A NEATO crossword from the pen of Peter A. Collins, rife with amusing clues (32A, "Squee!", IMSOEXCITED, 37D, Worn down apparel?, PARKAS (awesome!), and 20A, Part of a driver's manual, CLUTCH). There were a few clues that might make respectively, spelling-challenged and Anglophobes blanch -- 36A, Former name of Kazakhstan's largest city, ALMAATA, and 26A, Crown Jewels' quality, LUSTRE. The latter ties in nicely to Thursday's crossword, where the amazing Sam Ezersky challenged us with 48D, Strong luster, SATYR. All in all, a fine Saturday, we give it a 5 squares on the JAMCR scale.

Today we discuss the period of time when your little boy starts moving away from mum to dad and starts to think he doesn't need mum anymore. We tell about when our boys started separating from wanting mum all the time to wanting dad instead. It was a gradual process, but our boy, Ezra, got to a point where he stopped calling for mum and only called for daddy. Rosie explains how instead of reacting to Daithi when he did something wrong to try to get her attention, she asked him if he wanted to go play with cars and shared a sweet moment with him. We go over how boys these days are expected to be raised and how the view on boys and men has changed, and then what we're doing to help them grow into good men. When Ezra started calling for daddy instead of mummy 1:17Daithi's interactions 5:36A tender moment with Daithi 8:03Being Pro Men 19:46Teaching boys respect 21:36“What I was thinking of in that moment was 2 things. Even though this puzzle dealt with elements, it was not at all elementary, my dear Watson, and periodically it seemed like Moriarty himself had designed this fiendish crossword, rather than the actual constructor, Jack Murtaugh. The themed clues involved symbols for elements, cleverly hidden in the theme, so, for instance, 36A, Female?, turned out to be IRONMAN (Fe=IRON, male=MAN). 16A, Siding?, turned out to be Siliconchip (!), and 57A, Cold?, was CARBONDATING, YADA, YADA, YADA.

Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him. Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please, let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, and I will follow you.” Elijah answered, “Go back! Have I done anything to you?” Elisha left him and, taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them; he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh, and gave it to his people to eat. Then he left and followed Elijah as his attendant. PSALM 16:1B-2A AND 5, 7-8, 9-10 R. (see 5a) You are my inheritance, O Lord. Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge; I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.” O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup, you it is who hold fast my lot. R. You are my inheritance, O Lord. I bless the LORD who counsels me; even in the night my heart exhorts me. I set the LORD ever before me; with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. R. You are my inheritance, O Lord. Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices, my body, too, abides in confidence; Because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world, nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption. R. You are my inheritance, O Lord. PS 119:36A, 29B R. Alleluia, alleluia. Incline my heart, O God, to your decrees; and favor me with your law. R. Alleluia, alleluia. MT 5:33-37 Jesus said to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow. But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God's throne; nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. HBONow or watched Watchman?Star Wars Trailer talk 4:56Are we more excited, less excited? Has any of our perceptions of the movie changed with the new trailer?’They totally ditched Rey’s dark side portrayal and this trailer was her “Hero” trailer essentially. - feels like a fractured thread that will lead fans feeling unsatisfied/unless the movie is great then we won’t care. There are so many of the old Imperial class star destroyers instead of the First Order Resurgent class. B-wings, but also this battle takes place in the present time. Or Poe Dameron is riding horse aliens with BB8 in the past.Emperor Palpatine is in a walker like chair. I think they are just going to try and make the last 2 movies the Emperor's grand plan.It has an epic scale. Truly the END of the war will be the movie.ESPN and Disney hyping it up as a MNF sneak peek was funnier than anything in the trailer.Batman casting newsJeffery Wright is Comm. Gordon. I think an excellent pickAndy Serkis is going to be Alfred. He is a great actor, but IDK about the calm and witty Alfred. His role is much better suited to the character he played in Black Panther. WOW Marvel did it better again.Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman is fine. Not much to say I think she will do well with that character.Colin Farrell as The Penguin. I’m calling it now, Danny Devito did it better.Paul Dano as The Riddler. I think a good casting…. But Jim Carrey did it better.Quick take on Dark Phoenix - 34:50BOOOOOOO-ring. Why did they make this film? Because they wanted to capitalize on the fame and stardom of Sophie Turner AKA Sansa Stark.I literally said, “BITCH you are in space! How are you not dead?”I honestly am not sure if I should hate Dr. X for what he did to Jean, or if I should be sympathetic. Movie made it split I think for several reasons, but Beasts attack on him when they were drinking after Mystiques death was stupid and pointless. Also, thank god Mystique is dead. Except what about continuity with the original Xmen trilogy?Best scene was the train car fight at the end. Aliens were incredibly boring and generic and so at least they got to die in creative ways as the Xmen showed of their powers.Rick and Morty new season ep 1 discussion 47:36A little underwhelming. Idk, I have to watch it another 10 times, and how it fits into the rest of the show. Too happy and upbeat to be honest. I loved Rick’s unwavering hate and abuse of Morty because it was funny and the crux of their relationship. If that changes to a more positive one between the two then I think the show is dead. Where is my Sezchuwan sauce???I did love Rick’s arc as he was killed multiple times and came back to facist versions of himself. That part was hilarious. And the return of Mr. Meeseeks!Still had plenty of funny moments and was the classic style of a smart, well-made sci-fi animated show.Re-review of Joker 55:10Arthouse film with a AAA pedigree. Beat Deadpool as the most profitable R rated movie ever.Did it need to even be linked to the DC universe? Yes, if it wanted to be commercially successful.21st century Taxi Driver. Joaquin Phoenix was great. Visuals were excellent. Music was interesting as it would carry the film for long periods of time. Movie was very slow until the end. Then it was awesome. Last act of the film was magnificent.

Welcome to Season 1 Episode 4 of the Creative Business Success Podcast ! I got to chat with Douglas Humphries, a writer and editor I met through the #createlounge Twitter chat. His writing is currently a side hustle, but he would love to make it his full-time job eventually. In today's episode, we explore ways that he can move towards writing full-time, how to leverage the opportunities that come your way while side hustling, and being patient while growing your business. If you're building a freelance career or thinking about entrepreneurship, this episode is for you. Here is a cheat sheet of some of the episode highlights:Douglas' intro, 0:56All the plates are spinning, 2:46Douglas' current big project, 4:10Time management, 4:41Finding alternative revenue streams, 7:50Leveraging viral opportunities, 9:36A place for your creative process, 10:50Being patient while growing your business, 12:05Where to connect with Douglas, 14:45Let's dive a little deeper into a few solutions for expanding your audience, though!1 | Finding alternative revenue streamsA 9-5 job is necessary for many, but it isn't always the most fulfilling option. For Douglas, he's okay with where he's at for now, but he wants to find ways to make an income doing something he LOVES: writing. Many folks consider writing to be something you do for fun, not for profit, but it doesn't have to be that way! Yes, it's hard to 'make it' in the publishing world, but there are other ways to make a living writing. In this episode, Doug and I explored alternative writing revenue streams, including tutoring writing students and offering post-NaNoWriMo editing services. If you think outside the box a little bit, you can find new ways to make money doing what you love!2 | Leveraging viral opportunitiesOne of the big projects Douglas takes on every year is NaNoWriMo. This is a huge event in the writing community and could be one of the keys to his success. Back when I was running The Spare Room Project (now Scintilla Studio), I had a series of NaNo blog posts that I shared strategically on Pinterest. Even though The Spare Room Project is now on permanent hiatus, those posts are still bringing in a surprising amount of traffic. Douglas could capitalize on this recurring seasonal virality to drive traffic to his website and draw in his ideal clients!Knowing what the viral events in your niche are and leveraging them can be key to your success. Go find those opportunities and make them work for YOU!3 | Being patient while growing your businessSo many small businesses fail in the first few years. It's hard to start a business from the ground up! You have to wear all the hats, find clients, and you may end up feeling like a headless chicken. Don't give up, though! Douglas and I talked about why it's important to be patient while growing your business. Even if it feels like your business isn't going anywhere, you may be in the seed planting stage. Sow your crops and then tend them diligently and they'll bloom eventually. That person that you helped with a business problem out of the goodness of your heart? They might refer your best client at some point. You never know what can grow out of the smallest projects or helping hands.Let your business grow at its own pace. You can push it a bit harder, but don't get discouraged if it takes a bit of time. If you want a boost, apply to be a coaching guest on the Creative Business Success Podcast to overcome your own business obstacle!Want to connect with Douglas?Find him at DouglasHumphries.com, on Twitter at @Douglas_AmongUs, and on Instagram at @Douglas_AmongUs. The Search Is on for a New Director at Portland’s Regional Arts and Culture CouncilDuring outgoing director Eloise Damrosch’s 30-year tenure, the Regional Arts and Culture Council has grown from a small Multnomah County bureau to a flourishing tri-county arts council. In the first of several stories, we look at the search for her replacement to oversee the $9 million arts office. It could be one of the most important hires for decades to come.Kent Nerburn’s Classic Novel, “Neither Wolf Nor Dog,” Hits the Big Screen and the U.K. - 6:36A notable writer has quietly relocated to Portland from Minnesota. Kent Nerburn has written and edited more than a dozen award-winning books and has been praised as one of the few authors who can respectfully bridge the gap between Native American and non-Native cultures. His 1994 book, “Neither Wolf Nor Dog” — about his travels with a Lakota elder — has become a cult classic, and now it’s been made into a movie that’s currently screening in Corvallis and opening in Portland Aug. 11 at Cinema 21, with dates still to come in Bend, Ashland, Salem, Pendleton, Klamath Falls and Sisters. (You can find confirmed theaters on the film's Facebook page.) It also recently made a splash in the U.K. due to an unlikely fan: musician Robert Plant.Suspended Moment: Two Artists Explore a Devastating Act of War - 21:25A Portland visual artist and a choreographer have come together for a performance work that bears witness to the nuclear annihilation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the lingering, complex Japanese and American narratives that have evolved since. Yukiyo Kawano is a Japanese visual artist living in Portland who grew up in Hiroshima, and choreographer and dancer Meshi Chavez is from Albuquerque. They’ve performed their collaboration, "Suspended Moment," in places with strong ties to atomic history, like Los Alamos, New Mexico, and the Hanford Site, and are now bringing it to Portland on Aug. 9, the 72nd anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki, as part of an event organized by Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility: Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki - from Despair to Hope.Portland State Chamber Choir Releases the First U.S. Album of Songs by Latvian Composer Eriks Esenwalds - 28:31The Portland State University Chamber Choir sings way above its weight class, regularly challenging professional choirs to top laurels at international competitions, and a lot of the credit goes to PSU’s dynamic choral director, Ethan Sperry. Sperry has formed creative partnerships with collaborators from around the globe, including one of Europe’s hottest young Mozarts, Eriks Esenwald. The Portland State Chamber Choir has premiered a number of Esenwald’s works over the years, and this week it is releasing the first U.S. album of his music, “The Doors of Heaven.”To Open or Not to Open? With Eclipse Tourists on the Way, Businesses in Grant County Have to Decide - 37:15Counties and towns in the path of the coming eclipse are all wrestling with two huge questions: Just how many people are going to show up for this massive celestial event, and how do we prepare for them? After all, travel officials are estimating 1 million people are headed to Oregon alone.Grant County is in the odd position of having experienced big influxes of people a couple of times, from large firefighting teams to the annual Rainbow Gathering earlier this summer. We checked in with business owners to hear what they’ve learned about staying open for the extra patrons — or not.Remembering Oregon Poet Laureate Peter Sears - 42:36Poet and teacher Peter Sears died July 20. Sears came to Oregon in 1974 and was active in the state’s literary community for more than 40 years, serving as Oregon’s seventh Poet Laureate from 2014 to 2016. One of his goals as Poet Laureate was to broaden the base of the “global linguistic community” — instead of reading by himself as he traveled the state, he sought out people creating works in their native languages to share the stage and read with him. Elizabeth Rusch’s New Piano-Themed Children’s Book: "The Music of Life" - 47:01Once upon a time, a few hundred years ago, there were two kinds of keyboards: soft ones and loud ones. If you wanted to play loudly and softly on the same instrument, you were out of luck. Then one man in 17th century Florence changed that. Portland author Elizabeth Rusch tells his story in her new children’s book, “The Music of Life.” She and pianist collaborator David Saffert joined OPB’s Dave Miller to talk about the book and to illustrate what makes a piano so special.
