Meet out Guest Storyboard Artist Anthony Sturmas Anthony Sturmas is LA based storyboard concept artist who originally started out his career as a LA Graffiti artist in the early 80's. He was inspired to get into storytelling and comics soon after, and in the late '90s, he received a Marvel Comics Scholarship to The Kubert School, located in Dover, New Jersey. Instead of taking advantage of that scholarship, however, he chose to stay on the West Coast and began knocking on the doors of businesses in Los Angeles and painting murals throughout the city. In 2006 Anthony Sturmas began teaching a pilot program at USC. He received his BFS in Multimedia Animation from The Art Institute of Los Angeles CA, also in 2006, and won a scholarship to the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, where he was formally trained by Marc Stricland. His storyboard mentors are Bill Recinos from 'Ghostbusters' & Douglas Kirk 'DreamWorks”. He has written, produced and directed a music video as well as an animated film called “The Redstorm” by Asturmas Studios. In Los Angeles I have had the honor to work with some of best entertainment companies and film directors, such as Twitch Prime (Amazon), Nickelodeon, ATT, NBC, Sprint, Toyota, the legendary Iggy Pop (Unagi Commercial), and (POTC) Pirates of the Caribbean for Pretty Little Liars, director Steven Kiefer. Other film directors I have worked with in the past, from the movie Sharknado Anthony Ferrante for Hello Hero, The Inhabitant with director Jerren Lauder, Co-Director Ethan Manequis from the classic film “Machete”. “Z Dead End” by director Robert Restro as the senior storyboard artist starring Kane Hodder and Robert LaSardo. Finally, “ENOUGH” with director Michele LaBrrucherie. Not a dream! Not a hoax! Reilly and George are once again visited on the ol' Hypothetical Island by Mr. Anthony Marques. Most of us have one job, maybe two but Anthony is a comics artist, writer, instructor, president of the Kubert School, proprietor of Dewey's Comic City, and knows 6 ways to kill a man with his bear hands. And no, I didn't misspell 'bare'-- the dude literally has bear claws for hands. That's worth a listen, right?
We have comics royalty on the show today folks. I'm chatting with creator Emma Kubert about her new Image comics fantasy/adventure series Stoneheart. I can't quite believe the work rate with Stoneheart, Inkblot, Radiant Pink, and Frank Miller presents Pandora all going right now and still finding time to work as a teacher at the Kubert School. Whew. We chat a little bit about all those things and so much more. Stoneheart is such a great little book providing a nice, modern facelift to a classic comics genre. Make sure to call your local shop and tell them to reserve Stoneheart for you. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Letterer Clayton Cowles joins the show for a conversation about his career and approach to lettering titles like Batman, Immortal X-Men, Daredevil, and more. Cowles discusses managing his expansive workload, where his love of comics started, going to The Kubert School, working with Virtual Calligraphy, his process to starting a project, how the lettering space has evolved, for-hire versus creator-owned, where challenges lie, the impact of repeat collaborators, pushing yourself, impact projects from his career, revisiting old work, and more.
In this episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with comic creator Jade Lowder for his soon-to-be-released “It's a Horror Show: The Date,” his first book (hopefully of many) with Lesser Known Comics. Have a read at what's in store: “It's a Horror Show: The Date,” is the tale of a Werewolf Punk Rocker roaming the empty desert highways of the American southwest in a vintage hot rod searching for the next gig, mayhem and a healthy dose of carnage. But what happens when this lycanthropic motor-head encounters a group of local reprobates harassing a seemingly defenseless damsel in distress and furthermore what happens when this apparent damsel is not as she first appears and is keeping some secrets of her own? As you can see from the cover, Jade has some amazing artistic skills, and we talk about how he developed them following his classes at the Kubert School. Jade has a Kickstarter for the title which has already surpassed the goal and shares that experience. Jade and I dive into his work with Lesser Known Comics and the chance posting that led to this partnership. We look at the changing landscape of the comics industry and how he got his start, both as a creator and a fan.
At the Motor City Comic Con we spoke to legendary comic book artist Howard Chaykin, Anthony Marques (president of The Kubert School), and Roy Schwartz author of the book "Is Superman Circumcised?" We have a bit of a different episode this time. Kevin Mellon joins the show. And while he DOES have a new EP out called Songs From The Giant's Chair, there's a lot more to him than that. He is a comic book creator and a storyboard artist for Archer, Hitmonkey, & The Vampire Diaries. We start of discussing our mutual love of Failure but move into his comic and musical influences like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mark Lanegan, and Phil Collins era Genesis. Kevin explains why he decided against college to attend a place called the Kubert School, how he got into storyboarding, and exactly what a storyboard artist does. Quick, what's the most important part of a comic? Trick question, because everything is important and this wouldn't be the art form that we love if it all wasn't there. We've got Taylor Esposito here to let us in on some of that sweet sweet behind the scenes stuff that people don't always get to know about. Learn such things as: How important is hand lettering these days? What's the worst letter to write? Is it worth it to dwell on your past work when you have so much stuff ahead of you? And so much more! You can find Taylor on Twitter @TaylorEspo for personal stuff, @GhostGlyph, and for the Kubert School check out @TheKubertSchool. Or go check out Ghost Glyph Studios if you're looking to get some good lettering done for your project, and maybe some other stuff as well. In this week's episode of Off Panel, colorist Tamra Bonvillain joins the show to chat about her path to comics and the world of coloring. Bonvillain discusses her early attractions to the comics world, when art entered the picture, the Kubert School, flatting's position in the coloring world, her process, finding artists you mesh with, how those partnerships come together, what capacity looks like, how the job shifts artist to artist, layers, for hire vs. creator-owned, dream collaborators, supporting your role in comics, and more.
Listener discretion advised. This episode involves talks of child pornography. We are finally back to talk about the indie comic Anne Bonnie and the very problematic creator Tim Yates. I, unfortunately, knew Time Yates before his arrest and learned a great deal about who he is and why this comic nearly disappeared overnight. We try to keep the conversation from getting to heavy, but it is unfortunately hard to do with the given subject. Along the way we discuss the failings of creators like Dan Harmon (creator of Rick and Morty and Community) and Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy, Firefly, and director of The Avengers) as well as the ways an apology can work. I'm joined by Kay Despina to talk about these issues so please check out her site Acceptance Revolution for stories on acceptance of sexual orientation, gender identity, and mental illness. This week Amy and Mike continue their discussion with Sergio Cariello, illustrator of The Action Bible and Michelle Baird from Cook Publishing. Arriving this September, and updated version of The Action Bible will feature 25 new Bible stories and 23 expanded stories – all illustrated by Marvel and DC Comics artist Sergio Cariello. The Action Bible family of products has more than 85 million units in print worldwide since it launched in 2010. The original The Action Bible has sold more than 2.3 million copies and has spent more than 515 weeks on the ECPA Top 50 bestseller list. It is available in 27 languages globally, with 10-15 additional language translations to be completed in 2020. Sergio Cariello studied at the Word of Life Bible Institute (in Brazil and New York) as well as the Joe Kubert School of Cartooning (New York). He drew superheroes for Marvel and DC Comics and served as an instructor at the Kubert School. Sergio has spent more than a decade bringing the Bible to life for children and adults around the world. “It’s been the privilege of my life to combine my faith and art in The Action Bible. I loved to study the Bible before I began drawing The Action Bible, so these illustrations are the result of a continuous walk with Christ,” explains Sergio Cariello. “Drawing Captain America or Batman is fantastic, but drawing Jesus is different because I know the Holy Spirit is touching readers’ hearts through my drawings.” See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

I've been running these mastermind groups for over a year now, and I've seen how powerful they can be for the right creators. Everybody has blindspots. We ALL have things in our creative lives we can’t see from the inside. We all struggle with self doubt and paralysis, and we are all prone to getting stuck. Albert Einstein said "we can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." If you're ready to get new perspectives and solutions on your challenges from creators who have overcome them, a mastermind can provide that. The right mastermind will support you, not let you fail, and push you to new heights. Now, I realize many of you have gotten to this point largely on your own and may even be proud of that. (And you should be!) But at a certain point, what got you here, won't get you there. Your network may be your single greatest asset, and being a part of a dedicated mastermind group will quickly become the most invaluable part of your network. Joining a MasterMInd may be just what you're looking for IF…

I wanted to prove all those people wrong.” “You can do a lot of different things, but you really need to focus in on one or two things at a time and then finish them.” “I think it’s all about realizing when you have to swallow the hard pill and when you have to cough it back up.” “Find the thing that makes you happy and then do that thing until it doesn’t make you happy anymore.” “Don’t feel like you’re ever stuck doing something. Because you’re not. You’re never stuck. You can find a way out. You can find a way to break free from the things you’re stuck in.” “Life changes so fast. This week's episode was recorded on location at East Side Mags in Montclair, NJ. Today's guest is Joe Caramagna, an Eisener and Harvey award nominated letterer who's worked on Marvel titles such as Daredevil, Captain America and New Avengers as well as serving as the writer of two creator-owned titles: The Further Travels of Wyatt Earp and Model Operandi. Fellow Jersey-based writer/artist Stephen Coughlin also steps in for a few quick comments in between drawing sketches for kids. Stephen is the creator of the title Sanctuary for Slave Labor Graphics. My conversation with Joe is as random as it is hilarious. We talk about his background in comics as a graduate of the Kubert School and starting out as an intern with Marvel Comics. This is Adrian Has Issues, so you know I gotta get some hockey-related banter in and we riff on the Minnesota Wild logo, defunct teams and how Joe's comic book career mirrors that of legendary goalie Martin Brodeur. Also in this episode: Facebook v Twitter: Dawn of Social Networking! Lethal Weapon Impersonations! Superhero Presidential Candidates! The Secret Origins of Stephen Coughlin Adrian King: The Geek Chris Matthews! And more!
