Esto es un extracto de la Tertulia de AutoFM que se emite cada jueves en Onda Cero Alfa Romeo cambia de rumbo: abandona su promesa de electrificación total en 2027 En 2021, Alfa Romeo sorprendía al mundo del motor al anunciar que, para 2027, toda su gama sería 100% eléctrica. Sin embargo, en un giro inesperado, la firma italiana ha decidido romper su promesa y adoptar una nueva estrategia multienergía, que incluye vehículos de gasolina, híbridos enchufables (PHEV) y eléctricos. Este cambio responde a la caída de ventas y a la compleja situación del mercado de vehículos eléctricos, especialmente en Norteamérica. El mercado obliga a replantearse el futuro eléctrico La decisión fue anunciada por Christine ‘Chris' Feuell, directora regional de Alfa Romeo Norteamérica, en declaraciones a Automotive News. Según Feuell, la marca ha revisado su hoja de ruta tecnológica y de productos, concluyendo que una estrategia exclusivamente eléctrica no es sostenible, al menos en el corto plazo. “La sostenibilidad de nuestra red de concesionarios es prioritaria”, declaró Feuell, apuntando que mantener solo modelos eléctricos pondría en riesgo la viabilidad de los 110 concesionarios estadounidenses. La realidad de las ventas confirma estos temores. En 2024, las ventas de Alfa Romeo en Estados Unidos cayeron un 19%, alcanzando solo 8.865 unidades, el cuarto año consecutivo de descenso. La situación empeoró durante el cuarto trimestre del año, con una caída del 38% en comparación con el mismo periodo de 2023. La falta de interés por los coches eléctricos fuera de estados como California (que representa más de 1,2 millones de matriculaciones de eléctricos hasta septiembre de 2024) complica aún más la situación. Estados como Florida y Texas, con 254.000 y 200.000 coches eléctricos respectivamente, no ofrecen un mercado suficiente para justificar una gama 100% eléctrica. Factores políticos y estratégicos detrás del cambio El giro en la estrategia de Alfa Romeo no se debe solo a factores comerciales. La dimisión pactada de Carlos Tavares como CEO de Stellantis y la llegada del nuevo presidente de Estados Unidos, quien ha mostrado su intención de eliminar las políticas de incentivos a la compra de vehículos eléctricos, también han influido. Esta combinación de factores ha obligado a la marca a replantearse su enfoque. La cuestión ahora es si esta marcha atrás afectará solo a Estados Unidos o si también se extenderá a Europa. Aunque Alfa Romeo aún no ha confirmado oficialmente sus planes para el mercado europeo, hay indicios claros de que la diversificación de motorizaciones podría aplicarse también en el Viejo Continente. Jean-Philippe Imparato, exresponsable de Alfa Romeo, ya había insinuado que la marca podría mantener opciones de motorización tradicionales para satisfacer la demanda de los clientes europeos. La plataforma STLA Small y la flexibilidad mecánica de Stellantis El grupo Stellantis, propietario de Alfa Romeo, ha confirmado que su plataforma STLA Small, originalmente diseñada para utilitarios y compactos 100% eléctricos, podrá albergar motores híbridos. En concreto, se adaptará para incluir el motor 1.2 mild hybrid de 48V, que ya puede equipar el Alfa Romeo Junior junto con las versiones eléctricas. Las plantas españolas de Zaragoza y Vigo serán las primeras en producir coches con esta plataforma a partir de 2026. Este movimiento forma parte de una estrategia más amplia de Stellantis. Las nuevas plataformas STLA (Small, Medium, Large y Frame) ofrecerán flexibilidad mecánica, permitiendo la producción de vehículos eléctricos, híbridos enchufables (PHEV) e híbridos convencionales. “Esta gama de plataformas permite a Stellantis ofrecer soluciones adaptadas a una amplia variedad de escenarios de electrificación”, afirmó el grupo en un comunicado. Con esta decisión, Stellantis renuncia al objetivo de electrificación total que había marcado para la próxima década. ¿Qué futuro le espera a Alfa Romeo? El cambio de rumbo de Alfa Romeo refleja las dificultades del mercado automovilístico para adaptarse a las exigencias de la electrificación total en tan corto plazo. Aunque la transición hacia vehículos más sostenibles sigue siendo una prioridad, la realidad comercial y política ha obligado a la marca italiana a replantearse sus objetivos. Mientras tanto, la marca seguirá apostando por una gama variada que combine tradición y modernidad, ofreciendo modelos de gasolina, híbridos enchufables y eléctricos. Esta estrategia busca asegurar la supervivencia de la marca en un entorno competitivo y en constante cambio. El tiempo dirá si esta decisión permitirá a Alfa Romeo mantener su legado y adaptarse a las nuevas demandas del mercado.

ROMA (ITALPRESS) - Eletta Auto Europa 2025, Dacia Duster con la sua terza generazione ha rinnovato il successo delle precedenti edizioni, con 320 mila "dusteristi" solo nel nostro Paese. Totalmente rinnovato nella qualità, nel design, nei contenuti tecnologici e nel comfort, Duster rappresenta un'offerta quasi unica nel mercato. Un prodotto concreto, in grado di vivere le avventure di ogni giorno ma offrendo al contempo un costo di acquisto e gestione di riferimento nella categoria. Le nuove ed inedite motorizzazioni ibride, poi, ampliano ancor più la gamma di prodotto, permettendo di offrire ai clienti un SUV compatto ma anche moderno ed al passo coi tempi, ma sempre concreto, con un livello di tecnologia in linea con le esigenze degli automobilisti di oggi. In quest'ottica è arrivata la versione ibrida, la Hybrid 140 equipaggiata con un benzina 4 cilindri 1.6 litri e 94 cavalli, a cui si aggiungono un motore da 49 cavalli e uno starter/generatore ad alta tensione, gestiti da un cambio automatico elettrificato. Il tutto senza frizione. Grazie alla frenata rigenerativa, associata alla forte capacità di recupero energetico della batteria da 1,2 kWh e 230 Volt e al rendimento del cambio automatico, si potrà circolare in città fino all'80% del tempo in modalità elettrica, ridurre i consumi del 20% in ciclo misto e fino al 40% in ciclo urbano. Oltre alla versione ibrida è ora disponibile anche la TCe 130, una novità per il brand rumeno, che abbina un motore benzina turbo 3 cilindri da 1,2 litri di nuova generazione basato sul ciclo Miller a un sistema mild hybrid a 48V. Qui il cambio è manuale a 6 rapporti, sia per la versione a trazione anteriore che per la 4x4. Nuovo Duster TCe 130 4x4 si dimostra in grado di affrontare i passaggi più difficili. Leggero, compatto ma estremamente efficace anche in offroad. Ovviamente non poteva mancare uno dei cavalli di battaglia delle precedenti versioni Duster, la ECO-G 100 con alimentazione bifuel benzina-GPL, che consente un'autonomia fino a 1.400 km. Quattro le versioni disponibili: l'entry level Essential, la Espression, la Journey e la Extreme. I prezzi partono dai 19.900 euro della Essential, fino ai 27.900 della Journey Hybrid 140.gsl

En este episodio de AutoFM, hablamos sobre los ambiciosos planes de Mazda para el mercado europeo y global, y analizamos a fondo su nuevo SUV insignia: el Mazda CX-80. Mazda tiene un objetivo claro: alcanzar las 185.000 unidades vendidas al año en Europa y llegar a los 1,4 millones a nivel mundial. Uno de los pilares de esta estrategia es el CX-80, un modelo que destaca no solo por su tamaño, con 4,995 mm de longitud, sino especialmente por su batalla de 3.120 mm, que le otorga una habitabilidad sobresaliente. El CX-80 es esencialmente una versión alargada del Mazda CX-60, con 20 cm adicionales, de los cuales la mayor parte se refleja en la batalla. Ofrece configuraciones tanto de 6 como de 7 plazas, permitiendo opciones versátiles para los usuarios. Además, cuenta con un maletero que varía entre los 258 y 687 litros, dependiendo de la disposición de los asientos, y puede remolcar hasta 2.500 kg. El interior del CX-80 no pasa desapercibido, con lujosos detalles que buscan captar la atención de clientes de marcas premium como BMW o Audi. Entre sus características, destaca su enorme techo panorámico practicable, llantas de 20 pulgadas y una tercera zona de climatización para mayor confort en las plazas traseras. En cuanto a motorizaciones, Mazda ofrece dos opciones para el CX-80. Por un lado, un motor diésel de 6 cilindros y 3,3 litros con tecnología híbrida ligera de 48V y 254 CV; por otro, un híbrido enchufable con batería de 17,8 kWh y una potencia combinada de 327 CV. Se espera que el 63% de las ventas sean de la versión diésel. El SUV estará disponible en tres acabados: Exclusive Line, Homura y Takumi, con precios que oscilan entre los 60.444 y los 73.128 euros. Además, cuenta con una suspensión específica que, a pesar de su tamaño, mejora el confort y la precisión al volante. Mazda también está apostando por el servicio al cliente a través del concepto japonés Omotenashi, que refleja calidez y hospitalidad. Para generar más confianza, la marca ha lanzado el Programa de Confianza Mazda, que permite a los clientes devolver el coche en un plazo de 30 días o antes de los 1.000 kilómetros. En España, Mazda ha logrado un crecimiento del 7% en ventas entre enero y agosto, con 10.691 unidades vendidas. El objetivo para 2024 es llegar a las 18.000 unidades. Peugeot has announced details and pricing on a new 3008 SUV line-up due earlynext year. The mid-sized Peugeot 3008 will arrive with a new mild hybridpowertrain, replacing the current petrol and plug-in hybrid models. Initiallyarriving in Allure Hybrid and GT Premium grades with a mid-range GT Hybridvariant later. Entry pricing will jump by $2,915, now starting at $52,990 plus on-road costs with the GT Premium rising by $1,600 to $64,990. Toyota amplía su gama de vehículos comerciales en Europa con la Proace, Proace City y la nueva Proace Max, su primera furgoneta de gran tamaño. En 2023, la marca vendió 10,000 unidades en España, y tiene como objetivo alcanzar 20,000 unidades para 2027. Ofrecen una garantía de hasta 15 años o 250,000 km, ampliable con cada mantenimiento (la garantía estándar es de 3 años o 100,000 km). Además, Toyota ofrece un servicio exprés que realiza el mantenimiento en 1.5 horas. La Proace Max se fabrica en versión eléctrica en la planta de Stellantis en Gliwice, Polonia, y en versión diésel en Atessa, Italia. La versión eléctrica tiene una autonomía de 420 km, con una capacidad de carga neta de 1,500 kg y un remolque de hasta 2,400 kg. Está equipada con un motor de 200 kW (270 CV) y una batería de 110 kWh que se carga al 80% en 55 minutos a 150 kW. En diésel, ofrece opciones de 120, 140 o 180 CV. Tiene configuraciones de altura de entre 2,2 y 2,7 metros, y longitudes de entre 5,4 y 6,3 metros, con una capacidad de carga de entre 10 y 17 metros cúbicos. La Proace incluye una pantalla de 10 pulgadas con conectividad Apple CarPlay y Android Auto, mejoras en el diseño frontal y mayor seguridad con airbags laterales. La versión de pasajeros es la Proace Verso. Tiene una altura de 1,9 metros, longitudes de 4,9 o 5,3 metros, con una capacidad de carga neta de 1,400 kg y un remolque de hasta 2,500 kg. La versión eléctrica ofrece un motor de 136 CV con baterías de 75 kWh (autonomía de 350 km) o 50 kWh. Las opciones diésel incluyen motores de 2.0 L con 145 CV o 1.5 L con 120 CV. La Proace City ha sido renovada con un nuevo frontal. La versión para pasajeros, Proace City Verso, tiene capacidad para siete personas. La versión eléctrica tiene un motor de 136 CV con una autonomía de 330 km, una capacidad de carga neta de 780 kg, y una batería de 50 kWh que se carga al 80% en 30 minutos. También está disponible con motor diésel de 1.5 L con 100 o 130 CV, y una capacidad de carga neta de 1,000 kg. Finalmente, la Toyota Hilux incorporará en 2025 una nueva versión mild hybrid de 48V, que aporta 12 kW y 65 Nm adicionales de par motor. El Suzuki Vitara ha recibido un restyling con algunos cambios estéticos y de equipamiento. La actualización, disponible en concesionarios desde junio de 2024, presenta modificaciones en la calandra, los faros y el paragolpes delantero. En la parte trasera, el spoiler ha sido rediseñado y ahora parte del pilar, mientras que las llantas laterales también han sido actualizadas. Las dimensiones del Vitara se mantienen en 4,18 metros, con un ligero incremento debido a los nuevos paragolpes. El maletero tiene una capacidad de 362 litros. En cuanto al interior, la pantalla táctil ha crecido de 7 a 9 pulgadas y ahora incluye compatibilidad con Apple CarPlay y Android Auto, además de ofrecer carga inalámbrica para smartphones. Otra novedad importante es la incorporación de la aplicación de coche conectado de Suzuki, que permite localizar el vehículo y gestionar su mantenimiento, y que será gratuita durante los primeros tres años. Las mejoras en seguridad incluyen nuevas funciones como el asistente de mantenimiento en carril y el sistema de monitorización del conductor. El sistema AllGrip, que incluye control de descensos y cuatro modos de conducción, sigue estando disponible. Además, el Vitara ahora ofrece 10 colores diferentes, algunos de ellos nuevos. El Vitara estará disponible en tres acabados: S1, S2 y S3. El motor principal es un 1.4T de 129 CV con sistema mhev de 48V y transmisión manual de 6 velocidades. También se ofrece un motor 1.5 full hybrid con 102 CV y un sistema eléctrico de 24,6 kW, disponible solo bajo pedido y orientado a las ventas de flotas, con transmisión automática de 6 velocidades y un acabado básico S1 sin elevalunas traseros. En términos de precios, el Vitara 1.4T micro híbrido comienza desde 24.500 euros con descuentos, que pueden reducirse en otros 1.500 euros si se financia. El modelo 4x4 sube a 27.560 euros. El motor 1.5 full hybrid tiene un precio inicial de 28.390 euros, y el modelo 4x4 parte de 31.260 euros. Todos los modelos vienen con una garantía de 5 años, ampliable a 10 años sin coste adicional si se realizan los mantenimientos en Suzuki. El Suzuki S-Cross, aunque no ha cambiado significativamente en diseño, ahora incorpora todas las mejoras mencionadas para el Vitara, incluyendo los mismos motores y acabados. El precio del S-Cross con motor 1.4T micro híbrido parte de 26.795 euros, mientras que la versión 4x4 comienza en 30.460 euros. El S-Cross con motor 1.5 full hybrid tiene un precio inicial de 31.060 euros, con la versión 4x4 a partir de 32.800 euros. Te presentamos el nuevo BMW X3 de la mano del jefe de prensa de BMW España, Borja Hormigos. Ya hemos conocido la cuarta generación del BMW X3. Ahora con una parrilla frontal más grande y un tamaño ligeramente mayor que su predecesor, lo que mejora el espacio interior. Esta nueva generación ofrecerá motores de gasolina y diésel, todos con microhibridación a 48V, y una versión totalmente eléctrica denominada iX3. Las variantes híbridas enchufables tendrán una autonomía eléctrica superior a los 100 km. El interior contará con una pantalla curvada que integra el sistema de instrumentación y multimedia, y controles táctiles para la climatización y las salidas de aire. Las pruebas incluyen ensayos en condiciones extremas, desde el desierto del Kalahari hasta el Círculo Polar Ártico, para asegurar la fiabilidad de todos los componentes. La variante M50 xDrive M Performance destaca por su carácter deportivo y capacidad de adaptación en diferentes modos de conducción. Se espera que las primeras unidades estén disponibles en los concesionarios a finales de año. Grazie agli ecoincentivi nel nostro Paese il listino scende a 20.900 euro per l'ibrido e a 22.900 euro per la full electric versione base. Con il motore elettrico da 156 cavalli e la batteria da 51 kWh l'autonomia arriva a 403 chilometri, che diventano più di 500 nel ciclo urbano. La versione ibrida è invece alimentata da un motore da 1.200 (milledue), 3 cilindri e 100 cavalli di potenza abbinato a una tecnologia ibrida a 48V, che consente di arrivare a una velocità massima di 190 km/h, e passare da 0 a 100 in 9 secondi. This week's EYE ON NPI is a part of a balanced breakfast, wait no we mean a balanced battery pack! It's STMicroelectronics' AEK-POW-BMS63EN Battery Management System Module (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/aek-pow-bms63en-battery-management-system-module) featuring the L9963E automotive multicell battery monitoring and balancing IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/q4jw21t1). This chip brings automotive-grade battery management to any product designer, at a great price, so you can keep your batteries monitored and balanced for a safe and long usage life. All cars have batteries, and if you have a internal combustion engine car, you're probably familiar with the 12V lead acid battery (https://www.diehard.com/vehicle-batteries/) that needs replacing every 5-10 years, these batteries do not power the moving car itself, just the lights, stereo, electrical system and the spark plugs needed to get the engine running. These batteries are pretty simple, there are two big lugs, a ground and a +12V, inside is 6 series Lead Acid cells, of 2V nominal each. The battery is charged by the engine, and while you don't want to over or under-charge lead-acid batteries are pretty forgiving. In EV electric vehicles, the batteries have to have much higher energy density (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density) so they use Lithium Ion cells, often '18650' cylindrical cells. These are connected in long series strings, to provide high voltages and then parallelized to give high currents. The same batteries are also used in e-scooters, e-skateboards and other micro-mobility devices, they're very low cost, and packs are easy to make. BUT, Lithium-based batteries, as part of the high energy density, have a lower life and are more sensitive to charge and discharge cycles. One of the things we have to worry about is keeping the batteries balanced. That means that we have to monitor each cell in the string carefully to make sure the state of charge matches the rest. The ST L9963E does this in two ways (https://www.digikey.com/short/q4jw21t1), first is per-cell voltage monitoring, and also per-string current monitoring. Once each cell's state of charge is known, internal or external FETs can be used to shunt current from each cell during the charge cycle, with the goal of bringing the cells back into balance at the cost of charge rate because now we're going to charge every cell as slow as the 'worst' cell. However, this keeps the system safe from overcharging, and is a lot less expensive/complex than active balancing. Since this chip is fairly complex, having a ready-to-go eval board that is already set up with the isolated SPI interface is a worthy investment. You can get started fast and just integrate the AEK-POW-BMS63EN directly into your prototype while you work out your battery management system. The board has USB-like ports on either side but these are actually two-wire isolated SPI, which protects your low-voltage microcontroller or computer from possibly getting zapped by the 48V+ battery. You can use USB A-A cables, since the pinout will work fine, but just be aware you can't plug it into your computer. To connect the opposite side to your micro, you'll also need to pick up a de-isolator AEK-COM-ISOSPI1 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/AEK-COM-ISOSPI1/19721659). Finally you'll need to write the SPI interface library for managing the battery. We found one published L9963E library that might get you started (https://github.com/squadracorsepolito/L9963E_lib) - written by the Squadra Corse student Formula SAE teams. This week's EYE ON NPI is switching it up, with a look at some high-voltage-capable analog switches - Texas Instruments' TMUX821x Flat RON SPST 4-Channel Switches (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/texas-instruments/tmux821x-flat-ron-spst-4-channel-switches). A simple and effective way to switch and control up to 4 x 100V connections with up to 200mA each from any microcontroller or microcomputer. We carry dozens of different switches (https://www.adafruit.com/category/759), and DigiKey stocks easily 50K different switch configurations (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/result?s=N4IgTCBcDaIM4HcCWAXAxgCxAXQL5A0) from push-buttons (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/pushbutton-switches/199) to toggles (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/toggle-switches/201) but all of these require a person to push the button mechanically, whereas the TMUX series will connect and disconnect based on a separate digital signal, as low as 1.8V and as high as 48V. These are often used for switch audio or video, but are also often used in sensor measurement or test equipment. They're not good for power supply switching, and for digital signals there's often other ways of moving signals around, although they are sometimes used for the data lines of bidirectional digital signaling systems like USB. Like mechanical switches, the TI TMUX family of analog switches are 'bidirectional' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9GRiYPq7LM) - that means you can pass signal from A to B or from B to A. However, unlike mechanical switches there is no, well, mechanical connection. Instead, the switches are created by putting an N-FET and P-FET back-to-back. This means that there is no switch-bounce (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switch#Contact_bounce) or contact oxidation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_contact). Analog switches are pretty magical, and solve design problems that involve moving an analog signal around without having to hand-build a switch on board, but there are a few things to watch out for when 'modeling' how an analog switch varies from a mechanical one! First up, analog switches have fairly low 'Ron' resistance when the analog switch connection is made - on the order of a few ohms - and that is much higher than a mechanical switch. There is also 'very very high resistance, but not an open-circuit' when the analog switch connection is broken - on the order of a few hundred mega-ohms. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9EklrCrgH8) And don't forget you will need to have positive and negative power supplies beyond the voltages switched. So, if you are trying to switch 24Vpp signal, that ranges from -12V to +12V, you will need to supply them on the VDD and VSS lines. Also these are not electrically isolated, so add a separate opto/digital isolation (https://www.ti.com/isolation/digital-isolators/overview.html) circuitry if you want to keep your microcontroller fully disconnected from any high voltages. But compared to classic jellybean analog switches like the CD4066 ,(https://www.digikey.com/short/jw44n87t) the TI TMUX series of analog switches have improved circuit protections that will keep you from popping your chips (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTPHjhjUl0E) by accident - especially since this series can be used with up to 100V. Check the datasheet for all details, but highlights include: built in pull-down resistors, protection against over/undervoltage as well as out-of-order voltage application, and latch-up immunity. If you live near any density of folks, and in a place with well-paved roads, you've certainly noticed the increase in e-Bikes, e-Scooters, mono-wheels and other electric 'person-movers'. In NYC we've seen these go from banned to bountiful, as COVID restrictions made food and grocery delivery a bigger business than ever (https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/01/a-simple-solution-for-getting-cars-off-the-road-right-now.html). They're also popular in lots of countries where folks may not be able to afford cars, motorcycles or even mopeds: an entry-level E-Bike can go for $1000 to $3000 - which is a lot of money but much less expensive than a car. Plus you don't have to pay for gas or parking, you can lock it up outside or in your yard and charge it over a 120V power plug. But, about that charging setup ... these light vehicles (https://www.infineon.com/cms/en/applications/automotive/light-vehicles/) use very big batteries: a common 48V 250 Watt-hours is 26 18650 sized batteries connected in series - with extremely high discharge pulses necessary if you want to haul around a 75 lb bicycle plus a 200 lb cargo of human plus groceries. Also important is the ability to charge quickly. EYE on NPI: Skyworks Si3404 and Si3406x Power over Ethernet (PoE) Powered Device Chips

This week's EYE ON NPI is an EYE in the SKY, as we're featuring our first NPI from Skyworks: the Skyworks Si3404 and Si3406x Power over Ethernet [PoE] Powered Device Chips (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/silicon-laboratories/si3404-and-si3406x-power-over-ethernet-powered-device-chips). PoE is a standard, supported by many Ethernet hubs and switches (https://www.tp-link.com/us/solution/poe/) that allows a device connected to the hub to request +48V power over some of the Ethernet lines in Cat-5 cabling. Since many devices need Ethernet for speed and reliability - cameras, phone systems, printers, standalone monitors, and door entry systems, for example - you only need a single cable. These chips, originally from Silicon Labs and now made and sold by Skyworks, allow product designers to quickly add PoE support to their Ethernet products, saving space, complexity and wiring because a separate power supply is no longer needed.e First up, if you're wondering: "wow Skyworks, where have I seen that name before?" That's right! It was the California fabrication facility (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Such_Great_Heights#Music_video) where The Postal Service's Such Great Heights video was shot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wrsZog8qXg). The original video even featured the Skyworks logos on the chips - now it's blurred out. But that's a great excuse for us to mention that there's a Postal Service/Death Cab 20th Anniversary Tour this fall and we are definitely getting tickets (https://giveuptransatlanticismtour.com/). But back to PoE chips! We watched a discussion video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEhbVpYFvk0) about the history of this chip line, we were struck by the observation that the reason PoE is so popular for office buildings is that it's very disruptive and expensive to get electricians to run power outlets everywhere. But running Ethernet can be done by the IT department because the voltages are so low that no special licensing or permitting is needed. Ethernet can be run behind drywall, around door frames, or under drop floors without worrying about electrocution or fire hazards. And you don't have to worry about DC plug adapters or voltage mismatches. The Si3404 can provide up to 13W (https://www.digikey.com/short/49dqqh9m), the Si3406 can do 25W (https://www.digikey.com/short/35jn99tc) but are otherwise very similar. Other than a few passives and full-wave bridge rectifiers, you only need the flyback inductor-transformer (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/switching-converter-smps-transformers/168) - for isolated setups, it's a little more complicated. The Si3404 can also perform as a non-isolated buck converter for very small and low cost designs. The output voltage is set by a simple feedback resistor divider. Designs are compact, less than 1 square inch, for most use cases. Both the Skyworks Si3404 (https://www.digikey.com/short/49dqqh9m) and Si3406 (https://www.digikey.com/short/35jn99tc) are in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment. Cuántas más válvulas mejor. ¿Seguro? ¿Sabes que ha habido motores de 2, 3, 4, 5 y hasta 8 válvulas por cilindro? ¿Sabes cómo funcionan? Y, sobre todo, ¿sabes porque son mejores? Hoy toca técnica y “Mesa hermética”. Si crees que este vídeo es de muy poco nivel para ti, no te equivoques: Hablaremos del sistema VTEC de Honda, de la distribución variable, de las válvulas rellenas de sodio, de la estructura de una culata, de la distribución desmodrómica… yo creo que habrá nivel… El primer 16v de la historia fue el Peugeot L76 del Gran Premio de 1912 que montaba una culata de 16 válvulas con la cual conseguía un rendimiento impresionante: casi 150 CV de un motor de 7,6 litros… Pero en los años 80, primero a la sombra del turbo, esta técnica comienza a desarrollarse, especialmente en coches de competición. Se habla de 16 válvulas, aunque en realidad habría que hablar de 4 válvulas por cilindro. Pero como la mayor parte de los motores son de 4 cilindros, pues es fácil 4x4=16 y ahí se acuñó el término. Y, como en el caso del turbo, muchos coches presumían de ello con el famoso cartelito de 16V o 16S en el caso de los modelos franceses, porque en francés “válvula” se dice “soupapes”, que suena casi igual que sopapo… También se veían cartelitos de 24V, 32V o 48V en motores de 6, 8 o 12 cilindros, pero la cifra “redonda” eran las 16V, sobre todo porque el mito, el VW Golf, utilizó esta tecnología para potenciar su motor, eludiendo el turbo que en su momento tenía cierta mala fama de “mal carácter”. Seamos honestos, una fama justa. Hoy día la tecnología multiválvulas coexiste con la sobrealimentación… pero ya casi nadie presume de ello… salvo Porsche, que se ha adueñado de la palabra Turbo, más bien diría del concepto: Todo el mundo sabe que todos los Porsche corren mucho, pero los Porsche Turbo, sea cual sea el modelo, más todavía. Incluso hay un Taycan eléctrico con apellido “Turbo”… Para saber por qué son mejores 16 válvulas que 8, hay que saber cómo funciona un motor. Seguro que todos lo sabéis, pero no está de más repasarlo y, sobre todo, centrarnos en la distribución, es decir, las válvulas y todo lo necesario para que funcionen: Arboles de levas, taqués, balancines y correa o cadena de distribución. ¡Vamos a ello! ¿Cómo funciona un motor? Sencillo: Metes aire en un cilindro, lo comprimes, lo inflamas con una chispa y luego expulsas los gases quemados para volver a comenzar. Pero hay detalles que tienes que ver en nuestra Mesa hermética. Os explico los 4 tiempos, pero para preguntaros una cosa: ¿Cómo conseguimos más potencia de un motor? Sólo hay dos vías: Uno, conseguir que la explosión o la combustión si es un Diesel sea lo más eficiente posible, un tema que trataremos en otra ocasión; y, dos, conseguir quemar más gasolina. Y para conseguir quemar más gasolina hay dos formas: Hacer el motor más grande, con cilindros más grandes cabe más gasolina o meter más aire y combustible en el motor. Como funcionan las válvulas. Las válvulas tienen forma de seta, cerradas deben ser completamente estacas y abiertas permitir la mejor salida o entrada de gases. Esto, la “alzada” y como se mueven las válvulas y otros sistemas de distribución lo vemos en nuestra “Mesa Hermética”. Y os cuento como la la distribución variable, el VTEC de Honda y algunas otras cosas. La “respiración” de un motor. Para conseguir que un motor respire mejor, es decir, tenga más fácil introducir el aire en los cilindros y luego sacarlo, cuantos más “agujeros” tenga la culata y más grandes, pues mejor. Lo normal en los comienzos del automóvil fue poner dos válvulas por cilindro, pero luego se vio que con más válvulas se aprovechaba mejor la superficie de la culata… pero esto lo vemos mejor en nuestra “Mesa hermética”. Lo suyo es que en el centro o lo más al centro posible, este la bujía y-o el inyector. Y tratar de aprovechar la superficie al máximo con culatas de 2, 3, 4 y 5 válvulas. Lo cinco válvulas son una excepción, pero no compensa su complejidad. Y decíamos que los cilindros y pistones son siempre redondos, bueno casi siempre, porque hubo una sonada excepción… la Honda NR500 y sus cilindros ovales de 8 válvulas. Las válvulas de admisión y escape no son iguales ni de tamaño ni de composición, porque las de escape trabajan a mayor temperatura. Por eso hay válvulas de escape huecas, ¿por qué? Porque va rellena de sodio para refrigerar… Algún día… … todos los coches se fabricarán así. Esta frase la podían haber dicho los diseñadores del Peugeot de 1912 o del Triumph Dolomite Sprint, el primer coche fabricado en serie con esta tecnología. Nadie la dijo… pero es la verdad. Prácticamente todos los motores modernos de un cierto nivel de prestaciones usan la tecnología multiválvulas y los taqués hidráulicos. Al principio los motores multiválvulas no tenían muchos bajos, pues que respirasen tan bien a alto régimen, impedía que lo hicieran bien a medios y bajos. Ya el motor de Opel a finales de los 80 se encargó de demostrar que no era así. Y ahora muchos usan tecnología multiválvulas y turbo, una tecnología al principio “rival” y luego amiga, porque para meter mucho aire en un motor, nada mejor que el motor tenga “agujeros grandes” y el aire vaya a presión. Conclusión. ¡Cuánto han progresado los motores de combustión interna! Una pena que, con la agenda 2030, este avance tecnológico se va a detener… nunca sabremos hasta dónde se podría haber llegado. Muchos diréis: “Seguro que eso mismo decían en su momento, cuando el motor de combustión sustituyo al de vapor”. Pues sí, pero ese cambio fue sobrevenido por las posibilidades de uno y otro motor, no por las normas de políticos que no saben mucho o nada de coches… no es lo mismo. Coche del día. Podría ser el Kadett, el primer 16V bueno de verdad y popular. Pero confieso tener una debilidad por el Triumph Dolomite Sprint que ya en 1973 usaba las 16 válvulas para obtener de sus motos de 2 litros 127 CV. Y además, era un coche precioso.
