Concluding the opening tale of Series 9, with the account of "The Fox" - how back in 1984 one man brought a wave of terror with his horrific crimes, not just to his hunting grounds in the South of England - but to the country as a whole. How he was caught? I'll tell you in one of the most fascinating tales I have ever covered on the show. The episode contains details and descriptions of crimes and events, involving descriptions of a sexual nature, and descriptions of animal mistreatment, that some listeners may find disturbing and or distressing, so discretion is advised whilst listening. A tale of savagery from the late 1990's, and the UK county of Hampshire comes this time around, as we hear of the horrors committed by an individual that simply, selfishly and deludedly, could not take rejection. So extremely dangerous was this individual considered, that it led to warnings to women across Europe - in this tale, you will hear why. The episode contains details and descriptions of crimes and events, involving injury detail, and descriptions of a sexual nature, that some listeners may find disturbing and or distressing, so discretion is advised whilst listening. By the 1930s forensic police work had just begun to come into its own. The late 1920s had introduced advancements that had seen investigations using more than simple fingerprint evidence to solve crime and in America the FBI's technical crime lab would firmly establish itself over the first half of the decade. Both in the UK and the USA experts from outside of the police or detective agencies were routinely drafted in to help on cases and in the UK there were none more qualified than the professors in the medical universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. In 1935 a grim discovery in a rural Scottish town opened a sensational case that would see the country's finest experts challenged to not only help the police to solve a murder case, but to pioneer multiple new forensic techniques along the way, creating innovative methods that would go on to be used right up to the modern day. As the 2nd World War came to an end, Albert Pierrepoint was settling down to married life, while running a pub in Lancashire. As the Second World War began, Blackouts were enforced, with the aim of offering protection from the German bombs, but the darkness was also the perfect cover for those with ill intentions, including Gordon Cummins who would gain the moniker, The Blackout Ripper. In this episode, Annie and Jenny tell one more tale from Greyfriars Kirkyard. It's a story of a very good boy, Greyfriars Bobby. Perhaps one of the most famous dogs in the world, the story of Greyfriars Bobby took Victorian Scotland by storm. But despite his story carrying through the decades, inspiring many books, and even a Disney film, what do we really know about the little Skye Terrier? For there are many questions that swirl around this tale of the ages: Just what is the original story of Bobby? Who was his owner? How did he end up in Greyfriars kirkyard? Why did he stay? And perhaps most importantly, did he ever even exist? Let's travel back to Victorian Scotland to find out. Marguerite Alibert was a woman set on getting what she wanted out of life. She was raised a very poor girl and was sent away from her family at a very young age to go and live with the Sisters of Mary. When she became pregnant at 16 and lost the job they had set up for her she was left all alone in the world and had to turn to sex work to make a living. She ended up being one of the most popular and desired courtesans in Paris, but that reputation would not remain spotless for long. Soon Marguerite, after scamming multiple men… like Prince Edward VIII, would meet a young Egyptian “Prince.” Their life was set up to be picture perfect, but all was not as it seemed. Just six months into their marriage, one of them would end up murdered. Thank you to David White for research assistance!Resources:Aberdeen Press and Journal. 1923. "Fahmy Trial." In this episode, Annie and Jenny investigate some of the unexplained phenomena seen in the skies above Scotland. Since the 1990s the town of Bonnybridge has been the centre of Scotland's UFO activity, with thousands of reported sightings leading to it being crowned ‘The Roswell of Scotland'. It is a hotspot in the greater area known as The Falkirk Triangle, in which many strange and unexplained encounters have occurred. Perhaps the best-known of these is Bob Taylor, a forester who saw more than just trees in the forest. Listen to this world famous alien encounter explored in depth, through the portal of local newspapers. Bob's encounter is not the only one reported in the Scottish press, from Edinburgh to Aberdeen, these sightings are always exciting and sometimes newsworthy. Some are mysterious and unsolved, others are mysterious and solved, but all… are out of this world. None more so than Annie's very own tale of a mysterious encounter in the Highlands. It was a damp August evening in 1925 when 21 year old Iris Watkins made her way to the post box at the end of the lane. The two letters that she posted made it to their destination the next day, but Iris never returned home. The small South Wales town of Blackwood became a hive of activity, with many locals joining in the search and the community full of rumours regarding what had happened to the young shop assistant. A little over a month later Iris's body was found in a brook on the outskirts of the town, but that was just the beginning of the mystery. Jenny and Annie learn about the geology of the Scottish Lowlands, and travel as a wee grain of sand through half a billion years of geologic movement, ending up within the River Tweed. In more recent history, we unravel Arthurian legends to explore the story of Merlin, the wizard of the wilds. A real cornucopia of Celtic mythologies and folklore. Join Annie and Jenny as they get in the festive mood and journey back to the Yuletide crimes of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The reformation resulted in the banning of many celebrations, including yuletide festivities. Those caught celebrating were brought before the Kirk Sessions, and this resulted in strangely detailed records of the celebratory practices of the time. Guising and cross-dressing, dancing, eating goose, and baking bread were all punishable by law, listen in to find out more about each tradition. This episode is sponsored by Scotland Shop. The culmination of the Thriller arc of this series of The True Crime Enthusiast Podcast drops here in this final episode, where we see just what David Mulcahy's conviction meant for so many - the victims, as well as the side of law and order. We catch up with developments over the twenty plus years since the conviction, and i give my own thoughts and feedback concerning the entire arc. The multi part episodes are dedicated to the women who were blighted by the pair, and the three who lost their lives. Music used in this episode: "The Descent" by Kevin Macleod. PLEASE LISTEN TO ‘SEASON 6 - EPISODE 9' FOR PART ONE OF THIS TWO-PART CASE. Patrick Mackay was arrested in March 1975. He was suspected of murdering Isabella Griffiths, Adele Price and Father Anthony Crean. But while he was being held on remand in Brixton prison, Mackay told a fellow inmate he was locked up for murdering 11 people. He repeated this story to anyone that would listen including inquiring officers. Perhaps it was just a boastful claim. However, it was curious considering Mackay was awaiting trial for three murders. Who were these other victims? A mother of two is found bludgeoned to death in a suspected burglary gone wrong. The attack is barbaric. Blood spatter covers the ceiling. But in spite of the carnage, only a small sum of money has been stolen. Is a woman's life really worth the £100 that was reported missing? The attack shocks the quiet suburban neighbourhood as police struggle to find a suspect. Is this really a random attack, or is someone closer to home responsible?... Our Monsters Of Ayrshire trilogy concludes this time around on The True Crime Enthusiast Podcast, where, alongside the horrific murder of Mhairi Julyan, we learn of some of the other evil acts that Gavin McGuire is responsible for, and the reasons why I considered that one word befitting of him over so many others:Monster. The episode contains details and descriptions of crimes and events, including those of a sexual nature, and descriptions of extreme animal cruelty, that some listeners may find disturbing and/or upsetting, so discretion is advised whilst listening.Music used in this episode: "The Descent" by Kevin Macleod.
