Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by Rapha We've finally got him on the pod – a spot that in his own words, he was born ready for, and I couldn't be more excited to chat with my friend FYXO (aka Andy White), to take a deep dive into the fixie world. It morphs nicely into the trajectory that Life in the Peloton has taken this year, where I've been talking a lot about uncovering all the different pelotons out there, and this is one of the most niche pelotons of them all. Andy and I go way back to our days racing the club scene in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, where he used to race on an old vintage steel bike. He spent time as a bike courier in London, where he worked during the ‘heyday' of the profession – where businesses would courier documents around the city in the same way we now send an email. It was a bit of an unexpectedly cool, cult profession at the time, that came with a bit of street cred. It was also from within the world of bike couriers that alley cat racing kicked off – which is an underground subculture of unstructured night races around the city, usually starting from the pub after a few pints. He has dabbled in all aspects of fixie riding since settling back in Melbourne, most notably setting up his brand FYXO, which was all about bringing fixed gear bikes into the country during the boom in fixie riding that happened a few years back and documenting his adventures around the world riding alley cat races. It's fascinating to hear about how Andy became immersed in this world and raced the alley cats in the cities of London and New York, before eventually bringing alley cat racing Down Under, and typically in his own unique way - in a style that he calls alley cats for the masses. The largest of these is the Melburn - Roobaix, which is now in its 16th year and has become synonymous with fixed-gear riding in Melbourne. It combines many of the different subcultures of cycling and the result is a fun, epic day of cycling, and something that I love being part of. I hope you enjoy listening and learning more about the intriguing world of fixie riding! Cheers, Mitch

As I was conducting some searches on the regular social platforms I came across German Based RAD-RACING a super cool FIXED GEAR inner track race for the LAST MAN/WOMEN Standing are announced as the winners. So I had to reach out to find the leader and mastermind(s) behind this freakin cool event. I found Ingo, with friends who created not just Rad-Race, Tour De Friends and other cycling events across the globe. Rad-Race is also a bike shop in Hember, Germany. I'm sure you will you will love this guy's attitude as much as I did!

Hello everyone! Like many other things, fixed-gear riding looks to also be somewhat of a trend. Things come and go, repeat themself and sometimes end up never being heard again. Hey everyone! Do you ever feel like people within the fixed gear community are trying to dictate how you should ride or how you should set your bike up? Cinelli frames, Thomson stems, Omnium cranks, Zipp wheels, and so on, seem like the default option across the scene. Of course, we’re exaggerating. A bit. Anything that doesn’t fall within certain guidelines that the community at large finds acceptable is often scrutinized by people, whether at races and meet-ups or behind the safety of anonymity online. Whether it is running a brake, having regular cranks and chainring, or simply not wide enough bars, there is often something that people will criticize for not being ‘okay’. Chances are you have experienced this and you wouldn’t be alone. Although we like to believe that we’re rebelling against and are very unlike mainstream (road) cycling, and doing our own thing, this may not be the case in all aspects. Even within the community, there are influences that lead most of us to have nearly identical parts and narrow down options to just a few different combinations. In this episode, we talk about where influences in the fixed-gear scene are coming from, how they can affect you, how they’ve affected us, and share our thoughts on this matter. Hey nice bike! Looks a lot like mine… Now I need to change everything! Hey everyone! A sense of elitism pervades most hobbies, ranging from uptight coffee snobs to photography armchair experts and the fixed gear community isn’t isolated from this type of behavior. No matter how self-aware and welcoming the whole culture may be, there will always be some people who try to steer the fixed-gear culture into a certain way and exclude those who are branching off from the ‘accepted’ norms. These can include aspects such as the big brakes vs brakeless situation, using bibs vs cool shorts, riding with clipless shoes instead of OG clips. We discuss elitism, fixed gear, and road cycling, how it is perpetuated in fixed gear culture, its impact and our own experiences, and where we stand. Don’t be a d*ck and see you next week! Hey all, SURPRISE! Another cool guest on the show this week. Bet you were expecting an episode on the second-hand market, huh? Gottem. That’s next week (maybe) For now, enjoy our talk with Jackson from the Utah-based FOAD gang. If you’re on the lookout for fixed-gear content producers, you’ve probably come across FOAD either on Youtube, Instagram or even Tik Tok. They have countless very well produced cycling edits and how-to videos tackling the trusty track stand all the way to wheelies and 180s. We delve deeper into the riding scene in Utah, FOAD’s setup and ambitions, future projects and more. We had a lot of fun talking to Jackson and recording this episode LIVE for the very first time as Jackson was streaming the conversation on the FOAD YouTube channel! You know, come to think of it, you probably need to be able to walk before you can learn how to ride a bike… but if it were possible to ride a bike first, I'm pretty sure Charli would have done it. Because from the time she was itty bitty teeny tiny, Charli. Loved. Bikes. Starting at just 4 years old on a little Rhino Racer mini, they would eventually go on to set their very own world record. This episode mentions transphobia, misgendering, and biking injuries This is Charli Mandel on the World's VERY FIRST Fixed Gear Brakeless Everesting Not sure what that means? Hi everyone, Rob - the man, the myth, the legend - is back! It was great to welcome Rob back onto the podcast for a fun hour (or two)! As many of you likely remember, he was the first guest on the SSS podcast (episode #3) where we talked about the fixed gear scene in Berlin, Fxd.BLN and more. This time around we talked about some very exciting developments in the fixed-gear world, a killer photo-centric book about the global fixed gear scene and its cycling groups. This book will be releasing later this year and is written by none other than Rob himself, so make sure to check out his website! Additionally, we talk about Fxd.BLN’s recent trip to Hamburg to ride with the Brakeless Cycling peeps, their large event that is in the works, Skream Bikes sponsoring Rob and his wheel building gig. Have a nice week, and don’t forget, it’s only a matter of time before, you too have a dedicated bike-room You can learn more here: https://www.slowspinsociety.com/podcast/slow-spin-society-podcast-ep24 Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/slowspinsocietypodcast Follow us on Instagram : @slowpinsociety Email us at slowspinpodcast@gmail.com Join our Discord Server here: https://discord.gg/HnDdtRRQ9w Cover Illustration by @juliettejoe_ Intro/outro music: Lovely Swindler – Amarià © 2021 Slow Spin Society
Hi everyone, All of us love fixed gear bikes and riding them, but most of us probably also have other hobbies that take up our time, space, and money. This episode will focus on a handful of hobbies that we see as being more prevalent within the fixed gear community and explore the reasons for this. Additionally, we discuss the benefits and possibilities that having shared hobbies can provide for the fixed gear community and its members. Whether it's drinking coffee or collecting old school cameras, there’s a chance that one of your hobbies is mentioned in this episode! Let's just admit it, hipsters are just fixed gear riders with way more money You can learn more here: https://www.slowspinsociety.com/podcast/slow-spin-society-podcast-ep21 Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/slowspinsocietypodcast Follow us on Instagram : @slowpinsociety Email us at slowspinpodcast@gmail.com Join our Discord Server here: https://discord.gg/HnDdtRRQ9w Cover Illustration by @juliettejoe_ Intro/outro music: Lovely Swindler – Amarià © 2021 Slow Spin Society
Hey cultured fixed-gear enthusiasts, Have you ever wondered about the current state of the fixed gear scene? Where it came from and where it's going? Wonder no more! This week we tackle what the culture is, how it was born, and most importantly, how it is being kept alive today. With the advent of the internet and social media, the fixed gear scene has grown and managed to reach many parts of the world. Now there are countless riders, bike crews, crit organizers, content producers, and brands close to the community that plays a vital role in keeping the culture alive and thriving! That’s it for this week! Keep the culture growing, let’s spread and defeat the e-bikes army! Hey, Slow Spinners! Are your stacks of cash burning a hole in your wallet? Do you feel the need to engage in retail therapy? This is the perfect episode for you. The ability to customize a fixed-gear bike from the rims and tires down to valve caps and bolts allows one to let loose and develop the perfect bike for one’s needs and taste. The big question is: Where does one start? In this episode, we go through a semi-ordered list of parts to prioritize when upgrading or updating. Naturally, some parts are personal and depend on riding style, budget, taste, and so on. We do not always agree with each other and that’s okay, so take this list with a grain of salt and build whatever you’d love to ride!
Today we have not one, but TWO special guests to help us talk about maternity leave. Amy and Brit join us from the Still Not Ready podcast. If you remember the super cringey Canadian teen drama, Ready or Not, then you have to check out their podcast! They're both finishing up a year of COVID mat leaves and share their experiences. We talk about how mat leave before and during the lockdowns impacted the experience, and tips on how new moms can make the most of their time home with their new little one. We drink the Guelph brewed Fixed Gear cherry sour, reveal the product that got us through our mat leaves, and give our mom shout outs to LUCY RAMONE AND PHYLLIS ZIM from, you guessed it, Ready or Not! Thanks again to Amy and Brit for joining us, we had a blast!! Find us on the socials or write to us at momvoicepod@gmail.com.
G'day listeners In this episode, we went through some (terrible) trends and ideas that have entered and left the scene over the years and shared our thoughts on them. Whether it's ultra-compact riser bars or 3kg deep-colored aluminum rims, there's a good chance we trash talk trends which you (and we) have followed! This is, of course, all in good fun and our opinions don't and shouldn't prevent anyone from customizing and using their bike the way they want to. Hey, hello, and hi to everyone reading this! For this episode, we decided to do something a bit different from the usual programming. Both of us compiled a list of around 10 parts of cycling that elicit minor or major discussions and disagreements in the community. We did not know each other’s lists and, in most cases, stances regarding various cycling aspects. This, of course, was all in good fun and only represents our personal preferences. Furthermore, we were not able to go through both lists in this episode. Maybe this requires a part two in the future? Let us know if you’d like that and if so, feel free to send us your own takes on aspects of cycling that we haven’t discussed. Zerothreetwo Conversations: Interviews with the Creative Class
It was in the middle of a three hour car ride from Minglanilla on my way back to Mandaue when I realized that my days were being ruined by hours and hours of wasted time in the car. I couldn't stand it anymore. Then I fondly remembered a trip to Copenhagen. Everyone was riding a bike. But I thought that there's no way that would work in Cebu. Fast forward to two years later, my vehicle of choice is a bicycle. There's so much good from commuting via bicycle. I can't talk about it enough. So I realized it would be good to talk to another person who has been doing the same thing for much longer than me. It also helps that he was one of the pioneers of the Fixed Gear community in Cebu, had a hand in the Road Revolution in 2011, and has been preaching the bike as a commute for a while. I talked to Rye Kido. In this episode, we talk about the fixed gear community, his journey to cycling (there were girls involved), the state of commuting in Cebu, and musings about possible solutions. Enjoy! Karl Moritz (Kajomo) is a trooper. In June of 2010 he was struck head on by a vehicle while cycling on a neighborhood road in Southeast Portland. As if this wasn’t devastating enough, he was dragged 32 feet underneath the car. He was given a 90% chance of being in a vegetable state if he did indeed survive the accident. He spent over 30 days in a Coma and several months in the hospital. Miraculously, a year after his accident, he biked a Century (100 miles). He is incredible. To this day, he cycles Fixed Gear now for cognition and exercise benefits nearly every day and even rode his hand built Track bike to meet up with me. His story is more than inspiring, and the amount he has overcome can only be understood by listening to his story. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as Kajomo and I did.

Lots of components. Impeccable miniatures. Tasteful nudes? You get it all in this week’s episode of Beer’d Gamers when we take on the steampunk, alternate history-themed Scythe. Scythe is a resource-gathering and objective-based board game much like Catan, but it also has an element of combat which allows for players to earn victory conditions in order to bring on the scoring phase of the game. Scythe is one of the most beautiful and smooth board games any of us have every played, and we hope that you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed playing. The game retails for roughly $70 depending on the seller, and we Beer’d Gamers highly recommend picking up a copy for your next board game night. This week in malted beverages we’ve got Nelson drinking Block Party by Karben4, Junior and Teej coincidentally drink the same beer, Bacon Bomb Rauchbier from Brenner Brewing Co., and Schnell goes with a Wisconsin craft classic Fixed Gear, a red IPA from Lakefront Brewery. We have an all-Wisconsin beer episode on tap for you this week!
