Deepa Goyal got excited when she saw her first API product and has been working in API products ever since. She's worked for companies like Twilio and Paypal and is now Product Strategy Lead for Postman. She was disappointed at the lack of PM-specific resources, so decided to solve this with her new book "API Analytics for Product Managers". We spoke about API product management in general, and what it takes to be successful with API products. Episode highlights:   1. APIs are technical but there's a user-centric way to explain them APIs at their heart are simply the way that different applications talk to each other. For example, Uber talking to Google Maps or talking to PayPal. They enable seamless integration of a product ecosystem. 2. Yes, APIs need Product Managers (even internal APIs) It's important to have a customer-centric approach & strategy for APIs. You need to make sure that they're discoverable, useful & provide value. This is also true for internal APIs... internal users are your customers too! 3. There are definitely differences when managing API products For example, you can't track people's user journeys as easily. You often don't have the same visibility. It can also take a long time to go from initial discovery to actually receiving value from your product. 4. It's important to define API product value and measure it Sometimes value is obvious and sometimes it's not, but it's important to define what "value" means for your users (it's probably not just "number of API calls") and work out ways to measure that so you can optimise it. 5. There are differences in API product management, but your basic job is the same You're still speaking to users, focusing on their use cases & delivering value. The way that you express this may be different but, ultimately, an API product manager is still a product manager! Buy "API Analytics for Product Managers" "API Analytics for Product Managers takes you through the benefits of efficient researching, strategizing, marketing, and continuously measuring the effectiveness of your APIs to help grow both B2B and B2C SaaS companies. Once you've been introduced to the concept of an API as a product, this fast-paced guide will show you how to establish metrics for activation, retention, engagement, and usage of your API products, as well as metrics to measure the reach and effectiveness of documentation—an often-overlooked aspect of development." Looking Outside.

We start a new year with a new way of Thinking, approaching the topic of careful consideration, extrapolation and explanation in a critical way. Joining us is self-proclaimed overthinker, award winning writer, leading cultural commentator and Foresight & Strategy Lead at Reddit, Matt Klein. As can be seen by his intro, Matt takes on a lot and he takes in a lot. He starts by sharing how he loads information and how he avoids overloading - a process where he binge eats information and then let's it "simmer" at its own pace during a silent walk outside. When he returns to it, it forms a constellation of connection points and inspiration sparks. Both in foresight, Jo and Matt discuss the challenge of translating complex trends and ideas into something easily understood and actionable to others, without over-simplification. Matt does this by using tangible, real examples, particularly in showing how black and white (and grey) can co-exist in culture.Matt also speaks to the importance of recalibrating your reality by listening to something that makes you uncomfortable. From hearing that other perspective, he attempts to form an understanding so he doesn't shut out or attack those ideas he ardently disagrees with, because whether or not he agrees with them, "that person exists".Matt recognizes that this process of thinking critically can be hard work and often demotivating, particularly when you have to catch yourself from feeling like you've got it all figured out. But that our job should be not just pointing to what's interesting but to what's true. --To look outside, Matt takes in a lot of varied sources, whether it's publications, subreddits, or twitter accounts. He also carefully inspects an everyday interaction, as a method of cultural immersion. An example is being mindful when you're shopping by observing what's on the shelf, what people buy, what your local store is doing that's unique. Then reflecting on what says about that organization, about a collective society, about people. Matt does this intentionally as an exercise in being open, mindful and paying attention.--Matt Klein leads the foresight practice at Reddit where he studies culture and helps brands across all verticals identify emerging social shifts and author future-proofing business strategies. As a quantitative futurist with a decade of experience in trend forecasting, marketing and innovation, Matt has consulted with the United Nations and Fortune 100 businesses, to venture capital investors, TV producers, and startups on what comes next. With a background in CyberPsychology and Memetics, Matt's POV is rooted in the psycho- and sociological implication of emerging tech.An award-winning writer and leading voice in cultural theory, Matt's a frequent commentator for The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, The Atlantic, DAZED, VICE and Rolling Stone.Quoted by the likes of Arianna Huffington and Richard Branson, and subscribed to by thousands globally, Matt's own publication ZINE offers executives and students alike explanations into overlooked cultural trends.Matt is also the Founder and now Advisor of PRSNL Branding, an education platform helping systemically disadvantaged professionals strengthen their online presence and advance their careers.Always looking to give back to the field he loves, Matt is a university lecturer (NYU, Queens College, University of Oregon), keynote speaker (SXSW, CAA, Sweathead), industry judge (The Webby Awards), advisor and mentor. When not analyzing culture, Matt's collecting hobbies including cycling, drumming and wine studies, and volunteering with Big Brothers of...

Data Gurus – Episode 187 – Multiculturalism, with Adriana Waterston Adriana Waterston is Sima's guest for today's podcast! She is the Chief Revenue Officer and Insight and Strategy Lead at Horowitz Research. Multiculturalism is an important matter that has become a focal point for society in recent years. At Horowitz Research, they specialize in multicultural research. Adriana joins Sima today to talk about what they are doing at Horowitz Research. She also gets into the concepts of culture and multiculturalism and discusses various issues related to multiculturalism. The origin of Horowitz Research's focus on multicultural research Back in the mid-1980s, when Horowitz was focused on helping the nascent cable industry, they addressed the question of who would pay for television when television was free. That brought to light that multicultural people- especially black and Latinx individuals, watched the most television and were willing to pay for it. Yet, at the time, cable companies redlined black and Hispanic neighborhoods. So, in addition to their general market work, Horowitz also began to advocate for multicultural audiences and consumers, urban markets, international audiences, and foreign language-dominant communities. Census 2000 The 2000 Census led many people to understand that America would eventually become a multicultural majority country. Adriana joined Horowitz Research in 2001. She is Latine and is fully bilingual and bicultural. Around the time she joined the company, people were starting to talk about multiculturalism in a way that had never happened before. So she began digging into the company's data on multicultural audiences and developed a passion for it. Multicultural research As the company evolved and conversations about multiculturalism became more relevant and important, Horowitz became known for their thought leadership and advocacy for multicultural communities and audiences and their work in cultural insights. Culture Culture is not static. It is a very fluid and personal concept. It is about the meanings people attach to traditions, objects, experiences, places, and religious activities and the feelings they get from participating in those experiences. Challenges People are multi-faceted, and there is a lot of diversity in every community. A challenge that many marketers face when targeting different groups of consumers is the fluidity of the cultural groups into which people fit. Unlearning Recently, Horowitz has been focusing on helping marketers and content providers unlearn their old ways of reaching different segments and encouraging them to view everyone as part of a broader community. Horowitz's message Horowitz's message for marketers and content providers is that everyone's story is unique yet universal. The more they can understand that, the better the job they can do. Understanding the value of diversity, multiculturalism, and multilingualism Many next-generation people growing up in immigrant communities in America complain of feeling underestimated because they have darker skin, an accent, or a Hispanic last name. In some, that feeling and experience may even open them to overachieving. Fortunately, the United States is now in a very different place in terms of understanding the value of diversity, multiculturalism, and multilingualism. Maintaining a connection The evolution of communications and travel has made it a lot easier for immigrant families to maintain a connection with and revisit their home countries than it was in the past. That strengthens people's cultural connections and language skills and helps them stay connected with the food, music, and other ways of keeping their cultural traditions alive. Mixed culture families There is a growing number of mixed culture and mixed-race families, but people still tend to stay connected to people in their communities. Over the next few generations, however,

Cosmos is highly regarded in the Web3 world for its novel and robust design, which allows developers to launch application specific chains while benefiting from the shared architecture of the Cosmos “Hub.” For example, dYdX, the popular DeFi derivatives platform, recently migrated from Ethereum to Cosmos, citing a desire to be masters of their own fate. However, ATOM, the token most people associate with Cosmos, has never properly gotten its due, languishing outside the Top 20 cryptoassets behind Litecoin and Shibu Inu. The Team at the Cosmos Hub want to change that by making ATOM a key rallying point for the ecosystem, which they hope will lead to greater value capture at the token level and improve the overall state of Cosmos. On this episode, Alex and Andrew speak to Sam Hart, Strategy lead of the Cosmos Hub and the lead author of the ATOM 2.0 whitepaper on this vision for an ATOM-centric future.
