In Podcast #354, John Davis and the MotorWeek crew have plenty to talk about. Greg starts things off with an update on our Long Term fleet, aka vehicles we test for longer than our typical 2 week period. Then Alex breaks down all of the recent news coming from Toyota; from new models, to new names, to new colors. And Jessica is fresh back from Plano, Texas where Toyota unveiled the next generation of the best-selling vehicle in America…the RAV4. Plus a Lightning Round prompt encourages discussion on the possibility of the EV tax credit going away and a viewer has a question about why mainstream cars feel more luxurious than ever.

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1049: Today we're diving into Toyota's bold software move with the redesigned RAV4 Hybrid, watching Tesla and Waymo duel for robotaxi dominance, and seeing how Home Depot is holding the line on prices as tariffs rattle retailShow Notes with links:Toyota's sixth-gen RAV4 Hybrid isn't just sleeker—it's smarter. As the first model to feature the all-new Arene operating system, the global bestseller is now a testbed for Toyota's software-first future.Arene is built by Woven by Toyota, the automaker's in-house software arm and made up of three core components: Arene SDK (to build apps and features), Arene Tools (to virtually test them), and Arene Data (to collect and use real-world driver feedback). In practice, that means Toyota can push OTA updates that improve safety systems like Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 based on global user data, often updating every few weeks or months, mirroring how smartphone OS updates roll out.The SDK powers the new voice agent and center display; the data system creates a feedback loop that improves regional performance by learning from users in 180 countries.“Software can be an added layer where we can evolve the car over time,” said Woven CTO John Absmeier. “We help your Toyota grow old with you.”Tesla and Waymo are tackling robotaxis from different angles—Tesla with bold camera-only tech, and Waymo with sensor-packed precision. But a real-world test in San Francisco handed one of them a clear win.Waymo's service, active since 2024, uses 29 cameras, 5 lidars, and 6 radars in Jaguar I-PACEs.Tesla's FSD Supervised software, tested in a Model 3, relies solely on eight external cameras—with its FSD Unsupervised version launching in Austin next month. On winding SF roads from Twin Peaks to Chase Center, both systems performed well—until Tesla's FSD ran a red light at a busy intersection. The Waymo delivered a confident, human-like ride, including a lane change that “seemed like it was just tired of waiting.”“It's got New York cab driver energy,” said tester Alistair Barr of Waymo's proactive driving style. As tariffs squeeze the retail sector, Home Depot is leaning into its U.S.-based supply chain and scale advantage to keep prices steady—even as competitors like Walmart warn of price hikes.Over half of Home Depot's inventory is sourced domestically, with imports on the decline.CFO Richard McPhail says no single foreign country will represent more than 10% of purchases within 12 months.Q1 2025 revenue rose 9.4% to $39.9B, with average transaction values ticking up slightly to $90.71.The company saw 394.8 million transactions, a 2.1% increase year-over-year.“We saw continued customer engagement across smaller projects,” said CEO Ted Decker.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Driving the popular Mazda CX-5 SUV today, Mazda’s top seller, it’s been around a long time in ten models, a mix of petrol and diesel and front or all-wheel drive. No hybrid but I’m told its coming. I drove the second tier 2.5-litre six-speed automatic CX-5 Maxx Sport front wheel drive - $43,184 drive-away, which included optional Soul Red Chrystal Metallic paint at $795. A colour that has in many ways become a trademark of Mazda. The CX-5 a good looker, still our fourth best-selling medium SUV, behind Toyota’s RAV4 and getting some strong competition these days from Kia’s Sportage and Hyundai’s Tuscon. I did nearly 900km over the Anzac weekend and it really surprised - well sorted, extremely comfortable for four adults – the Maxx Sport well specified apart from the lack of wireless phone charging and a power rear door. But it has dual zone air-conditioning with rear outlets, a welcome head up display, a rather small 8-inch display screen on the dash but just so safe to use with a rotary dialer to let you scroll through a menu – so much safer than many of the new Chinese SUV’s with their large touchscreens and no active buttons. Warranty 5-years/unlimited km. Drive details next. I’m David BerthonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A lavender 1957 Chevy Nomad steals the spotlight at our Tailpipes and Tacos Cruise Inn broadcast from Lupe' Tortilla Tex-Mex in Katy, Texas. Owner Jim Craven shares his three-year journey with this head-turning classic, detailing what makes a Nomad special beyond just being a two-door station wagon - from the angled window pillars to the nine distinctive grooves on the car's top.Under the hood, this beauty houses a monstrous 502 cubic inch crate motor with dual four-barrel carburetors that, in Jim's words, "will lay rubber in second and third gear." While Jim initially had reservations about the lavender paint when buying sight unseen, it's now the car's most celebrated feature, routinely earning trophies and starting conversations at every show. What resonates most is Jim's refreshing philosophy about classic car ownership. Unlike those who treat vehicles as untouchable museum pieces, he drives his Nomad regularly, believing classics should be enjoyed rather than preserved as "garage queens." This approach has made him and his distinctive vehicle fixtures in the local car community. We also take listeners through fascinating automotive milestones in our "This Week in Auto History" segment, from the Jeep's 1941 military debut to the Ford Mustang's landmark introduction at the 1964 New York World's Fair. Plus, we decode mysterious car acronyms (did you know RAV4 stands for "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive"?) and highlight game-changing supplier innovations like anti-lock brakes and touchscreens that transformed how we experience automobiles.Don't miss our upcoming broadcast from the Hot Rod Tour of Texas! Shoot us a Text.Episode #1023: From tariff talk taking over the New York Auto Show to Toyota rethinking RAV4 production, and LiveWire's electric leap into law enforcement—we've got you covered.Show Notes with links:Automakers came to New York looking to celebrate new vehicles, but found themselves answering the same old questions—about tariffs. Despite flashy debuts and high-octane reveals, the weight of trade policy loomed over every conversation.Subaru U.S. chief Jeff Walters debuted the all-new Outback, only to field immediate questions about tariffs instead of the vehicle.Nissan embraced the tension with a tongue-in-cheek window decal reading “FREE from new tariffs” on its U.S.-built models. They also revealed plans to build 80% of U.S. inventory domestically, up from 50%, citing flexibility amid tariff volatility.Tariffs dominated nearly every conference panel, with one moderator finally pausing and saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, the bar is open.” It was 10 a.m.Our friend John Bozzella of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation called for more time and flexibility, warning that rushed tariff policy could mean “increased prices and a slowing of sales.” “The key is time for adjustment,” Bozzella said. “This is a massive industry.”Toyota is reevaluating its production strategy for the next-gen RAV4, exploring a shift to U.S. manufacturing as a hedge against 25% import tariffs and currency swings.Toyota sold over 475,000 RAV4s in the U.S. last year—its most popular model, making up 20% of its U.S. volume.Originally planned for export from Japan and Canada, U.S. production in Kentucky is now under serious consideration. The shift would help meet expected demand and mitigate tariff-related costs, with potential U.S. output beginning in 2027.While plans aren't final, Toyota noted it “continually studied ways to improve its manufacturing” but declined to confirm speculation.LiveWire, the electric spin-off from Harley-Davidson, is getting into the public service game with a new line of police-spec electric motorcycles. The new fleet includes emergency lighting, sirens, and reinforced mounts, tailored for urban patrol, motorcades, and event security.Benefits include low maintenance, silent operation, and instant torque—ideal for quick maneuvering through tight city traffic.Custom ride modes, regenerative braking, and one-handed operation aim to reduce officer fatigue and improve shift efficiency.Police departments can choose from a suite of configurations, reinforcing the model's flexibility in law enforcement roles.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

From the fabulous HEMI Hideout in Brookshire, Texas comes an automotive enthusiast's dream episode packed with car reviews, market insights, and plenty of automotive banter. We kick things off with a thorough examination of the 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, assembled right here in America at Georgetown, Kentucky. This small SUV delivers an impressive 41 mpg city while maintaining enough zip to keep driving enjoyable. With sporty handling reminiscent of more premium vehicles, it strikes a perfect balance between daily practicality and weekend adventure capability. At $37,560 for the base hybrid trim, it competes effectively against offerings from Hyundai, Honda, and Ford. The heart of our show features our beloved Hemmings Sold Car Roundup game, where we attempt to guess the actual selling prices of classic vehicles. The results were eye-opening – from a 1969 Chevelle commanding $73,500 to a pristine 1961 Ford Thunderbird selling for a surprisingly affordable $18,900. These market insights reveal which classics are appreciating and which might represent hidden value in today's collector market.Car owners won't want to miss our comprehensive recall roundup, covering everything from Ford's fuel injector issues to Tesla's problematic horn pads. We also explore automotive history milestones, including Chrysler's introduction of the legendary HEMI V8 in 1951 and Richard Petty's rise to NASCAR royalty.Perhaps most relevant to collectors is our discussion of the recent tariff announcement, which includes a crucial exemption for vehicles manufactured at least 25 years prior to import – welcome news for enthusiasts interested in classic international models.Join us for upcoming events including Tailpipes and Tacos at the Lupe' Tortilla on April 19th and follow our adventures on the Hot Rod Tour of Texas beginning April 24th. Driving Mitsubishi’s mid-size Outlander SUV today, the company’s best sellerand the second best selling mid-size SUV behind Toyota’s RAV4. I’m driving thetop spec 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol CVT automatic OutlanderExceed 4WD at $52,640. On first impression, a roomy plush interior - in fact itsinterior space gives the impression you’re driving a much larger SUV and you cansee why it is very popular with large families. And this is its best benefit over theRAV 4 the fact that it has seven seats. All three rows also offer climate control airwith separate controls in each. Although the third row is best sized for kids.Equipment comprehensive – a wireless phone charger, power tailgate. leatherseats with memory function up front, a head up display, 12.3-inch digitalinstrument cluster, pull up sun blinds for the second-row seats and 10-speakerBose sound. And don’t forget Mitsubishi’s 10-year/200,000km warranty, a realbuyer benefit. Servicing, every 12 months or 15,0000kms, the first five yearscosting a reasonable $1700. Towing average at 1600 kilos braked and here the2.5-litre four-cylinder would struggle with a heavy load. Good economy though –on 91 octane petrol I managed 8.7L/100. Five-star ANCAP safety. Toyota suggests Australia may have reached "peak ute," indicating a shift away from the popularity of utility vehicles like the HiLux and Ranger. The company anticipates that SUVs, especially hybrid models such as Toyota's own RAV4, could become the best-selling vehicle in Australia. Increased fragmentation in the ute market, with more models becoming available, will make it harder for one model to dominate sales. Changing family needs are also driving the shift, as some ute owners with growing families are finding SUVs to be more practical. This potential rise of SUVs signifies a fundamental shift in the Australian automotive market.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Shoot us a Text. The end of the year is finally here, and so we're looking back, covering the top 10 best-selling vehicles of 2024. Plus, we talk about a unique $0 down and $0 monthly payment Fiat lease as well as reflect on some of our most memorable moments.Show Notes with links:Hybrid electric-gas cars had a banner year in 2024, achieving record sales. With a shift in buyer demographics, these vehicles bridged the gap for consumers seeking efficiency and practicality without fully committing to electric vehicles.A shift from early adopters to budget-conscious shoppers drove hybrid demand. Many buyers appreciated the lower costs and simpler integration into daily life compared to EVs.Here are 2024's top 10 best-selling vehicles. 10. Chevy Equinox. 9. Honda Civic 8. Nissan Rogue 7. Toyota Camry 6. Toyota Corolla 5. Tesla Model Y (only true EV on the list) 4. Chevy Silverado 1500 3. Honda CR-V 2. Toyota RAV4 1. Ford F-150 (America's best-selling vehicle for 47 years, with 20% of buyers opting for the hybrid version)The top three all have hybrid options that did especially well this year, and about half of all RAV4 and CR-V sales are hybrids, according to Edmunds.“Hybrids this year became an extremely easy default decision for someone who doesn't want to go full electric but wants basically 70% or 80% of benefits” said Ivan Drury of Edmunds.Who says driving electric has to break the bank? A Fiat dealership in Colorado pulled off the seemingly impossible: a lease deal on the 2024 Fiat 500e that truly costs $0 down and $0 a month. The deal covers a 27-month term, 10,000 miles per year, with just $1,300 in state taxes and fees due upfront.Larry H. Miller Chrysler-Dodge-Ram-Fiat Denver moved over 60 cars in three days, using over $15,000 in federal and state incentives, plus factory discounts, to enable this unheard-of lease offer.Colorado's state incentives decrease in 2025, and federal EV credits are under scrutiny, meaning deals like this are less likely in the future.David Gluckman of Car & Driver leased one of the cars, and commented on the dealership's challenges with such a unique agreement: “I was warned, apologetically, that there was a chance I might have to re-sign some of the paperwork because the dealer's computer system didn't know how to handle a lease with no payment… A funny formality: They still had to run a credit check to confirm my ability to (not) pay.”As we close out the year, we look back at some of our most memorable moments. Toyota's stalwart mid-size truck entered a new generation with the 2024 model year. Entering its fourth generation, Toyota's popular Tacoma didn't carry along its V6 but did add a hybrid to its portfolio. While the 3.5-liter V6 was replaced with a series of turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder options, the manual transmission stuck with Taco's order sheet. If you don't want to spring for the six-speed manual transmission, an eight-speed automatic is effectively standard. Of course, the top-flight TRD Pro carries on, but Toyota also expanded its Tacoma offerings with an overlanding-focused Trailhunter model. Sitting across the lot from your would-be next pickup is Toyota's RAV4. The RAV4 entered its fifth generation in 2018 and saw a styling update only a few years ago. While it still might be approaching the end of its generational life, the RAV4 still manages to do what it's supposed to do: easily haul people and stuff. The perennial all-star on the sales charts, Toyota's RAV4 is spread through three powertrains, with a hybrid and plug-in hybrid available, as well as a traditional ICE powertrain. This ICE-only tester uses a 2.5-liter I4 to send 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. On this episode of Talking Cars with the Boss, host Wesley Wren chats with Natalie Neff about her time with the 2024 Toyota Tacoma and 2024 Toyota RAV4. The pair talk about the new Tacoma, Natalie's experience with it, and more. The pair also talk about the RAV4, its continued sales-chart dominance, and some minor gripes with the infotainment system. The two hosts also talk about Toyota's four-cylinder engine family, the departure of the Tacoma's V6, and more. Closing the show, the two decide which of these ‘Yotas they'd rather have in their driveway.
Electric vehicle sales may be currently on the wane however hybrid vehicle sales are enjoying boom conditions with 129,895 national sales in the first nine months, an increase of 87 percent on the same time last year. Petrol electric hybrid vehicles are clearly far more popular than plug-in hybrids which achieved 15,546 sales in the same period. Toyota which accounts for around 20 per cent of the total new vehicle market has had enormous success with its petrol/electric hybrid models which now represent around half its sales. Its RAV4 hybrid our top selling hybrid vehicle with 40,754 deliveries in the first nine months. Apart from the RAV4, Toyota now has five top selling petrol electric hybrids in Corolla, Camry, Kluger, Corolla Cross and Yaris Cross suggesting it has chosen the right sales strategy going forward. Shoot us a Text.Let's kick off the last week of the month with guest host Daniel Govaer as we celebrate Holman's century of automotive excellence, explore Toyota's bold hybrid-only strategy as EV demand shifts, and dive into surprising brand loyalty trends among Gen Z.Show Notes with links:Holman marks a century of automotive innovation and growth, celebrating its 100th anniversary on August 23rd. From a single Ford dealership founded by Steward C Holman in 1924 in New Jersey, Holman has evolved into one of the largest family-owned automotive services organizations worldwide. The company now operates over 59 dealerships across nine U.S. states and employs over 9,000 people globally, with a presence in the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and Mexico. They have expanded into various automotive services, including fleet management, commercial vehicle equipment manufacturing and powertrain distribution.Mindy Holman, Chair of the Board, emphasizes the company's commitment to its employees and customers. “As I reflect on this milestone, I'm incredibly grateful to our people... I know dad and granddad would be equally proud,”Toyota is doubling down on hybrids, with plans to potentially convert most of its Toyota and Lexus lineup to hybrid-only models. This bold move challenges the industry's push toward full electrification.Toyota may phase out gasoline-only models in the US, starting with the Camry and RAV4.The company aims for 50% of its U.S. sales to be hybrids by next year.Hybrids offer Toyota an edge in meeting strict U.S. emissions regulations.Toyota's hybrid sales surged 66% through June 2023, far outpacing its EV sales.Chairman Akio Toyoda has emphasized a "multi-pathway" strategy, including hybrids, EVs, and hydrogen."Going forward, we plan to evaluate, carline by carline, whether going all-hybrid makes sense," said David Christ, Head of Sales and Marketing for Toyota in North America.Despite common perceptions, Gen Z is proving to be highly loyal to brands. A recent survey by Medallia Market Research reveals that 61% of Gen Z shoppers consider themselves “forever customers,” outpacing Millennials (57%) and Boomers (43%).Most customers find loyalty after a positive interaction with the brand.Price is the top factor for respondents becoming "forever customers," followed by product quality. However, the majority of customers refuse to shop at a retailer after a bad experience.“We're witnessing a shift in brand loyalty dynamics, particularly among younger consumers,” says Medallia.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
