This is a big deal because it shows they continue to scale topline at double digit growth. Advertising tier launching in November ($6.99 in US). 5 minutes of advertising per hour. As linear TV continues to die, advertising $'s will move to streaming. Netflix is charging top tier rates to advertisers. Netflix estimates all streaming competitors are losing money and combined losses are north of $10 billion. Why important? Because Netflix has reached critical mass and is generating $5-6 billion in annual operating profit. Very difficult to replicate! Free cash-flow over $1 billion in 2022 and materially larger in 2023. Netflix stock was 75% off its high. 一週財經聚焦 一、美國租車巨擘Hertz下訂10萬台Tesla，利多消息助攻下，Tesla股價飆破1,000美元，帶動市值突破1兆美元，Morgan Stanley隨即將其目標價格調升至1,200美元。該怎麼解讀這家疫情期間驚奇企業的過去、現在和未來？ 國際媒體相關報導 ●BBC：〈Tesla surpasses $1 trillion valuation after Hertz means〉(1兆美元的特斯拉，重新定義了汽車製造的意義) 分析解讀 Hertz宣佈向Tesla訂購10萬台電動車，這是電動車史上最大一筆訂單，合約價值逾40億美元，這大幅提振投資人對於電動車的信心，令特斯拉股價狂飆、市值突破1兆美元，也讓它成為了美國第五家躋身兆元俱樂部企業，與Big5的Apple、Amazon、MSFT、Google的母公司Alphabet齊名。 Elon Musk更是身家暴漲，個人財產淨值升至2,970億美元，超越Toyota整個公司的市值。但他也透露「市值因Hertz採購而攀高是奇怪的事」，因為「Tesla目前面臨的是產能提升而非需求問題。」可見資金追逐的不是它的財務表現，而是想像空間。 不過它的財務表現其實不錯。Tesla 預估2030年時每年電動車銷量上看810萬台，高於先前預測的580萬台，這意味著：該公司電動車銷量每年成長28％。特斯拉去年銷量約50萬台，今年推估交車90萬台。 除了銷量成績外，特斯拉的自駕軟體業務與保險、電池供應等服務，也讓它成為電動車業界「冠軍」。 回首來時路：2020年6月，Tesla才剛剛超越Toyota成為全球市值最大車廠，它的股價就一飛衝天；接著標準普爾（Standard＆ Poor's）於年底宣佈，將特斯拉納入S＆P 500的成分股之列。2021年1月7日，成為美國市值第5大上市企業，排在Facebook之前，僅次於蘋果、微軟、亞馬遜、Google母公司Alphabet之後。 曾經，長達數十年間，汽車市場、供應鏈架構基本上都是由Volkswagen、豐田、Ford、雙B這些傳統車廠主導；直到特斯拉在2003年成立、2008年Musk就任執行長之後，汽車業生態才有所改變，特斯拉也成為美國近90年來，唯一新興並實現量產的年輕汽車品牌。有別於傳統車廠在發展電動車時，是建立在燃油車生產經驗的基礎上，特斯拉的電動車是完全從零開始，既是挑戰，也是優勢。 特斯拉的崛起，除了與環保趨勢有關之外，科技創新也是重要原因。 首先是電池技術的突破。電動車的成本約3~4成，像是在2017年，特斯拉就與Panasonic（松下）合資在美國內華達州建造超級電池工廠（Gigafactory），開始生產密度更高、價格更便宜的鋰電池。 然而，目前特斯拉車輛使用的鋰電池，主要來自Panasonic、LG及寧德時代等業者，即使所有供應商都開出最大產能，特斯拉仍認為2022年將面臨嚴重的電池供貨短缺。 為此，特斯拉已著手研發和自產電池，在2020年起陸續遞交許多電池專利申請，包括降低成本，並讓電池更耐久的電解液添加劑，以及鎳鈷錳（NCA）電極合成、新型電池配置設計等技術。 其次是善用軟體服務，以及發表自家研發的自駕車晶片，並宣佈將全面導入新生產的車型。 而像FSD（Full Self Driving）這樣的軟體服務，也成為特斯拉的重要營收來源。特斯拉預計在2021年初，推出FSD訂閱制服務，有別於以往一次買斷的模式，訂閱制能讓更多車主以較低的門檻體驗FSD功能。 這樣的商業模式，有點類似蘋果（Apple）在銷售出iPhone、iPad等硬體設備後，再持續透過App Store中的軟體獲利。而且與銷售車輛、零組件這樣一次性的生意相比，軟體服務營收具有高持續性，毛利率也較高，預計可以在70％～80％左右。這也是特斯拉得以不斷降低整車售價的原因。 再看2020上半年表現最「戲劇化」的Tesla，誰會想到1年前還處於風雨飄搖、眾人看衰的它，隨著電池事業的獲利、上海廠的持續量產，以及中國內需市場的偏好，股價就這樣一路走高。它成功的原因，市場上各種說法都有，有人說電動車的政策補貼功不可沒，有人說上海超級工廠的快速完工；不過我認為，如同《倫敦金融時報》說的，投資人將Tesla視為科技股而不是傳統的汽車產業，這才是最關鍵的因素。 另外我也認為，所謂的「借力使力、有容乃大以及資本運作」這套組合拳，才是Elon Musk起死回生的關鍵所在。怎麼說呢？ 首先，中國願意幫Tesla，想當然爾是因為中國想引入Tesla，養大自己國內的電動車供應鏈。但事實上，從中國到全球各地甚至敵人，早已都是Tesla的借力對象，透過解決別人的痛點，Tesla成功地壯大了自己。 對敵人開放專利，則讓Tesla把有容乃大做到了極致。為什麼開放專利？因為Tesla認為，市場做大對先行的Tesla會更有利；更多的人加入，即使不靠賣車賺錢，也有機會靠充電站與電池技術成功獲利。 但真正重要的是，Tesla走出了一條與眾不同的資本運作道路。 很多人看不懂，Tesla為什麼能在資本市場獲得如此高的關注。Tesla和傳統車企的資本運作截然不同，傳統車廠講求穩固、追求長線，而Tesla的資本路線更像互聯網企業，以開放的姿態容納各方資本。而照單全收的資本構成，讓Tesla在不同的市場都能和各路資本綁定，形成了自己獨有的資本運作模式。 最重要的是，Tesla給我們描述的是一個不一樣的未來，這正是資本市場的最愛。在科技獨角獸掌握資本市場話語權的今天，大家可以允許企業現在的頹廢，但不能允許企業未來的渺茫。資本在Tesla身上越瘋狂，越能說明電動汽車的美好未來。資本替大家宣告了一個汽車新資本模式的到來。 如果從汽車製造層面表述，Tesla現在的市值就是一個巨大的泡沫，但從另外的角度分析，Covid-19製造出來的游資，早已讓金融市場與真實經濟脫鉤，全球資本市場現在什麼都不缺，就缺能夠追求的故事。很顯然地，在這個由電動車引領風騷的產業巨大革命中，誰能學會借力使力以及有容乃大，誰就能在下一個產業革命浪潮裡踏浪前行；誰擁有說故事的資本運作能力，誰就有機會備妥軍火、轉型成功。 最後，倫敦金融時報最近一篇文章，提及Tesla還有幾個與眾不同的地方。隨著COP26 的即將召開，我們也感受到了氣候變化的緊迫氣氛，而Tesla的為綠能時代而生，從能源轉型受惠最大。它也是政府補助的一大受惠者，2010年接受美國能源部一筆4.65億美元的貸款，至為關鍵。美國政府壓制耗油量大的內燃式引擎，也有助提高電動車銷售。 當然更重要的是，Musk是這家電動車企業的門面，也是鞭策公司不斷成長、創新的驅動力，這讓我想起最近在玉山科技峰會大出風頭的張忠謀。Musk暢談殖民火星、力挺加密幣、拋出在人腦植入晶片等新奇的想法，贏得一大票科技迷粉絲和散戶投資人崇拜。在他們的力挺下，Tesla股票一路扶搖直上不令人意外，也讓Tesla取得另一大與眾不同的競爭優勢：籌資能力。過去三年來，Tesla四度釋股籌資逾130億美元，在資本密集產業，以最低成本取得資本，大有助益。 然而，Tesla仍面臨諸多風險。 首先，Tesla本業畢竟是造車，和同業一樣遭遇晶片缺貨、全球供應鏈脆弱、美中衝突的挑戰，這些都可能嚴重打擊特斯拉。 此外，Tesla也日益受到主管當局放大檢視，自駕軟體尤其是關切焦點。馬斯克個人豪放不羈、常常信口開河的風格，也數度槓上美國證管會（SEC）。 目前為止，Tesla靠「與眾不同」而興起，但在競爭者急起直追，和公司規模日益擴大之際，如何維持這種優勢，是特斯拉今後面臨的挑戰。 二、COP26氣候峰會前夕10月30日，G 20領袖峰會將在羅馬舉行，眾所周知OECD推動的全球稅改方案，預計最快要在2023年上路。我們應該怎麼看這個變化？對台灣或台灣企業的影響又是什麼？ 國際媒體相關報導 ●CNN：〈Biden meets with Pope and Macron ahead of G20 summit〉(拜登在G20峰會前會見教皇和馬克宏) ●CNBC：〈G20 summit: Climate, COVID-19 and economy top agenda at Rome meet〉(G20 峰會：羅馬會議的氣候、COVID-19 和經濟首要議程) ●The Wall Street Journal華爾街日報：〈Corporate Taxes Poised to Rise After 136-Country Deal〉(在136個國家達成協議後，企業稅將增加) 分析解讀 這此稅制改革的重點，是聚焦於打擊跨國企業避稅，和終止稅務天堂所帶來的稅務紛爭。 根據「美國不平等政策研究所」與「美國公平稅收協會」的最新報告，正當新冠疫情肆虐全球，讓更多人成為新貧階級的同時，美國億萬富豪人數卻已經從疫情爆發前的614人，快速增至745人，他們的總財富更一舉突破5兆美元，財富淨值飆漲達70％。 更誇張的是，這些億萬富豪財富增速驚人，但逃稅、避稅的手法卻是各顯神通。根據pro publica今年6月公佈的報告顯示，金融巨鱷索羅斯已連續三年未繳聯邦所得稅；同樣的，亞馬遜的貝佐斯與特斯拉的Musk，也曾多年都避開所有聯邦所得稅的稅負。 其中的癥結，在於這些億萬富豪因投資股票而使財富大幅增值，但迄今卻不用繳交任何的資本利得稅。相形之下，一般大眾的固定薪資所得，卻一毛錢也逃不掉被扣繳薪資所得稅！ 終於，在OECD(國際經濟合作發展組織)的主導下，10月8日，包括愛爾蘭、愛沙尼亞與匈牙利都在最後一刻加入協議，總共136個國家的財政部長，達成「全球企業最低稅負」（Global Minimum Tax GMT）的協議，對年營業額超過7.5億歐元（8.66億美元）的大型跨國企業，課徵全球一致、15％的企業最低所得稅率。 這是全球企業發展史上極為重要的里程碑，將會扭轉從1980年至今、長達40年各國政府的「降稅競賽」。 因為在過去，各國政府為了吸引跨國企業，競相以營運中心、科創中心、或是其他各種名目，提供大型跨國企業優惠所得稅、甚至零所得稅，政府在所得稅優惠競賽中不斷調降實質企業所得稅，導致稅基流失。 長達40餘年的「降稅競賽」，將因為15%GMT的全球普遍施行而告一段落。而最積極提供低稅天堂優惠的愛爾蘭等國最終加入協議，成功杜絕了漏洞，確保了15%GMT成功的前提。 美國財政部長葉倫也表示，提出「確保疫後經濟復甦」、「氣候變遷與綠色經濟」以及「全球企業最低稅率」為當今全球政府與企業最重要的三大任務。 全球企業最低稅負制度的落實，在COVID疫情肆虐的此時特別具有意義。 以我們孰悉的莫德納、BNT等新冠疫苗公司為例，美國與歐盟政府為了快速發展與取得新冠疫苗，對這些製藥公司提供超過百億美元的研發補貼，以及昂貴的冷鏈流通網路補貼，然後再以金額超過2百億美元的政府預算購買疫苗。雖然最後以「免費疫苗」的名義提供國民施打，但是商業疫苗公司卻因此獲得巨額營收與利潤，數以千億美元計算的股價增值，則落入人數甚少的股東與經理人口袋；而美國、歐盟之外的國家，還得再花費鉅資購買疫苗。最終，商業疫苗公司還在專業會計師與律師的協助下，將巨額的利潤移轉在免稅、或者超低稅率的國家。 上述例子，政府對這些商業疫苗公司提供巨額財政補貼，稅金由全民負擔，舉債留給下個世代償還，股價增值利益被富有的股東攫取，而最終政府連企業所得稅都難以課徵……這是最鮮明的劫貧濟富、製造貧者愈貧、富者愈富的案例。 除了商業疫苗公司，谷歌、Netflix等科技巨頭的快速崛起，蓄積超越國家的政治、財政與社會影響力，早已經是眾人皆知、備受詬病的行為。歐洲政府原本規畫課徵數位稅（Digital Tax），以平衡跨國科技巨頭的力量，在拜登政府就任之後，財政部長葉倫積極遊說歐盟各國，改採全球最低企業稅負制，以136個國家集體行動來平衡科技巨頭的力量。這對於全球的經濟與社會安全，更是重要的突破。從這個角度來看，GMT的意義超越企業所得稅，而具有更高層次的經濟永續與社會安全價值。 136個國家集體完成GMT協議之後，接下來將在羅馬舉行的G20領袖峰會中確認此一協議，接著，各國會接續展開相應的所得稅制修法。領頭的美國拜登政府，必須面對陷入劇烈黨派鬥爭的國會，能否完成，現在還無從得知，不過，這是繼WTO之後最重要的全球政府一致行動，實質意義甚至超越CPTPP等跨國貿易協議。 回到台灣，全球稅改恐使台灣政府喪失部分課稅權，並導致台資企業被雙重課稅，尤其台灣非OECD成員國，確實值得我們注意。 全球稅改方案在獲得OECD包容性架構多數成員國的共識後，邁出一大步，但台灣因不是OECD會員國，無法參與OECD包容性架構。據瞭解，多年來台灣都積極爭取加入，但因架構公約規定，如果有課稅管轄領域隸屬另一領域，則需另一領域同意下才可以加入。從OECD的角度來看，台灣的參與必須先取得中國大陸的同意。 勤業眾信就表示，「全球利潤分配稅制」與「全球企業最低稅負制」這兩大支柱，顛覆了全球過去五十年基於常設機構建構的課稅原則，不再是企業設在哪就由哪國課稅。如果台灣無法參與，可能分不到錢。 以全球利潤分配稅制為例，只要企業合併營收達兩百億歐元（約台幣六千五百億元），無論在哪設點，只要利潤率超過10%，超過部分的25%將重新分配給貨物或服務的消費地課稅；各國能否分配到跨國企業的超額利潤，也訂有門檻。 目前來看，台積電最有可能被列入全球利潤分配制適用範圍。不具名會計師說，如果台灣無法參與包容性架構，達標的台資企業的超額利潤也會讓消費國課稅，但已在台灣繳的稅又無法扣抵，恐有雙重課稅的問題。 至於15%的全球企業最低稅負，按照我的估計，國內約有150個跨國企業集團受影響。但目前為止，台灣仍未看到有人討論這個議題，但我得呼籲，這是政府必須重視的問題。 《經濟學人》總評 這期談的當然是即將到來的COP26 締約國峰會，但經濟學人這次的封面設計，我感覺既逗趣卻又沈重。在所剩無幾的南極融冰上，我們看見三隻企鵝分別做著「非禮勿視」、「非禮勿聽」以及「非禮勿言」的動作。上面一個成語：「COP-out」(臨陣脫逃)，一語道破了經濟學人對這個氣候峰會的不抱希望。 主文的標題是：「Why Glasgow will be a disappointment. But the real king appears to be the Rimac Nevera, which is getting quarter-mile times in the 8-second range. - The company set its fastest time yet this week at Famoso Raceway. The company brought out Brooks Weiselblat of DragTimes to record and drive the car. As such the company has timing from the drag strip as well as VBox data from onboard the car. The fastest time recorded was 8.582 seconds at 167.51 mph. - Now, as it was a drag strip, the times were set with a VHT-prepped surface, which is sticky and good for launches. But the car was on production tires — Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires to be specific. Income-qualified county residents can receive a rebate as high as $3,700 for a plug-in hybrid and $4,000 for an EV. - Qualifying EVs are eight years old or newer with a pre-incentive purchase price of $25,000 or less. Every investor has exposure)Every single other company on the PLANET is now seriously discussing doing this.Like I said, I’ve been telling you that every company will eventually put BTC on the balance sheet.But this news virtually GUARANTEES that they are all talking about it, and talking about it seriously. Tesla ALREADY made more money simply by buying Bitcoin than they did by selling cars, ALL OF LAST YEAR. They are completely, 100% wrong and it’s not even funny. Sure, we might crash down to 70k this year (after reaching 300k+) in quarter 4.But that’s about the only thing I see happening, if I’m being honest. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to look at this one and make a decision. There are only 3-4 million Bitcoin available for sale.The rest are completely locked up, never being sold. In fact, 60% of ALL Bitcoin have never been moved in the past 12 months…Think about that…60% of the entire supply is just NOT FOR SALE.And now, you have every corporation literally in the World trying to buy some.You don’t have to be a genius to see what’s going to happen with the price.So, use it as your savings account.Don’t put off starting that business.You should do that, ASAP. A lot of people may be feeling regret right now - regret for not holding technology shares like Afterpay – it is up around 850% from the low in March Was not buying tech shares a bad decision? And is there potential from here? Look at this in this episode – Most people want to make the correct decision for investments – hard to know what is the correct decision - When looking at some sectors of the share markets - technology stocks in particular – might be having some regret for not investing But looking at these companies – the price may indicate that these are great companies Is it sensible or a bad idea to buy a company with a negative earning per share? Or a massive PE? There are plenty of shares in this basket - Afterpay – APT on a PE of minus 450x this year – technically doesn’t have a PE – but looking at the losses per share of $0.15 to $0.20 – looking at future projected earnings – in 2 years company would have a PE of 230x Xero - XRO on a PE of more than 1,000 times - 180x on 2022 forecasts Wisetech Global - WTC on 110x PE - and 50x on 2022 earnings forecasts NextDC - NXT on minus 305x PE and 231x 2022 forecasts – has a debt to equity of 100% List goes on – rate to find a company with a PE less than 70x in the tech basket In the US – The FAANG - Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN) 142PE, Apple (AAPL), Netflix (NFLX); and Google (GOOG) - stocks plus Microsoft account for 27% of the S&P 500 but only 8% of the revenue. The equity market in the US is valued at 152.2% of GDP - a record. Returns over the past 5 years – on the S&P500 – 78% of the gains have come from tech, telecommunication or e-commerce – around 50% comes from tech alone Also have other companies – like Tesla Tesla is up +330% since March 18th, and over +760% since June 2019 – remember back then it was troubled by bankruptcy concerns Since March, Tesla has added just over 8 Ford Motor Companies, 27 Renaults, or more than the entire market cap of Toyota ($176bn USD) Tesla is over 3 times the size of the “S&P 500 Automobiles and Parts” sector,even though it’s not a member or in the S&P 500 (it would be the 15th largest) Tesla’s market cap ($287bn) has grown to over a third of the combined market cap of the US, EU and Japanese auto indices. Where does Tesla rank compared to other auto companies – VW, Toyota, Daimler – top 3 – top two around 10.5m cars each year – TLS made 380k cars a year Tesla is at $280bn market cap – Tesla EPS -$0.81 = PE of negative 1,852 Toyota – has a EPS of $16.40 – PE of only around 7.5 times Tesla’s overall share of the global autos market has grown from 0.1% in 2017 to an expected 0.8% in 2020 – which is impressive - but remains minuscule - VW is at 14% - has a market cap of $82bn USD and pe of under 7 What is going on? It has become fairly obvious – it has little to do with fundamentals - PE, the future projected earnings or intrinsic value Most of the price growth has been about not missing out on getting into the big winners and household names – i.e. making easy gains Comes back to extraordinary volatility and getting into the massive momentum – the rebound in the markers that has been behind the opportunity to buy these growth companies in a world where rates are near zero logic suggests the equity market should be down the drain right now due to a global economic downturn Growth versus value shares – Since the market downturn – value shares have started to underperform March 2019 – Jan 20 – was about even – sitting at 100 of neither growth or value outperforming the other – since then growth has started to outperform – gone up from 100 to 145 – meaning that there is an out performance of 45% on growth shares compared to value This isn’t just coming from individuals getting in on household names Professional managers – The monthly Fund Manager Survey from Bank of America is best known for the monthly chart showing what everyone on Wall Street thinks is the most crowded trade Crowded is what is thought to be the top trade – or largest holding positions What was it this month - not only did it confirm that the one trade - is the most popular sector on Wall Street – but also – that it is also the fact that this trade has been made with the biggest margin on record – i.e. the largest amount No surprise that this trade is Long US tech stockswhich is what 74% of BofA survey respondents said they thought was the most crowded trade on Wall Street The sentiment on Wall Street at the moment – is that they are convinced that others like them who are finance professionals are all in on tech – backed up by the percentage of agreement behind tech being the most crowded trade is the highest of any monthly response in polling history Outside of shares – looking at the bond market – which is three times the size of the equity market – painting a different story US bond yields are at record lows and discounting negative rates from mid-2021 to 2023 despite the Fed saying they will resist that. The equity market is not reflecting the bond market. Record low bond yields are not consistent with a V-Shaped recovery – sign that the economy isn’t fairing so well Which market is right? Time will tell – no way to predict what markets are going to do in the short term with this momentum behind the tech sector But there is a disconnect – when looking at what the companies are worth versus to performance – technically performance is all that matters – or all that people care about Value only based investors have missed out on large returns recently because they are long-term and want to see "value" before they buy But These tech stocks are being traded as a bloc by the herd - they are all going up massively because the US technology sector is flying Also - the alternative traditional slow and steady investments in Australia are not sexy - consumers, Healthcare, Resources - Slow going by comparison – not what is in fashion right now technology it is – the global position for a quick return – which generates the price movements when everyone jumps in What to watch out for – but also are they overvalued? At this stage – who is happy with these price gains - the CEOs and shareholders of these companies are very happy – and also probably not going to openly admit that there is the chance that these companies are overvalued But can tell that they are rather happy – hence why they are raising capital (high prices per share) and why some of the insiders like the Afterpay guys are selling some shares All of this has the potential to fuel a further tech bubble - There are similarities to previous tech bubbles- but also differences Back in 2000 in the Tech Boom – there was a massive rise in prices and there was regrets about missed opportunity - but there are differences Compared to a lot of the companies in 2000 - This time there are some very substantial revenues in the tech sector – but the earnings and profits are mixed depending on the company Compared to back in 2000 – the profits were definitely lacking – but so were the revenues But now - when a company is real, and profitable, there is a price for everything – there is a growth potential, there are future profits and revenues – but there is still a price for everything For example – take Tesla – Tesla cars are great cars – come with teething issues – just like Tesla being a company with teething issues – but would you pay $2m for a Tesla car? This is how these shares currently are acting Compare this to property - You don't pay the eventual price for what a house price may be in a decade – prior to it even being built But the conditions of the market are different – the concept of the new normal Tech is seen as immune but also to benefit from Government shut downs The monetary system – tech growth companies do well with low interest rates - What to do? Unfortunately for most compelling argument for an 'investment' in these stocks is momentum - This is a herd phenomenon – and a powerful one – There is little in the way of fundamental reasons to invest – like earnings But the easy money from the Fed and the flow of capital has started a massive momentum If you hold them – there is the chance that they go up further – wouldn’t rush out to sell – looks like the ride is not over – yet Course of action would be to try and trade this rally – which is almost impossible to time correctly – But don’t consider it a long term ‘investment’ at the current prices Full disclosure – I do own an allocation to a lot of these companies – im not rushing out to reduce this – but at the same time – there is little that shows that they are worth buying at their current prices This bubble will likely burst - watch it – when – who knows – may not be years - Don’t sell because these stocks have gone up a lot It takes time for the market to trust a company and its value The market overprices assets regularly - this is occurring now - is a extreme sentiment – so if you don’t own any of these shares – may not be the time to join in – as downside seems to be far greater than the upside The contrarian saying of buying when others are fearful and selling when others are greedy But being a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian appears a losing position at this stage – seems like most of the market is indeed long tech stocks - A quick look at the hedge fund top 50 stocks shows that tech names account for 8 of the top 10 most popular stocks whatever works will continue to work until there is a reason for it not to work since the Fed is now effectively punishing growth stocks - the growth to value outperformance will continue until there are no more value investors left Something to watch out for – have the potential for much higher level of losses compared to other shares in the market But momentum can change – unlike other sectors – unlike that the momentum change will come from economic news – but rather mass profit taking in institutions Thank you for listening to today's episode. TESLA MODEL 3 SHOWS OFF ITS SPEED IN EXHILARATING SALT FLATS RUN Tesla Model 3 on Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. One of the most awesome experiences had in my Trinity! #Tesla @Tesla @elonmusk #Model3 @Model3Owners Michael Striker (@Michael7Striker) "Model 3’s batteries were not even fully charged when he conducted his high-speed run, and the vehicle was entirely stock with 18″ Aero Wheels" according to Teslarati: "According to Striker, however, he opted to pull back on the throttle when he reached 90 mph. The Model 3 Performance, according to Elon Musk, would be 15% faster than the BMW M3 on the track, with a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Tesla expects to start manufacturing the Model 3 Performance starting this July." ALL-ELECTRIC, 680-HORSEPOWER VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R TEST AT PIKES PEAK In the wee hours of the morning, The Drive was present for Volkswagen's onsite test of its electric Pikes Peak prototype race car. Romain Dumas is a three-time pikes peak winner and will be driving. The Drive reports: "Despite starting phase two of the day's testing on the upper half of the mountain without a full charge, Dumas maintained momentum through his first run on the upper half of the course, grappling with regenerative braking systems all the way." 13,000 PEOPLE EXPECTED TO ATTEND RENEWABLE ENERGY FAIR IN CUSTER About 13,000 people are expected to attend the Midwest Renewable Energy Fair in Custer this weekend. MREA executive director Nick Hylla: ""This is probably one of the most exciting things that's happened during my tenure here … the incredible growth in electric transportation and options that are out there. We'll have probably every variety of electric vehicle here on display, probably more than 100 vehicles." UPS PLACES ORDER FOR 950 WORKHORSE ELECTRIC DELIVERY TRUCKS com reports: "Shipping giant UPS said it will buy 950 electric delivery trucks from Workhorse Group in what looks to be a key order for the electric vehicle startup." "This tops an earlier UPS order for 50 of the trucks that was part of a test program. Workhorse describes the vehicles as Class 5 N-Gen electric vans. UPS and Workhorse collaborated on the design of the zero-emissions vehicle." says Trucks. "With 60-kilowatt-hour battery packs the N-Gen vans can travel up to 100 miles before they need to be recharged. The cost will be about $6 to travel 100 miles, which is significantly lower than the expense of fuel to run gas or diesel-powered trucks. The all-electric delivery vehicles will cost about the same as conventional trucks but will have a lower operational cost over their expected life because they will be less expensive to maintain, Hughes said. UPS would save about $170,000 a van compared with a similar diesel delivery truck if it kept the Workhorse vehicles for 20 years, their expected lifespan" POWER UTILITIES TO EARN $11 BILLION IN REVENUE WITH EV DEMAND Occasionally newspapers or those talking down EVs will put a story out there saying we'll face meltdown the moment someone plugs in their car and tries to make a coffee. Not only are most grid operators saying it's not an issue, a new report says they have a vested interest in making it work, as power shifts from oil forecourts to the power companies. The report also recommended that in order to meet the rising demand of charging stations, governments have to quickly facilitate standardisation of charging infrastructure and incentivise R&D for advanced charging technologies. MINI BOSS: GOING ELECTRIC IS A REAL CHALLENGE The boss of Mini says it's one of the hardest brands to switch to EV power because of it's small size. Peter Schwarzenbauer said: “Electrifying Mini is quite a challenge, chiefly because of the small footprint of the cars. “But if you look at the role of electrification in the urban environment and the desire to be local emissions-free, there is no other brand with the credentials of Mini. It should be a natural fit, and that is the direction we’re moving towards for the future. The success of the plug-in hybrid Countryman shows what can be achieved, and the full electric Mini that is coming will show another step.” Autocar report: "The BMW Group is known to be working on solid-state batteries in partnership with Toyota, with a sale date mooted to be around 2025. Both smaller and more powerful than today’s batteries, they could potentially pave the way for a range of fully electric Minis." COULD PANASONIC TRIPLE PRODUCTION OF EV BATTERIES Whilst some car makers who are catching up are having to get their batteries from wherever they can, Tesla get all their packs from Panasonic and that's not changing for a while yet. Tesla's target is to produce 5,000 Model 3s a week by the end of June. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk recently told analysts on the company's first-quarter results call: "We think we can get the cobalt to almost nothing." Tesla batteries use the NCA or lithium, nickel, cobalt and aluminium formula, while other car manufacturers have chosen to go with lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese (NCM) compounds" according to Channel News Asia: "Worries about cobalt shortages have prompted many to seek to alter the composition of the cathode part of the NCM battery to eight parts nickel, one part cobalt and one part manganese" ELECTRIFY AMERICA INVESTS $44 MILLION TO MAKE SACRAMENTO A 'GREEN CITY' As part of the settlement for #dieselgate, VW had to set up Electrify America, to build out a charging infrastructure and increase the adoption of EVs. And now we've just heard details of how investment in Sacramento, California, will bring a series of initiatives to the City. $44million will be spent on a 'Green City' plan. The first part of the plan is two new car sharing schemes and of course the vehicles will all be Zero Emission. By March 2019 you will be able to use Gig, an EV sharing scheme where you don't have to return the car to where you hired it from, but rather any designated parking space inside a 13-square mile area where they operate. You will be billed according to time or use or the distance travelled. CNET explains: "The other car sharing service is called Envoy, and it's a round-trip car-sharing service (more like ZipCar) where users book, then pick up and return the car to the same spot. Envoy will feature a fleet of 142 vehicles spread in pairs across 71 locations, and each vehicle will have a dedicated Level 2 EV charger." Electrify America will also be investing in 12 new electric buses to run from the University Of California. But what about EV charging for you and I? "There are plans to build out the region's electric vehicle charging infrastructure by adding 10 quick chargers capable of charging at 50-, 150- and 350-kilowatt. These charging stations will be open to the public, and part of the funding used to build them will also go to the charging infrastructure for both of the upcoming car-share programs and the electric bus service" according to CNET.
