounce-back as deferred repairs eventually become unavoidable.Colorado has dethroned California, emerging as the nation's leader in EV sales, with a stunning 25.3% of new vehicle sales being electric in Q3 of 2024. Here's what's driving the surge:Residents enjoy up to $12,500 in combined state and federal EV tax credits.Over 5,500 public charging ports are operational, with $5M allocated for 576 additional ports in 2024.82% of EVs sold in the state are fully electric, signaling robust consumer demand.Governor Jared Polis champions EVs as key to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, urging residents to act before state tax credits decrease in 2025 from $5000 to $3500.Will Toor, Colorado Energy Office Director, states, “Our commitment to making electric vehicles affordable and reliable is paying off.”Retailers are losing an estimated $262 billion annually due to inadequate in-store experiences, according to a study by Forsta.Nearly half of negative customer reviews are tied to issues like mismanaged checkouts and unhelpful staff, leading to frustration and lost sales. The study revealed that 74% of US adults will abandon a store without making a purchase after a bad experience. While online sales on Black Friday saw a 14.6% increase, in-store sales grew just 0.7%, with foot traffic dropping by 3.2%.Forsta CEO Kyle Ferguson emphasized the importance of in-store experiences, stating that poor service erodes trust and loyalty. He pointed to Walmart's use of AI-powered tools to improve customer interactions as a model for others to follow, urging retailers to prioritize in-store environments during peak retail periods.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

00:00 - OPEN - Why Your Next Used Car Should Be a Cockroach: AKA - A SurvivorIf you are looking for a bargain-priced used vehicle, stick around because in today's episode I'll tell you why you need to consider buying a cockroach for your next used car or truck. 01:00 - INTRO - Cockroaches - Are They Cool or Gross? My first experience with Madagascar cockroaches in a college biology class was positive (and entertaining), but not everyone likes these creepy little crittersLINK: Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches As Pets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WHYIBSyEe8LINK: Madagascar Cockroach Eating Contest for Six Flags, New England: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Fvlll4Lnq003:50 - The Cockroach Deserves Our RespectCockroaches have survived a long time - they were here about 300 million years before humans and 150 million years before the dinosaurs. They even survived the comet that killed the dinosaurs and about 80% of all life on earth. Plus their survival capabilities and skills allow them to survive drowning, famine, poison and even massive doses of radiation that would kill a human. 06:15 - Nature's Ultimate SurvivorThe cockroach is nature's ultimate survivor. Therefore a cockroach used car or truck is an ultimate survivor from an automotive standpoint. These are cars and trucks that have survived in excellent condition in spite of being older than most vehicles. Common Attributes of a Cockroach Used CarUsually only one ownerPerfect maintenanceStored indoorsDriven regularlyLow milesNo accidentsNo rustEverything works08:25 - How Do You Find A Cockroach Car? I recommend using the Serendipity Search method that I covered in episodes 64 and 1909:42 - Eight Excellent, Low-Priced Cockroach Used Vehicles I Recently Found2004 Nissan Sentra - $4,9002001 Nissan Maxima GLE - $6,0001991 Mitsubishi Mighty Max 2WD Pickup - $19001998 Nissan Frontier 2WD Pickup - $4,3002000 Ford Ranger 2WD Pickup - $4,5001988 Nissan Hardbody 2WD Extended Cab Pickup - $4,8001998 Jeep Wrangler TJ - $7,0001998 Nissan Pathfinder SE - $7,60018:15 - Not So Average Used CarsAverage Price: $5,125Average Mileage: 113,000 Average Age: 26 (1997 model year) Be sure to get a prepurchase inspection if you can, but depending on the owner, if the used vehicle they are selling is really inexpensive, they may tell you that you're welcome to have it inspected if it's still for sale in a few days, but until then the first person who pays their price gets it. Bonus Cockroach Vehicle Example: 1987 Toyota Celica GT-S - one owner, 122,000 miles, Perfect Condition for $3,800! This was my favorite. 22:35 - CLOSEIf you can set your ego aside, open yourself up to the possibilities and focus on letting serendipity find you a fantastic cockroach ca or truck (aka - a survivor) that may be a couple decades old, but still looks and runs like a 3-5 year old used car, then this cockroach car search idea just might be the perfect way for you to find your next really affordable used vehicle.
