We're talking today with special guest, Davy Liu. Carl spent time interviewing Davy at the KidzMatter Conference. Davy and his family immigrated from Taiwan to the U.S. when he was 13 years old. He found solace in the arts and graduated from Ringling School of Arts and Design in Florida. After that, he became an animator for the Walt Disney Company, recruited by them in 1988. He worked on classic films like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Mulan, and The Lion King. During this interview, Davy shares insights on why the Church should create custom media and the importance of quality in media production and good storytelling. He explains that churches struggle to prioritize quality visuals - they rely too much on preaching instead of storytelling through visuals like Jesus did with parables. He also reminds listeners that investing in high-quality visuals is crucial because people learn best visually. And a well thought out visual story, is much more memorable, than a plain sermon. However, he ultimately lamented that churches often settle for volunteer-level quality due to budget constraints. Paying for skill, however shows in the end product. Finally, Davy describes his work since leaving Disney in 2000, creating illustrated books and developing an animated Bible film with former Disney directors. So join us as we find out what a former Disney animator thinks about quality custom visuals for churches. Episode 2 In this episode, we are continuing with a foundation of what we are building. Last time we looked at how the Bible visually communicates the Gospel. This time, we are going to journey through time from Biblical History to Church History. We're going to look at some of the most influential super creative people throughout the history of the Church. Long before the culture we live in today of motion loops, mini-movies and graphics, the Early Church for 2000 years has been telling the story of Jesus in creative ways. We have the greatest story to ever be told. Jesus is the Way. How can we learn from the history of Creativity in the Church to creatively and visually communicate the Gospel?
