I, Stewart Alsop, am thrilled to welcome Leon Coe back to the Crazy Wisdom Podcast for a second deep dive. This time, we journeyed from the Renaissance and McLuhan's media theories straight into the heart of theology, church history, and the very essence of faith, exploring how ancient wisdom and modern challenges intertwine. It was a fascinating exploration, touching on everything from apostolic succession to the nature of sin and the search for meaning in a secular age.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:43 I kick things off by asking Leon about the Renaissance, Martin Luther, and the profound impact of the printing press on religion.01:02 Leon Coe illuminates Marshall McLuhan's insights on how technologies, like print, shape our consciousness and societal structures.03:25 Leon takes us back to early Church history, discussing the Church's life and sacraments, including the Didache, well before the Bible's formal canonization.06:00 Leon explains the scriptural basis for Peter as the "rock" of the Church, the foundation for the office of the papacy.07:06 We delve into the concept of apostolic succession, where Leon describes the unbroken line of ordination from the apostles.11:57 Leon clarifies Jesus's relationship to the Law, referencing Matthew 5:17 where Jesus states he came to fulfill, not abolish, the Law.12:20 I reflect on the intricate dance of religion, culture, and technology, and the sometimes bewildering, "cosmic joke" nature of our current reality.16:46 I share my thoughts on secularism potentially acting as a new, unacknowledged religion, and how it often leaves a void in our search for purpose.19:28 Leon introduces what he calls the "most terrifying verse in the Bible," Matthew 7:21, emphasizing the importance of doing the Father's will.24:21 Leon discusses the Eucharist as the new Passover, drawing connections to Jewish tradition and Jesus's institution of this central sacrament.Key InsightsTechnology's Shaping Power: McLuhan's Enduring Relevance. Leon highlighted how Marshall McLuhan's theories are crucial for understanding history. The shift from an oral, communal society to an individualistic one via the printing press, for instance, directly fueled the Protestant Reformation by enabling personal interpretation of scripture, moving away from a unified Church authority. The Early Church's Foundation: Life Before the Canon. Leon emphasized that for roughly 300 years before the Bible was officially canonized, the Church was actively functioning. It had established practices, sacraments (like baptism and the Eucharist), and teachings, as evidenced by texts like the Didache, demonstrating a lived faith independent of a finalized scriptural canon.Peter and Apostolic Succession: The Unbroken Chain. A core point from Leon was Jesus designating Peter as the "rock" upon which He would build His Church. This, combined with the principle of apostolic succession—the laying on of hands in an unbroken line from the apostles—forms the Catholic and Orthodox claim to authoritative teaching and sacramental ministry.Fulfillment, Not Abolition: Jesus and the Law. Leon clarified that Jesus, as stated in Matthew 5:17, came not to abolish the Old Testament Law but to fulfill it. This means the Mosaic Law finds its ultimate meaning and completion in Christ, who institutes a New Covenant.Secularism's Spiritual Vacuum: A Modern Religion? I, Stewart, posited that modern secularism, while valuing empiricism, often acts like a new religion that explicitly rejects the spiritual and miraculous. Leon agreed this can lead to a sense of emptiness, as humans inherently long for purpose and connection to a creator, a void secularism struggles to fill. The Criticality of God's Will: Beyond Lip Service. Leon pointed to Matthew 7:21 ("Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven...") as a stark reminder. True faith requires more than verbal profession; it demands actively doing the will of the Father, implying that actions and heartfelt commitment are essential for salvation. The Eucharist as Central: The New Passover and Real Presence. Leon passionately explained the Eucharist as the new Passover, instituted by Christ. Referencing John 6, he stressed the Catholic belief in the Real Presence—that the bread and wine become the literal body and blood of Christ—which is essential for spiritual life and communion with God.Reconciliation and Purity: Restoring Communion. Leon explained the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) as a vital means, given through the Church's apostolic ministry, to restore communion with God after sin. He also touched upon Purgatory as a state of purification for overcoming attachments to sin, ensuring one is perfectly ordered to God before entering Heaven.Contact Information* Leon Coe: @LeonJCoe on Twitter (X)

Before Johannes Gutenberg's revolutionary invention, knowledge was a privilege accessible only to the wealthy, the powerful, or the devout. In this world, ideas travelled slowly, and were constrained by the limits of human hand. So when, in the mid-15th century, Gutenberg invented the printing press, it became so much more than a machine. Ideas could be replicated by the thousands, making it the first great equaliser of information. But how did this seemingly humble invention fuel the fires of the Renaissance? How did it change Europe's relationship with the church, and give rise to the Reformation? And how did it help to shape the reputations of historical figures, from Vlad the Impaler, to Joan of Arc? While the printing press was to change history, readers of the first mass produced book, the Gutenberg Bible, would have noticed few differences from the hand written books they were used to reading.

Jeff Douglas speaks with David Deane, a Catholic theologian and an associate prof at the Atlantic School of Theology, in Halifax. He's studied how people thought and acquired knowledge before the printing press.
It's a symbol of how we can also appreciate how we're getting service. It comes down to us as a blessing if we can take that and embrace it, and lucky for us, if it can be in that same moment where we don't have the moment to think of anything else. Lifetime goes by like that, and one looks down and says, 'Oh, I'm old,' or 'something's old,' or 'somebody is.' But as Mahārāja was expressing today, whatever it is, next life, life after that will still go on asking, 'Where's that service?' And it all starts with this printing press, because that was the main order that Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta gave to Śrīla Prabhupāda, which he followed exactly. Every penny went for that, and everything was based. As he said, his temples were bases from which devotees would go out to drop books, like armies do or air forces do during the war, like bombs raining from the sky on the laps of conditioned souls. In 15th and 16th century Scotland, in the highest courts of the land, you'd find esteemed poets hurling insults at each other. This was flyting, a sort of medieval equivalent of battle rap, and it was so popular at the time that the King himself wrote instructions for how to do it well. Writer and Scots language campaigner Ishbel McFarlane and historical linguist Joanna Kopaczyk explain the art of flyting, where an insult becomes slander, what's going on within the speech act of performative diss-trading, and what the legal consequences could be of being accused of witchcraft. Find out more about the episode and read the transcript at theallusionist.org/flyting. Content note: this episode contains brief references to historical capital and corporal punishments, and discussion of insults and slurs; there is also a derogatory term for sex workers, and category A and B swears. Inequality reporter Stephanie Convery returns on a trip with Liz and Ben into the world of banking, high finance and monetary theory in Terry Pratchett's thirty-sixth Discworld novel, 2007's Making Money. The Ankh-Morpork Post Office is running very smoothly - which has left Moist von Lipwig, reformed con-man and Postmaster General, at a loose end. But he resists the Patrician's offer of a new job revitalising the Royal Mint and Royal Bank of Ankh-Morpork. The bank's current owner is a Mark 1 Feisty Old Lady who knows her rich family are out to get her - and her little dog, too. But despite Moist's best attempts to not get involved, both dog and bank wind up in his care - putting him in the sights of the Lavish family, and especially Vetinari-obsessed Cosmo Lavish. Meanwhile, manager of the Golem Trust (and Moist's fiancée) Adora Belle Dearheart is digging up something ancient out on the desert. And Moist's past is about to catch up with him... Just a few novels after debuting in Going Postal, Moist von Lipwig is back! Making Money is about the nature of money, but also about the thrill of the chase, grappling with one's inner nature, and obsession. Aside from Gladys the Golem, Moist and Adora Belle bring few of their previous supporting cast along for the ride; instead we meet a new cast including Mr Bent, the Lavishes, another Igor, the Post-Mortem Communications Department of Unseen University, and the very good boy Mr Fusspot. Does this live up to the promise of Going Postal? Could Moist be in other Discworld books in disguise - and if so, as who? Did you guess Mr Bent's secret? And if you had a Glooper, what would you use it to change in the world of money? No purchase necessary to join the conversation for this episode; just email us or use the hashtag #Pratchat80 on social media. Stephanie Convery (she/her) is is a writer and author. Previously the Deputy Culture Editor for The Guardian Australia, she's now their dedicated inequality reporter. In the meantime, the newly recovered story in A Stroke of the Pen is “Arnold, the Bominable Snowman” (we've not yet found it online). Also, here's the free Quickstart for the Discworld: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork roleplaying game; it's also available via DriveThruRPG. The Kickstarter launches on 15 October. Those three upcoming Discworld plays in Australia are The Fifth Elephant from Brisbane Arts Theatre from 19 October; Maskerade by Sporadic Productions in Adelaide from 30 October; and Guards! Guards! from Roleystone Theatre in Perth from 22 November. Next episode we're continuing our Moist streak (sorry) with the (so far) latest Discworld board game: Clacks! For Christians, the Bible is a book inspired by God. But it has been received by different cultures and language groups in (sometimes) radically different ways. Following Jesus's departing instruction to go out into the world, the Bible has been a book in motion from its very beginnings, and every community it has encountered has read, heard, and seen the Bible through its own language and culture. It was spread by merchants, missionaries, and colonizers Asia, Africa, and to the Americas. Local communities adapted the "alien" book through a blend of cultural integration and reinterpretation. For instance, 20th-century Chinese theologians described similarities between Confucianism and biblical texts, while Native Americans placed themselves directly into biblical narratives—a group of 18th-century Mohican converts renamed themselves Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, proclaiming themselves "patriarchs of a new nation of believers."Today's guest is Bruce Gordon, author of “The Bible: A Global History.” We discuss the story of the Bible's journey around the globe and across more than two thousand years, showing how it has shaped and been shaped by changing beliefs and believers' different needs. The people who received it interpreted it in radically different ways, from desert monasteries and Chinese house churches, Byzantine cathedrals and Guatemalan villages.
Throughout much of history, the copying of printed material was a long and tedious and process that took the writer several days, weeks, months, even years, to complete. Particularly in Medieval times, places known as scriptoria saw scribes, usually monks, spending hours of back-breaking work hunched over illuminated manuscripts. While beautiful works of art in their own right, something had to be done to make the copying of texts quicker, more efficient and less labor-intensive. Enter Johannes Gutenberg, a German goldsmith and printmaker who changed the course of publishing forever and even ushered a revolution in printing. Tune in to this week's brief segment to learn all about it! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historylovescompany/support
Johannes Gutenberg's revolutionary printing press revolutionized communication technology and changed the world, because it allowed for the mass production of books. Coming from a time when books were rarer than gems, the ability to make copies faster helped launch movements and scientific discoveries. Even today, communication is expanding and growing faster, and it is all due to Gutenberg. Please help us out by leaving a comment and sharing our show with others! The clattering and clanking of the steam-driven printing press represents a milestone for civilization. This automated system made disseminating information significantly easier, bringing news to an eager audience. Each pass of the rattling roller, repeatedly depositing ink on the page, broadened the distribution of knowledge by wresting control from the ruling class and giving it directly to the people. Every puff of steam power that pushed together the paper and type was a small victory for the common man. ---
David Butterfield is a renowned classicist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Cambridge. His work centres on the critical study and teaching of classical texts. How did the Renaissance revival of Greek language study transform Western Europe's intellectual landscape and shape our modern understanding of the Classics? In this talk, delivered on the island of Samos in Greece in August 2023 as part of Ralston College's Master's in the Humanities program, Dr. David Butterfield—Senior Lecturer in Classics at the University of Cambridge—charts how Western Europe came to appreciate the language and culture of ancient Greece as an integral part of its own civilizational inheritance. Dr. Butterfield explains that large-scale technological and cultural changes in late antiquity led to a gradual loss of Greek language proficiency—and a waning interest in the pagan world—among Western European intellectuals during the Early Middle Ages. While the Scholasticism of the High Middle Ages was invigorated by the rediscovery of the Greek philosophical tradition, this encounter was mediated almost entirely through Latin translations. It was only in the Renaissance—when a renewed appreciation of the Hellenic world on its own terms led to a revitalization of Greek language study—that our contemporary conception of Classics was fully established. — 00:00 Introduction: A Journey through Classical Literature with Dr. Butterfield 04:05 Preservation and Valuation of Greek Culture 06:55 The Evolution of Writing Systems 14:50 Greek Influence on Roman Culture 20:25 The Rise of Christianity and Advances in Book Technology 27:40 Preservation and Transmission of Classical Texts in the Middle Ages 32:50 Arabic Scholars: Preserving Greek Knowledge and Shaping Western Thought 36:00 The Renaissance and Rediscovery of Greek Texts 43:10 Conclusion: The Printing Press and the Spread of Classical Knowledge — Authors, Ideas, and Works Mentioned in this Episode: Homer Magna Graecia Pythagoras Odyssey Cato the Elder Third Macedonian War Great Library of Alexandria Great Library of Pergamum Horace, Epistles Emperor Augustus Codex Sinaiticus Constantine Neoplatonism Plato Charlemagne Carolingian Renaissance Virgil Ovid Abbasid Caliphate Avveroës Avicenna Thomas Aquinas Petrarch Ottoman Conquest Epicurus Lucretius Aristotle Gutenberg — Additional Resources Dr Stephen Blackwood Ralston College (including newsletter) Support a New Beginning Ralston College Humanities MA Antigone - Explore Ancient Greece and Rome with Modern Insights Join the conversation and stay updated on our latest content by subscribing to the Ralston College YouTube channel.

The history of some of Ellen White's most famous books.
There are expeditions and battles in the east of the Baltic Sea region this week and we see changes in the political landscape back home too. Sweden also makes a big cultural and scientific leap as the printing press arrives on our shores! The first few books might not exactly be best sellers and they also aren't that imaginatively named either, just like a new castle built over in Finland...

The Fourth Church Age Scott Wright pt 3 Last time, we studied the Third Church Age. I'll let Scott give a summary of what we discussed, but, basically, this was the age where the Pope and the Catholic church ruled by fear, intimidation and brute force. But, basically, Rome obtain it's power and wealth through the god of force – which is Satan. But, to talk more about this and to discuss the Fourth Age of the Church, Scott Wright is back with us today. Scott has been teaching us about the different ages of the Church and significant things the Bible and history has to say about them. He does this by helping us understand the processed that God's Word readily gives us in order to draw closer to him. He has also published a journal called, “God Centered Concept Journal: Making God's Word My Ways.” Scott has a goal of launching this series on a large scale, reaching churches and organizations with this curriculum that will change their churches from simple institutions into a “movement.” Amen! He is also a podcaster and has a truly great podcast called, “The God Centered Concept,” as well. You really need to listen – and subscribe – to this podcast… it's amazing… But, more than that, he is also a HUGE student of end time scenarios dealing with the Book of the Revelation, the End of Days and the Seven Ages of the Church. I have asked him to come on the program today as we continue a series of interviews discussing the Church Ages. This is part three and the conclusion of what turned into a great, THREE PART INTERVIEW! How did the Printing Press impact the spread of the Gospel? Scott, this has been fascinating. What will we be talking about next time? Share with us how someone can reach out to you and get more information on this? And your book, “God Centered Concept Journal: Making God's Word My Ways.” How can someone obtain a copy of your book? Is it on Amazon? Before we close, share again about your podcast…The God Centered Concept I'll put links to all of this in the show notes below. Folks, there is no doubt that we are living in what Jesus and historical Christian scholars have called, “The End Times.” We are working our way through each of the Church Ages in order to give you a more thorough understanding of how all this fits into what we are witnessing, right now, all around us. We should not be in a state of fear and trepidation. NO! We need to be excited! We need to be thanking GOD for the day and time in which we live… Think about like this… as you witness all these things happening around us, don't be filled with fear, but Faith. And, “Look up! For your redemption is drawing near.” Until next time, for Scott Wright and myself, this is Pastor Bob reminding you to BE BLESSED IN ALL THAT YOU DO! CONTACT INFORMATION:

I have asked him to come on the program today as we continue a series of interviews discussing the Church Ages. This is part two of what turned into a great, THREE PART INTERVIEW! You share that this church age, the Fourth Church Age, is probably the most significant church age out of them all. Can you share with us “why that is?” How do you see the end time scenario being played out before us? Are we destined to repeat these church ages, albeit on a smaller scale in our own lives? From 1315-1322 was the Great Famine and then the “Black Death.” This was just a shadow of what is to come during the “Great Tribulation” where 1/3 of humanity dies. How did the Renaissance impact the Church? How did the Printing Press impact the spread of the Gospel? We are working our way through each of the Church Ages in order to give you a more thorough understanding of how all this fits into what we are witnessing, right now, all around us.
