Welcome to Season 3, Episode 48. We loved reading King of the Armadillos, the new novel by poet, graphic novelist, and all-around amazing writer Wendy Chin-Tanner. King of the Armadillos thoughtfully levels-up the coming-of-age story with multi-generational Asian American experiences set in the 1950s… not to mention an authentic look at how Hansen's Disease AKA leprosy impacts individuals, families, and communities. The main character, Victor, struggles with recovery, feelings of belonging, and family responsibilities. We discuss all of those things as well as the importance of breaking out of Asian male stereotypes, the work it takes to create authentic historical fiction, her advice for aspiring API authors, how she selected specific songs for the novel, and so much more. Enjoy the conversation and go out and buy King of the Armadillos... you won't regret it. It's even on sale at Amazon right now at over $10 off. We also recommend purchasing her poetry collection Turn or her graphic novel American Terrorist… and be sure to explore all the work on A Wave Blue World, the graphic novel publishing company that Wendy co-founded with her husband Tyler. Timothy McVeigh chose Buffalo News Journalist to tell his story. Over the course of several hours in the months leading up to McVeigh's execution, our Guest Lou Michel sat down with Timothy McVeigh and a tape recorder on a quest to share with the world McVeigh's story, - a story that jurors didn't get to hear, according to McVeigh himself. The result is an outstanding book called American Terrorist, Timothy McVeigh & The Oklahoma City Bombing, a New York Times Best Selling Novel he wrote with fellow journalist Dan Herbeck. Mr. Michel was kind enough to share his firsthand insight into Timothy McVeigh with me. Please welcome Lou Michel to A Murderous Design.
This week, in light of the recent terrorist attack in Atlanta that left 6 Asian-American women dead at the hands of a White, Homegrown, American Terrorist, the gals are feeling raw and confused and hurt and decided to have a real conversation about where their heads are at. While this attack happened in Atlanta, the incidents of Asian-Canadian hate attacks are going up in both Vancouver and Toronto. And the gals are scared. Nikki and Kris talk about depictions in the media of Asians, Asian Women, and the historical alienation of Asian people. Nikki talks about the generational suffering of Asian parents to provide for their kids, and Kris talks about the horrors of being a woman, let alone an Asian Woman. Remember the cell of five terrorists who established a training camp in the New Mexico desert? Their makeshift compound, was discovered because of a search for a missing boy and a plea for help that came from Facebook, answered by an imam who was the first Muslim to offer opening prayer before the U.S. House of Representatives, and also the father of one of the terrorists. This is a story full of twists and turns that would seem invented by a Hollywood screenwriter, except that it’s all true and horrifying. It began with an affair between polygamist Siraj Wahhaj and the woman who became his second wife, Jany Leveille. They decided to kidnap Siraj’s son, then gather their friends to set up a terrorist training camp in the remote desert. Unfortunately, the boy, 3-year -old Abdul-ghani Wahhaj, had a seizure disorder that Siraj and Jany decided to cure with an exorcism that resulted in his death. Siraj Ibn Wahhaj and Jany Leveille, are charged with abuse of a child resulting in the death of a child and conspiracy to commit abuse of a child. However, Jany was recently found mentally unfit to stand trial, and is now in a psychiatric hospital. She saw herself as a religious prophet for the group and not only believed the boy was possessed by evil spirits, but that the dead would rise and instruct them on the government institutions they were to destroy.

The bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19th, 1995 in Oklahoma City stands as the most deadly act of domestic terrorism, killing 169 people and injuring nearly 700. Although perpetrator of the attacks Timothy McVeigh would take sole credit for the atrocity on that day, there have always been theories involving a nefarious "John Doe #2" at the scene that went dismissed. Our writer Joseph LaFave got to know Special Agent Kevin Waters as a college professor of his, but years prior to his teaching career Waters was there on that infamous day. Waters details an account of a man he saw on the scene days before with McVeigh, that he believes was someone other than the individual labeled John Doe #2. LaFave details the story of Waters in his exclusive piece for Newsrep, and LaFave now joins us on Episode 443 to relay this account that has gone unwritten until now. As someone who has always had a fascination with the topic seeing documentaries ranging from the conspiracy-ridden "Oklahoma City, What Really Happened?" (often uploaded by various users online) to the more mainstream account of the event "Oklahoma City" available on Netflix, as well as reading books like "American Terrorist" by Lou Michel and Dan Herbeck, it is fascinating hearing unheard information 24 years after the fact. I highly suggest reading Joseph's piece. He conducted a thought-provoking interview, and I hope that you learn something from this episode.
