Oral Arguments for the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Bazzi v. JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A.
This week on CounterSpin: On September 17, thousands of handheld pagers exploded simultaneously across Lebanon and Syria. The next day, it was hundreds of walkie-talkies — part of an Israeli attack, intended for Hezbollah, that Israel's defense minister called “the start of a new phase in the war.” Media dutifully reported the emerging toll of dead and wounded, including many civilians, including children. Harder to capture is the life-altering impact of such a terror attack on those it doesn't kill. As every day brings news of new carnage, U.S. citizens have a duty not to look away, given our government's critical role in arming Israel and ignoring its crimes, and in misleading us about what they know and intend. Mohamad Bazzi is director of the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies, a journalism professor at New York University, and former Middle East bureau chief at Newsday. He joins us to talk about the latest events and media response. Plus, Janine Jackson takes a quick look at recent press coverage of Rashida Tlaib, banned books, and deportation. (New York Post)A New York Home Depot has deployed a guard dog — and other stores may be close behind — to protect shoppers from aggressive migrants and thieves flooding their parking lots, The Post has learned. Two men wearing MSA Security caps and bulletproof vests with a German Shepherd in tow patrolled the Home Depot in New Rochelle on Tuesday... The guarded New Rochelle lot was quiet and no migrants loitered there when The Post visited this week, however, seven miles away in Throggs Neck, The Bronx, at least 30 male migrants hovered at the doors of Home Depot. Some were day laborers simply trying to “shape” for work with local contractors. But many others aggressively confronted shoppers, trying to sell them phony Apple Airpods or soliciting tips for lifting items from shopping carts into cars — even when uninvited. “You come out and you're a woman by yourself, they literally leech onto your wagon, and you're like ‘No, I don't need any help,'” one worker said. “And when they're following you to your car, it's unnerving.” She said a female supervisor saw one of the men washing his privates with a water bottle in the lot, and that several women have called customer service to complain that migrants robbed them of purses or phones. She's seen the number of grifters in the lot swell as the migrant population in New York City explodes. “I came to work one day and there had to be 100 guys out here,” she said. “And I'm like, ‘Oh, my God!...'” Customers frequently complain about the crush of migrants, said LaurieAnn Masciocco, who works in the store's customer service department. “It's come to the point where they're invading personal space, touching people's belongings, just harassing,” she said. (Los Angeles Times)Los Angeles officials — eager to ease the city's reliance on police officers for handling nonviolent mental health emergencies — have launched a new pilot program that sends unarmed civilians with training to respond to such calls.Modeled after a heralded program out of Oregon, city officials said the so-called Unarmed Model of Crisis Response has two teams of mental health practitioners available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for situations that would typically fall to police, such as conducting welfare checks and responding to calls for public intoxication and indecent exposure. The program, run by the office of the city administrator, is so far operating in three police divisions... with plans to evaluate its performance after a year and potentially expand... The program is based on the “Cahoots” model, named for a Eugene, Ore., nonprofit widely considered the gold standard in mobile crisis intervention. The program, started in 1989, today handles about 20% of the mental health calls for the city of around 180,000 by dispatching teams of specialists trained in counseling and de-escalation... In New York, officials cited staffing and training issues as reasons why a Cahoots-style pilot fell short of its goal of rerouting at least 50% of mental health calls away from police. Read more. It's Friday, April 12th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Former Muslim unable to provide for her children Halima and her three children are part of a group of Somali Christians in Mombasa, Kenya who face persecution, reports International Christian Concern. After Halima left her Muslim faith to follow Christ in 2012, she kept her faith secret for five years. Following her baptism in 2017, her Muslim husband Osman and other family members discovered that she had left Islam. Osman divorced Halima, forcing her to relocate to another part of Mombasa. Despite living discreetly, Halima's Christian activities were uncovered. In May 2023, their home was targeted twice by Muslim assailants, though they were unsuccessful. They accused Halima of leading Muslims astray and labeled her a “Christian crusader.” The combination of unemployment and ongoing harassment left Halima struggling to provide for her children. Consequently, they were forced to drop out of school earlier this year due to unpaid fees. When International Christian Concern learned about Halima's case in October 2023, they provided the funds to send her children back to school. Halima said, “My children had no hope of continuing with school for this year. I kept trusting God, and He surely came through for me.” She asks that you pray that more Somali Muslims come to faith in Christ. In John 3:3, Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." In addition to praying for their conversion, you can provide funds to help other persecuted Christians like Halima through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Muslim Americans chant “Death to America” in Dearborn, Michigan A video of an anti-Israel activist in Dearborn, Michigan prompted Muslims to chant "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" in their Arabic language. MUSLIM CROWD: “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” (in Arabic) Last Friday, Tarek Bazzi, who is associated with the Hadi Institute, gave a speech at an International Al-Quds Day rally, an annual pro-Palestinian event held on the last Friday of Ramadan. BAZZI: “Malcolm X said, and I quote, ‘We live in one of the rottenness countries that has ever existed on this earth.' It's not Genocide Joe that has to go. It's the entire system that has to go. Any system that would allow such atrocities and such devilry to happen, and would support it, such a system does not deserve to exist on God's Earth.” As it turns out, Bazzi has a history of espousing violent rhetoric, reports Fox News. Back in 2021, Bazzi can be heard using violent rhetoric towards Israel and Jewish people while speaking to a group of protesters. He said, "Understand what these slogans mean. 'From the river to the sea' means the absolute annihilation of the Zionist regime. It is absolute evil. It is a cancer in the Middle East and in the world. There is no way to deal peacefully with such an entity.” Muslim Congresswoman vs. White House on anti-American chanters Listen to the encounter that Fox News reporter Hillary Vaughn had with Democratic Muslim Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib of Michigan when she asked for the Congresswoman's reaction to the “Death to America” chant in her district. VAUGHN: “Congresswoman Tlaib?” TLAIB: “I don't talk to Fox News. I don't talk to Fox News” VAUGHN: “At a rally in your district, people were chanting ‘Death to America.' Do you condemn …” TLAIB: “I do not talk to Fox News.” VAUGHN: “But do you condemn chants of ‘Death to America'?” TLAIB: “I don't talk to people that use racist tropes.” VAUGHN: “Why can't you just say whether or not you condemn people chanting death to America? Why are you afraid to talk to Fox?” TLAIB: “Fox News is not. Listen, using racist tropes towards my community is what Fox News is about. I don't talk to Fox News.” VAUGHN: “Is death to America racist? Is chanting ‘Death to America' racist?” TLAIB: “Talk about your guys's racist tropes.” By contrast, the White House condemned the “Death to America” chant in Dearborn, Michigan. Listen to Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House Press Secretary. JEAN-PIERRE: “We will condemn any, any violent rhetoric and we've been very consistent about denouncing that type of, that type of rhetoric. Any type of violent rhetoric, we are going to denounce.” O.J. Simpson died O.J. Simpson, the former football great who was accused of and ultimately acquitted of the brutal 1994 slayings of his ex-wife and her friend, has died, according to his family, reports ABC News. He was 76. On June 12, 1994, Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, were brutally stabbed to death outside of her home in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood. Within days, police announced their intention to arrest the former football star for the murders. Five days after the killings, 95 million Americans watched as Simpson's white Ford Bronco – with longtime friend Al Cowlings at the wheel and Simpson in the back seat with a handgun, threatening to kill himself – led police on a 60-mile, low-speed televised chase through Los Angeles that lasted two hours. Simpson ultimately surrendered to police and stood trial for the murders. In October 1995, after 11 months from jury selection to verdict, Simpson was acquitted. Though he was acquitted on the criminal charges, the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman filed a civil suit against Simpson. he was ordered to pay a total of $33.5 million in damages. Despite years of efforts, the families were only able to collect from Simpson a fraction of the damages the jury awarded. Two women injured by abortion in one day And finally, on Wednesday, April 10th, Abortion Free New Mexico volunteers documented two abortion-related injuries on the same day at the University of New Mexico Center For Reproductive Health abortion mill. This is the eighth abortion injury documented there since Abortion Free New Mexico launched the daily sidewalk prayer initiative, No Sidewalk Without The Savior in April 2022. The first abortion injury occurred at 2:30pm. A fire engine, police car, and two ambulances were photographed onsite and a woman was wheeled out of the abortion mill on a gurney and placed in an ambulance. Shockingly, the second abortion injury was documented just an hour and a half later at 4:00pm! Both women were taken to a local emergency room after having likely experienced a botched abortion injury. First and second trimester abortions are performed up to six months of pregnancy at this location. Tara Shaver with Abortion Free New Mexico, said, "Abortion at any stage of pregnancy is a brutally violent act. Precious unborn children pay the ultimate price with their lives. But many times, as documented twice [on Wednesday], women sustain life-threatening injuries because abortions are incredibly invasive and unnatural.” She added that pro-abortion advocates “do not care about women's health. They just demand unrestricted abortion regardless of the life threatening consequences." In Proverbs 6:17, we learn that one of the seven things that God hates are the “hands that shed innocent blood.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Friday, April 12th in the year of our Lord 2024. After the big explosion, Brandon saw this as a sign from God to look for a better path. Having to start from the bottom again, Brandon went on working various jobs. Day and night, he would work as a server at two different restaurants. Anywhere in between, Brandon did door-to-door sales for a real estate company. He quickly noticed how much the investors were making and had the "aha-moment" that investing was the only way out of the rat race. From then on, Brandon decided to learn everything he could on investing in real estate. He went into a rabbit hole, learning as much as he could from podcasts, youtube, all the books he could get his hands on, even seminars and saving as much as he can. In the process, Brandon sent out offers on a regular basis starting locally in San Diego but wasn't able to get any deals as he was competing with all cash buyers. Instead of giving up there, Brandon decided to broaden his horizon elsewhere... Within two years, in July 2015 Brandon purchased his first rental property in Ohio, then just months later a triplex. By May 2016, Brandon had 10 income producing properties that allowed him to quit his jobs... and the secret sauce that helped Brandon do so is inside CREDIT COUNSEL ELITE! Thanks to credit, Brandon had the capital to both purchase and remodel these properties. The reason why Brandon created Credit Counsel Elite is for you! Brandon witness first-hand what credit had did for his life. While real estate is the vehicle, credit is the tool that helped Brandon become financially free and create generational wealth while living the lifestyle he has always dreamed of- supporting his family, traveling the world, and giving back to the community! CREDIT COUNSEL ELITE is not another credit company, it is a FAMILY that believes in you and your dreams. In This Episode: Are taxes going up or down? Are those dollars in your pocket worth more today or the future? Would you rather pay tax on the seed or the harvest? These are the three questions that Jim asks people all the time, and the answers come so easily. Taxes are going up, of course, our dollars will be worth less in the future, and you would rather pay tax on the seed. Yet a traditional 401(k) or IRA violates all of these answers, and people are still putting their money there. Why? Because people still don't fully understand just how devastating inflation really is. The only way to keep up with inflation is to have actual assets – not instruments in Wall Street eroding every day – but assets. After 21 years in banking, that's exactly what this week's guest learned. Fouad Bazzi realized he could step away from the corporate grind and that investing would be a better option, and as a result has been running a short-term rental business for the last year. He sold every stock he ever had and began investing in the rental sector, and his business is thriving. He joins Jim this week to share his journey into short-term rentals, what drove him to do this, and how he runs his business differently from the norm. There is a reason that banks are the most profitable businesses in the world and it's because they control your money. But there is something the banks don't want you to know, and Fouad is sharing it with you this week. Jim and Fouad discuss the benefits of having assets, how Fouad broke away from the corporate sector, and the true power of real estate. Find out why people shouldn't be putting their money in Wall Street, the reasons more people don't invest in short-term rentals, and everything you need to consider if you are interested in breaking into the short-term rental space. - Connect with Jim Oliver: Facebook: CreateTailwind & Jim Oliver Website: https://createtailwind.com/ YouTube: CreateTailwind LinkedIn: Jim Oliver Join the Community: https://community.createtailwind.com/ RSVP for the next community Q&A HERE: https://community.createtailwind.com/events Connect with Fouad Bazzi: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fouad-bazzi-4415973 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fouadbazzi_airbnb/ Linktree: https://linktr.ee/foubnb Resources Mentioned: Rich Dad's CASHFLOW Quadrant: Rich Dad's Guide to Financial Freedom by Robert T. We had the pleasure of interviewing Rose Betts over Zoom video!Standout British singer/songwriter Rose Betts wears her heart on her sleeve in her triumphant debut full-length album, White Orchids, out now! Rose wrote and co-produced the entire album. To Rose, White Orchids represents a loss of innocence; a moment of pure youth and fragility where her heart was broken. Just as an orchid blooms once before it is usually discarded, it feels as though one can grasp on to youth for merely a fleeting moment. Rose released the emotional, self-reflective album single “Recovery” late last year, and it was recently synced for usage for the CW hit TV show "Legacies." Another album track, "Driving Myself Home," went supernova on Tiktok in January and is now closing in on 2 million combined streams and well over 5 million views. Rose also released “Song To The Siren” last year (producing the track as well as performing it), which served as the leading song of Zack Snyder's Justice League (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), created by GRAMMY-nominated multi-platinum producer, musician, composer and educator Tom Holkenborg. Olympic Silver Medalist Alexandra Trusova used “Song to the Siren” in her recent Olympic run. ABOUT ROSE BETTSHailing from London, England, Rose Betts is a singer-songwriter with an uncanny ability to pen beautiful hooks and lyrics with a depth beyond her years. A regular on the London music scene and darling of Sofar Sounds, Rose toured the UK in 2017 and self-released her first EP The Stars Look Down. She has received major radio play on BBC 2 and BBC 6 and continues to blur the lines of conventionality through her collaborations with art, film, theatre and virtual technology. She is also involved in other collaborative projects, working on Bazzi's single ‘Young and Alive' which was nominated for Best Remixed Recording at the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards and “Song to the Siren,” her contribution to the Zack Snyder's Justice League (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), which she performed and produced.
