TextaQueen invites community to the TheySwarm Open Day today Thursday 23 October, 12-3pm in-person or 1-3pm online at 152 Johnston Street Collingwood. The upcoming covid-cautious event series involves reading, writing and riffing sessions withTheySwarm's rad BIPOC library hosted by Trans Queer and Gender Diverse and disabled creatives.// 3CR Exclusive! Peter Cronau, esteemed investigative journalist and editor of Declassified Australia, joined Inez to discuss the shocking discovery that 69 shipments of F-35 fighter jet parts, likely many more, have been flown on commercial passenger planes to Israel from Australia as recently as last week. In part 1 of the conversation, aired last week on Thursday Breakfast, Peter discussed how this routine operation is carried out in secret. Today in part 2, we learn more about the freedom of information request, department of defense's defensive reply, and what is next for the Willamtown base as the main F35 base for the asia-pacific region. Lockheed Martin's F-35 Fighter Jets have been described as their most lethal, stealth fighter jet, playing a critical role in the genocide in Gaza, Palestine as well as other global atrocities. This comes after years of denial by the department of defence, parliament members and the Prime Minister that ''Australia does not supply weapons or parts of weapons to Israel – and hasn't done so for more than 5 years.'' Declassified Australia is uncovering Australia's secret global impact - from whistleblowers to declassified documents, weapons exports to Pine Gap, espionage to state surveillance.// We listened to a clip of Ex-Thursday Breakfast programmer and member of the Homeless Persons Union of Victoria, Spike, speaking outside the Melbourne Town Hall on Tuesday 21 Oct 2025 at the HPUV speakout against the council's criminalisation of homelessness and policing of public space. We also played lived-experience accounts of homeless community members' interactions with CrownLand Security, the private security firm that has been recently employed and deployed by Melbourne City Council in a $2M initiative which marginalises and criminalises those experiencing homelessness on the streets of the CBD. These testimonies were recorded by Spike and Kelly and presented to Melbourne City Councillors during the council meeting on Tuesday 21 October in a bid to get private security of Melbourne's streets. The council will make a decision on the draft security plan on Tuesday 28 October, and community members are asked to turn up in solidarity from 4:30PM - for updates follow @homelesspersonsunionvic on Instagram.// Acclaimed author Tony Birch was back in the studio to give us the long view on urban renewal and the fight for public housing in Naarm/Melbourne. Some of Birch's most memorable short fiction features the impacts of slum reclamation in inner city Melbourne in the mid-20th century, part of the process of establishing the city's now iconic high rise public housing estates. With the flats under threat by a state government plan for their total demolition and redevelopment, organisers and community groups have called a public meeting tonight from 6-8PM at the Capitol Theatre in Melbourne's CBD to sound the alarm. Tony Birch is an activist, historian and essayist, and is currently the Boisbouvier Chair in Australian Literature at the University of Melbourne.// Councillor Sophie Wade, representing Collingwood, joined to discuss the devastating cuts announced last week to cohealth services. cohealth announced two big changes that will impact community members in Collingwood, Fitzroy and Kensington: the closure of cohealth Collingwood in June 2026 next year, and the end of GP services at all sites. cohealth services some of our most marginalised community members. The lack of bulk-billing services and cuts to hospitals and health services in the area will leave almost 12,000 people to deal with the consequences. This comes after years of underfunding and cuts to cohealth services. Community members are asked to show up for an Emergency Town Hall meeting at Fitzroy Town Hall at tomorrow, Friday 24 October, at 4PM.//

The debate over the inclusion of gender diverse people in sport has become the latest battleground in the fight for basic human rights and equality. Trans and nonbinary people around the world are facing physical harm and violence—including death—at unprecedented rates. In Let Us Play: Winning the Battle for Gender Diverse Athletes (Beacon Press, 2025), trans athlete Harrison Browne and investigative journalist Rachel Browne reveal how the opposition towards gender diverse athletes is fueled by fear and a moral panic as opposed to facts around what makes “a level playing field.” Interweaving Harrison's firsthand experience as a transgender athlete with exclusive accounts—from athletes, coaches, policymakers, and advocates on the front lines—Let Us Play dismantles the illusion that sports have ever been fair, that trans athletes pose a threat to women's sports, and that gender-affirming healthcare for athletes should be prohibitive to play. Calling for a reframing of the binaries from youth and high school levels all the way to the national leagues, Browne and Browne offer a new path forward, led by solutions proposed by gender diverse athletes themselves. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In this episode we feature 2 articles that explore hot topics in genetics as well as opportunities to improve patient care in honor of DNA Day on April 25. DNA day commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project and the discovery of DNA's double helix. Both of these studies utilize qualitative methodologies to highlight people's experiences and share their stories. Segment 1: Not Parent Expected” results through direct-to-consumer genetic testing Julia Becker (she/her) is a board-certified genetic counselor and CSU Stanislaus Genetic Counseling Program graduate. She has a strong interest in the ethical, psychological, and social implications of genetic testing, particularly in the context of unexpected parentage discoveries. Julia is the first author of the article, "Experiences of Individuals Receiving ‘Not Parent Expected' Results Through Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing," published in the Journal of Genetic Counseling. She presented this research at the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) Annual Conference in 2021, contributing to the ongoing dialogue on the impact of unexpected genetic findings. Her work focuses on supporting individuals navigating complex genetic discoveries and advancing awareness within the genetic counseling community. In this segment we discuss: - The rise in Not Parent Expected (NPE) discoveries through direct-to-consumer genetic testing and what it means to receive this result. - Key emotional themes from interviews with 25 participants, including identity disruption, grief without death, and shifting family dynamics. - How a background in genetic counseling informed a sensitive and in-depth interview approach. - The emotional motivations behind seeking out biological relatives and the varied outcomes of those efforts. - The need for improved informed consent and follow-up care from DTC companies.   Segment 2: Transgender and gender diverse patients' experiences with pregnancy-related genetics discussions: A qualitative study Jaime Schechner (she/her) works as a neurology genetic counselor at Boston Children's Hospital. She completed her Master of Science in Genetic Counseling at Boston University, and previously worked as a genetic counseling assistant at Beth Israel's Maternal Fetal Medicine Center. Darius  Haghighat (he/him) is a reproductive genetic counselor at Boston Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. He has prior experience as a cancer genetic counselor as well. He completed his Master's in Genetic Counseling at Boston University. As a queer genetic counselor he is especially passionate about LGBTQIA+ health equity. In this segment we discuss: - The inspiration behind focusing the study on pregnancy-related genetic counseling experiences among trans and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. - Major gaps in reproductive healthcare for TGD patients, including misgendering, binary language, and lack of provider knowledge. - Participant stories about feeling unseen or misgendered, and discussed the emotional impact of these encounters. - Frustrations with terms like "maternal" and "advanced maternal age," and suggested inclusive alternatives for clinical language. - Moments of affirming care, showing how small gestures can have a powerful impact across the healthcare journey. - The need for systemic change, including inclusive policies, provider education, and future research that centers TGD voices.
