This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad is joined by co-host Chris Teague to deliver fresh road tests of the all-new 2027 Kia Telluride X-Line SX Prestige and the expanded 2026 Lexus RZ lineup. Looking at news and comment, they detail the latest on Hennessey's pure-analog hypercar, Genesis's first high-performance EV, and the end of the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Especially for car buyers — and industry observers — they outline the record trade-in equity owners currently enjoy while also explaining the ongoing decline in car leasing and what that means to car buyers. Our special guest Ezra Peterson, vice president of insurance and auto refinance at Way.com, also joins the show.
The fastest way to ruin a DIY weekend is getting careless under a car, so we start with something unglamorous but essential: car jacks. We break down what makes a dependable floor jack, why lift points and pinch weld support matter, and how different designs fit different real garages. If you've ever fought low ground clearance or wondered whether a combo bottle jack and jack stand is worth it, we give you a clear way to think about safety features, lift range, lever effort, and portability. Then we jump into new-car territory with a close look at the redesigned 2026 Toyota RAV4, including the GR Sport plug-in hybrid all-wheel drive. We talk styling updates, interior usability, cargo practicality, and the real benefit of electric-only miles when you can charge at home or work. We also get honest about price, trims, and the competing plug-in hybrid SUVs shoppers cross-shop most. For a change of pace, our driving destinations segment turns Houston's flood control system into a surprisingly fun tour: Addicks Reservoir, Barker Reservoir, Buffalo Bayou, Terry Hershey Park, and a big-picture view from the San Jacinto Monument. We wrap with quick automotive history highlights and a second review, the 2026 Lexus IS 350 F Sport, including its updated infotainment and a naturally aspirated V6 that feels refreshingly proven. If you like practical car advice, honest reviews, and road stories with real-world value, subscribe, share this with a fellow car person, and leave us a quick rating or review.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. James discusses the new Kia products seen at the New York Auto Show, as well as the redesigned Telluride midsize crossover. James also shares some insights regarding Kia's sales success in the U.S. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's "Muscle Car Engine" quiz. Is your daily driver riding so rough it's basically a vibration massage you didn't ask for? If your struts are creaking and your shocks are screaming “I'm tired, boss,” it's time to save your spine. In this episode of LTS Out of Office, Marcos goes full "suspension geek" to tackle the maintenance on his own family car—a 2018 RAV4—though the lessons here apply whether you're hauling kids in an SUV or tearing up the track in a coupe. Spurred by some unfiltered mechanical "truth bombs" from his father, Marcos navigates the winding road between bone-stock OEM reliability and the seductive allure of high-performance aftermarket upgrades. This isn't just a lecture; it's a deep dive into the engineering tug-of-war between "Safety" and "Swagger," giving you the blueprint to reclaim a smooth ride that handles like a dream whether it's raining, snowing, or 100 degrees out.#carmaintenance #rav4 #performanceupgrades #customcars #LTSnco #automotivepodcast SUPPORT THE PODCAST:

The move distances it even further from rivals like Tesla and Zoox.New highway service rolls out in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, initially for limited riders. This milestone extends Waymo's reach to San Jose and introduces airport pickups at San Jose International. The Waymo Driver has shown 91% fewer serious-injury crashes compared to human drivers.Waymo now operates over 2,500 vehicles and has logged more than 100 million driverless miles.“The Waymo Driver does not get tired, does not lose focus and does not make emotional decisions behind the wheel,” said project manager Jacopo Sannazzaro.OpenAI has rolled out GPT-5.1, calling it a smarter, more engaging upgrade to its August release of GPT-5—complete with expanded personality settings and model matching enhancements.GPT-5.1 includes “Instant” and “Thinking” variants, optimized for speed, clarity, and task persistence.New personality presets include Candid, Quirky, Nerdy, Cynical, and more, adding tone flexibility.Users will begin to see model auto-matching and personalization tools in settings. The upgrade follows user backlash to GPT-5 and competition from Anthropic powering Microsoft tools.“We're well past the point of one-size-fits-all,” said Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of Applications.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1159: Today we dig into how Ford and GM are stretching the $7,500 EV lease credit, why used EVs are suddenly flying off lots, and how ChatGPT just became a digital storefront. With the federal $7,500 EV lease incentive ending today, GM and Ford are using a strategic workaround to extend the benefit for customers—and keep EV momentum alive—into Q4.To skirt the deadline, both automakers' finance arms (GM Financial and Ford Credit) are pre-acquiring qualifying EVs and making down payments to preserve the lease credit.GM dealers must sign up by Sept. 30; Ford required dealer opt-in by Sept. 26.Ford is sweetening the pot with a $1,000 bonus to dealers for every EV leased under the program by year's end.IRS guidance allows the credit to apply if a vehicle is “acquired” via written contract and payment—even if not delivered until later. The workaround applies to Cadillac, Chevy, GMC EVs for GM, and select Ford EVs like the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning. With new EV incentives vanishing and prices still sky-high, the used electric vehicle market is having a moment. Once thought of as a luxury-only experiment, used EVs are now affordable, available, and—surprisingly—desirable.Sales of used EVs jumped 34% through June and used EV prices have fallen to near parity with gas cars, averaging $34,700 as of August and One buyer snagged a 2024 Mustang Mach-E GT for $33K—a 40% drop from last year's new sticker price.Three-year lease returns from 2022's EV boom are flooding the market with modern, tech-packed vehicles, and used EVs have a 36 day supply, compared to 42 for ICE cars.In some cases, used EVs are cheaper than their gas-powered siblings—like a Toyota bZ4X undercutting a RAV4 by $6,600.OpenAI just upgraded ChatGPT from chatbot to checkout lane. With the launch of Instant Checkout, U.S. users can now buy products directly inside a conversation—starting with Etsy and soon expanding to over a million Shopify merchants.Users ask for recommendations (e.g., “running shoes under $100”), tap “Buy,” confirm details, and check out—all without leaving the chat. The feature is powered by the new Agentic Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Stripe, and built to make AI a native part of the shopping experience.Payments use encrypted “Shared Payment Tokens” via Stripe, keeping buyer credentials safe while allowing instant, single-item purchases. OpenAI earns a small cut from each transaction.Etsy shares jumped 16% and Shopify rose 6% following the launch, signaling big market enthusiasm.0:00 Intro with Paul J Daly and Michael Cirillo0:31 Huge Launch Announcement Tomorrow at morethancars.com3:20 GM, Ford Financial Arms Acquire EVs To Capture Tax Credit6:35 Used EVs Reach Price Parity With Used IJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1106: Today we're looking at a U.S.-EU trade deal that gives European automakers some relief, Toyota's ambitious product roadmap with EVs and freshened favorites, and why Sam Altman says your ChatGPT chats aren't nearly as private as you think.Show Notes with links:European automakers got a breather as the U.S. and EU struck a long-awaited trade deal, dialing back tariff threats that had been weighing on the industry. The U.S. will apply a 15% tariff on EU goods, easing pressure from the previously targeted 25%.Stocks of German automakers like BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen initially surged on the news.Barclays analysts note the 15% rate is six times higher than pre-Trump levels. The EU may cut its 10% tariff on U.S. imports, benefiting BMW and Mercedes, which export U.S.-built models back to Europe.BMW and VW are also hoping for additional relief tied to U.S. investments.Barclays: “Logging in 15% tariffs as a run-rate will still represent a year-on-year headwind in 2026 versus 2025.”Toyota's next four years will be packed with new EVs, freshened best-sellers, and a surprising push to keep sedans relevant. The Highlander will go all-electric in 2025, following the new Grand Highlander.A three-row electric crossover (bZ5X) will launch from Kentucky late 2025.RAV4 redesign moves up to 2025 with new platform, safety, and infotainment upgrades.Toyota continues investing in sedans — Corolla freshens in 2025, Camry will be redesigned in 2028.A Compact Corolla-based pickup in development is set to rival Ford Maverick, expected in 2027.Akio Toyoda's GR Supra may end production in 2026, though emotions could keep it alive.Millions are sharing deeply personal issues with AI, but a surprising admission from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has lawyers — and plenty of everyday users — buzzing. He admitted last week that ChatGPT conversations don't carry the same confidentiality as talks with a lawyer, doctor, or therapist, raising big questions about privacy in the AI age.Altman: “We should have the same concept of privacy for your conversations with AI that we do with a therapist or whatever — and we haven't figured that out yet.”Legal experts warn that without privilege, user data could be subpoenaed if OpenAI stores it.OpenAI notes that with chat history off — especially on paid plans — data isn't saved or used for training.Enterprise-level ChatGPT offers encryption and compliance, but the free and Plus versions lack those safeguards.0:00 Intro with Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier1:43 Upcoming ASOTU Edge Webinar with CarRx2:20 US Trade Deal With EU Is 15% Tariffs4:30 Toyota's 4 Year Roadmap7:42 ChatGPT Doesn't Provide Legal ConfidentialJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

So the ebike is a brick in the back of my Rav4, but it still works like a normal bike, so let's keep going! But a sudden realization may provide the solution to unlock all the battery goodness, just as another stunning discovery makes me realize, this trip's Plan B was all meant to be. Lake Ontario 2025 - Part 3 Hotel pack-up & quick diagnosis Morning in Oswego, NY. Realizes the motor cut-off is just a loose brake-lever magnet. Simple electrical/duct-tape fix brings the e-bike back to life. Route planning & launch Scraps the closed Cape Vincent ferry idea decides to drive the east shore of Lake Ontario, scouting state parks and quieter wildlife areas instead of sticking to busy parks. Lake-side stops Quick visit to Black Pond Wildlife Management Area (too restricted for bikes). Heads north to Westcott Beach State Park for a short beach walk, photos, and a quick battery test run. Drive to Canada Long detour to the Thousand Islands bridge (the only open crossing) because the south-end Wolf Island ferry is closed. Smooth Canadian customs stop; grabs ice cream and activates a Canadian eSIM for data. Kingston → Wolf Island ferry Misses the boat by two cars; 80-minute wait becomes a snack-and-people-watch session. Free ferry ride over; hotel is literally a block from the dock. Marysville check-in Rustic ground-floor room, lake view, no A/C needed. Drops bags, scopes dinner options (hotel café). Evening e-bike shake-down 14-mile out-and-back along Route 95 to the shuttered U.S. ferry dock on the south tip. Cruises at ~20 mph, marvels at wind turbines, farmland scenery, and micro-climates. Confirms minimal battery draw and re-affirms “twice the speed, half the effort” mantra. Wrap-up reflections Happy the brake glitch happened early—it forced a car assist and avoided being stranded. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1049: Today we're diving into Toyota's bold software move with the redesigned RAV4 Hybrid, watching Tesla and Waymo duel for robotaxi dominance, and seeing how Home Depot is holding the line on prices as tariffs rattle retailShow Notes with links:Toyota's sixth-gen RAV4 Hybrid isn't just sleeker—it's smarter. As the first model to feature the all-new Arene operating system, the global bestseller is now a testbed for Toyota's software-first future.Arene is built by Woven by Toyota, the automaker's in-house software arm and made up of three core components: Arene SDK (to build apps and features), Arene Tools (to virtually test them), and Arene Data (to collect and use real-world driver feedback). In practice, that means Toyota can push OTA updates that improve safety systems like Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 based on global user data, often updating every few weeks or months, mirroring how smartphone OS updates roll out.The SDK powers the new voice agent and center display; the data system creates a feedback loop that improves regional performance by learning from users in 180 countries.“Software can be an added layer where we can evolve the car over time,” said Woven CTO John Absmeier. “We help your Toyota grow old with you.”Tesla and Waymo are tackling robotaxis from different angles—Tesla with bold camera-only tech, and Waymo with sensor-packed precision. But a real-world test in San Francisco handed one of them a clear win.Waymo's service, active since 2024, uses 29 cameras, 5 lidars, and 6 radars in Jaguar I-PACEs.Tesla's FSD Supervised software, tested in a Model 3, relies solely on eight external cameras—with its FSD Unsupervised version launching in Austin next month. On winding SF roads from Twin Peaks to Chase Center, both systems performed well—until Tesla's FSD ran a red light at a busy intersection. The Waymo delivered a confident, human-like ride, including a lane change that “seemed like it was just tired of waiting.”“It's got New York cab driver energy,” said tester Alistair Barr of Waymo's proactive driving style. As tariffs squeeze the retail sector, Home Depot is leaning into its U.S.-based supply chain and scale advantage to keep prices steady—even as competitors like Walmart warn of price hikes.Over half of Home Depot's inventory is sourced domestically, with imports on the decline.CFO Richard McPhail says no single foreign country will represent more than 10% of purchases within 12 months.Q1 2025 revenue rose 9.4% to $39.9B, with average transaction values ticking up slightly to $90.71.The company saw 394.8 million transactions, a 2.1% increase year-over-year.“We saw continued customer engagement across smaller projects,” said CEO Ted Decker.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1023: From tariff talk taking over the New York Auto Show to Toyota rethinking RAV4 production, and LiveWire's electric leap into law enforcement—we've got you covered.Show Notes with links:Automakers came to New York looking to celebrate new vehicles, but found themselves answering the same old questions—about tariffs. Despite flashy debuts and high-octane reveals, the weight of trade policy loomed over every conversation.Subaru U.S. chief Jeff Walters debuted the all-new Outback, only to field immediate questions about tariffs instead of the vehicle.Nissan embraced the tension with a tongue-in-cheek window decal reading “FREE from new tariffs” on its U.S.-built models. They also revealed plans to build 80% of U.S. inventory domestically, up from 50%, citing flexibility amid tariff volatility.Tariffs dominated nearly every conference panel, with one moderator finally pausing and saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, the bar is open.” It was 10 a.m.Our friend John Bozzella of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation called for more time and flexibility, warning that rushed tariff policy could mean “increased prices and a slowing of sales.” “The key is time for adjustment,” Bozzella said. “This is a massive industry.”Toyota is reevaluating its production strategy for the next-gen RAV4, exploring a shift to U.S. manufacturing as a hedge against 25% import tariffs and currency swings.Toyota sold over 475,000 RAV4s in the U.S. last year—its most popular model, making up 20% of its U.S. volume.Originally planned for export from Japan and Canada, U.S. production in Kentucky is now under serious consideration. The shift would help meet expected demand and mitigate tariff-related costs, with potential U.S. output beginning in 2027.While plans aren't final, Toyota noted it “continually studied ways to improve its manufacturing” but declined to confirm speculation.LiveWire, the electric spin-off from Harley-Davidson, is getting into the public service game with a new line of police-spec electric motorcycles. The new fleet includes emergency lighting, sirens, and reinforced mounts, tailored for urban patrol, motorcades, and event security.Benefits include low maintenance, silent operation, and instant torque—ideal for quick maneuvering through tight city traffic.Custom ride modes, regenerative braking, and one-handed operation aim to reduce officer fatigue and improve shift efficiency.Police departments can choose from a suite of configurations, reinforcing the model's flexibility in law enforcement roles.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
