Constructing Student Mobility: How Universities Recruit Students and Shape Pathways between Berkeley and Seoul (MIT Press, 2023) challenges the popular image of the international student in the American imagination, an image of affluence, access, and privilege. In this provocative book, higher education scholar Stephanie Kim argues that universities -- not the students -- create the paths that allow students their international mobility. Focusing on universities in the United States and South Korea that aggressively grew their student pools in the aftermath of the Great Recession, Kim shows the lengths to which universities will go to expand enrollments as they draw from the same pool of top South Korean students. Using ethnographic research gathered over a ten-year period in which international admissions were impacted by the Great Recession, changes in US presidential administrations, and the COVID-19 pandemic, Constructing Student Mobility provides crucial insights into the purpose, effects, and future of student recruitment across the Pacific. Constructing Student Mobility received the Best Book Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education Council on International Higher Education. Stephanie Kim is a scholar, educator, author, and practitioner in the field of comparative and international higher education. She teaches at Georgetown University, where she is an Associate Professor of the Practice and Faculty Director of Higher Education Administration in the School of Continuing Studies. An Interview with Dr. Nina Livesey After Livesey demonstrated that authenticity of the Pauline letters was inadequately and uncritically determined, she didn't think it was possible to make a good case that the letters were authentic, even though it's so commonly assumed that they are. Once she had gone through all of that, she looked for evidence of Pauline letters. The first ones appear in the mid-second century, from the school of Marcion! Livesey was not the first to make that discovery. Dr. Nina Livesey a professor emerita of religious studies at the Oklahoma University College of Professional and Continuing Studies. In addition to her specialization in Pauline letters, she's interested in a variety of aspects of Christian emergence. She was one of the co-chairs of Westar's the recently concluded Christianity Seminar Phase II. Nina has also written three significant monographs. We discuss her newly published book, The Letters of Paul in their Roman Literary Context: Reassessing Apostolic Authorship in this podcast interview. In this episode of The Via Stoica Podcast, Benny and Brendan speak with Dr. Ranjini George, a writer, teacher, and scholar who bridges the worlds of East and West. Formerly an Associate Professor of English at Zayed University in Dubai, and now teaching Creative Writing and Arts & Humanities at the University of Toronto, Dr. George brings decades of experience exploring the overlap between philosophy, literature, and lived practice. We trace her journey from growing up in India and Kenya, to teaching in Oman and Dubai, to immigrating to Canada, where she began weaving meditation, Buddhism, and Stoicism into her teaching and writing. Dr. George shares how Marcus Aurelius' Meditations and Thich Nhat Hanh's writings became constant companions, how Donald Robertson's How to Think Like a Roman Emperor deepened her Stoic path, and why she believes both traditions offer a daily, practical way to train the mind. The conversation explores where Buddhism and Stoicism align, in mindfulness, compassion, and resilience, and where they diverge. We talk about journaling as a form of self-inquiry, the importance of suffering “intelligently,” and what it means to pursue meaningful work without being consumed by comparison or self-cherishing. Dr. George also reflects on her books Through My Mother's Window and her works-in-progress, Blue Flowers and Miracle of Flowers, and how storytelling itself can be a philosophical act.Whether you are drawn to Buddhism, Stoicism, or simply the search for a good life, this episode offers insight into building your own philosophy of life with compassion, wisdom, and presence. You can explore Dr. Ranjini George's novel excerpt on Modern Stoicism: https://modernstoicism.com/blue-flowers-novel-excerpt-by-ranjini-george/You can also find her teaching at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies: https://learn.utoronto.caSupport the showhttps://viastoica.comhttps://viastoica.com/stoic-life-coachinghttps://viastoica.com/benny-vonckenhttps://viastoica.com/brendan-hoglehttps://x.com/ViaStoicainfo@viastoica.comProduced by: http://badmic.com

This new book is arguably even better, and Krista Tippett, the award-winning journalist, author, and public intellectual has called it "a moral, intellectual, and spiritual masterpiece." But one of the best things about it is that it is a workbook, full of guidance for the strength, endurance and flexibility training that we need to be doing ourselves and in our communities and organisations to meet the moment we are deeply in. It is not a work that can simply be ingested for its truth-telling, as you will very much hear from Vanessa in the conversation. Robbins, Dean Transcript Stu Levitan welcomes the very successful author, editor, and broadcast personality, Dean Robbins to discuss his latest book, Wisconsin Idols, 100 Heroes Who Have Changed the State, the World, and Me, (Wisconsin Historical Society Press, 2025) . It's a collection of engaging short essays about 100 outstanding musicians, thinkers, actors, athletes, creators, and boundary-breakers who are either from Wisconsin, attended the UW, or did something special here, and who had an impact on Dean. People like the seven cover images -- Oprah Winfrey, basketball great and human rights activist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (when he was still known as Lou Alcindor), comedian Chris Farley, astronaut Laurel Clark, musicians Richard Davis and Bon Iver, and Ho-Chunk memoirist Mountain Wolf Woman. For his part, Dean himself has had an impact, certainly on the state and on Stu. He started as a freelance writer in 1983, and became arts editor at Isthmus in 1991 (where Stu had the pleasure of being one of his free-lancers). He led the paper as editor-in-chief from 2008 to 2014, served as communications director for the UW Division of Continuing Studies for five years, and since 2019 has been editor of the alumni magazine On Wisconsin. And beyond this award-winning journalism career, Dean has since 2010 developed a separate and even more honored career writing 15 children's nonfiction books. That part of Dean's life and career which will be the subject of another BookBeat episode later this year. It is a pleasure to finally welcome to Madison BookBeat  Dean Robbins.

I can't think of a better way to close out BOOKSPO Season 3 than with a visit with novelist and literary podcast queen, Bianca Marais, whose new novel, A MOST PUZZLING MURDER, is a book she wrote to prove that it was possible to write a locked room mystery by the seat of one's pants. Possible, which isn't to say that it was EASY, and Marais made her task even more complicated by packing her novel with puzzles and riddles, and even a CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE element! Pickle Me This is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In our conversation, Marais talks about wanting to bring her readers deep into the narrative, and have them scribbling in the margins to crack the code. We talk about how writing a novel is like a puzzle anyway, and how she keeps breaking out of the confines of genre and marketing to write a different kind of book every time. In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery interviews Stephanie Cesca about her acclaimed novel, Dotted Lines (Guernica Editions, 2024) which has been named a finalist for the Rakuten kobo Emerging Writer Prize. Dotted Lines is a powerful and binary-breaking story that explores the complexities of families, bringing to brilliant light the vital but underrepresented perspective of a non-traditional family where the step-father is the hero, and it's the person who owes you nothing that gives you everything.  Abandoned as a child, Melanie Forsythe seeks stability and belonging after her mom's boyfriend is left to raise her. Despite her raw deal, Melanie grows up to have a good head on her shoulders and a strong bond with her stepdad. But her dream of having a family of her own is shattered when she suffers tragedy and betrayal. Still, the relationship with her step-dad—the one that's illustrated with a dotted line in her family tree—ultimately inspires her to create the life and family she wants. “As a family dissolves and reunites, Cesca's seamless writing traces the unpredictable ways in which those we love stray and return to us throughout our lives. Clean and understated, Cesca's novel reveals the complicated layers of an unorthodox childhood through compelling characters willing to open themselves to new truths.” —Ibi Kaslik, author of Skinny, New York Times Bestseller About Stephanie Cesca: Stephanie Cesca was born and raised in Toronto, where she lives with her husband and three children. A former newspaper editor in both Canada and Europe, she holds an English degree from Western University, a journalism degree from Toronto Metropolitan University and a Certificate of Creative Writing from the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies. The NeoLiberal Round
Life, Death and the Afterlife by Renaldo McKenzie

This essay by Renaldo McKenzie is a revised version of an originally Submitted paper to Prof. Ori Soltes at Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies on Date: October 25, 2021 as part of a final essay presentation in the Doctor of Liberal Studies Foundations Program. It was published in The Neoliberal Post by The Neoliberal in https://renaldocmckenzie.com in June 2023. The Essay link: https://renaldocmckenzie.com/2023/06/plato/ Abstract: This essay is a reflection on Plato's Phaedo, particularly regarding life, death, and the afterlife. In the Phaedo, one see's Socrates in Plato's eyes, Plato being a student of Socrates who seems infatuated with Socrates. The reflections here raise questions about why people wouldn't choose to end their lives if death brings glory, godliness, and beauty, and suggests that the gods created a system to prevent this through philosophical preparation. The passage also mentions a connection between Christian theology, particularly Calvinist and Armenians views of salvation, and the Socratic-Platonic philosophical foundation. Moreover, what was missing initially when we did this essay was the African influence from the time of Kamit. In this episode, we commented on the influence of Kamit on Plato and Socrates.... Renaldo McKenzie is a Professor at Jamaica Theological Seminary, Doctoral Candidate at Georgetown University and President of The Neoliberal Corporation, Host and Creator of The Neroliberal Round Podcast. Renaldo is the Author of Neoliberalism, Globalization, Income Inequality, Poverty and Resistance. Renaldo has an upcoming book: Neoliberal Globalization Reconsidered, Neo-Capitalism and the Death of Nations.
