We're expounding upon the unease and urban landscape that open the director's cut of the Exorcist. Perched above the ominous stairs that lead to doom (or towards the Key Bridge and expensive shops for the rest of us), a light switches off, the bushes rustle in the wind, and then come the cymbals. It's a solid opening that proves the power of ambience — without the added sound, the visuals become voyeurism of wealthy people. For those concerned, this week's ambience does not include jump scares, screaming, or exorcisms: just cars, people, wind, and unease. I'm leaving out my favorite funny moment from the film — I'm always tickled by (fictional) all-caps screaming (ATTICA ATTICA). The possessed shouts calling for "MERRIN!" after the priests enter the Exorcist house are undoubtedly terrifying. But imagine if Lankester Merrin's name was instead Amish Pickle. Amish Pickle would be engaging in pre-exorcist niceties in the foyer, and a blood-curdling "PICKLE!" would fill the air. That would be great (although not as great as a Richard Pryor exorcism). And then imagine the backstory of Amish Pickle earnestly searching faraway lands for ancient evil. Finding artifacts, that's Priest Pickle, stealing from Iraq. Staring down a waving statue amidst a desert dog fight, Pickle. Happy Halloween!

We delve into the Ohio 2024 primary elections where three white Republican candidates in the congressional race are resorting to racist rhetoric in their campaign ads. These candidates include State Representative Derek Merrin, who is a Christian nationalist known for his anti-LGBT stance and attacks on trans kids. The episode explores how these candidates dehumanize undocumented individuals by perpetuating a false narrative of a border invasion by dangerous drug smugglers. Their campaign materials depict imagery of fear and urgency surrounding border security, echoing Trump's policies and advocating for a fortified wall. The lack of compassion is apparent. We then dissect misleading claims made in campaign literature against Derek Merrin, painting him as a liberal based on selective votes. We meticulously fact-check these claims, revealing the nuanced context behind Merrin's decisions and highlighting the manipulation of facts in political messaging. The discussion also touches on the shortcomings of campaign regulations, allowing for deceptive practices in advertising.00:49 Racism Is A Deplorable MAGA Feature18:31 Derek Merrin the liberal??Full Show NotesSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon

Your Stupid Minds is back with more spooky fare for Halloween. At least, it gives the air of spookification. If you find mind meld hypnosis machines, panopticon-like modern interior design, and fever dreams about locusts spooky, then you'd probably find 1977's Exorcist II: The Heretic adequately spooky. After a botched exorcism in Latin America leads to a woman “accidentally” setting herself on fire, Father Lamont (Richard Burton) is tasked with investigating the life and work of the late Father Merrin (Max von Sydow), who gave his life performing the exorcism in the first movie. He travels to New York where Regan (Linda Blair) has no memory of her past possession, and undergoes psychiatric treatment at a cutting edge facility led by Dr. Gene Tuskin (Louise Fletcher). They use an experimental “synchronizer” machine to mind meld each other to relive past trauma in order to treat it. Instead, it unlocks the dormant Pazuzu, the demon from the first movie. Now Lamont must travel from Washington D.C. to Africa to Washington D.C. again to investigate this demon and defeat it once and for all. His travels involve seeking out a man named Kokumo (James Earl Jones), once-possessed by Pazuzu and exorcised by Merrin, who may hold the key, and special powers, the defeat the demon once and for all.
Well here were are folks. Please join me in welcoming back my brother Mike to the podcast. Was he banned? I am going to go on record and say "no." Regardless of the reason, we have another special edition of the podcast for you today. Today Mike and I will be discussing our experience with the sequel to the hugely popular video game Jedi Fallen order. I have said it before and I will say it again. I was so wrong for not playing the game upon release. As I write this I am trying to come up with a reason why not. The only thing that comes to mind is Cal Kestis. In my mind, I backburnered the game because I did not know the characters and did not want to get the know them. Either, I thought they were somehow related to Clone Wars or Rebels and did not think either of those shows were for me at the time. I was wrong. Having spent almost eighty hours with Cal, Greeze, BD-1, Merrin, and Cere, their second adventure far exceeds their first in almost every way. The gameplay was not so much an improvement but, expansion on the mechanics that were already good. In the previous game you have double bladed detachable lightsaber. The natural expansion of the combat system would be to allow Cal to wield dual sabers independently. The developers at Respawn did just that. What about a cross-guard saber like Kylo Ren? Why not? Blaster and saber? Holy shit! Now they have taken the gameplay to a completely new level. Of course the combat would not be complete without expanding Cal's force powers. Upon my second playthrough I realize confusion and mass slam, and mass levitate were some of the most useful. The game still locks off some abilities until you reach certain plot points in the story but, once you make it through the prologue on New Game + you have access to all abilities and force powers from the jump which are not tied to the story. This is the only part of the game that one might consider annoying. Especially on new game +. Some force powers like dashing are only tied to mobility. They do not necessarily make enemies easier to fight, so why do I have to wait until certain points in the campaign to use them. Same goes for the upgrade to you ascension cable. Towards the last third of the game you do not unlock the upgrade which allows you to attach to weather balloons you see all over the place. Regardless of these nitpicks, both games are absolute MASTERPIECES. Do not delay like I did and play them as soon as possible. Between the gameplay, story, graphics, music, setting, there is something for all Star Wars fans. Thanks for listening -Luca As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Join us as we embark on an unforgettable journey through the glitz, glamor, and untold secrets of the stars through the eyes of the man who made it his mission to bring their voice to the world! Where it all started for Bruce It all began fifty years ago with his first celebrity client, the iconic Michael Landon! In a lunch meeting, Michael shared his excitement about a new show he was working on called Little House on the Prairie. Bruce immediately took Michael to appear on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, who happened to adore him! After the show, Johnny invited Bruce and Michael to his lavish Malibu home for dinner and proposed a life-changing idea. He suggested that Bruce start a celebrity speakers bureau, with Johnny as the first client. Bruce agreed, and Michael Landon declared himself the second client! The next day, Ed McMahon reached out to Bruce to express his desire to join the bureau. The Influence of His Mother Bruce credits his beloved mother for the incredible opportunities and successes he experienced throughout his career. From encouraging him to pursue journalism classes in high school to suggesting he apply to UCLA's prestigious film school, his mother played a pivotal role in shaping his path. Her guidance led him to secure a job at MGM Studios, where he worked in the renowned Thalberg building. Bruce's Mother As a pioneer in public relations, Bruce's mother operated a successful Hollywood-based entertainment PR firm. She recognized Bruce's talents and potential and made him an enticing offer to join her at General Service Movie Studios, where she continued teaching him the intricacies of the PR business. That encounter marked the beginning of Bruce's involvement in handling the publicity for Elvis's film, Elvis on Tour, which cemented his connection with the legendary performer. Elvis Presley Elvis, known for his humility, treated everyone with kindness and generosity, whether they were part of the film crew or fellow performers. Bruce was privileged to work with Elvis on multiple films and witnessed the star's genuine thoughtfulness. After completing a movie, Elvis would gift extravagant presents to the entire staff, including directors, producers, grips, and sound technicians! Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson left indelible marks on Bruce, not only for their athletic achievements but also for their resilience and powerful messages. Bruce had had meaningful exchanges with both of them about addressing racism and its ugly consequences. Ali and Robinson exemplified strength and integrity in their respective fields and left lasting impressions on Bruce's life and career. Scott Carpenter's Troubled Appearance Bruce had a notable incident involving Scott Carpenter, one of the original seven astronauts, whom he had booked for a speaking engagement in Orlando. Scott arrived intoxicated, leaving the event organizers in a difficult situation. In spite of the embarrassment, Bruce still considered Scott's well-being and urged him to seek help for his alcoholism. Scott later addressed his struggles in a book and found a path to recovery. Custom-Tailoring Celebrity Talks When booking celebrities, Bruce connects them with certified meeting planners to discuss the event's theme, demographics, and audience. That allows the celebrities to craft talks that will resonate with the attendees on a deeper level. Randy Otto Randy Otto has a deep understanding of Churchill's persona. That, combined with his dedication to studying and embodying the iconic figure, allows him to deliver impactful speeches that provide insights into managing businesses effectively. Bruce emphasizes the power of well-crafted impersonations and personalized talks in captivating audiences and making a lasting impression. Negotiating Terms When negotiating with celebrities, Bruce emphasizes the importance of being clear about the keynote fee and establishing additional activities, such as roundtables or photo sessions, as part of the overall agreement. Bruce's Advice for Negotiating Celebrity Bookings Bruce highlights the importance of setting clear expectations when booking celebrities and negotiating their terms. By establishing a comprehensive agreement upfront, event planners will ensure a smooth and satisfactory experience for all parties involved. Bio: Bruce Merrin I was born in Louisville, KY, and my client Muhammad Ali loved that! We talked about that a lot! I graduated from Grant High School in San Fernando Valley, CA, and my best friends were Tom Selleck, Mickey Dolenz (The Monkees), Mike Curb (Curb Records Nashville), Mike Post (12 number-one hits to TV series like Hill St. Blues and Law and Order), John Washbrook (TV star of My friend Flicka). My girlfriend at Grant was Cheryl from The Mouseketeers Show, with gorgeous blonde hair and blue eyes. I graduated from the legendary UCLA Film School. While I was there, I starred in the Broadway hit play Tea and Sympathy. I had the lead role. Unforgettable experience! My acting teacher recommended only me to audition for Hollywood Squares. I got on the show and won the Secret Square with Paul Lynde, with tens of thousands of dollars in prizes! My mom suggested after graduating from UCLA that I apply for a job at MGM Studios. I got a gem job working in the Thalberg Building. My first client was Elvis in his film, Elvis on Tour. I had a memorable lunch with Elvis in the commissary and told him "We are going to get along great...we are both MAMA's BOYS!" I then joined my beloved mom's historic entertainment PR Firm at General Service Studios in Hollywood. Mom was one of only two women who had Hollywood PR firms. For three years, she taught me the PR business. I owe everything to my Mom! During the first week working for Mom, I walk into the office and Oscar Academy Award winner Joan Crawford is seated at moms desk! Joan gets up, hugs me, and says, “Your mom is the BEST PR exec that has ever represented me!”. George Burns was our next-door office member at the movie studio. Many movies and hit TV series were shot there. One day Mom told me that Michael Landon was shooting a film. I got entrance into the stage set, met Michael, and gave him my business card. He became my first PR client. Working with mom, Simon & Schuster was our client. Every month, we had a number one S&S author. We set national tours for them. It was an invaluable experience! Mom taught me how to handle entertainment PR. Invaluable! After three years, I launched my own PR Firm. My first two entertainment clients were Michael Landon and Johnny Carson. My first two sports star clients were Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali. You have heard the Johnny Carson story. After booking Michael Landon on the Carson show, Johnny invited us to dinner at his Malibu home. Johnny toasted us with Cabernet Sauvignon and told me to start a Celebrity Speakers Bureau. Johnny said he would be my first client. Michael then chimed in, and Ed McMahon called me the next day. So, Bruce Merrin's Celebrity Speakers & Ent was launched FIFTY YEARS ago! All of season 2 has revolved around the Jedi and reuniting Grogu with them. With boba, bo katan and Ashoka showing up, I can't imagine who will arrive next. While I want to see Luke Skywalker again more than anything, I have to say one Jedi I do think could answer the call from Grogu on Tython is Cal Kestis. There are a few reasons that he in particular might come, and I think it'll make a lot of sense once you reach the end of my explanations. Cal Kestis was a Jedi who survived order 66, this puts him as a possible candidate for knowing who Grogu was, especially seeing as how he was quite young when it happened, around the age of 12. Which makes him 17 once fallen order happens, which is 5 years after revenge of the Sith. I don't think he was the one who saved Grogu, but they might have known each other, and shared a strong connection. Cal had a power called Psychometry. This was a super rare ability granted to very few Jedi. One other Jedi who had this, was Quinlan Voss who used it in the clone wars. Psychometry is the power of seeing the history of an object upon first touching it. If Cal were to sense the familiarity of Grogu's presence reaching out on the seeing stone in the force, he would answer the call. He'd arrive on Tython and even though the dark troopers took Grogu to Moff Gideon, and Mando Boba and Fennec had left, all he'd need to do was touch the seeing stone to get a flash of everything that had just happened there. He'd see and feel what Grogu saw and felt. He would go over to the crater of the Razor crest's remains, and he would touch the scorched earth, only to feel who destroyed the ship that belonged to Din Djarrin. He would sense the urgency of the matter, and he would answer the call of duty. Another reason it could be Cal, is because Jedi Fallen order ended in the beautiful realization that force sensitive children who escaped Order 66 are still out there in the galaxy, and Jedi Fallen Order 2 will basically be that story of him finding these lost younglings and padawans throughout the galaxy. Cal's Jedi Master, who unfortunately died, while protecting the young Cal Kestis from the clone troopers, a Lasat male named Jaro Tapal, taught his padawan how to be courageous and focus on the good things in the galaxy, but also how to embrace failure as a learning opportunity. Because of his Master's teaching, Cal spends his time helping others and trusting in the Force which is what lead him to Jedi Knight Cere Junda and her mission to secretly restore the Jedi Order. Morgan Elsbeth. During the Clone Wars, her people were massacred. She survived, and let her anger fuel an industry which helped build the Imperial Starfleet. She plundered worlds, destroying them in the process. Could she be in charge of some line of the Kuat Drive Yards. Now check this, one of the artists who did Inosanto's hair and makeup was done by Maria Sandoval. According to Sandoval, Elsbeth was one of the last survivors of Dathomir. Dathomir played a large chapter in Jedi Fallen Order with Merrin. Merrin must have known Elsbeth as well. There are a lot of connections between these people in such a large galaxy that makes me really think Cal could actually show up. Grogu sits on the seeing stone, which lights up in the ancient runes that we see all throughout Jedi Fallen Order. Like was Grogu saving his progressing and adding to his skill tree atop the stone? The lore being used is one and the same I think, so it actually makes me think, Cal might be just as logical of a Jedi to arrive, than Luke. In fact, maybe even more logical. He could show up in the end, only to help save the day, and name drop master Skywalker, who has sent him to recruit lost force sensitives throughout the galaxy. The only problem is, they'll have to kill Cal Kestis off before the sequels start, otherwise it'd be too weird with him not around if he ends up being part of the story. Chris and Taylor go back to that darken doorstep with holy water in hand to review the 1973 supernatural horror film, The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkinz, marking this the 50th anniversary of its release. It derived from a screenplay by author William Peter Blatty, based on his 1971 novel of the same name. When young Regan starts acting odd her worried mother seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. A local priest, however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism, and the church sends in an expert priest to help with the difficult job. The film stars Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Lee J. Cobb, Kitty Winn, Jack MacGowran, Jason Miller, and Linda Blair.Follow us on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thepotentialpodcast/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thepotentialpodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/thepotentialpodSupport us on Patreon:patreon.com/thepotentialpodcastThanks to our sponsor: KEENKeen: get your first 10 minutes with any psychic advisor for only 1.99 with our link - that's $99 In savings: https://trykeen.com/potential ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
