When Joshua Gans and his co-authors released their book Prediction Machines in 2018, they were writing about a topic that seemed quite niche. At this time, machine learning was just starting out. In the last year, the speed at which artificial intelligence has advanced has surprised almost everyone. In this conversation, we hear how the analytical framework that he and his colleagues developed helps to sort through the hype. He argues artificial intelligence is best thought of as a prediction machine. You'll hear why he's optimistic that artificial intelligence will be able to help people remove some of the drudgery from some jobs, but at this time, doesn't seem likely to take over full jobs. He'll share how understanding artificial intelligence as an advance in predictive statistics will help leaders assess how artificial intelligence may or may not be useful. About our guest:Joshua Gans is a Professor of Strategic Management and holder of the Jeffrey S. But not Joshua Gans.Joshua Gans is a Professor of Strategic Management and holder of the Jeffrey S. Skoll Chair of Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto (with a cross-appointment in the Department of Economics). He is also Chief Economist of the University of Toronto's Creative Destruction Lab.Listen as we dive into all things pandemic today: COVID-19 as a disease vs a function of behavior, gauging risk, privacy laws, and the range of COVID testing options. “Epidemiology in many respects is closer to a social science than it is to a natural science.”Episode Quotes:On pandemic research within Economics:"Economists had looked at infectious diseases, most notably AIDS. There was some work done, but it was, to say it was a fringe would be almost an understatement. There was no work done on if we have a global pandemic, what is the optimal macroeconomic response? There was nothing there."On creating public policy during a pandemic:"Here's where it gets frustrating. Here are the scientists doing their business, coming up with various studies and, you know, critical facts. But at the same time, they've got to take that and it's got to go all the way to public policy. And in between, there is this lump of stuff they don't know about: social science. And so they make guesses."On the fundamental information problem of pandemics:"It took me a little while to come around to realize that this calamity was more solvable than people were saying. And it wasn't going to require necessarily vaccine and other things like that. If we could just get our head around it. But that turned out to be a non-obvious view to a lot of people. And it certainly wasn't the way in which health people that I was speaking to had talked about it. So it was more a uniquely economic strategy type approach. What is the fundamental problem here? And can we solve that?"Show Links:Joshua Gans WebsiteJoshua Gans Substack: Plugging The GapOrder Book:The Pandemic Information SolutionOrder Book:The Pandemic Information GapOrder Book: Prediction MachinesOrder Book: The Disruption Dilemma

In a slight departure from our normal format we are introducing a new technical innovation series where we will bring interviews from different inventors of technical innovation in cycling. On the Cycling Science Podcast we do not do simple endorsements or marketing of new cycling products products and we only interview people if they are doing something really innovative, breaking the mould or bringing something that is first to market. First we have Shokbox (www.shokbox.co.uk) invented by Martin Greene, this is a very interesting story where Martin recognised from personal experience that many of the bike boxes on the market had significant flaws and decided to do something about it. Martin tells us about the thought process that went into designing his new bike box by improving on all of the key important features that can be problematic in packing and transporting your bike in a bike box. For each of the new Technical Episodes I will post a longer article on the website www.cycling-science.com if you would like a bit more detail.

I first met Pete Armstrong as he was pitching at the Ecosummit event in Berlin in 2018 and last year. The scale of the impact possible in transforming our heating and water storage systems in our homes blew my mind. I’ve always been so involved in the ‘electrification of everything’, so I’ve watched since with interest. Mixergy were also mentioned in a recent podcast episode with Robert Trezona of IP Group, one of their early (and follow on) investors. So I thought I’d invite Dr Pete Armstrong to join us. About our guest Dr Pete Armstrong is CEO and co-founder of Mixergy, an Oxford University spin-out company which has brought to market a unique hot water tank. Pete completed his PhD on intelligent hot water tanks at Oxford Uni with fellow student and co-founder Ren Kang, before going on to win a Technical Innovation award within the 2013 Shell Eco-Marathon electric car competition, and a prize in a Climate KiC venture competition, which was the genesis of Mixergy in 2014. Mixergy has since received investment from IP Group, Oxford Science Innovation, Centrica Innovations and Foresight Williams to grow and develop the business. About Mixergy Mixergy has developed an intelligent hot water tank, which is unlike others on the market. The Mixergy tank operates on an integrated Internet of Things platform and is designed to selectively heat smaller portions of water. As a fleet, Mixergy aims to offer a Demand Side Response (DSR) service to the National Grid, absorbing excess power load and time shifting demand to help balance the grid. This “Internet of Tanks” vision will help to facilitate the generation and utilisation of more renewables nationwide to support a greener future. The Mixergy tank is also a benefit to consumers, saving up to 40% on hot water bills through sophisticated machine learning. In this episode of #AmeerApproved I sit down with Joshua Gans to talk about his new book INNOVATION + EQUALITY. All innovation entails uncertainty; there's no way to predict which new technologies will catch on. Therefore, rather than betting on the future of particular professions, we should consider policies that embrace uncertainty and protect people from unfavorable outcomes. To this end, they suggest policies that promote both innovation and equality. If we encourage innovation in the right way, our future can look more like the cheerful techno-utopia of Star Trek than the dark techno-dystopia of The Terminator. Every single day we learn new processes and develop new solutions that can help save us time and money. There are few people alive today that don't have smartphones or don't use some type of virtual assistant or smart device at either their home or workplace. Innovations in automation and smart design have permeated our entire culture rapidly. Who would have thought that five years ago there would be hundreds of thousands of Wi-Fi adapters that people could buy for $30 and install in their own home to control lights? That same convenience and untapped potential for growth is scaling all the way up to complete smart environments and their designs. Our guests today, Yiannis Cabolis and Andy Batwinas, Director of Technical Innovation and Design Supervisor at Electrosonic, come on the podcast to explain how these smart built designs and environments are driving unprecedented collaboration in the space, and putting more emphasis on the experience, for both the end-user and the AV professional. For the consumer, using this kind of design for immersive environments is giving them unparalleled experiences, from interactive museum exhibits to AR digital signage in retail. Cabolis and Batwinas explain their project at the Nature Research Center in Raleigh, NC, one that demanded unique designs for a plethora of media rich exhibits, a true multi-use space called the Daily Planet, and very specific video projection demands. With this project, Cabolis learned he had to go against the grain to deliver an experience-focused design for the end-user. "You need to know all the rules associated with any applications you design and only then one can know which one to break to create magic," Cabolis said. For the manufacturers, the experience-focused direction is bringing new collaboration to the industry, and a necessity for a deeper knowledge base around network efficiency. Since content is flowing in and out of the designs consistently, the equipment must be tested for functionality consistently during the installation process and periodically after deploymeny to ensure the scope of work has been included from the design. Beyond that, Cabolis and Batwinas explain how the designers and integrators on these smart built environment projects are being pushed to new creative heights, and how that's setting new standards within Pro AV. For more information on Electrosonic's work in smart environment design, what the biggest missed opportunities and pitfalls are, how to avoid the “Flavor of the Month” syndrome, and what their favorite project driven by “The Experience” has been, give this podcast a listen.
