Homily by Father Peter Zwaans Mount Gambier Catholic ParishGospel: John 21:1-19Jesus showed himself again to the disciples. It was by the Sea of Tiberias, and it happened like this: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two more of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said, ‘I'm going fishing.' They replied, ‘We'll come with you.' They went out and got into the boat but caught nothing that night. It was light by now and there stood Jesus on the shore, though the disciples did not realise that it was Jesus. Jesus called out, ‘Have you caught anything, friends?' And when they answered, ‘No', he said, ‘Throw the net out to starboard and you'll find something.' So, they dropped the net, and there were so many fish that they could not haul it in. The disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord.' At these words ‘It is the Lord', Simon Peter, who had practically nothing on, wrapped his cloak round him and jumped into the water. The other disciples came on in the boat, towing the net and the fish; they were only about a hundred yards from land. As soon as they came ashore, they saw that there was some bread there, and a charcoal fire with fish cooking on it. Jesus said, ‘Bring some of the fish you have just caught.' Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore, full of big fish, one hundred and fifty-three of them; and in spite of there being so many the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.' None of the disciples was bold enough to ask, ‘Who are you?'; they knew quite well it was the Lord. Jesus then stepped forward, took the bread and gave it to them, and the same with the fish. This was the third time that Jesus showed himself to the disciples after rising from the dead. After the meal Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these others do?' He answered, ‘Yes Lord, you know I love you.' Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.' A second time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?' He replied, ‘Yes, Lord, you know I love you.' Jesus said to him, ‘Look after my sheep.' Then he said to him a third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?' Peter was upset that he asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?' and said, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know I love you.' Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep. ‘I tell you most solemnly, when you were young you put on your own belt and walked where you liked; but when you grow old you will stretch out your hands, and somebody else will put a belt round you and take you where you would rather not go.' In these words, he indicated the kind of death by which Peter would give glory to God. After this he said, ‘Follow me.'The Gospel of the Lord.R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily by Father Peter Zwaans Mount Gambier Catholic ParishGospel: John 8:1-11Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; and making her stand there in full view of everybody, they said to Jesus, ‘Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, and Moses has ordered us in the Law to condemn women like this to death by stoning. What have you to say?' They asked him this as a test, looking for something to use against him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. As they persisted with their question, he looked up and said, ‘If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.' Then he bent down and wrote on the ground again. When they heard this, they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained standing there. He looked up and said, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?' ‘No one, sir' she replied. ‘Neither do I condemn you,' said Jesus ‘go away, and do not sin any more.'The Gospel of the Lord.R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Homily by Father Olek Stirrat Mount Gambier Catholic ParishGospel: Luke 19:28-40Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, atthe mount that is called Olivet, he sent two disciples, saying, ‘Go into the village opposite, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat; untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, “Why are you untying it?” you shall say this, “The Lord has need of it.”' So those who were sent went away and found it as he had told them. And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, ‘Why are you untying the colt?' And they said, ‘The Lord has need of it.' And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their garments on the colt they set Jesus upon it. And as he rode along, they spread their garments on the road. As he was drawing near, at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!' And some of the Pharisees in the multitude said to him, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples.' He answered, ‘I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.'The Gospel of the Lord.R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
La Porta | Renungan Harian Katolik - Daily Meditation according to Catholic Church liturgy
Delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Don Bosco Gerak in the Diocese of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Daniel 13: 1-9.15-17.19-30.33-62; Rs psalm 23: 1-3a.3b-4.5.6; John 8: 1-11WHEN STONE AND WOOD RESIST The theme for our meditation today is: When Stone andWood Resist. Jude is a naughty and wayward but smart teenager. Both parentshave been summoned by the principal and class teacher for many time regardingtheir child's behaviours. At home, Jude has been given various kinds ofpunishments, from ordinary reprimands to slaps and other physical punishments.Among all these punishments, the one Jude avoided the most was his father's beatingwith a piece of wood or throwing an object that at that time fit in his hand. Here, Jude's ingenuity serves to save himself from hisfather's punishment. He hid the wood and objects that his father always used tohit him. Jude did that, especially when he wanted to deliberately do somethingnaughty, he first hid the objects. As a result, by the time his father wasdesperate to punish him, the piece of wood was no longer in its place. Stonesand other items that were easy to find were no longer found. The father thenrelented. He felt like he was no longer strong. He had to think again, that in the end "stone andwood or object refused" to be used in punishing his son. He must findanother way, which is certainly more effective in the science of education, when corrections and improvements are to be made. This is very much a generalallusion to the repressive or violent approach in the way we solve problems inlife. The science of education, and especially that taught by Saint John Bosco,in overcoming the problems of discipline, delinquency, chaos, is preventive. Today we meet Jesus Christ in the midst of a crowd ofpeople who were always at odds with each other, namely the Pharisees and thescribes. They were faced with a problem, namely a woman who was caughtcommitting adultery, and this was considered a very serious sin. The repressiveattitude of Jewish law demanded that this sinner be punished so strongly bystoning her to death. Jesus came with an approach to love, which is awarenessin terms of opening consciousness and self-recognition. The approach of Jesus contains the activation ofrationality, awareness, reflection, opening the eyes and heart as the firststage. Then once our awareness and self-knowledge have been formed, especiallyknowing that we are sinners and in need of renewal, God is pleased to grantforgiveness. That process is experienced by the sinful woman described in theGospel earlier. The power of love brought by the Lord Jesus is able toeliminate the use of "stones, wood or other objects" as instrumentsto create goodness, justice, and peace. We must follow that power of love.Let us pray. In the name of the Father ... O Jesus, may asthe holy week draws closer, we will be stronger in its preparation, that is, torenew ourselves by forgiving our neighbors who have sinned against us. HailMary full of grace... In the name of the Father ...

Homily by Father Peter Zwaans Mount Gambier Catholic ParishGospel: Luke 15:1-3,11-32 The tax collectors and the sinners were all seeking the company of Jesus to hear what he had to say, and the Pharisees and the scribes complained. ‘This man' they said, ‘welcomes sinners and eats with them.' So, he spoke this parable to them: ‘A man had two sons. The younger said to his father, “Father, let me have the share of the estate that would come to me.” So, the father divided the property between them. A few days later, the younger son got together everything he had and left for a distant country where he squandered his money on a life of debauchery. ‘When he had spent it all, that country experienced a severe famine, and now he began to feel the pinch, so he hired himself out to one of the local inhabitants who put him on his farm to feed the pigs. And he would willingly have filled his belly with the husks the pigs were eating but no one offered him anything. Then he came to his senses and said, “How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and here am I dying of hunger! I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as one of your paid servants.” So, he left the place and went back to his father. ‘While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then his son said, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son.” But the father said to his servants, “Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it; we are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life; he was lost and is found.” And they began to celebrate. ‘Now the elder son was out in the fields, and on his way back, as he drew near the house, he could hear music and dancing. Calling one of the servants he asked what it was all about. “Your brother has come” replied the servant “and your father has killed the calf we had fattened because he has got him back safe and sound.” He was angry then and refused to go in, and his father came out to plead with him; but he answered his father, “Look, all these years I have slaved for you and never once disobeyed your orders, yet you never offered me so much as a kid for me to celebrate with my friends. But, for this son of yours, when he comes back after swallowing up your property – he and his women – you kill the calf we had been fattening.” ‘The father said, “My son, you are with me always and all I have is yours. But it was only right we should celebrate and rejoice, because your brother here was dead and has come to life; he was lost and is found.”'The Gospel of the Lord.R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily by Father Peter Zwaans - Mount Gambier Catholic ParishGospel Luke 13:1-9Some people arrived and told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with that of their sacrifices. At this he said to them, ‘Do you suppose these Galileans who suffered like that were greater sinners than any other Galileans? They were not, I tell you. No; but unless you repent you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen on whom the tower at Siloam fell and killed them? Do you suppose that they were more guilty than all the other people living in Jerusalem? They were not, I tell you. No; but unless you repent you will all perish as they did.' He told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it but found none. He said to the man who looked after the vineyard, “Look here, for three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and finding none. Cut it down: why should it be taking up the ground?” “Sir,” the man replied, “leave it one more year and give me time to dig round it and manure it: it may bear fruit next year; if not, then you can cut it down.”'The Gospel of the Lord.R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily by Father Olek Stirrat Mount Gambier Catholic ParishLuke 6:39-45Jesus told a parable to his disciples: ‘Can one blind man guide another? Surely both will fall into a pit? The disciple is not superior to his teacher; the fully trained disciple will always be like his teacher. Why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the plank in your own? How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,” when you cannot see the plank in your own? Hypocrite! Take the plank out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter that is in your brother's eye. ‘There is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces sound fruit. For every tree can be told by its own fruit: people do not pick figs from thorns, nor gather grapes from brambles. A good man draws what is good from the store of goodness in his heart; a bad man draws what is bad from the store of badness. For a man's words flow out of what fills his heart.'The Gospel of the Lord.R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Homily by Father Olek Stirrat Mount Gambier Catholic ParishGospel: Luke 6:27-38Jesus said to his disciples: ‘I say this to you who are listening: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who treat you badly. To the man who slaps you on one cheek, present the other cheek too; to the man who takes your cloak from you, do not refuse your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and do not ask for your property back from the man who robs you. Treat others as you would like them to treat you. If you love those who love you, what thanks can you expect? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what thanks can you expect? For even sinners do that much. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what thanks can you expect? Even sinners lend to sinners to get back the same amount.Instead, love your enemies and do good, and lend without any hope of return. You will have a great reward, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. ‘Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate. Do not judge, and you will not be judged yourselves; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned yourselves; grant pardon, and you will be pardoned. Give, and there will be gifts for you: a full measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your lap; because the amount you measure out is the amount you will be given back.'The Gospel of the Lord.R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Homily by Father Peter Zwaans - Mount Gambier Catholic Parish - Luke 6:17,20-26 - Jesus came down with the Twelve and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was a large gathering of his disciples with a great crowd of people from all parts of Judaea and from Jerusalem and from the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon. Then fixing his eyes on his disciples he said: ‘How happy are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God. Happy you who are hungry now: you shall be satisfied. Happy you who weep now: you shall laugh. Happy are you when people hate you, drive you out, abuse you, denounce your name as criminal, on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy, for then your reward will be great in heaven. This was the way their ancestors treated the prophets. ‘But alas for you who are rich: you are having your consolation now. Alas for you who have your fill now: you shall go hungry. Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep. ‘Alas for you when the world speaks well of you! This was the way their ancestors treated the false prophets.'The Gospel of the Lord.R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
La Porta | Renungan Harian Katolik - Daily Meditation according to Catholic Church liturgy
Delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Don Bosco Gerak in the Diocese of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Genesis 2: 4b-9.15-17; Rs psalm 104: 1-2a.27-28.29bc-30; Mark 7: 14-23THANKSFOR PARADISE Ourmeditation today has the theme: Thanks for Paradise. Europeans are verygrateful for the natural beauty of their homeland, but when they have theopportunity to visit other parts of the world, they are even more gratefulbecause this world is so beautiful to enjoy. Asians are proud of their naturalwealth and tropical world. But when they experience Europe or America, they areeven more amazed and grateful that this world is so amazing. Americanshighly praise their culture and homeland as if it's heaven on earth, but whenthey come to Europe, Asia or Africa, they become enriched by the reality ofthese places which are so beautiful and they feel so grateful. Likewise,African people who are very confident in the original beauty of their homelandwhich is full natural resources. However, they will be even more happy andgrateful when they come to Europe, America and Asia to have a share ofexperience on the beauty of these continents. In conclusion, we are gratefuland amazed for God who already created this world and handed it all over to us. Thefeeling of happiness and gratitude of the world were first made by the firsthuman beings namely Adam and Eve. After they were created in the image andlikeness of God as male and female, God placed them into a paradise that was socomplete and beautiful. In fact, we all follow the same process of creation. For instance, I was born as a person from a unique race and culture, placed inan environment in accordance with my hereditary factors. God indeed had createdeach of us in His image and likeness from the standpoint of the unique creationof ourselves and where we came from. SoI accept, I am happy, and I give thanks for my creation and my placement in theplace where I come from. All people too, which means each of us is gifted witha unique personality and was made attached with beauty and wholeness in aliving environment that suits each person's personality. Evil and sin can onlyarise when a person does not feel at home with the environment or the"paradise" where he or she is in. When the relationship between oneanother in this "paradise" is no longer a dignified manner among menand women but a threatening and detrimental enemy from one to another, therewill be a disaster and destruction. The paradise will become a garden of sin. Therelationship between persons and with their environment, according to theGospel reading today, is damaged by evil intentions and negative desires thatemanate from the human hearts. The evil truly comes from within the man and thewoman. We need to strengthen our gratitude and happiness because we are giftedwith the grace to live together with our neighbours in this paradise where weare in, and so evil can be avoided from our lives.Let's pray. In thename of the Father ... Our Almighty God, may Your Spirit always animate ourlives at every moment and in this wonderful world where we find ourselves andother creatures living together. Our Father who art in heaven... In the name of the Father ...
But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her." Luke 10 begins with Jesus sending out the “seventy”.“Afterthese things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by twobefore His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go(v.1). Jesus calls and commissions them and gives them specific instructions. He tellsthem it will be difficult work (v 2), with danger (v. 3), with distractions(vv. 4-9), and with many discouragements as they are rejected (vv. 10-16). Today, like the seventy, we are called and sent as Christ'sambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:18-21). It is important that we be busyambassadors, taking the message of the Gospel to lost souls. Luke tells us thatthe seventy went before Him to every place“where He Himself was about to go”(v. 1). Today, we have the promise that Jesus goes with us everywhere that Hesends us.“…and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew28:20). In Luke 10:25-37, Jesus tells the story of the “Good Samaritan”after He was asked by the lawyer,“Who is my neighbor”. From this storywe also learn that it is essential for us to be merciful Samaritans, seeking tohelp exploited and hurting people who need God's mercy. We should be a “neighbor”to the person closest to us that has a need. If there is one thing that has jumped out at me so far aswe have been going through the Gospel of Luke, it is even though Jesusministered to the multitudes, He always took time to notice the individualclosest to Him that had a need. And even in Luke 8, He was willing to leave themultitudes and to “crossover” to the other side of the Sea of Galilee tominister to one demon possess man at Gadara. We are both ambassadors and neighbors! But before we canrepresent Christ as we should, or imitate Him in our caring ministry, we mustspend time with Him and learn from Him. We must "take time to beholy." As we look at this incident that took place in Bethany, we see andlearn that the greatest priority in our life is to be a “worshipper”! Back in Luke 9:51, it appears that Jesus has completed Hisfirst three years of ministry in the region of Galilee, and we are told:“Nowit came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that Hesteadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem”. Just a short distance outside Jerusalem isthe village of Bethany where three of Jesus' friends lived, Martha, Mary, and theirbrother Lazarus. When Martha heard Jesus coming through her village on His wayto Jerusalem, Martha stopped Him and invited Him and His disciples to come inher house for a meal. And this is where we are introduced to her sister Mary. Thereare many women called Mary in the Gospels and this Mary is better known andidentified as Mary of Bethany. Mary of Bethany is seen three times in theGospel record, and on each occasion, she is in the same place: at the feet ofJesus. Here in this passage, she sat at His feet and listened to His Word (Luke10:39). Later on another occasion, in John 11:32, she fell at His feet andshared her grief because her brother Lazarus had died and Jesus wasn't there toheal him. Then in John 12:3, Mary and came to His feet and poured out herworship:“Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointedthe feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filledwith the fragrance of the oil.” On this occasion in Luke 10, it appears that Martha was aserver and Mary was a worshipper. But as we look at this passage, we shouldlearn that we don't need to make the choice of one or the other. We should bedoing both. The danger is that we can get so busy serving that we forget toworship! We should be ambassadors, neighbors, and worshippers allthe time! God bless!

Series: Beatitudes (part 1) Date: January 12, 2025 Teacher: Mike Mileski The Sermon on the Mount is regarded by many as one of the greatest, if not the greatest collection of teachings ever shared. In it, Jesus shares many of His most important, counter-cultural ideas. This week, we're introduced to the Sermon on the Mount, and the first of Jesus' Beatitudes. What's Jesus' goal in the Beatitudes, and what could He possibly mean by this first one: "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven"? #beatitudes, #SermonontheMount, #deconstruction, #happiness, #blessed, #theGospel, #jesus
Series: The Perfect Gift (Part 5) Date: December 24, 2024 Scripture: (John 1:1-13) Teacher: Mike Mileski At this time of year, Jews celebrate Hanukkah, or as a reminder that when things seemed darkest, a miracle occurred, and the light was restored. It points the way to God's true and greater light: Christ who is God incarnate. He said so while celebrating Hanukkah. There is a lot of darkness, but Christ has come - He proves that God is not done doing miracles; His light still shines in the darkness. #light, #Advent, #Christ, #incarnation, #theGospel, #Hanukkah, #FeastofDedication

It's often self-serving, fragile, and conditional. God's love is not, and we see it demonstrated in the choices of Joseph, who married Mary, and served as father to Jesus. If you struggle to know what real love looks like, this message should encourage and challenge you. #love, #Joseph, #Advent, #theGospel

Lane's stories of personal loss and suffering make him a powerful voice for those of us wrestling with how to go through suffering in a way that makes us more like Jesus, not less. It's true that suffering isn't like other spiritual disciplines - because it's not something we choose; on the other hand, it's just as much a tool that God will use to form us, if we're aware of His presence with us while we're in it. #suffering, #theGospel, #thecross, #jesus, #theChurch, #loss, #grief, #sorrow

Scripture: Matthew 17:24-27; Mark 10:13-16 Date: September 22, 2024 Teacher: Mike Mileski In the conclusion to this series, we ask what it really looks like to "carry our cross" and follow Jesus. We need to be really honest: the Christian life isn't usually a choice between A and B, where A is clearly God's will and B is clearly not. We need to learn the NORMAL rhythm of preaching the Gospel to our hearts. There really is no substitute or alternative. This is how we become like Jesus, or it doesn't happen. #discipleship, #theChurch, #carryyourcross, #jesus, #theGospel

When I got saved back in 1991, I soon began to pray for the salvation of my parents and my 3 brothers. I figured that if a Hell-bound reprobate like me could get saved, then certainly they could also. But as excited as I was, and still am, about the Lord, I soon found out that that excitement did not seem to be transferable. Instead, I learned about being willing to be used of the Lord, which takes some work, and I learned about waiting for the Lord's timing. On this Sunday Service, I want to share some things that happened when we went up to New Jersey to visit my brother Jimmy in the hospital, some really amazing things the Lord did as an answer to much and many prayers. It will be a blessing to you. In doing so, I want to also encourage many of you who have been patiently waiting for friends or loved ones to get saved which, in some cases, has seen many years or even decades roll by. Also, we will observe the Lord's Supper at the end of the service, so have your grape juice and matzoh's close by!
Week 1 we take a look at Mark 1:1-8. This Two Year Gospel Study series is a study of the four Gospels. We explore TheGospel of Mark first going verse by verse. This a book that highlights and applies the fundamental teachings of the Biblical faith as encountered through the life and teachings of Jesus. The series is great for individual, large group or small group Bible study. Following Mark we will progress through the next three Gospels: Luke, John and Matthew. We invite you to join us on this in-depth two year study of the Gospels. The Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are the first four books of the New Testament in the Bible. They are written by two of Jesus apostles and two 1st Century missionaries, contemporaries of Jesus. Written through the inspired Word of the Lord, they each share a different perspective. These teachings are 1 time per week and are 30-60 minutes long.
Listen to Marco Brocardo teach on the gospel of the kingdom and how important it is that we do not change the gospel and make it about us!
God won't say "Well done, good and successful servant." What He cares about is faithfulness. The fulfillment of God's promises won't be fully seen until we enter Heaven. #followJesustogether #prosperitygospel #TheGospel #faithfulness Join us on a Sunday

The “gospel” is a term commonly used in Christianity, but it can mean many different things depending on the church denomination you're associated with. In addition, the Bible itself doesn't clearly define the gospel. It is commonly said that Jesus went about healing many and preaching the good news (gospel), but it doesn't tell us exactly what that meant. If you were raised in the church and didn't have a clear understanding of what the gospel is, this episode will help you get to the heart of the message. Follow Rebekah Moyer on TikTok. The Gospel of Wealth by Andrew Carnegie audiobook. What is the proper mode of administering great wealth? It is to address this question that steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie's famous essay 'Wealth', or more commonly known as 'The Gospel of Wealth' was written (in 1889). His answer – Philanthropy. Not just any philanthropy, but specifically, projects funded and overseen during the life of the magnate, for things that benefit the community and engage the public in maintaining long after the magnate is gone -- libraries, parks, universities, hospitals, medical labs, observatories, entertainment halls, swimming pools, etc. Carnegie deemed it the responsibility of every self-respecting self-made rich person in America and the world, to help the poorer classes to rise. Before he died he had built over 3,000 public libraries throughout the world, and to this day various Carnegie foundations continue his work in support of various social causes. Our guest today is my new friend, Jono Linebaugh who came on to talk about his new book, The Word of the Cross. This collection of Jonathan Linebaugh's most important work on Paul explores the merciful surprise at the heart of Paul's gospel: a grace that, while strange and weak in worldly terms, is nothing less than the power of God, full of comfort and promise. Through twelve messages - two of them new - Linebaugh contextualizes and interprets key Pauline passages, does comparative readings of Paul in conversation with early Jewish tests, and enters into dialogue with Reformation theologians such as Martin Luther and Thomas Cranmer. Thorough and multifaceted, Linebaugh's work is at once exegetical, historical, and theological in scope. Accordingly, The Word of the Cross is a rigorous scholarly enterprise that takes seriously Paul's claim that the good news of Jesus Christ, despite appearing scandalous and foolish, in fact contradicts and overcomes the conditions of the possible through the power of God.Jonathan A. Linebaugh is associate professor of New Testament theology at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of Jesus College Cambridge. He is the author of God, Grace and Righteousness in Wisdom of Solomon and Paul's Letter to the Romans; editor of God's Two Words: Law and Gospel in the Lutheran and Reformed Traditions.
