In this episode I chat to Daniel Cain who is putting his university degree to good use in inventing a brand new aero wheel platform (AIR). As a keen racer he recognised the limitations and cost of existing wheels on the market and came up with the concept of a base rim with interchangeable aero attachments to give you the full range of 50, 70mm and full disc options. The discussion with Daniel goes into detail on the aerodynamic characteristics of deep section rims and the special modelling software that he has developed to design his different covers. Hello and welcome to the Friday 15th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   TESLA MODEL 3 SHOWS OFF ITS SPEED IN EXHILARATING SALT FLATS RUN Tesla Model 3 on Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. One of the most awesome experiences had in my Trinity! #Tesla @Tesla @elonmusk #Model3 @Model3Owners Michael Striker (@Michael7Striker) "Model 3’s batteries were not even fully charged when he conducted his high-speed run, and the vehicle was entirely stock with 18″ Aero Wheels" according to Teslarati: "According to Striker, however, he opted to pull back on the throttle when he reached 90 mph. The Model 3 Performance, according to Elon Musk, would be 15% faster than the BMW M3 on the track, with a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Tesla expects to start manufacturing the Model 3 Performance starting this July."   ALL-ELECTRIC, 680-HORSEPOWER VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R TEST AT PIKES PEAK In the wee hours of the morning, The Drive was present for Volkswagen's onsite test of its electric Pikes Peak prototype race car. Romain Dumas is a three-time pikes peak winner and will be driving. The Drive reports: "Despite starting phase two of the day's testing on the upper half of the mountain without a full charge, Dumas maintained momentum through his first run on the upper half of the course, grappling with regenerative braking systems all the way."   13,000 PEOPLE EXPECTED TO ATTEND RENEWABLE ENERGY FAIR IN CUSTER About 13,000 people are expected to attend the Midwest Renewable Energy Fair in Custer this weekend. MREA executive director Nick Hylla: ""This is probably one of the most exciting things that's happened during my tenure here … the incredible growth in electric transportation and options that are out there. We'll have probably every variety of electric vehicle here on display, probably more than 100 vehicles."   UPS PLACES ORDER FOR 950 WORKHORSE ELECTRIC DELIVERY TRUCKS com reports: "Shipping giant UPS said it will buy 950 electric delivery trucks from Workhorse Group in what looks to be a key order for the electric vehicle startup." "This tops an earlier UPS order for 50 of the trucks that was part of a test program. Workhorse describes the vehicles as Class 5 N-Gen electric vans. UPS and Workhorse collaborated on the design of the zero-emissions vehicle." says Trucks. "With 60-kilowatt-hour battery packs the N-Gen vans can travel up to 100 miles before they need to be recharged. The cost will be about $6 to travel 100 miles, which is significantly lower than the expense of fuel to run gas or diesel-powered trucks. The all-electric delivery vehicles will cost about the same as conventional trucks but will have a lower operational cost over their expected life because they will be less expensive to maintain, Hughes said. UPS would save about $170,000 a van compared with a similar diesel delivery truck if it kept the Workhorse vehicles for 20 years, their expected lifespan"   POWER UTILITIES TO EARN $11 BILLION IN REVENUE WITH EV DEMAND Occasionally newspapers or those talking down EVs will put a story out there saying we'll face meltdown the moment someone plugs in their car and tries to make a coffee. Not only are most grid operators saying it's not an issue, a new report says they have a vested interest in making it work, as power shifts from oil forecourts to the power companies. The report also recommended that in order to meet the rising demand of charging stations, governments have to quickly facilitate standardisation of charging infrastructure and incentivise R&D for advanced charging technologies.   MINI BOSS: GOING ELECTRIC IS A REAL CHALLENGE The boss of Mini says it's one of the hardest brands to switch to EV power because of it's small size. Peter Schwarzenbauer said: “Electrifying Mini is quite a challenge, chiefly because of the small footprint of the cars. “But if you look at the role of electrification in the urban environment and the desire to be local emissions-free, there is no other brand with the credentials of Mini. It should be a natural fit, and that is the direction we’re moving towards for the future. The success of the plug-in hybrid Countryman shows what can be achieved, and the full electric Mini that is coming will show another step.” Autocar report: "The BMW Group is known to be working on solid-state batteries in partnership with Toyota, with a sale date mooted to be around 2025. Both smaller and more powerful than today’s batteries, they could potentially pave the way for a range of fully electric Minis."   COULD PANASONIC TRIPLE PRODUCTION OF EV BATTERIES Whilst some car makers who are catching up are having to get their batteries from wherever they can, Tesla get all their packs from Panasonic and that's not changing for a while yet. Tesla's target is to produce 5,000 Model 3s a week by the end of June. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk recently told analysts on the company's first-quarter results call: "We think we can get the cobalt to almost nothing." Tesla batteries use the NCA or lithium, nickel, cobalt and aluminium formula, while other car manufacturers have chosen to go with lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese (NCM) compounds" according to Channel News Asia: "Worries about cobalt shortages have prompted many to seek to alter the composition of the cathode part of the NCM battery to eight parts nickel, one part cobalt and one part manganese"   ELECTRIFY AMERICA INVESTS $44 MILLION TO MAKE SACRAMENTO A 'GREEN CITY' As part of the settlement for #dieselgate, VW had to set up Electrify America, to build out a charging infrastructure and increase the adoption of EVs. And now we've just heard details of how investment in Sacramento, California, will bring a series of initiatives to the City. $44million will be spent on a 'Green City' plan. The first part of the plan is two new car sharing schemes and of course the vehicles will all be Zero Emission. By March 2019 you will be able to use Gig, an EV sharing scheme where you don't have to return the car to where you hired it from, but rather any designated parking space inside a 13-square mile area where they operate. You will be billed according to time or use or the distance travelled. CNET explains: "The other car sharing service is called Envoy, and it's a round-trip car-sharing service (more like ZipCar) where users book, then pick up and return the car to the same spot. Envoy will feature a fleet of 142 vehicles spread in pairs across 71 locations, and each vehicle will have a dedicated Level 2 EV charger." Electrify America will also be investing in 12 new electric buses to run from the University Of California. But what about EV charging for you and I? "There are plans to build out the region's electric vehicle charging infrastructure by adding 10 quick chargers capable of charging at 50-, 150- and 350-kilowatt. These charging stations will be open to the public, and part of the funding used to build them will also go to the charging infrastructure for both of the upcoming car-share programs and the electric bus service" according to CNET.   COMMUNITY     You can listen to every previous episode of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Wednesday 16th May 2018. AUDI E-TRON LOOKS ALMOST PRODUCTION-READY IN NEW SPY PHOTOS Motor 1 has got hold of new spy shots of the forthcoming Audi e-tron quattro, and as were about 3 months away from seeing it on 30th August, it's pretty much finished. Motor 1 says: "Our talented spy photographers have sent us this batch of shots with a near production prototype of the EV, undergoing testing in southern Germany. Under the clothes will be an electric propulsion, which will produce somewhere in the region of 435 horsepower (320 kilowatts). What’s more important, the vehicle will be able to travel up to 248.5 miles (400 kilometers) at a single charge." The battery is 95kWh, and my take from the pics, it's very similar to the Mercedes EQC and the Jaguar I-PACE. There will always be comparisons to the Tesla Model X but it looks more compact.   BMW GROUP PASSES 250,000 MILESTONE FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES ON THE ROAD "BMW Group has reached the major milestone of 250,000 of its electric vehicles being on the road around the world. Announcing its sales figures for April following a record-breaking first quarter, the German automotive giant revealed that it had shipped nearly 10,000 EVs in that month alone, pushing it past the quarter of a million mark." according to BusinessChief. "We are delighted to announce that there are now over a quarter of a million electrified BMW Group vehicles on the world’s roads,” said Pieter Nota, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Sales and Brand BMW. "Combined sales of BMW i, BMW iPerformance and MINI Electric vehicles were up 52% in April (9,831). We are well on track to deliver on our stated target to sell over 140,000 electrified vehicles this year."   'MILD HYBRID' KIA SPORTAGE DUE LATER THIS YEAR 48v mild hybrids are an attractive way for car makers to add some electrification without the expense of a hybrid or plug in hybrid system, whilst doing enough to lower the MPG. Kia look like they'll be doing that to their Sportage in the second half of this year reports Fleetworld: "The technology includes a compact 48-volt battery under the boot floor, charged using energy recuperated through a motor-generator connected to the engine’s crankshaft. It means the engine can switch off earlier and for longer, even while the car is moving, and lean on a 13bhp power boost from the motor while accelerating, both of which reduce fuel consumption."   TESLA MODEL 3 TRAVELS 515.7 MILES ON SINGLE CHARGE IN HYPERMILE RU We love a good story of hypermiling. Being very gentle with your right foot and possibly following trucks too closely which we don't recommend. And Teslarati have picked up on this "A Tesla Model 3 driven by Denver Tesla Club president Sean M. Mitchell just set a hypermile record, traveling 515.7 miles (830 km) on a single charge. The trip, which lasted 18 hours, started from Denver, CO and ended in Topeka, KS." He did it at 30mph, Chill mode was on and regen was on low. And of course you wouldn't try this attempt without the Model 3 Aero Wheels. @SeamMMitchell: "515.7 mi (830 km): Though well short of intentions, great to set the benchmark for longest hypermile in a #Tesla #Model3. The last 100 mi really cut into range (poor route planning). Decided to play it safe and stop early."   LEAKED EMAIL SAYS TESLA MAY HAVE HUGE BURST OF MODEL 3 PRODUCTION THIS WEEK CNBC reports on another email from Elon Musk. Now we know what he meant by Tesla being a leaky sieve of information. "The email said it is "quite likely" Tesla will make more than 500 Model 3 cars per day this week, which would be a 75 percent increase over last month, Electrek said. Tesla was not immediately available for comment. Musk also asked employees to identify any production bottlenecks."   CHINA'S FAW TO INVEST $260M IN BYTON "Chinese state-owned carmaker FAW Group has agreed to invest around $260 million in China-backed electric car start-up Byton as part of an ongoing series-B funding round, two people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Tuesday." says Norihiko Shirouzu for Reuters. "The deal was signed over the weekend in Nanjing where Byton is building its headquarters and production facilities as well as a technology centre, they said. Byton is looking to raise a total of about $500 million in the round."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. 27 April 2018 | Leaked Image Of VW ID ‘Neo’, $155k For Polestar 1 and EV Rental From IKEA

EV News Daily - Electric Car Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 26, 2018 13:14

Friday 27th April 2018. IMAGE OF VW’S FIRST NEW PRODUCTION ELECTRIC CAR REPORTEDLY LEAKS But the top story today. According to Bild newspaper in Germany, and a story spread by Electrek, an image of VW’s first full electric car was leaked today. This is the I.D. - there were previously three were calling the ID, the ID CROZZ and the ID BUZZ. This now has a name, the Neo, and it’s the Golf-sized full BEV. It’s being put into production in 2019 as a 2020 model year. Why this picture came to light today is up for debate. Maybe a supplier leaked, maybe a member of staff at VW, maybe it’s a really good photoshop. Assuming it is a picture of a production / prototype model, as in something that’s further along than the concept, what does it reveal? Well it’s very similar to the concept for a start. The short stubby nose remains, as we’re seeing with EV platforms which are designed for purpose, and not mutating a design which was to have an engine up front. The front bumper now has one long, horizontal, open area running the width of the car and along the bottom of the front bumper, which looks like it’s to suck in air for cooling. Above that, as we’re seeing with designs like the Hyundai Kona or Model 3, there is no grill because there doesn’t need to be one. The bonnet rakes quite quickly up to the bottom of the windscreen, which stats low down the front of the car and is a big piece of glass, same as the concept, for lots of light. The side is pictured and that’s pretty conventional, and similar to the concept too, what we don’t see is the rear. The wheels on this picture look like the Model 3 Aero Wheels which some extra silver detailing, but basically the same for maximum range. It’s very simple, very true to the one you might have seen Johnny Smith feature on Fully Charged. I hope it’s a real pic because it’s stylish without being cutting edge. A reminder of the specs, and this could all change, but real world range of 400kms which would be incredible, and a price of £25,000 or $30,000. The Bild article, which is behind a paywall, does say VW want to bring it in at $5,000 less than a base Model 3. We recently heard of the double digit billion Euro contracts signed for battery and tech supply, the factories being retooled and investment VW are putting into their MEB platform for this, and other, EVs. There was a lot of cynicism on forums and comments today, and that’s understandable given dieselgate, but I think VW are too far down the road to be bluffing. Add that to the change at the top of the company with Herbert Diess now in charge, remember the man who came from BMW and responsible for pushing the i3 and i8 when nobody else was doing electric stuff, this looks like it’s real.   VOLKSWAGEN TO OFFER 48V MILD HYBRID VERSION OF EIGHTH-GENERATION GOLF IN 2019 Volkswagen will launcha 48V mild hybrid version of its Golf for the next generation, the 8th iteration of the car. Dr. Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Management for Volkswagen Passenger Cars with responsibility for Technical Development said: “Electrifying conventional drives will enable us to further reduce consumption and emissions while also increasing dynamics and convenience. We are starting this extensive electrification campaign with Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicle to date—the Golf. Our newly developed, cost-effective 48-V mild hybrid will pave the way for introducing this type of technology to the mainstream.” “Volkswagen will combine the combustion engine with a 48-V belt-integrated starter generator and a 48-V battery. This combination represents the gateway to the future of Volkswagen hybrid models. The 48-V mild hybrid makes it possible to coast with the combustion engine completely switched off, thereby saving up to 0.3 liters of fuel over 100 kilometers. This mild-hybrid solution also offers much improved dynamics and convenience as a result of providing an electric boost upon start-up” says GreenCarCongress. It's rumoured that the new Golf will make its first appearance at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show And of course by staying at 48v that’s not high voltage, requiring most cost and those orange cables you’re used to seeing on EVs. However the downside of soft hybrids is no pure EV propulsion Given our last two stories, the ID and the soft hybrid Golfs, i can’t see a future for the current eGolf.   POLESTAR 1 WILL START AT $155,000 IN THE UNITED STATES News from the Beijing show, not about a car now, but about the price of one you already know about. That’s the Polestar 1. Plug in hybrid, and available online only, several website today put a $155,000 sticker price on it. But at the Geneva auto show in March, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath told Autoblog that "Polestar will be subscription service, 100 percent", 2 or 3 years. So what I still don’t understand, why is there even a sticker price? Is it just to frame it so you know what kind of cars it’s up against?   IKEA FRANCE FORMS PARTNERSHIP WITH RENAULT MOBILITY IKEA has signed a partnership with Renault MOBILITY to offer its customers in France access to zero emission cars and vans. The service will help customers make their way home with their shopping by providing vehicles to hire by the hour” reports Fleet Europe: “the fleet will be all-electric by 2020. Renault MOBILITY envisages nearly 300 cars and light commercial vehicles being based at IKEA stores. Rates start at just €7 per hour, which includes insurance and 100km range. Customers access the vehicles via an app   PININFARINA DEBUTS K350 ELECTRIC SUV AND H500 EV SEDAN IN CHINA We talked last week about legendary designer Pininfarina, and now we’ve seen two models revealed at Auto China 2018. They are the H500 – that’s a concept for a full electric sedan, the interior features 4 single seats with adjustable touch screens for both front and rear passengers, as well as a touchscreen that slides on the door panels making it easier to share entertainment. The K350 however is an SUV that does look lovely, very modern, but all compact SUVs are starting to converge. equipped with the cutting-edge technology developed by Hybrid Kinetic Group for the traction system, with battery, electric motors with a power rating of over 300 kW, control unit and a range extender that enables a range of over 1000 km (620 miles) to be achieved.   MACK TRUCKS TO HAVE FULLY ELECTRIC REFUSE VEHICLE OPERATING IN NEW YORK CITY IN 2019 Mack Trucks, part of Volvo, plans to have a fully electric Mack® LR refuse model equipped with an integrated Mack electric drivetrain operating in North America in 2019. The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY), one of Mack’s largest customers, will test the demonstration vehicle in its highly demanding operations.   ELECTRIC TOYOTA C-HR REVEALED AT THE BEIJING MOTOR SHOW As I hinted to yesterday, was confirmed today at Auto China 2018. The Toyota CHR crossover was announced to be ready for China in 2020. It’s one of 10 electrified cars heading from Toyota to China. it’ll be the first full-EV on the firm’s TNGA platform, which also underpins the Prius hybrid and forthcoming RAV4   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
