Interview by Kris PetersIt's hard to believe that after 13 years Brisbane two-piece Environmental Nu Thrash outfit F.U.C (or, as they are known in the Andes, Forests Under Construction) are finally set to bust their cherry at Wallapalooza 2023.After hosting some of the finest bands this country has to offer from humble beginnings at the Wallaby Hotel in Mudgeeraba, festival organisers have somehow - some would argue inexplicably - failed to invite the Sunshine State's finest mankini clad musicians to their annual party. It is a glaring omission that is finally set to be rectified on November 4 when F.U.C rightfully take their place on the main stage of Wallapalooza with the promise of nothing more than actually showing up.F.U.C themselves have been around for longer than the festival has - another nail in the coffin for deprived locals - and have vowed that 2023 will be the year Walla fans are called forth to pay for the sins of their forefathers by way of musical disciplinary action that may or may not involve two hot and sweaty musicians watching as their stage sweat spills from their brows into the depths of your… schooners of beer.To add spice to the mix F.U.C have recently unleashed their new EP Everythink, just in time to be road tested at Wallapalooza. A swirling mass of punk, metal, rock, thrash and love potions sure to tame even the meekest of beasts, Everythink sees F.U.C at their unrestrained best with tracks like Dick Massage, Snap Off A Log and VIPness only hinting at the inner passion just waiting to be released from their sweaty outside undergarments. If you have not yet become acquainted with F.U.C we strongly recommend that you mark their set time down into your Walla diary first and foremost, because these guys are sure to produce one of the standout performances of the day.And don't just take our word for it, because drummer Toddy and guitarist Dan graciously gave up their time to talk with HEAVY, if only so they could tell us so themselves."We've got a massive gig coming up for Wallapalooza on November 4," Todd began, stating the obvious. "It's gonna be awesome, and we're very excited."Despite only being added to a line-up that includes COG, Butterfingers, 28 Days and more at the eleventh hour, both boys feel strongly that their name should have been read out atop of the list back when the first artist drop was revealed."Everyone loves a bit of F.U.C," Todd shrugged. "Penises… animals… This will be our first time doing Wallapalooza. I think it's in its 13th year, and we're very excited for it because it's always been a pretty cool event from the outside looking in."Sitting amongst a wealth of big names at the head of the poster, F.U.C surely have something special to offer punters?"We'll slip in somewhere, I'm sure," Todd laughed. "I'm sure it will be a hot, sweaty day so there will be plenty of lube and we'll just slide on in somewhere in between all of them and prime the audience I suppose."Todd turns the question to Dan, asking "what do you reckon?" to which Dan replies "I don't know." Todd's ensuing quip of "you don't know?" followed by a healthy dose of laughter pretty much epitomises one of the main strengths of F.U.C.The chemistry between the two scantily clad bandmates, which only intensifies as the interview continues. In the full chat, Todd and Dan give us a bit of history on F.U.C, their penchant for mankini's and why, the EP Everthink and why it took so long to see light, the musical nature of their music and where it comes from, a track by track analysis on the six songs that make up Everythink, what punters can expect from their set and more.
Interview by Kris PetersWhat better way to celebrate your 13th birthday than to return to your spiritual home; the place where it all began?Which is exactly what Wallapalooza are doing this year when the festival returns to its birthplace at The Wallaby Hotel on November 4 for a music extravaganza unlike any seen on the local circuit for some time.Spearheaded by COG, Wallapalooza 2023 also features 28 Days, Butterfingers, Anty!, F.U.C, Dreamkillers, Azreal, PistonFist, Kaosphere, Snake Mountain and plenty more in what promises to be an Australian festival for music lovers of all tastes. After slaying last year's event, 28 Days return to up their game even more this year, with bass player Damo joining HEAVY to discuss more."We haven't played with COG for probably fifteen years I reckon," he began, "so it will be good to catch up with those guys again. We always used to play freezer gigs with them - like all ages things back in the day - so, yeah, it will be awesome."Last year's event was held at the nearby Mudgeeraba Showgrounds, which gave the show an outdoors feel and was a huge success, so we hit Damo up to see how he feels about returning to more of a pub feel for 2023."Last year was cool, it was huge," he smiled, "and it probably would have been too much of a task to pull it off every year. We actually stayed at The Wallaby Hotel last year (laughs) and they kind of walked us through the layout of when it was always there, so it will be cool. It will be ace to get there and play. We like those kind of 'little' festivals. The 2000 type people ones. They just seem more intimate, but still with enough of a crowd to make it really hyper."In the full interview, Damo talks more about the benefits of having 100% Australian band festivals, what we can expect from 28 Days, the early days of the band and the musical climate that created them, hitting commercial success with Upstyledown and why he thinks people connected with that album, the possibility of new music from 28 Days and more.

While Uncaged Festival officially kicks off this weekend, the show itself has taken far longer to bring from idea to reality. In a musical climate where many promotors were having to be selective about which shows to put on, Silverback Touring, and particularly the man behind it all Danny Bazzi, was thinking more about the future and the possibilities it may bring. It was a brave move, especially considering the tours that Silverback had been forced to cancel or postpone, but one which has ultimately seen the emergence of what should become Australia's latest and greatest annual music festival, Uncaged.HEAVY tracked Danny down earlier this week to talk about Uncaged and the long journey which has seen it brought to life."It's definitely been a rollercoaster of joy, frustration and numerous emotions,” he offered, “but it's finally here. We've had to, I guess, navigate our way through. When we initially announced it we were navigating around venue restrictions and capacity, which is why we went outdoor into larger spaces initially. It's always been intended as being a relatively modest festival. It's only got a capacity of 5000 and we've never gone over that. The sole reason we went to some of those bigger spaces initially was based on COVID restrictions, so we needed a 20,000 cap space to accommodate 5000 people on one person per four square meters at the time. How times have changed. Here we are, we're at the finish line in some respects, but in saying that we're also at the start because this is the start of something we're looking to grow."While the average punter gets all of the excitement surrounding that one day of live music, behind the scenes the time taken to put together and execute a festival of this magnitude is immeasurable."A lot,” Bazzi laughed when asked how much time went into Uncaged. “To put it in context, it's basically absorbed my life for the last six months or so. It's a rollercoaster of emotions. There's some real excitement around it, everything from coming up with the branding, to the concept, what you're trying to put out, and then finding the talent and putting it on sale, dealing with punters and feedback - everyone's got an opinion these days - it's just a huge process but one which can't be executed without having a solid team. And the team I've got actually running the festival are some of the best in the business so that gives me a lot of comfort in terms of delivery of the festival. There are so many facets to it, and I won't deny that it's been a learning curve in many ways. I've got the greatest of respect for my peers and promoters who are putting on festivals. (But) You have to take the bull by the horns at some point and dive into the deep end, and I think we've done that. There will certainly be a few lessons learnt, but I think we've got a really good foundation for a new rock festival in Australia."In the full interview, Danny tells us more about himself and his role with Silverback Touring, why he decided to start a new festival in trying times, the selection process for bands, giving emerging bands the opportunity to play all three shows, the future of Uncaged and if international bands will be part of the festival moving forward, surviving COVID as a promotor, other tours coming up and more.
Since bursting onto the scene with their 2009 self-titled debut EP, Gold Coast metal machine Azreal have been one of those bands whose reputation deservedly precedes them at every turn.Through countless shows on their home turf through to an international tour supporting the mighty Devildriver, Azreal have always maintained their sense of adventure and musical aggression, most notably with their astonishing ru of seven appearances at the Gold Coast's premiere music festival Wallapalooza. On the cusp of yet another appearance, HEAVY sat down with the entire band – vocalist Luke Hosking, drummer Chris Dennis, guitarist Jimmy Glinster and bass player Scott Campbell to see how they are feeling about playing at what will be the biggest Wallapalooza yet.Although not being on the initial line-up for the rescheduled event, Glinster is quick to point out Azreal is deservedly on the updated bill."Technically, we were on the line-up when it was due last September,” he corrected, “and then it got pushed back to November and we couldn't do it because of Chris' bucks party. As it turns out a couple of bands that were booked in dropped out, so..."This year Wallapalooza moves from its usual home at the Wallaby Hotel to the larger confines of the Mudgeeraba showgrounds, a move the band agrees was inevitable and also warranted."It's a well organised festival,” Hosking shrugged. “It always has a good turnout, it's always cranking, it's always got good local bands and it's a good fun scene. Everyone has a wicked time so they come back. There's never been a Walla that hasn't smashed it. Not that we've been at anyway.""Having done seven you can progressively see each year getting bigger and better and obviously this year bigger again," added Campbell. In the full interview the band chats about their time slot, the local bands on the bill, playing with some of the biggest names in Australian music, what the band has been doing in the five years since their last single Beast, possible new music, the Gold Coast metal scene and more.
If Brisbane had a throne for the Kings Of Metal, then Brisbane outfit Massic would be sitting atop that velvet chair as we speak.Blending groove, sludge and hardcore metal into a chaotic brand bearing their own signature, Massic play each show like their life depends on it – literally – and since their debut album Redshift in 2018 have taken nothing for granted. After overcoming serious well documented health issues suffered by their frontman Simon Russell-White, Massic last year released “Assimilate”, a driving slab of metal meatiness that served as a teaser for the band's follow up album. The release last month of “Surrender” dangled the carrot just that bit further, with the accompanying announcement of the band's next album tempered only by the sorrow at not having a chance to see Massic perform live on stage for far too long. All of that changes next weekend when Massic take to the stage as part of Wallapalooza 2022, featuring Grinspoon, The Butterfly Effect, 28 Days, British India, The Poor, Cosmic Psychos and more.Massic are just one of a wealth of local talent asked to perform at the festival, with Azreal, Awake In Time, Smoking Martha, Goatzilla and more also getting the chance to share the stage with some of this countries bigger names.Simon joined HEAVY for a chat about Wallapalooza earlier this week."Me and the boys have a bit of a thing,” he laughed. “It's not gonna be real until we're all standing on stage together and about to hit that first song, so we'll see. Nah, we're keen as man, it's gonna be great. I really feel that being in a band can be frustrating, but hats off to all the organisers of any festival. Andy and Erin and everyone else involved with Walla, it takes serious balls to continue a festival like this."Aside from Among The Ruined and Azreal, Massic are flying the metal flag for the event, with Simon admitting the band were looking forward to the honour."I think originally we were the only heavy metal band, so it's kind of cool to have Among The Ruined and our brothers in Azreal there,” he smiled. “I think it's awesome being one of the only metal bands. Apart from the crazy, cool line-up, I think it's gonna be sweet t get some metal in there. It's really cool to have been asked as being one of the lesser genres."In the full interview, Simon talks more about the new single, the upcoming album, what to expect musically, more clean singing on this one, his new side project and more.
