In Alex & Ada #2 (2013), written by Sarah Vaughn & Jonathan Luna, the reader will likely notice many similarities between the comic and real life. [School of Movies 2017] Here's a short, and by no means exhaustive list of entertainment works influenced by this one movie... RoboCop, Akira, Back to the Future Part II, Ghost in the Shell, The Fifth Element, The Matrix, Futurama, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, I, Robot, Minority Report, Serenity, WALL-E, Battlestar Galactica, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Prometheus, District 9, Alex + Ada, Almost Human, Black Mirror, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Dredd, Chappie, Her, Ex-Machina, Valerian and Westworld. This episode we discuss Ridley Scott's ponderous, flawed, but hugely impactful and striking vision of the future, and musing on the nature of humanity, accompanied by Vangelis, and one of the greatest scores ever put to film. We steer clear of speculation about 2049 and that follow-up will get a full show in time. Guests Neil Taylor of TheKidDogg Collin Miller of The Cinema Cephalopod

Before they jump into the reviews, however, they discuss some of the big comics news from the past week: the announcement of the 2017 Eisner Award nominations and Free Comic Book Day. The guys don't go into too much detail about the Eisner nominees because they plan on devoting an upcoming episode to that topic. However, they do briefly mention the curious situation surrounding the nomination of the Love Is Love collection in the Best Anthology category. They have much more to say about last Saturday's Free Comic Book Day. Both guys share some of their experiences at their local shops and the free comics they got there. Listen to the podcast's FCBD episode for more details. But then the Two Guys get into the heart of this week's show. They begin with Chris W. Kim's Herman by Trade, coming out this week from SelfMadeHero. Although on the surface this appears to be a more realistic narrative, its fantastic elements become apparent in the transformation of the title character who has the ability to change his appearance and mimic others' abilities at will. As both Derek and Andy point out, this is an unusual story that sticks with you long after reading. Next, they turn to a new graphic biography that is all about fantasy, Rise of the Dungeon Master: Gary Gygax and the Creation of D&D (Nation Books). The art is by Koren Shadmi, but the book is written by David Kushner, based on a profile he wrote for Wired magazine in 2008. What's most notable about this brief biography is the narrative point of view, almost entirely presented in the second person. This is fully in keeping with the spirit of role-playing games, where in this case the the narrating presence is, in essence, your "dungeon master" guiding your awareness as you enter the creators' biographical realm. Finally, Andy and Derek conclude with the latest collaboration from Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn. Eternal Empire #1 (Image Comics) is a fantasy set in a distant world that, as Andy points out, is reminiscent of Game of Thrones. In fact, the guys spend a good bit of time speculating on the originality of this series, wondering if the unique elements will become more apparent in the issues to come. And while Andy isn't sure if he'll stick around to find out, Derek is going to give Eternal Empire a chance, especially given his appreciation of the Luna brothers' previous comics, and especially Luna and Vaughn's previous series Alex + Ada.
We're back with episode 42, discussing AI, specifically of the female or female-coded variety. Topics include the films Her and Ex Machina, and the comic Alex + Ada by Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn, how those stories are in conversation with one another, what gender has to do with robots, and whether artificial intelligence is even that great of an idea, anyway. Special thanks to our friend Stephani for the donuts. Oh, and her intelligent conversation. The post Episode 41 – AI appeared first on FAKE GEEK GIRLS.

Kick off your shoes, get comfortable and get ready for almost 3 hours of the Graphic Novice Comic Book Podcast. The opening segment takes up roughly an hour, as VF & Nickel catch up and discuss the Graphic Novice T-Shirt campaign, cabin renovations, July 4th, gun control and fireworks. After the non-comic related banter comes to an end, the "Comic News" segment focuses entirely on a run down of all the books scheduled for release or relaunch following the end of Marvel's "Secret Wars" event. VF and Nickel discuss each book and share their relative enthusiasm for the title. Following one of the longer news segments, HQ sent the signal down to try and wrap things up, so the guys limited "Rapid Fire Review" to one week of books, looking at the titles released on June 17, 2015, including: Captain Canuck #2, Black Canary #1, Justice League of America #1, Alex + Ada #15, Lazarus #17, Low#7, Manifest Destiny #15, Southern Bastards #9, Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars #2, Magneto #19, Moon Knight #16, Ms. Marvel #16, Old Man Logan #2, Runaways #1, Thors #1, Bloodshot Reborn #3, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #45 & 46. The guys promise to catch up on Rapid Fire Review next episode and close out the show with a look at the books released on July 8, 2015. Thanks so much for listening... Stay Classy.

Everything starts out nice and civil as VF and Nickel discuss Mother's Day, marriage, regional differences in Canada, Rose City Comic Con, meeting new people, fear of financing, mortgages, and the cabin financing until things get a little heated during a debate of the merits of Marvel's Secret Wars Event. VF is really optimistic and positive about Secret Wars after the first book, Nickel decides to rant incoherently on the negative side. In a nonsensical tirade, Nickel insults Stan Lee and broad range of comic writers and confuses the '60s with the '80s, while VF prefers the path of common sense. Early polls have Round 1 going to VF, but Nickel's incessant rambling do manage to give VF a migraine. In our "Rapid-Fire Review" segment for books released on April 29, 2015, we talk about Batman #40, Convergence #4, Alex + Ada #14, Bitch Planet #4, Outcast #8, Red One #2, All-New Captain America #6, Avengers #44, Fantastic Four #645, Inhuman #14, Moon Knight #14, New Avengers #33, Nova #30, Silk #3, Superior Iron-Man #8, Wolverines #16, and X-Men #26. After wrapping up our discussion of a week of reading, we once again look ahead to the books coming out on May 6, 2015 and pick the books we're most excited about. Unite the Seven.
Comics Therapy. No Reviews. Just Analysis.Three comics books from April 29, 2015. Plus a Second, Opinion, featuring questions answered by a different listener each week, with Ben Diederich. Show Notes:This week we’re talking about Avengers and New Avengers, the current runs of which will go down in history as the best large scale comic event ever. With issues #44 and #33 respectively, we end three years of complex build up of multiple storylines and infinite characters all leading to Secret Wars. And in contrast, we’re also going to talk about Alex + Ada #14, which is about as different from an event comic as you can get. Understated, emotional growth between primarily two characters. Aaron suggested the theme be “there can be only one”, a tongue in cheek reference to a single Earth left in Avengers. But Andrea countered with “it takes two”, or three or four or twenty-seven. There’s plenty of room for all kinds of comics. Let’s dive into these polar opposites and see what we see.Avengers #44New Avengers #33 13:35Alex + Ada #14 36:12
The Graphic Novice Comic Book Podcast returns for another week. After announcing a new 60-minute format change proposal, we changed nothing, and to the surprise of noone, we didnt mangage to cut any time off the podcast. We spend the non-comic book portion of the show talking about past break-ups, sleeping habits, sneaking back home after a night of drinking and a plethora of other self-indulgent subject matter before moving on to our focus content, comic books. Comic news includes a cutting and insightful review of iZombie and the CW App. In our weekly review of the books we read from March 18, we discuss Batgirl #40, Batman Eternal #50, Alex + Ada #13, Chrononauts #1, Outcast #7, Red One #1, All-New Captain America #5, All-New X-Men #39, Amazing Spider-Man #16.1, Magneto #16 (Nickel's Book of the Week), Moon Knight #13, Silk #2, and Wolverines #11. We didnt leave enough time to discuss the February Sales totals, so we moved right to a quick look at the books coming out March 25, 2015, and say our weekly goodbyes.

A celebration of 50 episodes, and well over 100 hours of podcasting together, we start out the show with a slightly self-indulgent look at where we're at as a podcast. Nickel bought himself a congratulatory cake and some Smaug Stout for a one-man celebration, and doesn't shut up after the stout kicks in. The guys talk about Doc's march to the National Hockey League, his troubles at the local comic shop, and then deal with the listener feedback mailbag. In "Rapid-Fire Review" the guys discuss Evil Empire #10, Batman #38, Batman Eternal #43, Gotham Academy #4, Gotham By Midnight #3, The Multiversity Guidebook #1, Alex + Ada #12, Bitch Planet #2, Cassanova Acedia #1, Dying and The Dead #1, They're Not Like Us #2, Amazing X-Men #16, New Avengers #29, Nova #26, Spider-Man 2099 #8, Thor #4 and Uncanny Avengers #1. We wrap things up, as always, with a look at the books we're reading in the upcoming week (February 4, 2015), and Nickel drunkedly tries to remember people to thank before VF has to put him out of his misery. Thanks for listening!

This week, Graphic Novice pays homage to Dolly Parton Wednesdays, and celebrates one of country music's all-time sweethearts off the top of the show. We continue our exploration of the female form with a look at newsworthy women in comics this week, including a Wonder Woman makeover, and a controversial Spider-Woman cover image. After discussing an intellectual look at Spider-Woman's physique, we debate the various reactions to scantily clad females in comics. A quick review of Marvel's AXIS event precedes our "Rapid-Fire Review" segment. Our review of the books from November 12, 2014 includes Crossed Badlands #65, Deep State #1, Evil Empire #7, Wild's End #3, Grindhouse Drive In Bleed Out #1, Batgirl #36, Batman #36, Batman Eternal #32, The Kitchen #1, Alex + Ada #10, Drifter #1, Fade Out #3, Outcast #5, Walking Dead #134, Wytches #2, All-New Captain America #1, Axis #5, Captain America and the Mighty Avengers #1, Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #4, Nightcrawler #8, Nova #23, She-Hulk #10, Spider-Verse #2, Superior Iron Man #1, and Thor #2. We then bring out our Fred for the "Bring Out Your Dead" segment, where we look at Walking Dead TPB #11 (Issues 61-66). Things get wrapped up with an interesting aeronautic twist on next week's books. Thanks for checking us out, we've been working hard on our gluts.
We are back and we are talking about a lot of comics! Thor #2, Batgirl #36, Red Sonja, Wicked + Divine, Wytches, All-New Captain America, Superior Iron Man, Spider-Verse, Captain Marvel, Alex + Ada, and She-Hulk are all on the docket, plus a few more! We also dive in on DC's Convergence event, Doom being a blogger in Fantastic Four, and the monthly comic book sales!

Graphic Novice attempts to connect with a new demographic this episode, and as a result, our explicit rating gets a bit more explicit than usual. The big comic news of the day is DC raising the price of individual Batman issues to $4.99 during the upcoming Endgame arc. We spend a considerable amount of time talking about comic pricing, and a little bit of time discussing Wolverine's pre-mature death in Nightcrawler #7. In "Rapid-Fire Review" we look at Crossed Badlands #62, Batman Eternal #26, Detective Comics #35, Gotham Academy #1, Grayson #3, Cutter #1, Nailbiter #6, Peter Panzerfaust #21, Protectors Inc. #9, Alex + Ada #9, The Fade Out #2, Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier #1, Captain America #25, Death of Wolverine #3 (of 4), Moon Knight #8, Silver Surfer #6, Thor #1, Uncanny Avengers #25, X-Men #20, Sally of the Wasteland #3, and Armor Hunters Aftermath #1. After choosing our best and worst books of the week, Doc explains why he is abandoning the Plus/Minus system he proposed a few episodes back. We wrap things up with a quick look at the books we'll be checking out after their October 8, 2014 release date. A certain guest editor put this episode together after a night of drinking, so if it sounds a bit off, dont worry, we think our regular editor, VF, will take the reigns back after he hears it. Thanks for listening!
Right?

Don't delete this episode just yet, hold on. Do Snitches Get Stitches? Looks like they do, as Doc Thirst gets shanked in the drunk tank during his week off. This episode starts out with our two world travellers discussing their adventures, as we discuss the folk music festival in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and a couple of the larger comic shops in Colorado. Comic news gets skipped over, and we jump right into our inappropriately named "Rapid-Fire Review", and discuss Big Trouble in Little China #3, The Woods #4, Batman Eternal #18, Detective Comics #34, Grayson #2, Alex + Ada #8, Lazarus #10, Nailbiter #4, Spread #2, Black Widow #9, Iron Fist The Living Weapon #5, Kick-Ass 3 #8, Legendary Star-Lord #2, Moon Knight #6, Punisher #9, Rocket Raccoon #2, She-Hulk #7, Superior Spider-Man #32, and The Bunker #5. After we wrap up the reviews/discussion, we tally up the plus/minus scoring system and pick our best and worst of the week. Our esteemed co-host Doc sneaks in a quick summary of his extra-curricular reading before we take a look at July comic book sales, and list the books being released on August 13 that we have an interest in. Its Graphic Novice's first episode on Geek Life Radio, and to celebrate we kept her under the 2.5 hours this week. Recently voted the internet's 6,317th best comic book podcast, please join us for this important moment in Graphic Novice history.
On this week's episode we bring Ali back from the dead. Only problem is... he's a baby. We left him in the Lazarus Pits a little too long and it ended badly. We are still here to talk to you about the comics of the week and the huge weekend opening for Guardians of the Galaxy. With 22 episodes down on vinyl, the metaphorical 80's metal band that is Graphic Novice starts to show some signs of coming off the rails. Will the band be able to put their differences behind them, or will they wrap this thing up and decide to go their separate ways? In between the bickering, we pack this episode with network commercials, quality impressions, public service announcements, and dramatic re-enactments. VF, Doc and Nickel, and guest host Fred discuss which female superhero they would like to see on the big screen, Marvel comics gossip, the awesomeness of Scott Summers, and Doc's mode of transportation for a pending camping trip. After sharing some ill-informed opinions on the news of the day, they move onto "Rapid-Fire Review" and look at Witcher #4, Batman Eternal #11, Harley Quinn #7, Alex + Ada #7, Sex Criminals #6, The Wicked + The Divine, Avengers #31, Nova #18, Original Sin #4, Punisher #7, Silver Surfer #3, Uncanny X-Men #22, Wolverine and the X-Men #5, and X-Men #15. After our always brief and efficient weekly reviews, Fred joins us again, and we share our thoughts and impressions on the second Walking Dead Trade Paperback, "Miles Behind Us" (Issues #7-12). As always, we wrap things up with a look at what books are coming out during the week ahead.

This week Gene and Derek take a look at six new titles. They begin with a discussion of two new works from Image Comics, the first three issues of Alex + Ada (Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn) and Deadly Class #1 (Rick Remender and Wes Craig). They go into depth on both titles, especially Craig's art in Deadly Class and the narrative pacing in Alex + Ada, which ultimately leads to a discussion on panel sequencing and story decompression. Next, they look at issues #1-3 of Letter 44, written by Charles Soule with art by Alberto Jiménez Albuquerque (Oni Press). They discuss its unique take on science fiction within the context of recent politics. From there, they turn to recent #1 issues from three other publishers: David Lapham's Juice Squeezers (Dark Horse Comics), Bill Willingham and Sergio Fernandez DaVilla's Legenderry (Dynamite Entertainment), and Curse from BOOM! Studies (written by Michael Moreci and Tim Daniel, with art by Riley Rossmo, Colin Lorimer). In this episode, the Two Guys with PhDs are all over the place, moving from all-age comics to Bush-era politics to licensed characters to horror titles to science fiction to steampunk to Reagan's Morning in America. There's a lot packed into this show…more bang for your buck! So enjoy, won't you?
Even a blizzard can't stop us from Talking Comics! A snow storm is raging in NYC (but not in Canada!), so the Talking Comics crew split up for this week's show to work remotely. This week's podcast is a bit different and unlike regular shows, will be a video podcast of Bobby, Bob, Stephanie and Steve via Google Hangouts. Well, you can watch it as a video or choose to listen to it the good ol' fashioned podcasting way via sound. It's a bit of a shorter show due to the video part of the podcast, but we banter a bit and then get right to our Books of the Week which include: Animal Man, Imagine Agents, Disney Kingdoms: Seekers of the Weird, Alex + Ada, Rat Queens, Superior Spider-Man, World's Finest, Triple Helix, Batgirl, Fantastic Four, Gemma Bovary, Saviors, Aquaman, Scene of the Crime, The Amazing Screw-On Head And Other Curious Objects, Daredevil, Night of the Living Deadpool, Justice League, Miracleman and more.

No gracias.
