Dr. Elizabeth Ruzzo is an expert in genetics, an innovator in the birth control field, and is the Founder of Adyn. The company aims to match people with the most suitable birth control for their unique biology. Her scientific background includes a doctorate from Duke University in genome sciences and postdoctoral research at UCLA. While there, her findings helped illuminate the genetic etiology of the autism spectrum disorder. She also conducted research at the University of Washington, where she received her bachelor's degree. In this episode… There are plenty of businesses with a purpose, but how many have a meaningful mission? Not every company has a higher calling, but there is incredible value in those that choose to do more. Outside of charities, there is still a need for companies to contribute to the pressing problems of our time. Behind these companies are leaders that seek to create tangible change and fill holes that the marketplace has left empty. A business that fits that exact criteria is Adyn. Recently established in January 2020, Adyn helps people find appropriate birth control through science rather than guesswork. They received tremendous support out of the gate, due in no small part to its founder. Now that founder shares the story of her company and the mission behind it. In this episode of Next Wave Leadership, Dov Pollack speaks with Dr. Elizabeth Ruzzo, the Founder of Adyn, to discuss the state of birth control and how her company seeks to help. They start with Dr. Ruzzo's own experiences and her journey of starting Adyn. They then walk through various topics from hiring to mentorship to science and more. The two also discuss where the company is heading in the future.
We're in the business of talking to very impressive people who are working to solve incredibly tough problems— but Elizabeth Ruzzo, founder and CEO of adyn, may be one of the most impressive yet. Not only did she develop the only test for women to ensure they are prescribed the birth control that will be the least likely to have detrimental side effects, she also founded the company and fundraised as the sole employee of the company. She talks to Darrell and Jordan about the challenges she faced as a solo founder/employee raising money for a solution for birth control, why she decided to leave academia, and the complicated regulatory maze she had to navigate to get adyn off the ground. medical research gap: a disparity that exists because the vast majority of biological literature is based on single sex studies of males of European ancestry. Did you know that it wasn't until 1993 that it was required for women to be included in clinical trials? Or that as of 2018, 78% of people included in key genomic research were of European ancestry? The implications of gender and racial exclusion in medical and scientific research has had huge (negative) implications for the health of us all. It leads to biased data sets that then result in unequal diagnosis and treatment for people of varying backgrounds. Today on the podcast is Elizabeth Ruzzo, Ph.D., founder of Adyn, a company on a mission to make scientific discovery more inclusive. Adyn recognizes that medical gender and race gaps have profound and devastating impacts on available diagnostics, treatment, and care. To close this gap, Adyn is starting out by using genetic and hormonal info, combined with big data, for a birth control test. This test could tell you the best hormonal birth control method to use for YOUR particular genetic and hormonal makeup. It's precision medicine that not only will help the individual accessing it, but will contribute to the (long-overdue!) advancement of healthcare research for biologically female people. Elizabeth discusses what the medical research gender gap is, why it's a problem, and how we can help close it. She also tells us more about why her company is first tackling the problem of "trial and error" birth control selection that has plagued the reproductive years of so many of us, how they're using actual research and data to do this, and where this technology may go next. Lastly, Elizabeth explains why Adyn won't call itself a “women's health company.” LINKS AND RESOURCES: Join Adyn's waitlist for early access to their Birth Control Test Want to make a more immediate impact on health equity? NERDY STUFF: Drugs and Medical Devices: Adverse Events and the Impact on Women's Health "Between 1997 and 2000, eight of the ten drugs withdrawn from the market posed a greater health risk for women either due to unanticipated gender-prescribing trends or sex-specific adverse drug reactions." In Episode 124, Quinn interviews Dr. Elizabeth Ruzzo, a brilliant human geneticist who left the world of academia to launch adyn, her effort to help women find the best birth control for their unique bodies. Family planning affects everybody – whether they use it themselves or not. With 200 forms of birth control to choose from, you'd think women would be able to easily find an option that didn't make them feel like hot trash garbage -- but you'd be wrong. In 2021, genetic testing means we can make this process much, much, much easier. Enter adyn. Family planning is (wait for it) more or less ignored by medical research, but adyn's goal is to address that disparity head on and usher in a new age where women don't have to experiment with 43 different forms of birth control until they (maybe) find one that doesn't cause side-effects ranging from depression to blood clots and worse. Listen in as Elizabeth describes a world where a simple and private genetic test shared with adyn can lead to a medicine that gets the job done but doesn't ruin your day, every day. For this week's deep dive, Alex, Natasha, and Chris dug into the world of hormonal health, a sub-sector within the massive (and booming) world of digital health. The show was inspired by Natasha's latest Extra Crunch piece: "Hormonal Health is a massive opportunity: Where are the unicorns?". To round out the show, we asked one of the featured founders, Dr. Elizabeth Ruzzo, to hop on the mic and help us understand if hormonal health is at its infancy, or at an inflection point, in tech. The tl;dr before we hop into the show is that hormones -- while constantly evolving and changing -- are center node for a ton of health conditions that disproportionately impact women. These can include mental health issues, infertility, diabetes, and more. If you're someone interested in the world of digital health and always read about the Ro's and Hinge Health's of the ecosystem, this episode will teach you what else there is that deserves equal - if not more - attention. Here's what we got into:We started with landscaping! We defined the term "hormonal health" and got a sense of market size, as to show the opportunity there is to innovate here right now.Ruzzo walked us through the opportunity in pro-active medicine, as well as how investors reacted to her pitch when she was first raising her seed round. We ping-ponged around different reasons as to why hormonal health is an underserved category, starting with stigma and ending with stigma. This post from a set of venture capital investors discussing the market opportunity that women's health may have for founders and VCs alike. Then we got into Modern Fertility's acquisition by Ro, and why Ruzzo and many in the digital health community were surprised at the outcome. That said, it's still one of the rare exits, and as far as unicorns go, there are virtually no companies valued at over $1 billion that focus explicitly on women's hormonal health.Shifting gears, the trio turned to startups working on PCOS, one of the most common hormonal conditions out there that impacts one in ten women. Former Ro director Rachel Blank announced today that she is starting a company in this world, Allara. To round out the conversation we touched on the recent Veera venture capital round, and closed with a short discussion concerning the the term "femtech" and why it's not so good.Don't forget to take the Equity survey, and we'll chat you on Friday morning!
