Shoot us a Text.Episode #1040: Today we're diving into a transatlantic tariff feud shaking up the luxury auto sector, a multistate lawsuit over EV charging funds, and why VW's nostalgic ID. Buzz just got benched. A new U.S.–U.K. trade deal that dramatically lowers tariffs on British auto exports is saving jobs at Jaguar Land Rover—but not without blowback. American automakers say the agreement favors British imports over North American-made vehicles, threatening jobs and supply chains at home.British auto exports to the U.S. will now face a 10% tariff—down from 27.5%—for up to 100,000 vehicles annually.Jaguar Land Rover, with 32% of its global sales in the U.S., has resumed exports and praised the deal for bringing certainty to the sector. The American Automotive Policy Council, representing GM, Ford, and Stellantis, condemned the deal, saying it undercuts USMCA-compliant vehicles made in Mexico or Canada.“This hurts American automakers, suppliers, and auto workers,” the Council said, warning the U.K. terms could set a damaging precedent for future trade deals.U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the deal at a JLR plant, calling the tariff cut “hugely important to me,” while JLR CEO Adrian Mardell “warmly welcomed” the agreement.California and 16 other states are taking the Trump administration to court aiming to reinstate $5 billion intended for EV charger expansion across the U.S. The states say the funding is critical for innovation, climate goals, and job growth. The lawsuit challenges the Trump administration's February directive to halt $5 billion in EV charger construction authorized by the 2021 Infrastructure Act.States argue the move undermines efforts to reduce emissions and meet rising demand for clean transportation.California Governor Gavin Newsom slammed the decision as “another Trump gift to China,” saying it kills U.S. jobs and innovation.Volkswagen's nostalgia-fueled ID. Buzz is hitting a bump in the road. A pair of recalls—including one over a missing seatbelt in the back row—has sidelined sales of the electric van that was meant to channel the spirit of the 1960s.VW is recalling about 5,600 ID. Buzz EVs because U.S. regulators say its third-row bench is wide enough for three passengers—but has only two seatbelts. The fix? VW will install unpadded trim to reduce the perceived seat width and stay within safety rules.A second recall involves the emergency brake warning light, which shows amber instead of the federally required red.Dealers have been ordered not to sell any affected ID. Buzz units until the repairs are made.“It really took the wind out of my breJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
Kelly and Lizz are back from the Kentucky Derby with plenty of stories to tell, but first they're taking time to once again show love to a couple of their favorite snacks - Clean Simple Eats energy drinks and Built Puff bars. Aren't you glad we live in a time when they are available? But back to the big story, a trip to the Derby to check out the 2025 Ford Expedition. The trip started with a four-hour drive filled with games and no music... unless you could the diss tracks Kelly and Lizz wrote. Yes, you read that right, they wrote diss tracks for the Carnival vs. the Odyssey. Could this be what finally gets the Car Mom to go super viral? Once they got to Kentucky, the ladies were set up in some sweet digs with a lot of celebrities. Did they run into any of them? Well, they did make friends with a certain influencer during dinner... Before the big event, was The Oaks race where the ladies got to try their hand at horse track betting and quickly realized that betting against each other was just as fun. Then they finally got to get into the 2025 Expedition and learned that Ford can be brilliantly petty. What did they think? Kelly and Lizz will break it all down. After the Kentucky Derby, it was back to reality and cleaning out the fridge and pantry while getting ready for summer. But of course they can't end the podcast without talking about the ID Buzz recall. What does it mean for the future of the car? Today's episode is brought to you by Clean Simple Eats. The VW Bus, in its many forms, has become one of the most recognizable vehicles in the company's history. Sure, it might be second to the VW Beetle, but even that might be a close race. While the bus has been out of production for decades for use in the U.S. market, the folks at VW showed off a battery-electric concept in 2016 dubbed BUDD-e. Of course, wiser heads prevailed, and the concept van was updated and given a new name in 2017: ID. Buzz. Of course, it would be a while before the ID. Buzz hit U.S. shores, but a successor to the VW Bus is finally showing up on U.S. streets. The '25 VW ID. Buzz rides on the brand's MEB platform and packs a 91-kWh battery pack under its floor. That battery feeds a 282 hp rear motor or a 335 hp dual-motor powertrain. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's Mark Vaughn hops behind the wheel of the 2025 VW ID Buzz and puts it through its paces. Vaughn takes you on a guided tour of the ID. Buzz to highlight some of his favorite features. Later, Vaughn takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Vaughn chats with host Wesley Wren about the '25 ID. Buzz, minivans as a whole, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the 2025 VW ID. Buzz special.

The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz is the most buzzworthy vehicle to hit American highways this decade. Combining the exterior style of the classic Microbus with the chassis of a thoroughly modern electric vehicle, the ID.Buzz is a crowd-pleaser that stops traffic, as Host Jack Nerad discovered during his two weeks with the vehicle. Its exterior design features LED lighting, retro-inspired wheels, and optional two-tone paint that pays homage to its iconic predecessor. But the drivetrain is anything but retro. The ID.Buzz is powered by a 91-kWh battery and offers two drivetrain configurations: rear-wheel-drive with 282 horsepower and an EPA-estimated range of 234 miles and 4Motion all-wheel-drive with 335 horsepower and a range of 231 miles. Charging is efficient, with DC fast charging replenishing 10-80% in just 26 minutes. Inside, the ID. Buzz boasts a spacious and customizable interior, offering up to 145.5 cubic feet of cargo space, flexible seating, and advanced technology, including a 12.9-inch infotainment display, IQ.Drive driver assistance, and wireless charging. It's a stark contrast to Nerad's 1968 Type 2 “Early Bay” Bus, powered by a 57-horsepower 1600cc engine that delivered a 0-60 mph time of 37 seconds and a top speed of 65 mph. But is the ID.Buzz as good a value as that long-gone college-era VW? Nerad will have the answer. In our other road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague will have the answer on the all-new 2025 Ford Ranger. A finalist for North American Truck of the Year, the Ranger boasts a new engine that makes it much more competitive versus rivals that include the Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, and the Toyota Tacoma. Teague is a Toyota fan, but does he see the Ranger as the better midsize truck? He'll give his verdict in this episode. Driving News Our look at Driving News this week features a headline-grabbing development that could reshape the industry. Nissan and Honda, two global giants with big U.S. footprints, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore a potential integration. If it goes forward, this partnership could see the companies combining their efforts in electrification, platform sharing, and advanced vehicle intelligence. With plans for a joint holding company by 2026, this is a story with far-reaching implications for drivers everywhere. In more amusing news, Hyundai has achieved an incredible and largely esoteric feat with its Ioniq 5 electric vehicle, earning a Guinness World Records title for the greatest altitude change ever by an electric car. Over 14 grueling days, the Ioniq 5 covered more than 4,900 kilometers across India, traveling from the Himalayas' highest drivable point to below sea level in Kerala. But what does this record prove? Jack and Chris will offer their opinions. Switching gears to luxury, Jack and Chris will also offer their opinions on the 2025 Genesis G80 3.5T Sport Prestige AWD, a sedan that blends advanced technology, stunning design, and exceptional performance. Powered by a twin-turbocharged V6, the G80 delivers a smooth, refined ride while packing a punch under the hood. Inside, it's all about premium touches, from Nappa leather seating to a cutting-edge OLED instrument cluster. Our two reporters will deliver their verdicts in this show This week's guest is Brian Jannusch, a Nissan GT-R expert with a passion for the legendary sports car. From its iconic engineering to his quest to drive one at the Nurburgring, Brian shares fascinating insights into what makes the GT-R so special. It's a conversation that will resonate with sports car fans and anyone who appreciates automotive excellence. The episode also tackles practical advice with safety tips for 2025 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As the year begins, it's a good time to revisit basics like seatbelt use, sober driving, and staying alert on the road. Simple steps can make a big difference in preventing accidents and keeping your loved ones safe.

Jill and Tom opened this week's show hitting briefly on a number of topics, including melting EV charging adapters, Jaguar's perplexing marketing reboot, the electric Dodge Charger Daytona, the high-mileage Ram 1500 HFE, and the consolidation of Infiniti and Nissan dealer stores. Still in the first segment, Jill recapped her time in the all-new Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric minivan. Jill found much to like, but noted that the van comes up short on estimated battery range, and that starting prices are high. In the second segment the hosts welcome Mark Gillies of Volkswagen to expand the ID. Buzz conversation. Mark shared a number of key details, including brand expectations that the van serve as a halo model, and not a high-volume offering. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “One Minute” quiz, in which she is challenged to answer questions in less than 60 seconds.

We're rolling into Tuesday talking about some impressive ad results for some automakers after the big game. We're also talking about JD Power's latest report showing a dip in quality as well as Fisker's specific quality challenges. The numbers are in…after the auto industry's Super Bowl commercial showing VW, Kia, Toyota and BMW ads for their latest EVs drove a notable surge in online interest, with VW's nostalgic journey capturing the most attention.VW's ad, celebrating 75 years in the U.S., topped search traffic increases on Cars.com, Autotrader, and Kelley Blue Book. The ad that tied the development of VW with the development of America earned the third highest engagement among all advertisersVW accounted for 69 percent of all search activity after the big game, followed by 15 percent for Kia, 10 percent for Toyota and 6 percent for BMWSearch for the ID Buzz increased 13x on Kelley Blue BookBoth Kia and VW made it into the top 10 list for all Super Bowl adsBrian Moody, executive editor at Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book said, "Volkswagen specifically has woven their vehicles into the tapestry of the American experience...They not only captured that sentiment, but used it to introduce VW and the ID Buzz to an entirely new generation of drivers."The latest J.D. Power study reveals a declining trend in vehicle dependability, as vehicles experience more problems in their first three years. The 2024 study reports an increase in vehicle problems to 190 PP100, with nearly two-thirds of brands showing more issues that previouslyInfotainment systems are the most problematic area, with connectivity and voice recognition leading in complaintsElectric vehicles, including battery electric and plug-in hybrids, report more problems than gas-powered and traditional hybridsLexus, Toyota, and Porsche lead in dependability rankings, with Toyota vehicles winning the most model-level awards"A deterioration of vehicle dependability is unusual," noted Frank Hanley, J.D. Power's Senior Director of Auto BenchmarkingFisker's all-electric SUV, the Ocean, has been plagued by reports of sudden power loss, braking issues, and other technical problems since its launch, challenging the company's quality assurances and customer service capabilities.Fisker Ocean owners have reported over 100 incidents of sudden power loss, with issues extending to braking problems, glitchy key fobs, and hoods flying open. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating the braking issues, which Fisker claims have been resolved through software updates.Despite these challenges, Fisker delivered around 4,900 Oceans in 2023 but faces customer lawsuits and growing complaints about vehicle quality.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
