Is there a role for love in therapy, whether in the traditional psychotherapeutic context and/or in the psychedelic space? And if we were to more consciously invite love into therapy, how could we do this in a safe and boundaried way?Dr. Adele LaFrance, a Colorado-based psychologist, the co-creator of Emotion Focused Family Therapy, and now the principal investigator of a fascinating study called "The Love Project" shares her stories and wisdom on all things love. The Love Projecthttps://dradelelafrance.com/the-love-projectDr. Adele LaFrancehttps://dradelelafrance.com/Dr. H/BFTAhttps://www.craigheacockmd.com/podcast-page/
Dr. Adele Lafrance joins us to explore psychedelics and the healing power of Love. Our conversation begins with an exploration of emotional processing and how difficulties and deficiencies in emotional processing both our mental health, our relationships, and our general wellbeing. We then step into psychedelics and the role they play in supporting our emotional processing capacities. From there we turn towards Love, what it is and all the accidental ways we conflate it with things that can include love but aren't love itself: romance, lust, infatuation, attachment, obsession, etc. We talk about the healing power of Love, both in our day-to-day lives and in various forms of healthcare, and why as a society we need to better learn how to wield and integrate that healing power of love. We then talk about encounters with Love as a transpersonal force during psychedelic experiences, the role of love in supporting people in their psychedelic experiences, and even the strange phenomenon of being harmed by too much Love on 5-MeO-DMT. Of course, although love itself is not sex, with any mention of love we evoke consideration of sexuality, sexual dynamics, and sex itself. Thus, we also talk about sexual healing, the complexity of sexual energy and behaviour in therapy, and even the risks, challenges, and opportunities of having sex while on psychedelics. ... Parenting books and research on kids often lump middle schoolers together with young elementary school kids or older adolescents. This obscures the fact that middle school is its own distinct phase. Join Jill as she talks with therapist, school counselor, and middle school expert, Phyllis Fagell, about the unique challenges middle schoolers face and how parents can help them build key skills to thrive. Fagell sees middle school as parents' “last best chance” to influence their kids at a time when they are still impressionable and still really care what their parents think. Listen and Learn: · What Yael's friends and son shared were their greatest middle school challenges · Why middle school matters—what is unique about this development stage and why we should attend to it · How we can encourage critical thinking in middle schoolers using hypothetical scenarios · The importance of purpose, what purpose really means, and how to help kids connect with theirs · Why kids tell lies and how to handle it when they do · How to manage tough questions about sex, drugs, and other challenging topics · The difference between bullying and other interpersonal challenges and when to intervene vs letting kids work things out on their own About Phyllis Fagell Phyllis L. In the United States, 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder at some time in their life. And as psychedelics are becoming more mainstream, there is an increased interest in using new tools to overcome these disorders. Today, with guest Adele Lafrance, we discuss the promising impact that ayahuasca, MDMA, ketamine, and psilocybin can have on a person who is struggling to heal from disordered eating. We begin our conversation by discussing the challenges of healing eating disorders and how psychedelics can help. Adele then shares her work with Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), and resources that are specific to clinicians. She speaks on ayahuasca as a healing modality with the unique concerns of ayahuasca preparation diets and the importance of integration. We close with discussing MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine as treatment options, and the importance of love in healthcare. Dr. Adele Lafrance is a clinical psychologist, research scientist, author, and developer of Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT). She is a leader in the research and practice of psychedelic medicine, with a focus on ayahuasca, MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine. In today's show we have a good time discussing another way to slow down or prevent the big fight. What if you are RIGHT? What if you need the child to go to school? They don't want to go. I am sure telling them more forcefully may not go well. What if your spouse accuses you of something you didn't do or say, yet you can't convince them otherwise? The goal of this show is to be able to hold your ground, but do it in a more productive way. Let's stop arguing and start connecting. You will really enjoy what we have on today's show! We enjoyed making it and hope it will help. In this show we answer -What if I am really right? -What if I know they are really wrong? Are they? Are the facts really important? -Is this really productive conversation? -How can we avoid the big argument over a very important topic? -What can we say to bring peace and a more connected conversation? -Do you have a shot at a second chance in a conversation? https://www.mentalhealthfoundations.ca/ The book mentioned is “What to say to kids when nothing seems to work” by https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=dp_byline_sr_book_1?ie=UTF8&field-author=Adele+Lafrance&text=Adele+Lafrance&sort=relevancerank&search-alias=books (Adele Lafrance) and https://www.amazon.com/Ashley-P-Miller/e/B084LNJ86S/ref=dp_byline_cont_book_2 (Ashley P. Love is a word that is often left out in traditional psychotherapy, though love remains perhaps the most central aspect of being human. Dr. Adele Lafrance discusses reasons why the concept of love is such a controversial topic and emphasizes the need to reincorporate love into psychotherapy. She discusses how experiences of love and our obstacles to feeling love are such as an important part of the healing process in psychedelic-assisted therapy. We discuss different types of love including love between people, love for ourselves, and the idea of being love. Additionally, we talk about self-care, working with eating disorders, and the emotional toll of living in a world in which social change feels like a necessity.
