If you're building a first-to-market solution using emerging technology that could meaningfully contribute to society and generate a 50x return, TDK Ventures President Nicolas Sauvage wants to hear from you. I invited him on the podcast to learn about TDK Ventures' approach to corporate VC, which uses backcasting to identify ideal future technologies and then invest in entrepreneurs who are working towards those goals. Portfolio companies include startups that make things like flying taxis, batteries from reclaimed materials and technology for nuclear fusion. “There's no doubt in my mind that no one can forecast the future,” said Nicolas. “But what we can do, all of us, is to dream of an ideal future, then backcast from there, and look at what are the gaps to get to this ideal future.” Runtime: 43:31 Episode breakdown 4:50: “The origin story of TDK Ventures was three interactions in classes from a Stanford executive program in 2018.” 7:59: Nicolas explains TDK Ventures' investment scope. 9:14: “No one can forecast the future,” which is where backcasting comes in. 11:39: “Right now, we deploy through two different funds.” 14:07: Inside TDK Ventures' deal flow and investment thesis. 16:14: “For any megatrends, we're looking at $10B+ TAM. It could be zero TAM today.” 20:31: How do you calculate TAM for emerging technology? 22:17: When it comes to due diligence, “we are prepared. We know what to look for.” 25:23: Why he's open to revisiting pitches he rejected once their technology matures. 29:59: Common misconceptions about corporate venture capital. 33:40: “How do we judge when is the right time? That really depends case by case.” 36:09: How TDK supports early-stage deep tech founders with academic backgrounds. 42:06: “I like to see entrepreneurs coming with a superpower; something that they're exceptional at that no one else is.” Links Nicolas Sauvage, president, TDK VenturesEntrepreneurship: A superhero's journey Corporate VC is booming, but is it what your startup needs? It was only after starting to supplement with estrogen and progesterone that Monica found relief from the menopausal symptoms affecting her quality of life and was able to get back to work. We are having a Stanford self-improvement sort of weekend. Yesterday, KEEN ON featured a conversation with two Stanford profs on how to acquire a venture capital mindset. Today, Jeremy Utley, the director of education at Stanford's Institute of Design, teaches us how to facilitate our own epiphanies. In his new co-authored book, IdeaFlow: The Only Business Metric that Matters, Utley - who boasts of having been “facilitating epiphanies for over 20 years” - promises to teach us how to radically innovate in the style of disruptive masters like Bezos or Jobs. Trust an evangelical Stanford prof to be in the business of transforming commercial innovation into religion. Not everyone, I suspect, will be quite as keen as Jeremy Utley in becoming personal assembly lines of their own creativity. Jeremy Utley is the Co-Founder of Stanford's Masters of Creativity at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford. He was formerly the Director of Executive Education at the Stanford d.school, where his blend of on-your-feet thinking and penetrating insight have earned him a reputation as a go-to advisor for CEO's and start-up founders alike. The co-author of the book ideaflow (2022), and co-host of the popular Paint & Pipette Podcast, continues to work on invention, discovery and entrepreneurship and demystifies the counter-intuitive techniques that drive productive creativity. Known for his work in Lean Start-Up and Design Thinking methodologies, Jeremy shows their ability to drive product development and consumer engagement at a fraction of typical product development costs. Jeremy is also a General Partner at Freespin Capital, a venture firm that helps legacy companies launch hyper-growth start-ups. He holds a BBA with Honors in Finance from The University of Texas at Austin (2005) and an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business (2009). Jeremy's book Ideaflow: The Only Business Metric That Matters unpacks why and how innovation is not an event, a workshop, a sprint, or a hackathon; it's a result of mastering ideaflow, a practice that elevates everything else you do. Check out the Ideaflow website at www.ideaflow.design.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Ever since former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissioner Mary Jo White announced the Silicon Valley Initiative, we have seen the enforcement division moving into the private company sphere. Major compliance and governance failures, such as Theranos, FTX, and IRL, have put the spotlight on what is communicated internally and externally in employee, customer, and investor communications. In fiscal year 2022, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) launched 760 total enforcement actions, including hundreds of stand-alone, follow-on, and individual actions running the gamut from failures of conduct to “first-of-their-kind” to cases charging trading securities law violations. Money ordered in SEC actions comprised over $6 billion, almost doubling the prior year's amount. What is the role of the compliance function in the pre-initial public offering company, and who owns it, how do you get started, and when do you start deploying resources? When the government or a plaintiff comes knocking on the door, what is the role of directors in managing the response? The panel explores what the role of the compliance function is and why directors should care. The NACD Private Company Compliance: Investigations, Regulations, and Litigation Webinar was sponsored by Foley and Partners Louis Lehot and Thomas Carlucci joined this discussion together with:* Claudia Fan Munce - Venture Advisor NEA, Board Member of Best Buy, Arteris.IP, BMO Financial Corp., Faculty at Stanford University Graduate School of Business* Scott Kupor - Managing Partner, Andreessen Horowitz; Lecturer, Stanford University Graduate School of Business; Board Director, Cedar, Headway, Pearl Health, Ultima Genomics, Foursquare, Labster, Journera, SnapLogic, MIO Partners, The Global Impact Investing Network, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Genesys Works* Jeff Thomas - Executive Vice President, Corporate Platforms, Nasdaq, Inc. Emily and Alex are joined by Stanford PhD student Haley Lepp to examine the increasing hype around LLMs in education spaces - whether they're pitched as ways to reduce teacher workloads, increase accessibility, or simply "democratize learning and knowing" in the Global South. Plus a double dose of devaluating educator expertise and fatalism about the 'inevitability' of LLMs in the classroom.Haley Lepp is a Ph.D. student in the Stanford University Graduate School of Education. She draws on critical data studies, computational social science, and qualitative methods to understand the rise of language technologies and their use for educational purposes. Haley has worked in many roles in the education technology sector, including curriculum design and NLP engineering. Monica Molenaar is a serial entrepreneur and an advocate for frank talk and common sense solutions around women's health and wellness. At the age of 40, Monica tested positive for the BRCA gene and elected to remove her ovaries prophylactically to reduce her risk of breast and ovarian cancers, thereby ending her natural production of estrogen and sending her into surgical menopause overnight. This began a multi-year journey trying to make sense of all the misinformation and lack of clarity around this phase of life. It was only after starting to supplement with estrogen and progesterone that Monica found relief from the menopausal symptoms affecting her quality of life and was able to get back to work. She was inspired to start Alloy to make sure that other women entering menopause would have an easier time than she did, accessing credible information, effective and safe solutions, and a supportive community. Monica is a graduate of the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. A lifelong New Yorker, she now resides in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, with her husband, two teenage sons, and an Australian labradoodle. In this episode, Nada sits down with Monica to discuss hormone replacement therapy. Monica shares how her own journey with menopause lead her to launch Alloy. She saw the disconnect between the knowledge doctors had about this phase in life and the women coming to them with common perimenopause and menopause symptoms like heart palpitations, increased anxiety, trouble sleeping, painful sex, and more. She outlines why hormone replacement therapy stopped being the go-to treatment and why it is so beneficial for women to look into.Be sure to check out Alloy's website and YouTube Channel. In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about what my guest this week, Melody Wilding, calls sensitive strivers. The term sensitive strivers refers to those of us who think and feel more deeply than others while also putting a lot of pressure on ourselves to set goals and succeed. Here we talk about strategies to help you set clearer boundaries, stop the constant worrying and overthinking, and better manage perfectionism so that you can achieve success on your own terms.About My GuestMelody's work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Oprah Magazine, NBC News, and dozens of other high-profile publications.Recently named one of Business Insider's “Most Innovative Coaches,” Melody's client list includes hundreds of CEOs, executives, and top-performers at the world's most successful companies, including Google, Facebook, IBM, Netflix, and more. Her recent speaking engagements include Amazon, Stanford University Graduate School of Business, Walmart, Conde Nast, Rutgers University, Adweek, and many other distinguished organizations.Melody is a licensed social worker with a Masters degree from Columbia University, and a former researcher at Rutgers University. Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas
There is an image, especially in Western cultures, of the rugged, authentic, self-made individual choosing how to navigate the intricacies of the social world. But there is no mystical soul within us, manifesting as the immutable essence of self. What we think of as our "self" is shaped by our environment and our genes, and most of all by our interactions with other people. Psychologist Brian Lowery argues for a strong version of this thesis, positing that our sense of self is largely a social construct. We talk about the implications of this idea, and what it means for shifting notions of personal identity.Post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2023/06/12/239-brian-lowery-on-the-social-self/Support Mindscape on Patreon.Brian Lowery received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of California Los Angeles. This week I talk to Pashmeen Mistry about Product Managers. We discuss the role, how they operate, what skills are required, how to work most effectively with them, and more. Pashmeen is an expert in the field of Program Management. I am fortunate to have him on the podcast. Here is a bit about his background. Pashmeen has just recently joined Amazon as a product manager. He will be working in the AWS team where he will have the opportunity to engage with customers in driving the adoption of a number of services. Prior to joining Amazon, Pashmeen was a Senior Product Line Manager at VMware, where he lead the effort around VMware Skyline - the core of telemetry and machine learning-based proactive support. Before joining VMware, Pashmeen was at BlueJeans Network and before that at Cisco Systems. Pashmeen has a Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering from VJTI and completed the Stanford Ignite, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program at Stanford University Graduate School of Business. I know Pashmeen well. We hired him into my organization at VMware when we were reinventing support. He did an absolutely amazing job of driving and guiding Skyline to become the fastest-growing and largest SaaS product at VMware. I split the podcast into two parts. This podcast provides a good overview of Product Management. The role of the Product Manager. How this role differs across companies. Who the Product Manager works most closely with. The kinds of challenges Product Managers face. The skills required for a Program Manager to be successful. I hope you enjoy.
In this podcast, I interview Rupinder Saini who just recently joined Google as Director, Google Cloud Support Operations. Prior to this, and for the last 13 years, Rupinder was at VMware as an executive in the Global Support Services organization. And before that, she worked at 01 Communique. Rupinder has a Systems Analyst / Computer Science degree from Sheridan College and completed an Executive Women's Leadership Program at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. I had the opportunity to work with Rupinder while at VMware. She ran a good part of the support organization in Broomfield, Colorado while I was driving the reinvention of the support model. She was someone that volunteered to help, brought a tremendous amount of experience, and always delivered! I think you will get a lot out of my interview with Rupinder.
